But, the food is amazing and completely authentic so I know if I were to live in Amsterdam, I'd definitely be coming back to this place. I came in around 7pm on a Saturday and they were PACKED. There's one main entrance but there're three different levels to the restaurant and it was insane how filled they were. It seems like it might be a good idea to make a reservation here, though most people were able to get in even without one. My negative experience was that the waiter just kept blowing me off for other 2-people parties which was really annoying, but whatever. Food here is great and really cheap. I got a bowl of noodles for 6.50 and oh my goodness it was delicious--just like how my parents make it back at home. I had rice noodles with cha siu in the small bowl and was super full when I finished it. I also ordered a side of siu mai to satisfy my dim sum cravings and wasn't disappointed by that either. The menu is really extensive and honestly every dish looks promising and legit--none of that Chinese food cooked to European tastes crap, but real, authentic delicious Chinese food. Despite how filled the restaurant was, they're ridiculously efficient--it probably took more time for me to get the waiter's attention (~15 min...) then to wait for my food (10 min). I was in and out in under an hour with a very happy stomach. tldr; delicious authentic Chinese food right in the heart of China Town -- be wary of crowds though, so either make a reservation/come at an off hour, or just wait it out because it's definitely worth it read more

We came here on a Friday night while visiting with friends in Amsterdam. One of them was a local and said this was his favorite restaurant in the city. We had to wait but only for 10 minutes or so and it was PACKED on all three floors. There were 4 of us and I let him order his favorite dishes. He ordered 2 large dumpling soups which had both shrimp and meat dumplings as well as ramen noodles. This was AWESOME, we really enjoyed the soup and it had great flavor. The noodles had a wonderful consistency that was perfect. We had a large order of the sweet and sour prawns as well as the plate of mixed barbecued meats. I really liked both these dishes too and the prawns were a good size. Clearly this place gets a lot of local traffic because it was slammed with people and the food came out tremendously quickly. I would recommend New King if you're in the mood for some good Chinese while visiting Amsterdam! read more

A beautiful day with a beautiful bowl of Sui Kau noodle soup. What could I say more? An indeed brilliant choice. The Sui Kau is a flavor bomb. When I bit one these Sui Kau, the sweetness of the soup and the shrimps overflowed in my mouth. It was tender yet chewy as a same time. Moreover, the clear, gentle looking soup yet it has a strong impact of flavor. Gosh!!Best sui kau noodle in downtown I guess. The place has authentic Chinese feelings, however the minus part is it a bit cramp. But well it's really a pure Chinese restaurant. The food arrived quickly and the size of the wontons and "sui kau" dumplings were so much bigger than we expected! The wontons were large, chock full of plump shrimp, and tasty! The skin of the wonton was thin too and the soup base was good. The "sui kau" dumplings were so meaty and chunky that it almost tasted like eating a sui mai dim sum in a wrapped wonton. It was extra filling because of that. I did like the wontons more though because of the fresh shrimp. read more

This is probably my favorite mandarin/Chinese restaurant in and around Amsterdam. I have been here many times and it's never a disappointing experience! The area is really fun to walk around and full of lil asian places to eat. We ordered a wonton soup and a shrimpdumpling soup combinated with siu mai and fried wontons. ( we like to share ) A light after-gym meal was what we needed and we were VERY satisfied! As happy as two lil girls with a new Barbie doll. So concluding: YAY for New King. The fried pork belly in the noodle soup was soup tasty but the actual broth wasn't too flavorful and just salty! The fried shrimp were some of the best I ever had!! Fantastic "real" Mandarine (Chinese) restaurant in Amsterdams chinatown. They recently rebuild the place and now not only the food is good, but it even looks good. Some tips: The oysters... they are steamed and come with a very nice sauce. Have the sui kau soup (soup with shrimp dumplings) with flat noodles... MJAM! The lamb is amazing, filled eggplant is very nice, the chicken dishes are good (chicken malaka), and try the Chinese broccoli (with lots of garlic) for a very healty meal! Authentic Chinese food ! Limited choices for Veg food .. but mix dim sum's were good !

This is one of my favorite go-to spots for noodles, and their star dish: the "sui kai noodle soup". "sui kai" is shrimp wonton that is packed full of shrimp. Usually these are quite small with other fillers, but this was all shrimp. Come here for the cheap and filing food! Food: 5/5 Must haves - sui kai noodle soup, duck pancakes You have a choice of 3 different types of noodles, all 3 are delicious so it is a matter of preference. Make sure to get sui kai with your noodles, you can also top it with anything else; I personally am very fond of roast duck. Any of the other meats are tasty as well. The large is very filling so it is great for lunch / dinner. Service: 3/5 The service here is very similar to a standard Asian noodle bar: fast and no-nonsense. Tap water is not served here (and it is clearly stated as well!) and service is abrupt and rushed. It is a great place to eat, but not to socialize. This is because it is very popular and there are always tons of people waiting. NOT the place for long Dutch dinners. Atmosphere: 3/5 No-nonsense, get in and get out. Before my visit I was unaware of the Chinese presence in Amsterdam. Amsterdam's Chinatown is located on one small street, adjacent to the Red Light District. Some of my co-workers recommended one of this place, "Yeah, the restaurant with the ducks hanging in the window is REALLY good." Being originally from the Bay Area, with a large Asian population, I wanted to see how this restaurant would stack up. I am SO glad that I took my co-worker up on this recommendation. Fried Shrimp Dumpling Soup (5.50 Euro), Crunchy Fried Duck Rolls(5 Euro), Sweet&Sour Chicken(around 13 Euro)--this food was delicious and was just what I was looking for. The dumpling soup was warm and tastey, the duck was delicious and fatty, and the Sweet&Sour Chicken reminded me of a fancier version of Panda Express from the states. Overall, this is a great restaurant to visit if you are in the mood for Chinese. They have whole selections of food based on meat type--chicken, beef, seafood...there really is a large selection. Also, I remember a wine list at the end if you want to class it up. Not much in the way of dessert =/ One of my few complaints is that I came in alone and they very noticeably made it uncomfortable that I was by myself. Also, you must walk up a flight of stairs in order to enter the restaurant. People in wheel chairs beware! being from the west coast and having spent time in china, and loving authentic chinese food, i try to eat chinese food as often as possible, as many places as possible. This spot is in amsterdam's china town, which is a pretty long street of shops and eateries. the place came highly recommended by two locals. the food is not great, probably worse than typical americanized chinese food: the meats are low quality. pork stuffed buns, pork shu mai, pork dumplings all grissly with a lot of fat. too pink to feel great about eating it. the chicken satay, chicken dumplings are dark meat, grissly, fatty. the fried items are very greasy. the shrimp items--shimp shu mai, shimp dumpling, shrimp toast, have that weird 'fake shrimp' taste, as if they augment the flavor with a flavor enhancer. the chinese roasted duck, which are hanging in the window and which they serve in a variety of ways (in buns and dumplings and pancakes, on its own over rice or noodles) is dry, tough, and greasy. duck is by far my favorite item, so this was a sad disappointment. there are lovely bowls of soup that other diners had, they looked very nice, and the place was packed with locals: but blergh. not sure amsterdam knows what good chinese food tastes like. read more

Although the stairs are steep and narrow, making your way up them to enjoy the food here, is worth the adventure! I have been here a couple of times. Although it is usually crowded, the wait does not seem to be too long. And if you need a quick bite to tide you over, there is a takeaway right across the street... The dumplings are terrific (as you may have seen from other reviews), but, really, everything I have eaten here has been terrific! The staff can be a bit distracted when it is busy, but that is understandable and a bit a patience may be necessary. Came here on the recommendation of a friend. The girl at reception was nice but then as soon as I sat down service was terrible. Waitress seemed to have no time to talk about the menu and when I ordered my dish forgot to bring me the extra sauce I ordered. Food was overpriced and the three meat plate (which is nearly 10€ more expensive than my favourite place in the UK) was not good: meat was tough and dry and the Peking duck was not flavourful. I was super excited to try this place for dinner, and when I did, the food was good, but the overall experience was just weird. For some reason when we went, they demanded cash only (you can see it on their receipts), but they have a card charger. Oh, and another tacky thing is that while we were paying, they kept telling us "tips weren't included" (AND it says it on the receipt too). So, let me start by saying that I love this place. The food is greasy but i loved it! We had the steamed and fried shrimp dumping - i personally don't like fried dumplings so cant comment on those but the steamed ones were good with thin cover and lovely meat inside. We also had chicken satay which was very regular - nothing to rave or complain about. Finally, we had the peking roasted duck and i loved it!! I ate here two consecutive days Aug 4, and 5, 2016. I was traveling alone, and could only order one thing. My little hotel room did not have a fridge. I ordered stuffed eggplant one day and lamb chops in a clay pot another day. I saw the roast duck on every table, but I had no one to share with. Both were delicious, and a lot of food, I would order again. But the price is also on the high side. I was staying in a Chinese-owned hotel. When I asked what was their opinion about New King restaurant, they said "Oh, they serve white people's Chinese food" or some wording to suggest that the REAL Chinese did not eat there. Indeed most of the people eating there were white people, and in USA, the sign of a truly authentic REAL Chinese restaurant would be no white people eating there, only Asian faces. In Amsterdam Chinatown, there is a restaurant that has on it's window sign "Where the Chinese eat", but that is not New King Mandarin. I had someone take my picture of me, standing below those words, below the sign. I asked waitress where are the Chinese diners. She said there ARE Chinese, look downstairs (restaurant is on at least 3 levels). I looked downstairs, not that many Chinese, maybe 20% if even that. I sat next to a Dutch couple who were locals and said they ate there at least once a month and it was their favorite restaurant. They had duck on their table. They sure looked like they KNEW what to order. But the food was good! Service, so-so, they were rushed and harried and acted so, but they were not rude. I look at pictures of the duck and I sure wish I could go back here and eat the duck with "someone", but here I am back in Arizona USA (cowboy country, what do they know about REAL Chinese food and duck)?. read more

Though there were mostly churns people eating here I don't think it was good for roasted meats. I got a few to try for take out, which should have been fast since it's already made. I always love to try Chinese food when traveling. My wife and I shared the three mix BBQ (roast duck, roast pork and cha siew), small "sui jiao" soup and white rice. It taste great and the price was very reasonable - it only cost us about 20 euro. The chili they provide on the table is spicy but it gives the meats more flavors. When we were there at about 2pm, the place was still very crowded. The restaurant is a little small but that is expected in that area.
