The business owner, Afshi, is very knowledgeable of best practice in exercise and movement. She guided me through several gentle, yet impactful stretches after I strained my back. When I approached the store front, I could see that class is literally right there (no lobby area) so I didn't want to disturb class and I walked away and waited in my car (it was 35 degrees out) At 11am, I went back and students were in pigeon. "Ok maybe it's winding down, I'll come back in a couple minutes." I waited outside until 11:20am and previous class was STILL in session!!!! Ironically, the class is titled "authentic Indian yoga" so makes me wonder if they are aware of Asteya---because by running late they sure stole MY time.

First and most important, you are being taught by a real yogi from India. You get lots of personal attention and the teacher customizes the practice for each of his students. It's great! And you can tell that by the number of people that come to the studio. Sometimes it gets crowded (especially on Saturday mornings), but the studio is open 7 days a week, so everyone can be accommodated.

There are lots of men that come here so if you are next to one, prepare to get his sweat on you. It's a decent place but most of the instructors play the most God awful music. I attend their power yoga classes and instead of upbeat music (POWER) I hear country music and folky type music. It's way too mellow (and downright annoying) to match the amount of exertion needed to complete the class. I'll keep going here though because there are no other true hot yoga studios for miles.

However, Akasha is the best. The classes are a great stress relief and awesome exercise. The instructors are all very willing to help people new to Yoga, like myself. If this is the last Yoga place that I attend, I will be happy. Aside from relocating, I see no need to go anywhere else. My only complaint is that the store next door (Reclaimed...a artsy used furniture store) blasts their music and hammers on things, so it is difficult to totally relax during meditation when the furniture store is open (fortunately only) on weekends. Akasha also does other fun events to raise money for community projects and causes... drum circles, movie nights, Zumba and Tai Chi. It is a righteous place.

But a friend of mine who belongs to Akasha bugged me to give it a try and offered to take me and my partner as guests on her membership. After the first class, we were hooked. My partner and I went back the very next day and signed up for monthly memberships and began going to classes several times a week. That was last Fall. There are several reasons I love Akasha Yoga. Aside from the warm and peaceful atmosphere, the instructors are all wonderful. Jennifer (the owner) is a fantastic instructor, has great energy, and a great sense of humor. In the months I was a member, I had the opportunity to take classes with all of the instructors at some point, and they are all fantastic in different ways, but they all strive to make everyone feel comfortable and welcome whether you are a complete beginner (like I was) or an experienced yogi. Akasha does a community class once a month on Saturdays that is free to all. Additionally, they raise money for various community causes each month and have different events and special classes planned throughout each month that add to the sense of community at Akasha. My partner and I recently had to move out of the area, and while Crystal Lake is a great suburb that we will miss, what makes us most sad about the move is that we can no longer take classes at Akasha. I would highly recommend this place for anyone interested in giving yoga a try, or for any yoga pros looking for a great place to practice.

In October I enrolled in the Yoga Teacher Training program which was sponsored by TBY Yoga and The Yoga Effect. Julia Jonson, Andrew Gurvey, Sally Gill and Anna Ottolino are authentic and have a deep understanding of this ancient practice. I am grateful for the knowledge that I have gained from Julia and Sally's teaching. Their techniques capture the yoga philosophy and presence of movement that calms my mind and I appreciate the positive atmosphere they create. I know as I continue on this path my yoga teaching will keep strengthening my mind, body and self awareness. Having practiced in both studios, I can say with confidence that they each have a welcoming and supportive atmosphere that is adaptable to all levels. The instructors are excellent and they make you feel like you are the most important student in class. Their clients' wellbeing is at the center of everything they do. After completion of the program, I feel fully prepared to teach effective and meaningful yoga classes.
