I needed a fanny pack zipper fixed. One of the two zippers of my Cotopaxi fanny pack got caught on the ribbon of the key loop that is part of the bag. I tried to fix it myself but it was lodged in there and messed up the zipper. The company offers free repairs, but I missed the window to drop it off at fedex. Bringing it to New Pauls was so easy. The man at the front was very friendly (and quirky, and joked around with me and my kid). For a reasonable price, it was fixed by the next day and looked brand new. No complaints. I brought two pairs of men's dress shoes here to be reheeled, resoled, and cleaned up a bit. I was charged about $45 per pair, which I thought was a bit high but seems comparable to other shoe repair shops in the area. After seeing so many good reviews here, I'm a bit shocked by both the shoddy repair job I received and the rudeness of the owner. After about a week I noticed that the new sole was splitting from one pair of shoes, so I brought them back into the shop to have them fixed. I figured it would be something simple - the glue didn't bond properly or something like that - and that the repair guy would fix it and I would be on my way. However, the guy accused ME of not walking properly in my shoes and that it was not his fault the sole was coming off. Excuse me!?! I've never had this problem with any pair of shoes before, but I guess it's how I walk in them...sure. He then offered to fix the shoes for another $25, and I thanked him, declined, and got the hell out of there. I brought them to another shoe repair down the street, that ended up doing an equally sloppy job, but at least the sole is still on the shoe. Cut to months later, and the other pair that seemed fine now look like crap. I'm not sure what he used on the leather, but it's become really worn looking. I take alright care of my shoes, condition and polish them somewhat regularly, but I have no idea what happened here. So in short, I'm never coming here again and you should not either, especially if you're hoping to fix up a more expensive/luxury pair of shoes. read more

This place has my business for life. Last year, I took a pair of boots to them that were a bit scuffed up, and they fixed them right up. They pointed out that the sole was coming off a bit, but not too terribly yet, and I opted to just have them clean and polish the shoe. Wore those boots multiple times a week in rain and snow and slush for some months, and then took them out again this fall and wore them again most days for two months. At this point, I'd managed to scuff them up again, plus now the stitches were really coming apart from the sole and I couldn't wear them in the rain anymore. I really wore those things into the ground. Brought them back to New Paul's this week, just hoping there was something they could do. They examined them very carefully and explained all the procedures they were going to do (cleaning, polishing, reattaching the sole, waterproofing). They showed me the cost of each of those things, and then named a combined price that was way lower than I expected. I picked them up today and they look beautiful! They were carefully pointing out each thing that had been done, but even without any expertise I could see that the stitching and sole and polish were like new. My shoes are shiny and pretty and look better than the day I bought them (maybe because they weren't originally meant to be waterproof and now they've been coated in something for that). This shop is amazing!! Very high quality work. I brought in a pair of ugg leather riding boots, several years old, very beaten up, color fading and the soles busted. I'd abused those boots and trudged them through rain, slush, and snow; water had gotten in and done damage. They evaluated the boots and gave me a price of $90 to redo the soles on both, shine and polish, as well as waterproof the shoes. I picked up the boots a week later, and the work was great! Looked like new. They encouraged me to try the boots on to make sure it felt good, which I did. I wore the boots for about 2 weeks when I noticed the new soles were starting to peel off. I took the boots back and they repaired the soles for free (plus gave them another polish and shine)! I really love that they take their business seriously and the integrity of their service. I truly appreciate their honesty... they do not try to oversell things or services. They're fast, their prices are anywhere between fair and low (depending on the work), and above all, they're communicative. When he thinks of a better way to repair my seriously broken shoes, he calls me and lets me know what he wants to do if it changes the charge. I LOVE THIS PLACE. Seriously. I've made the mistake of taking shoes elsewhere and everyone else has basically covered up problems instead of fixing them. Paul's completely rebuilds heels etc. so you don't have to go get everything reheeled again in six months. He's done two pairs of boots for me, including some ancient Donald Pliners that should really be dead by now but look brand new because Paul is a genius. He also reheeled various other shoes and fixed a Gucci bag that several other repair guys said they wouldn't touch. Just let Paul do whatever he wants. He'll walk you through what he's going to do, which takes quite a while because he loves his work and talking about the process. Seriously, he is trustworthy and will not let you down. Tell him to do what he thinks is best. What a mensch. Really. He has integrity. He should probably run for mayor but he loves fixing shoes so he never will. Paul's prices are fair and he will cut you a deal if you're having several things done or if you're a regular customer. You can also get a better deal if you pay cash. You pay when you pick up, which I like because I'm so happy with the results that whatever the amount is seems like nothing for the perfect job Paul has done. I decided to take my shoes to New Pauls after I found it on Yelp. I needed my tall, leather Steve Madden boots resoled for the season. The shoes were quite worn down, so I knew I was in for a full replacement. (Sometimes they can just redo the tip and the heel, which costs half as much. But my boots were past that point.) The repair was 50 bucks, they were done on time and worked out well. The Korean guy was very nice about fixing up my shoes, though I believe it's the guy behind the counter who's the actual cobbler. There's also a shoe place literally across the street, which seems to be a fine store as well, I've not been there. I don't know a ton about resoling (sp?) shoes, but I'm happy with my boots and that they're going to do so well for another season. read more

Compared to prices in the area, they are priced well (I've paid less outside of NYC, but who hasn't). They did a perfect job resoling/heeling two pairs of my wife's shoes. $50 a pair. I am a huge fan of this place. I've brought two pairs of shoes here - one to replace the sole (which was about $20 I think?) and one to replace a broken zipper on a pair of boots (which was $17). He didn't have the exact same zipper style, so we fished through his bag of zipper clips and found one that was pretty similar in color, just a bit smaller. No worries, as I don't think people are making sure my zippers match perfectly. But good enough for me! Boots came back safe and sound (and functional!) Super affordable and fast. They did a great job replacing my heels and cleaning my oxfords, loafers, and boots. Definitely added some life to my nicer shoes. I ripped open my coveted leather bag on a door handle last summer and they sewed it up nice and neat for a good price. My mother visited a few weeks ago and asked me if I knew of an awesome shoe repair place I could recommend. She had tried several shoe repair shops in her hometown, but they were unable to fulfil her request. She had a pair of Steve Madden high heels that were not fitting her snug enough, so she wanted a leather strap placed on them for a better fit. After reading a handful of glowing reviews, I knew that Paul's would be the perfect place. My Mom and I visited Paul's on a Wednesday afternoon. He was so friendly and gave us exemplary customer service. He was very attentive and made sure he understood exactly what my mother wanted. He walked us through his process. He told us that the shoes would be ready by Friday afternoon. My mother stressed to him that she needed the shoes by Friday, because she lived out of town, and would be headed back home. He assured her the work would be done. True to his word, Paul was finished with the work in time. He fit my mother for the straps in order for the fit to be just right. She tested them out in the store, and was extremely pleased. We told Paul how happy we were with his work. I told him that I would write a great review. I also shared with him that I had found his shop via Yelp and the good reviews he had received. He was shocked. He told me he had never been on Yelp, and has never read any reviews. It felt great to be the one to tell him about all of his happy customers. Living in the Big Apple sure does take a toll on your shoes. Put a Ukrainian cobbler with a Korean businessman and you get Paul's Shoe Repair. I left my beloved Barney's New York flats there and within 3 days, they changed the tips, heels and added rubber. I'm pretty satisfied with the results as my flats were in deplorable condition before. However, I knocked two stars off since they promised it would be ready in 2 days, not 3. They didn't seem particularly contrite, but they were pretty nice on my second trip there when I plunked down the $36 and picked up my shoes. read more

Would give them a 5 if they were more willing to take card---if you give them a credit card, the Russian cobbler man firmly says, "cash is better" or "cash is best." One of my favorite To Do's during my four years in the neighborhood was visiting Paul's. They do AMAZING work and are honest men. Prices are market rate, both for New York and other cities I've had shoes worked on. More importantly, they'll be straight with you about what the shoe needs and doesn't need. I've probably had six nice leather shoes soled (and resoled and re-resoled) here. The work they do is really excellent: I've gotten years out of shoes that I would have had to toss otherwise. I've had them do rubber gum soles, leather, and rubber soles and all have been top notch. The one time that it wasn't, they happily fixed the issue when I brought it in. With new soles from Paul's, your shoes look better than they did when you bought them! And they're sturdy for the New York pavement. They can also do some creative non-shoe work when you ask. I had them fix the leather part of a woven belt I love and it still is working great three years later. The guy who does the shoes chuckled and asked "why not buy a new belt?" but he was glad to do it. Also had them reattach the straps for my leather shoulder bag when those came undone. They used rivets and small pieces of leather to put the strap on better than it ever originally was. Finally, I've had them replace my watch battery a few times and they do that well. Hardest lesson I learned with Paul's was to trust their judgement. Come in with an idea of what you want done, but also fully explain the issue and ask what they think is best. I can't imagine how they could be better. They've repaired all my good shoes, perfectly. Also do a good job on Men's shoes. They searched their entire inventory of repaired shoes once when I told them that I was sure that they had them - but when I looked again, they were in my closet at home, perfectly repaired and shined. I called to apologize for the trouble I had put them through, and Paul said, "We are service people, we have to be quiet". They KNEW they didn't have the shoes, but they searched just to keep me happy. They do a wonderful job of repairing shoes. Moved near the area and needed my three black boots resoled and polished. The Russian cobbler, Roman did a great job! Not only do I get to practice my Russian, but I got great service. The three boots were done in a week and cost me $60 total. Bear in mind though that two of the boots were entirely run down. He def had to do some magic to make them look brand new. The zipper on my knee-high boot broke on my way to a business meeting (of course) and I found myself flapping along, open-booted, on the UWS in search of a quick repair. I checked Yelp for good places within a few blocks and found New Pauls. The 5-star reviews weren't wrong! The guy who helped me told me he wouldn't need to replace the zipper (which was a wildly expensive "fix" another repair place suggested when the same thing happened to a different pair of boots), and had my zipper fixed and my shoes polished within 15-20 minutes. He didn't completely fix it b/c that required a lot more work than I wanted to be done on my boots, he fixed the immediate issue.
