PLEASE READ Some of the staff were absolutely flummoxed with my presence in their store. I might return just to improve their cardiac output again. Other than that I will never go back there. Following me around the store? For what? To put their macro-aggression on full display to the other customers so that they feel safe in my presence. Apparently this is a pattern and I thought it was just me but I see other 2 star reviews describing the same treatment from years gone by. Are you kidding me Berkeley? It's just friggin' fabric. What am I going to do? Put a whole bolt in my pocket? You all are being too much with your silliness. Especially when "quilting" has a deep history in the cultures of customers that you are disrespecting with this behavior. Get a history book before you decide that you need to follow me around your store. Please realize that some of us are quite aware of your message when we're the only shoppers being asked, "May I help you?" It's not original, people. Do you think I'm incapable of looking at fabric? If your establishment is that exclusive, make it by appointment only. And don't start with the "Some of my friends are... (fill in the race or culture). This isn't a "MAGA" thing. Staff kindness is hit and miss. Today I got the wind knocked out of my sails for quilting because of the service and a previous odd experience I had here that made me feel they didnt want me there, so I won't be going back. Last time I was here I happily spent over $200 and had plans on spending around $140 a piece for two basting projects I needed help with. I was going to sign up for the intro to quilting class ($120) and the intermediate class ($100 plus) right after. Plus purchasing fabric for the back of my quilt . This planned spending would total have been around $550 not including the $200 I already spent. The money will go elsewhere now. This morning I found out a relative had a medical emergency and between trying to find flights out of state and work, I canceled the rest of my day to try to find peace. I planned on heading over to New Pieces to drown my emotions in fabric earlier but calls and trying to navigate child care so I could l fly out got in the way. I called 20 mins before closing to ask about their basting prices and to check their hours because i wanted to get a background for a quilt top I was completing. The woman who answered the phone said she didn't know basting prices and I told her I was about 15 mins away and asked if I it was too close to closing and wanted to know if I could come in or if it would be best to come another day. She said since I was close she'd be ok with staying open a little later and she'd have the basting quote ready for me when I arrived. I booked it over there and arrived to her on the phone. I laid out my quilt and looked around for background fabric while she was talking. She was on the phone a little over 5 mins before she closed the office door and I heard her say " There's a woman here I graciously told I'd stay a few minutes late for but she's taking much longer than I expected." I was surprised to hear her say she was waiting on me because she was on the phone and it felt really bad to be blamed like that. When she came out. I told her I didn't mean to take her time and I was going to leave. I asked about the basting prices and she said she didnt know and i should come back later that week. She realized I heard her and said I could stay but I didn't feel comfortable staying at that point and didn't want to shop there any longer. This was the second incident there that made me feel bad/uncomfortable. I was there last week working in their classroom working on a project and I ran into the intro to quilting instructor. I had called to see if I could get in her last class but missed the first session and she gave me dates for Oct and Jan. I told her I was looking forward to taking her January class and she turned to the other woman in the room and said "speaking of January class. We usually do your intermediate class right after mine and there's going to be a gap if I do my January class so what do you think about doing your class in January?" Then they proceeded to talk about scheduling and she made plans to cancel the class right there on the spot. She never said anything to me after I told her I was excited about the class, not even "oh I'm going to have to cancel it" she just canceled it like I wasn't there at all. I don't know if this is because I'm Black. I don't know if it's cause I'm a millennial. I dont know if its because I'm new to quilting. I don't know if they just have certain people they want to work with. Some people here are very nice and helpful. Some are mean and unwelcoming. I'll just get my fabric else where and find someone to baste my quilts from yelp because you never know what you're going to get when you come to New Pieces. 2 stars instead of 1 star for the fabric selection and the kind staff members they do have. read more

Kathy and Marlene were so wonderful to work with. My daughter and I came in with a giant (92" x 100") onesie quilt that we made together that we needed to choose binding, backing, batting, and thread for. It was a wonderful experience for both my daughter and me. They were so fabulous with my 7 year old! We can't wait to see the finished quilt. Solidly half the time I go in one woman in particular is rude and exasperated. Yesterday I was looking around, happy to do so, but looking for a particular fabric. This woman asked if I needed help and I explained kinda what I was looking for. I didn't have much to go on. She seemed so annoyed that I didn't have more information for her even though I never asked her for help to begin with. She actually scoffed at me. I think she realized she was being unkind and then was sweet as pie and wanted to help. By that point I was done with her and made it clear I wanted her to get lost. Reverse-image searched the fabric and found it at a different store. Three stars bc I love the selection and the location is super convenient for me. read more

In the old reality, New Pieces had always been my go-to for lush and joyful printed cotton fabrics for tops for my extended family. In this new reality of face masks and SIP, the New Pieces online store has been a gold mine of quilting cotton and batiks sold in half-yards, with choice of store pick-up or shipped, and cordial assistance available by email or phone. New Pieces has recently opened their store with the usual precautions of limits on number of customer admitted or by appointment. Shopping online has been delightful, but can't beat in-store with IRL natural lighting! read more

I used to wander by and sometimes into New Pieces when it was on Solano but until Marlene reviewed it in September I was unaware that they had moved down to 4th and Gilman, right beside the Gilman Grill. Wednesday was Nina's birthday. When we were at the ACCI Gallery a couple of weeks ago we saw a stunning quilt in their special show which closed last week. She's been looking for something to put on the wall over her bed. I told her if she wanted it I would split the cost as a birthday/Chanukah gift. That's the sort of thing we've done for each other over our 40 years of friendship. She took a photo of it to see how the colors and design would go w/ her bedroom decor but decided it wouldn't work. Today we were celebrating her birthday w/ lunch out and shopping at New Pieces to see what their quilts looked like. We parked in their lot and walked in to their bright, shiny store full of fabrics. Display quilts were hanging on the walls and other vertical surfaces, examples of what could be made in their classes, I think. The quilts for sale were folded in a display case at the front of the store. They had a book of photographs of them which was moderately helpful because the colors of the photos weren't at all true. We looked at a couple of quilts and one seemed quite possible. We asked about taking it home to check it out but were told that was against store policy because the quilts were on consignment. Nina took a photo of the quilt she liked best and we went back to her house to see what we thought. What we thought was that the photo was inadequate to judge. We drove back and asked either whether we could ask the person who made that policy to make an exception or if they could call the artist and ask her permission. They explained that the store owner was in a lengthy meeting but they greeted the idea of calling the artist w/ enthusiasm and did so, securing her permission. We explained that we were going to lunch and then would return to Nina's to check out the quilt. Nina left her credit card and we had lunch, then drove back to her house, where I held the quilt against the wall over the bed while she studied it. She felt the quilt, while exquisite, was incompatible w/ the pattern of the Persian rug she has on the floor. We decided to stop by Emmet Eiland's Rugs after returning the quilt to see what was there. We went back to New Pieces, where we returned the quilt. While there it occurred to me that I could engage them to put together the baby quilt for my brother's new granddaughter, who will be graduating high school by the time I put it together if I continue as I have been. I have the fabric, which I bought in Ashland, but haven't cut it up or even conceptualized exactly how to put it together. So tomorrow or the next day I'm going to drive down there w/ the fabric and talk to them about it. read more

I love quilting ladies! They're so funny and passionate about fabric! Who'd of thought I could get so much pleasure from cutting up pieces of fabric and sewing them back together to make designs and cozy blankets. I used to work at a quilt store many moons ago, and have always had seamstresses in the family- but up until recently making a quilt was just a daydream. Not that I crank them out now, but I've pieced (that means made each block that will eventually be sewn together and bound with backing) my first quilt top, and I'm so into it! I had some fabric stashed away from my old job at the quilt shop, and had bought fabric I liked here and there, so I went to New Pieces one day, determined to check out their new location (it's quite large!) and make a quilt with the fabric I had. No luck- I had no pattern, I had small cuts of fabric, and I had no idea what I was doing. It's hard for me to learn this sort of thing from a book, and I'm too anal to start this sort of thing without a clear plan. A very directive and helpful employee chatted me up and I decided to take a class for beginners. She helped my choose some additional materials I would need for the class, and I was on my way. The best part was when she used the word 'sucky' to describe a fabric. It really cracked me up to hear a 65+ year old woman use that word. Anyway, Cindi was my teacher for 3 beginner classes. She's great. There were only 2 other ladies in the class. They were totally sweet and supportive, as I was the true 'beginner' in this class. There was lots of one-on-one time and help with fabric choices, if you haven't done so already. You have to bring your own machine and materials, like cutting mat and notions, which is kind of a pain, but as the class progressed we didn't need our machines. You can probably work something out with the instructor before hand if you just can't bring your own stuff. And of course you're in a quilt shop so you can buy stuff you don't have. (! expensive hobby!) Their new location isn't close to pubic transport, but is close to the freeway for easy access in a car. I would encourage the owner of the Tannery complex to install some sensor lights outside. It gets really dark around there at night once classes are over and you're fumbling with all your stuff and car keys! Overall I'm thrilled with this resource. Besides the classes they stock lots of books and magazines, patterns, cool contemporary fabrics, and lots of advice! I never found them anything but helpful and instructive. read more

My mom really enjoys quilting, so during her recent visit, a mutual friend who's also a quilter took us here. As the non-quilter in our party, I was happy to see that while they had a large selection, it wasn't overhwelming and the two of them were able to peruse it all well before I lost my mind. The staff were all very friendly and gave New Pieces a very communal, comfortable feel. The class occurring in the back sounded both fun and supportive for novices and journeymen alike, and I was amused to see they'd posted newspaper comic strips poking fun at fabric and quilt shops. And really, while I didn't find a to-die-for fabric for my forthcoming quilt (thank you, Mom!), I did find a fabric print that was large and beautiful enough that I bought about a yard to make into a wall hanging. TRIVIA: Quilting originated in Asia (probably Siberia) prior to the 1st century, and did not appear in Europe until 12th century Crusaders brought it back from the Middle East as insulation under heavy metal armors. read more

I had a horrible experience at Stonemountain and Daughter so I decided to take a little trip over here with my cousin. We were literally in and out in 15 minutes. I was working on a Tokidoki themed quilt as a gift to my boyfriend. Right when we walked in we found what we were looking for. We found really cute Tokidoki themed fabric. There's a wide selection of fabric and metrials. There are beautiful quilts hung on the walls for decoration. The quilting ladies are so friendly. Normally when I go to Fabric stores like JoAnn's, no one really acknowledges me. At Stonemountain and Daughters, I couldn't even find an associate to help me. But at New Pieces the ladies were so helpful and friendly. They have great customer service and they treat everyone with respect and kindness. It is a little pricey, some materials you can find at lower prices in other stores. I had a enjoyable experience and I highly recommend this place for your quilting needs. I will be returning back to this store for my future quilting necessities. read more

I had a disappointing experience here today, and was just going to write it off until I saw similar feedback from other disappointed could-have-been customers. Visited on the Quilters Quest, and I asked about a new fabric brand I had bought online and if the owner would be getting it in stock. She also went off on me about putting her out of business by buying online. I have bought 90% of my quilting supplies at The Cotton Patch in Lafayette. And I will continue to do so. Just because your store exists, doesn't mean I have to buy from you. Trying being nice, or at least moderately less passive aggressive. I am planning to buy from every shop I visit on the quest this weekend. But not yours. read more

I read the review from another person. Being that this is on online world and never having visited the store, I should think I will not order from this place either. Then I actually called the store asking for online phone order for fabric (I sew bowties) and they were pretty rude to me. So knowing Yelp is online, the store is online through yelp, I decided not even to bother if they do or dont have a website. The owner of this store REALLY needs an attitude adjustment. SHE is angry, her employees are not happy, muttering under their breath about her criticizing and over-controlling. Fabric is $1/yd more than anyplace else on the Quilt Quest Shop Hop. I handed her my card to stamp, so I could get the little pieces of dot fabric before I shopped. She refused to stamp it because I had not filled in my address, etc. I told her I was not handing the card in for the drawing, so filling it out was of no value. She said she would not stamp it if it was not filled out! Now my address is very long, I was tired from a day of shopping (boo-hoo!), so I just walked out of the shop. BEST SELECTION BATIKS & JAPANESE PRINTS WOW. This place has an incredible range of these fabrics. Probably close to 100 bolts of each kind. And notice I use the term "Japanese" instead of "Asian" prints, because this is the kind of fabric that is actually used in Japan for everyday kimonos. Understated, muted colors and prints, rather than the garish prints most poeple associate with Asian fabrics. This place is tied for first place as my favorite quilt fabric store. Warning -- for some reason, my GPS couldn't find this place. It's tucked in kind of a strip-mall/office building spot. read more

I had a great experience here. I rarely buy fabric, so I'm often overwhelmed when I go into a fabric store. I wanted to match, as closely as possible, batik fabric to pieces of my favorite quilt. When I walked into New Pieces, I was welcomed by a friendly salesperson. When I told her what I was looking for, she asked whether I would like her to accompany me or if I wanted to browse on my own. What a perfect question! I thought for a minute and asked her to help me. We quickly found just what I was looking for. She made great suggestions and was patient with my questions, even though this was a small sale, and it was obvious that I am not going to become a regular customer (because this was just for a repair). Their selection was fantastic, and I would return any time I need batik fabric. read more

Staff and other customers on recent visit were helpful enough but rather pretentious and elitist. Parking is tight and difficult to maneuver. Went on to Stone Mountain & Daughter and felt a lot happier :-) The Cotton Patch in Lafayette is great as is Wooden Gate in Danville. New Pieces is a long way for me to go and I don't think I'll hurry back. read more

I know nothing about sewing, much less quilting. I went to the New Pieces "Block of the Month" free class to pick up some tips. I found that the people there were not cold at all, but were excited to have me there as a new quilter. It was very helpful, and I made my first quilting block that week. I will be going back for the "Block of the Month" as well as the "Saturday Sampler", a class that is held once a month on Saturday before the store opens. read more

This is my favorite quilt shop in the Bay Area; in fact I drive all the way from Menlo Park to Berkeley to shop here. The fabrics are meticulously organized by type and color, so it's easy to hone in on what you're looking for. They also have a great selection of fat quarters similarly organized and a wonderful staff who let you wander if that's your preference or, if you're looking for help, give you as much help as you need. I was recently having trouble deciding on the backing for a quilt I'd made, and, when I asked for help, two staff members spent time with me listening to what I was thinking of, suggesting options, talking through pro's and con's, willingly pulling out bolts of fabric, listening to my responses, and gradually fine-tuning their recommendations with them in mind. I made my choices and left happy but continued to worry over whether I'd made the right decision, so a couple of days later I went back, and they not only remembered me but they remembered the fabrics we had looked at and my reactions to many of them. They listened to my concerns, made no effort to push me in one direction or another, and found more options for me to consider. In the process, they were able to remind me what I had said was important and definitely helped me clarify my thoughts. By the end, I reconfirmed my previous decision but from a much clearer perspective. They were very generous with their time, never seemed rushed or inconvenienced, and I left happy! read more

I am a mid-beginning quilter and love coming here. They are helpful and patient. The prices are comparable to the other quilt shops. I for one am not going to order fabric on line and put these local shops out of business! Parking is fine they have their own lot here. I'm working on my first big quilt. I'm almost at the end of piecing the top and I suddenly got super excited about the whole thing so I drove across town to buy batting and safety pins. I walked in, and a few women said hi to me and 1 asked me if I needed help with anything. They didn't make me feel like I was interrupting their conversation, but they truly wanted to help me. Karen was fabulous. She talked to me about the different kinds of batting and then asked what size I needed. Since I'm not really done with the top yet, we estimated what size I'd need, but she recommended that I finish the top, then come back and buy the right size batting. She was amazing at educating me. I will definitely be back when I'm ready to buy the batting. read more

Last week, I drove a friend to Berkeley so she could meet her carpool group for the Shop Hop. Lucky for me! I had heard about New Pieces, but had never made the hour drive over there. Well, that's no longer an issue. It is definitely one of the best shops not just in the Bay Area, but in the nation (I travel a lot and stop at every quilt shop in the area). Like one of the other reviewers, I love the big selection of muted tone Japanese prints and batiks. They also have a great selection of modern prints and minkees. For bargain hunters, there's a larger selection than I've seen in any store. Love it all! So, the best part...the service! The women I met on the first day - Sharona and an employee who is also a geologist (!), made my experience so great that yesterday, I was back with two friends - one from Santa Rosa and one from Valley Springs. Yes, they didn't mind the drive either for what was at the other end. Thanks ladies, for your hard work and lovely store!!! driving Driving tip: We were shopping at the great shops on 4th Street, Berkeley, and kept driving toward Gilman St. and Albany (east?), then turning left into the parking lot just before the end of the road. I strongly recommend the quilting services at New Pieces. I brought in a top for rush quilting on March 15. It was "Improvisational" piecing, and I wasn't sure how I wanted to trim it, meaning the edge was rather untidy, which worried me a lot. But they handled it no problem. I needed the quilt back in time for a wedding, hence the rush job. Turns out the quilt was finished in March 17th. But I didn't get the quilt until April 19th. Seems they'd called me once, and left a message, which I'd not received. They didn't call me again. They've since changed their policy to recall if there is no response to their initial notice. But Nevermind that! Great quilting, and I'll use them again! read more

Wonderful shop. Great parking, so close to freeway, friendly, encouraging helpful ladies, prices not much more than other quilt shops in the area. The staff will help with any problem one might bring to them; they encourage and compliment even the most amateurish effort (which is so necessary for beginners to want to continue) and make one feel so accomplished and talented. Their remnant prices meet expectations; the fabric is all top quality. They have half price bolts and 25% off bolts. I recommend this shop to all who love fabric or want to get started on a new field of fun. read more

These folks do a fantastic job. They have dozens of patterns to choose from, they are very helpful if you want input regarding thread, backing, pattern, etc. I would easily give them 5 stars but they're a little inconsistent regarding information about your project. It depends on who is waiting on you - some tell you it will be 3-5 weeks, some tell you 3 weeks but likely sooner. If you call to check on your project, it's a crap shoot. They're really backed up, one person will tell you. The next day someone else will tell you your project is in process, next, or - something inconsistent with what you were told the day before, basically. They do a fantastic job and you won't be disappointed - it's just better not to make too many inquiries about the schedule! read more

Large selection of quilting fabrics. Great number of Japanese cottons. I was looking for fabrics to match a quilt in progress but sadly came out empty handed. Definitely worth checking out but I prefer the selections (and prices!) at Stone Mountain. Looked like a bright and welcome place for small classes. read more
