Two stars is this unique space where the store is clean and has fairly good stock. The self checkout works and means you're in and out quickly. Do not expect anything else. I've been here a number of times and found the staff unhelpful. As somebody who once worked at a Best Buy I feel like I can critique being a staff member who can't direct customers are simply 'not trying.' What particularly motivates me to write the review was coming in for a two for one sale, for frames that were clearly marked two for one, having it ring up as buy one get one at 50% off. The staff then went on to describe to me what I did wrong in selecting the frame and tried to call somebody up to help me find the right frame. After waiting a few minutes I decided to just buy the frame I brought up front so that I could move on with my day. With that said, it's not one star because, well, certainly could be worse. Yikes. Went to pick up a balloon order I had placed online this afternoon and was met with terrible customer service from the store manager. My order wasn't there and they couldn't tell me why. Manager claimed that they had shut down online ordering. He couldn't tell me why I was able to place an order much earlier in the day when they had supposedly already shut down their system. Despite the fact that their store would be open for another 2 hours, he refused to go ahead and fill my order. Refused to make eye contact and never apologized to me for the mix up. Clearly could not care less about his job. There was another employee behind the counter who seemed frazzled by all the online orders and she was genuinely apologetic about the mix up and offered to go fill my order for me, even after her manager had cancelled it. Ok, I'll start with a good experience: We ordered balloons for pick up for my son's birthday and after placing the order online and calling to double check my pick up time, they were ready as promised. The bad: I just had the most horrible unprofessional interaction with their manager regarding a delivery order. I placed a same day delivery order for helium filled balloons. When the delivery guy arrived the balloons were in a plastic bag and not inflated. After calling the store the manager claimed when the delivery guy arrived they didn't see in their system that they needed helium so they handed him the balloons. They said I'd need to take it up w Door Dash. I pushed them on this bc it wasn't clear at all on the Michael's site that I was booking a Door Dash order--I was placing a Michael's balloon order and they were responsible for ensuring the order was correct, not some random delivery guy. Anyways, never again will I get delivery. Now I need to go to the store before they close to get inflated balloons and also deal with Door Dash who may or may not reimburse the issue with the order. When we first walked in we asked the security guard at the door where we'd find the items on our list and he gave us great directions. We've only had positive experiences here so I don't understand the negative comments about staff. I find it useful to adjust my mindset when walking into a big box store. I just left this store after going in to receive a quote for a custom framing job. Two things to note. 1) I have been to this location before to get a quote and the assistant was incredibly helpful. At the time I wanted to use a frame I had bit it turned out to be too small. They were extremely helpful in walking me through mat options, sizing etc so when I returned I was ready to purchase services. 2) I had just left Brick's Arts and there quote was around 500. So I walk I to the framing area and this person tells at me, are you here for a custom frame to which I reply yes. They ask the size and then say it will be about 250. I'm taken aback because a custom job has nuance, so I say are you not able to assist me to which it replies with a sigh and comes and sits down at the station. It makes a huge production of grabbing some kind of chart and proceeds to say at the size it's between 250 -280. Mind you I had been quoted nearly double so I'm thinking it sounds doable but if the Michael's employees can't even be bothered to show me options I'm not spending hundreds of dollars. Recently shopped here on 11/21/2025 for a couple of projects I'm working on. As I'm cruising down various isles with my shopping cart, I noticed the same guy kept popping up. I finally asked him, if he was following me... He said: "you caught me". Then he stopped following me. I was hoping to find a salesclerk to help me expedite my visit, but none available. When I was able to get a clerk at their workstation (fabric and cashier), they were sullen and kinda dismissive to me. Ladies there, it's a craft store, not some high-end boutique. Never mind the fact, this store has limited inventory so I spent too much time searching for my items I needed and had to figure out alternatives or will order from an online store. And when did find items i needed, they were grossly over-priced. This why folks prefer shopping online now. read more

What is happening to Michaels? I accepted that all the smaller Mom & Pops art supplies stores have been overtaken by Michaels & that quality arts & crafts are no longer available to buy locally, but now it seems like Michaels has done something crazy. I filled up my cart today with hundreds of $$$ of supplies - as I tend to do once or twice a year... and headed to the check-out. There were a group of 5 employees chatting about life behind the registers, but none of them were helping customers check out. It was 100% self-checkout. I am handicapped & asked for help, but they all told me they were not allowed to help any customers check out unless the customer was paying in cash. I was surprised. I went ahead and paid for everything, then asked for a bag - which they always supplied to shoppers in the past. I would definitely need a bag to take everything in my cart with me to my car. They told me that they don't have any bags for customers any more. I asked if I could pay for a bag & they said they didn't have any bags - they girl just said "We're Out!". I was just shocked at the lack of customer service and this new policy where they are not allowed to help any customers. I will also add that when I first arrived at the store, I asked three different employees where a product was that I was looking to purchase. They all said, "Oh yeah, we carry that", just look around the back corner".. or they would point "just go in that direction". I never found the product & got tired of asking the employees who seemed to make it their 'job' to not help anyone. The only people who seemed to have any sense were the two women in the framing department. They actually were kind & professional & wanted to help me find the product I was looking for, but they did not know where the product was, nor if the store carried it because they were just focused on framing art and photos. All the employees were polite when they talked to me, all friendly conversations. I really blame the corporation - as it seems that they do not care for their employees. When cashiers are replaced by customers doing their own 'check out', they will soon no longer hire cashiers/employees, and the current employees will lose their jobs. I see this happening everywhere & the unemployment rate is climbing along with the price of basic food, etc.. shame on Michaels. I will be looking to find another arts & crafts store. Very disappointed. I wonder if all the Michaels stores have this new policy of not helping customers - even handicapped customers with checkout? Also - no bags? They could have put a sign at the front of the building announcing that customers need to bring their own bags - but no - they just embarrass customers by letting them find out after they have filled their shopping carts & paid for a zillion items & have no way to bring them out of the store. I woudn't be surprised if the next time I walked in there, the only employees were a couple AI robots. read more

Of course I've shopped at Michaels over the years. Sometimes with great success and others not quite finding what I am looking for. This morning I felt like my experience was extraordinarily successful. I had a meeting planned with an activity but I had left an art supplies at home. I consulted with my sister for an on the fly idea and Michael's had colored pencils and markers on sale buy1, get 1 50% off. Great deal and 10 minutes later I was back in the car headed towards the office. I was happy that the customer service rep at the registers was engaging and helpful, and they now have self check out, which made my check out even quicker. Had the worst experience in the framing department, paid $1200 and everything went wrong. The woman who did the work made the piece crooked and had the worst customer service skills. Overall would not go back and would try a different location or different company all together. Review for custom framing It had been a process to get the frame completed. I can forgive 1 mistake even 2 but to have the mistakes keep rolling in when we have been patient and understanding of the process is insane. We went in for a holiday sale 80% off custom framing. I finished teaching and drove 30 miles in traffic because this was the only Michael's that carried what I ordered: two long rolls of paper, so of course they're going to be stored somewhere else where they'll fit (which was in a cabinet behind the counter with a bunch of other stuff blocking the way.) I felt weird about going through there, so I asked the only lady working at the register, because it also says if you need assistance, ask a team member. I went into Michael's with over an hour before they closed and I quickly picked out three fabrics that I wanted. I went up to their little table with the cutting board on it, and I put my fabric down. The security guard calls for someone to come cut the fabric and we have at this .45 minutes before the closing of the store I was told no one was available to cut the fabric. I was told the lady's name was Elizabeth, although the security guard appeared to be searching for a name to give me. I was told there's absolutely no one to come cut fabric because they're no longer cutting fabric at this hour. There are absolutely no signs posted anywhere that say go to the counter before such a time so there should've been absolutely no reason why I couldn't have gotten my fabric cut. This is the only Michaels that carries any fabric in the Bay Area and I will never go back there again. What really sucks is that this is an out-of-the-way place for me to get fabric, so that you for wasting my time. If I could give zero stars, I absolutely would. Your Staff people who are willing to help, not just stand there. There were no other customers in the store. This was an absolute waste of my time. read more

After placing the order, I received an email for pickup. The store is located within one of the Hollis St. shopping strip malls and parking was not an issue. Walking in, I was greeted by a worker and she directed me to the registers for the online pickup. A worker there walked up and asked for my name and ID and she went to Online Pickup cabinets and retrieved my order. Along with DIY celebratory themes you might need. Christmas sales are happening this last week of November till the following month. Everything is so well organized and put out. This location has super rough and underrepresented service today, and it's mad crowded. Although they can't help that it's crowded, it's still annoying. They know it's Labor Day, a three day weekend, and they're running a sale. Ummm... doesn't make much sense to only have 2 registers open and 11 folks standing in line. Not to mention, I asked one man working the floor, where the painters tape was and his reply was, "let me help this customer, and I'll be right there, but it's a few aisles over", so I roamed around for 10 minutes looking, and lightweight waiting on him. Normally I'd go back and say, "excuse me" again, but I called myself being patient and chill--look what it got me? No help. Ha. That's what I get for not being my normal assertive self--anyway, I've digressed. So, the sales associate never showed up, only for us to connect eyes 15 minutes later, with him walking past me like he was hoping I didn't ask him for help a second time, all while I still hadn't found the tape. I ended up asking someone else, and still had to rummage because it was in an inconspicuous spot. Ummm.. HELP, folks, geesh. I get you're busy today, but plan your staff according to the sale and holiday weekend. Nevertheless, the sale was good, and the cashier was cool. They saved the shopping experience and brought their YELP review from the 1 star that I was initially offering them, to a whopping 3 stars. I believe their name we Janice or something close. I had two cloth prints framed at this store. The staff worked quickly and professionally. I know that sometimes these two concepts usually don't coexist in art but in my case it all came together perfectly. I also had a frame which I purchased the day before thinking that I could do it myself. Nope. Well, I lost the receipt and the bar code which made the return impossible. I don't recommend throwing away any documentation until you are well beyond the shadow of any doubt of returning the item. At any rate, after testing the patience of virtually every staff member and manager in the store (I may have even shed a tear or two) the manager took pity and gave me a gift card for which I am immensely grateful. I've been a Michael's Emeryville faithful customer for about 15 years. Today I canceled an order and will very likely never return to Michael's and will shop Blick's for my art supplies. I ordered new Sharpies pens on 7/29/24. On 7/31 I received an email with huge red letters that read "YOUR ORDER HAS SHIPPED. We just shipped your order." They had not. Then I got another message stating the items would arrive by 7:00 pm today (08/02/24). It did not arrive, and when I called the store, the person who answered the phone was very snarky, so I next chatted online to seek help from an expert about this; however, I was offered the 'opportunity' to complete a form to speak with an (yet another) expert for a $5 fee. I didn't feel I need to pay for their staff to do their job! So, I canceled my order. I should have been doing laundry and otherwise preparing to report to the school campus where I teach, but instead I spent the day waiting on a delivery that was coming from a mere 4.3 miles away. The associate-- Shauna-- went above and beyond in helping me! She cleaned up the entire piece and helped fill in all the dings around the frame. My prior experience with Michaels and its framing services was satisfactory but nothing special. But this experience today was great. Shauna was very friendly and solved all my issues and then some. It is a customer experience like that one which will make me think of Michaels next time for my framing needs and other art/craft needs moving forward. Seriously came here four times in a week. Those goddamn coupons! But also I kept running out of supplies and I came here twice for their free classes. I learned how to make a crazy looking Valentine's day card and also learned how to craft my own jewelry. Anyone who knows Michael's knows that the sales here come and go. They pretty much heavily discount a bunch of things for a week at a time, so you kinda just come in from time to time to see what's up. Then of course there are the coupons which allow you to buy one item at a heavy discount at a time, lol. I've gotten ribbon here for lei making and RIT dye to dye up my clothes and dark wash my jeans. Staff is helpful if you ask, but I just kinda wander around. The classroom for the free class is very small and not the most updated. The Alameda location is nicer for sure. TODAY'S PURCHASE at MICHAELS in EMERYVILLE. I bought three bottles of Testor's enamel (graphite metallic, flat sky blue, and ivory glossy). Also, I bought a pirate's treasure chest. The treasure chest is made of wood, and the base measures 4.5 inches x 7 inches. A fancy brass latch can be used to keep the lid securely closed. Two leather straps are attached to the treasure chest with wide brass rivets. The leather straps are an elegant part of the treasure chest's design. Each of the two ends of the treasure chest have fancy brass handles that flip up and down. I use the treasure chest for storing smooth stones having unusual colored patterns that I've found at various beaches. An entire aisle at Michaels contains small wooden chests, wooden jewelry boxes with a see-through glass top, seven styles of wooden bird houses, a wooden lighthouse, and a row of 3 wooden apartment buildings where each apartment has its own flight of steps leading up to the front door. Each of the 3 apartments has a door on a brass hinge. Also, there is a wooden wild west saloon. If you enjoy being amazed, I suggest that you feast your eyes on this charming collection of wooden buildings and treasure chests. OTHER HOBBY-RELATED SUPPLIES. The Emeryville location also has model car kits, including kits for making the 1966 Chevy Nova, 1967 Chevelle, Ford Bronco, 2017 Ford GT, Camaro Concept Car, and 1969 Boss 302 Mustang. Don't use their self checkout and you might have an okay experience. Their checkout system is very poor thanks to the use (or non-use) of self checkout machines. I was diverted out of line to use one that would not accept my credit card input whatever I tried. There's a button to call for assistance but no assistance to be had. The mother and child next to me had trouble with their machine not scanning select items. The next machine has an "out of service" sign. I went back to the end of the line again to wait for a real person to check me out. She tried to direct me back to the self checkout. By refusing, I got out of there in less than a minute. I certainly don't blame the workers, but the company's desire to cut costs has made their store unappealing. read more

Review is for the framing department. This is literally the worst framing experience I've ever had. Here's why: 1. This framing started in June of 2021! Still not finished! 2. They lost a piece of my art and then found it (the pieces are LARGE) 3. The mating came back wrong so I returned it and they said it would be a two week turn around time (it's been over two months) 4. I brought in two more pieces of art when I returned the originals that had been matted at a different Michael's where the photos were slipping and told them to match the matting exactly like those and asked to have those photos adjusted in the frame (said it would be a two week turn around and were sorry the first weren't matted correctly) 5. They didn't give me any paper work for dropping off the two that needed adjusting said the printers were down and they were using a new system and that I would get an email with all the info 6. I did not get an email 7. THEY LOST ANOTHER PIECE OF MY LARGE ART THAT WAS ALREADY FRAMED AND JUST NEEDED ADJUSTING! 7. Told me there was nothing they could do about it because there was no record of it 8. I honestly had good conversations with Mike and when I dropped off the other two pieces to have them merely adjust the photo I trusted them and thought I was in good hands 9. Months later the new store manager Maria is finally helping me figure out how to resolve this but I am beyond frustrated that I trusted them and am now dealing with this read more

There is no one to help, I came back twice at the times they told me and both times the only person who can help had "left early" and then was "at lunch". I offered to wait for them to come back and they said they didn't know when that would be. Once the framing was ordered there was zero communication. I came back when it was said to be completed and it was not even started. Obviously they are understaffed, but I will never ever get anything framed here again. They took twice as long as estimated to finish my custom framing; they were supposed to call when it was ready, but I had to track them down over multiple days and calls. It's also expensive as hell for raggedy work. The frame is crooked. It's like a drunk parallelogram. I don't even understand how they did that. Just pay to go to a local framer - you're not saving that much by going to Michael's and you're getting much lower quality work. read more
