With the exception of a couple, most of my tattoos have been done here. I have had no issues what so ever. They all do amazing work. Very kind and respectful. I absolutely love Kayla Jade and her style. She's the sweetest person and a absolute awesome artist. I am currently working to get in for another one. I would definitely recommend all of the artists. Awesome things are happening here. 3 of us were looking for get our tats and we were having a hard time looking for places to do walk ins. So as we were sitting down over a pitcher of beer and goofy bread. My cousin whips out his phone phone and found this spot. Said that they can entertain a walk in right around 3pm. We definitely went right after our snack time. So, my cousin got a dope dream catcher/compass tat on his shoulder. I got my maps filled in with all the places ive been to. My husband, he got his coy ying yang lucky tat. Place was really nice,, definitely looked a lot better inside than what you would expect from the outside. The artists were really cool too. We were expecting just my cousin to get his, but they ended up knocking out all three of us out. So yea!!! SUPER KUDOS! I would totally get my tattoo here again. I would definitely schedule an appointment next time. Cause we just happened to them all done with theirs when we came through. So it was just luck on our side that we got ink done. The other reviewers aren't lying about the bad customer service. Made my appointment for a full chest piece, paid my deposit. When I showed up, the artist acted like he didn't know it was a chest tattoo even though i had clearly described it and talked about the price. After an hour, he declared that he wasn't ready to do the tattoo that I paid a deposit for and took a day off work to get. As a consolation, Josh told me I could come back in 2 more weeks, presumably for the same sort of treatment. What really made me angry was that he said he couldn't do it because he didn't want to be late for his later client. There are plenty of good artists out there. Why subject yourself to this kind of treatment? read more

Been a regular here for about 8 years. Love the work that Patrick & Phil do. They've been a solid duo tattooing there since I've been going here. Always up front on cost and affordable. Awful customer service. The artist who tattooed me was really obnoxious and had a serious inferiority complex and the fella behind the counter was not the brightest bulb, to say the least. He asked me the same question like 10 times. While I was getting tattooed, I asked the artist how long he had been tattooing; A pretty standard question. Instead of responding like a normal human being, he decided to be a douche and say "It doesn't matter. It's about my portfolio." ...Dude I was just curious as to how long you've been in the business, you don't have to get all holier than thou on me. Later, my friend asked him who his favorite character was in Alice in Wonderland since he had all sorts of cool memorabilia all over the room. He didn't even have the decency to humor her and make small talk. He goes "Um. It's really not about that for me." After checking out a few of the other tattoo shops that seem to litter the Brownstown area (there are four of them within a mile stretch on Telegraph), I was happy to go to New Skool. I knew what I wanted for a tattoo and even printed up the design from online. I went to a place nearby to inquire about price, and the guy was like "um, I don't know, maybe $200 depending on size," even though I told him exactly how large and where I wanted it. I called a second place, but the guy seemed impatient and unwilling to give me any information. I understand a lot of tattoo shops probably get idiots going in there, but I knew what I was doing. My friend and I went to New Skool together, and you don't need an appointment (although if they're busy, you might have to come back later). We both knew what we wanted, and Phil was very enthusiastic and talkative. You can tell he loves his job, and he was going through all of his techniques and practices, even showing us his portfolio. He knows everything about tattoos, especially with after-care techniques. He was very friendly, which eased our tensions. He did my friend's tattoo in about 15 minutes. He works very quickly but thorough. He told me my tattoo would cost $120, which I thought was a great price for a five inch black tattoo. Mine was done in about 25 minutes, and he does his best to set a relaxing atmosphere. It's comfortable, and he turns on any music of your choice. read more

I had my ears pierced here a few months back. It was $60 and I had absolutely zero swelling and very minimal bleeding throughout my healing process, which was great! However, I received zero aftercare instruction and had to follow up with a phone call. Even then I wasn't given much to go on and relied on my friend's cleaning instructions, which worked for me. read more

I've been getting tattooed here since 2002. I've never gotten anything remotely bad done here. All of my work looks great! This Kendra girl must have a bone to pick. The tattoo work I received was decent. However the shop is just dirty and unclean. I do not know if wayne county's health department just never goes to the shop or if they do not care. The artist used no protective barriers on any surface. Had no saran wrap to be seen. Nothing was covered, the dude didnt change his gloves at all. Basically the whole shop is just asking for a mrsa infection to get passed around. No matter how cool the tattoo is, if your artist hasnt taken a blood borne pathogens class its the same as getting a kitchen tattoo. read more

Apparently things have changed over the years since this place is fantastic. The shop manager was super helpful and got me a quote immediately and scheduled my appointment without any issues. The day of the appointment the artist was extremely friendly and personable, not to mention on-time. I took a lot of time to search for an artist to start and finish a full sleeve idea I have, and I found that artist with Phil. His work speaks for itself, not to mention his wall and cabinet of awards over the years. Everyone there was friendly and knowledgeable. I can't wait to go back for another session. read more

The place is called New Skool Tattoos but this is a piercing review. I wasn't even going to write this review but I felt compelled to let people know of my particular experience after about a year later. I went in to get my septum pierced, and the piercer was friendly and warned me that it might not be straight because it's a hard piercing (beforehand). However during the piercing there wasn't much talking and it was rather fast. The piercing was very painful and make a loud pop noise. It was somewhat straight, but I got up and saw the ring was so low it basically touched my upper lip, it also rested flat against my philtrum. He remarked that it was just the ring and I could change it later and at least it was straight. I was wrongly trusting and listened to him that it was indeed a good placement. I should have done more research on my own. I came to find out septum piercings are supposed to go through the sweet spot which is the thin flap of skin between the hard cartilages in your nose. My septum was pierced straight through the thick cartilage in my lower nose. This caused more pain, longer healing time, inability to flip up inside my nose (also piercing was visible from the side of my nose), if I wanted to stretch my septum it would have ripped right through the bottom of my nose, and the piercing looked terrible resting against my lip and it moved of course whenever I talked. I went back and got it removed and told him it was too low, and I was told it was just my nose, and that I had to tell him if I had wanted it higher up (unbelievable, telling the piercer how to properly place a piercing?) I wasn't even given a tissue on my way out as my nose started to bleed. Now I can't speak for this place as a tattoo shop, they might be great for that. But if you want a piercing, especially a septum piercing I highly suggest going somewhere else where the piercer is more skilled about placement. I went here because I live in flat rock and it was the closest shop, and he gave me the speech about he's been doing piercings for x amount of years on the phone so I trusted his judgment of where placement should be without question, when I should have known beforehand septum's go in the sweet spot not through hard nose cartilages. I felt like I had to warn people especially since over a year later and after lots of research and looking at different shops I had my septum re-pierced at Pangea piercing in ann arbor. It was more expensive, but it was a totally different experience. I was talked through the whole procedure, he (Kenny) marked my nose, actually took time to feel around for my sweet spot, he didn't use hard clamps and the actual piercing was completely painless with no "pop" noise, and afterwards there was no pain either. When I had my septum done at New Skool tattoo my whole front set of teeth hurt and I could barely talk. I have been unable to find my original picture showing the first time I got my septum done at New Skool Tattoos but if I do I will come back and upload my new piercing and my piercing from New Skool Tattoos to show the huge difference. My new septum piercing is high up, doesn't even touch anywhere near my top lip or mouth area at all, and is perfectly centered. I've talked to quite a few other piercers about my experience at New skool tattoos and it was unanimous that it was pierced incorrectly in the wrong spot. read more

I went in the first week of July to talk about having a portrait style tattoo done. I was told I would be emailed over pictures of what Patrick was going to draw up. 3-4 weeks went by and I never heard anything back. I reached out to make sure that the tattoo was something that he was still interested in doing. When he responded back he said they were super busy and in so many words told me that he had forgotten about me. A week and a half later he finally sent me over a picture of what he had drawn up. I really liked it but there were a few things I wanted to change. I sent over a couple of emails with the changes I wanted to do and asked when we could set up an appointment time. It's been over a month and still no response back. Clearly they are too busy to complete the work and I have made other arrangements to have the tattoo completed elsewhere. I was a loyal customer to New Skool and even recommended friends and family to go and support them. Unfortunately, this experience has changed that. Patrick is good at what he does but there are plenty of tattoo parlors downriver with talented tattoo artists. read more

After a bunch of Tattoos I was told that I was not welcomed back BY ANYONE. Reason? The owner cannot get over his ego and such being said, the issue was touch ups. I have so much missing ink that people think that the work is old. I paid, was polite, tipped, and referred everyone...at first. Minute you have an issue, you are out. Very unprofessional. I have NEVER IN MY LIFE been told what I was told by the cruel owner. I will not even mention his name because I am just informing future customers what will happen if you dare say anything, ask questions, have problems with the work etc. Bottom line is, it is your body, something you have to live with til the day you die. Damn right I am going to ask questions. I am out money because they will not fix anything. When asked how I upset them so much, I was berated. None of this matters considering that the owner has no problem telling you he has severe issues dealing with the public and is even afraid to talk on the phone to his customers. Very sad that I have to live with such a cruel persons work. I feel like I have been marked, not tattooed. read more
