Believe me when I tell you that I was nervous as hell going outside my regular guy, but he would not do my sternum, so I had to find someone else. I sent Brian a few ideas that I liked and told him to use those for inspiration- I wanted the artists true work and always give my artist free range to play with my concept. Brian came up with a lotus flower idea and added some details that i liked, and he came up with something that matched my energy and meaning behind the tattoo. The sternum is not an easy tattoo to sit through, but he did his best to distract me and keep me on the table as long as possible- got it done in 2 sessions with his help. The first thing that struck me was how busy it was on a Wednesday evening. Even so, the receptionist was pleasant and I was given paperwork to complete pretty quickly. The vibe is a friendly, relaxed one - lots of great art on the walls, a case of body jewelry to peruse, and a slideshow on a TV which displayed information and pictures of work by the tattoo artists and piercer. I observed a couple of guys getting tattoos, and my partner & I chatted with the receptionist as we waited. "Evil" Dave, the piercer, had just finished piercing the navels of two teenage girls, accompanied by their guardian - they looked a little wan when they came out, but there were no tears. I was there to get my nostril pierced, and from the time Dave walked me back to the time I was walking out of the place only a short fifteen minutes had elapsed. Dave was happy to let my partner watch the procedure, and he explained every step in detail. I was impressed with his degree of care and knowledge. He also has a great piercing 'bedside manner' - just the right blend of information and jokes - which put me totally at ease. If I ever get another piercing in the Ann Arbor area, it will definitely be at Liquid Swordz.

The shop itself is in a good location with a decent amount of parking, and inside it is inspiring. There are lots of plants and beautiful art. It is body-positive and woman-positive with more than one woman tattoo artist in residence. The tattoo work areas are separated with short walls and actual doors so privacy is controlled. It also allows each artist to have her own space full of the energy she wants. This part of the shop's design really adds to the experience of being worked on there. It allows the creative energy to bubble around without feeling intrusive or exposed while being worked on. It can also shift during a session - door open or closed. I have two fairly large, artist-original pieces done by Autum McCallister (Lethal Lady). Her work is magical! You can find it on Instagram or Facebook, or stop in to see her. She also does commission pieces (your design). Autum's eye for color, shape, and layout makes for truly gorgeous body art. When I have requested (small) changes to a design, she is thoughtful and takes her time to work through what will work well with the piece and fits with what I like. She'll also make some changes as she works and sees the piece come to life on your body. To top it off, she has a great sense of humor, and we have fun conversations with a lot of laughter. Though I haven't worked with any other artists at this shop, I have listened to them work and seen some of it. Stop in with your idea, and whoever you talk to will either be a good choice or tell you who the right person for your piece would be.

Tyler, at Be Kind Body Piercing sterilized the jewelry in front of us and pulled the needle out of the sterile packaging in front of us. The quality was amazing. Fast forward, my daughter had to have testing done and wasn't able to leave her piercing in. There wasn't an appointment available, so we joined the "waitlist." Within fifteen minutes, we received a text to come on in. Tyler removed her metal jewelry and replaced it with a temporary glass piece. Once her testing was done, we went back the next day for a new piece of jewelry. He put it in and she was "good as new." Tyler, the owner is very kind and makes his customers feel welcomed.
