From the original owner, George Howe, to his brother Michael Howe, to Ren Mireles, Adam Lee and Erik Alberg, this cozy (440 sq. ft.) shop has evolved and matured. Current owner Erik Alberg, aka"George the 5th", had been a patron for more than 30-years before purchasing the shop late in 2025, continuing the tradition. I've done business with them all. The cigar selection (120+ facings) is carefully curated to feature some of the best cigars available. As George himself was famous for saying "They're All Good!" New sticks are brought in regularly and old favorites also are stocked. New for 2026, Jorge's Cigars are back in the shop! Cuban American Jorge Casimiro started rolling cigars at George's Smoke Shop more than a decade ago and since has become a well-respected cigar manufacturer. George's Smoke Shop also features a wide selection of custom pipe tobaccos including the venerable "George's Blend", as well as pipes and pipe smoking accoutrement. Cigar lighters, cutters, and other items also are available. The cigar lounge at the rear features a half-dozen comfy chairs, two TV screens, and plenty of lighters and cutters. This is my go-to place for sports! One thing that sets George's apart from a lot of shops is that all the regulars, whether they're 21 or 81 years old, are friendly and welcoming. I purposely go out of my way to try to keep my business in small locally owned shops. Owner refused to sell me a $4 box of incense because he wouldn't charge my card for any sale under $10. I only had $3 cash on me so I started to walk away. He then decided he would "do me a favor" and agree to run my card if I bought a 2nd box making my total still under his $10 REQUIREMENT. I spent decades of my life in retail sales up to and including district mgr for HUGE chain of stores similar to this type of business. I also spent many years in customer satisfaction research in every scenario imaginable including as a secret shopper. If his goal is to upsell, I get it. Upselling can be a HUGE money maker when its done right. Upselling by way of threat or intimidation is morally bankrupt and only speaks to a lower level of care for customer retention. I will never be back.

It seems like the people working in this store aren't very enthusiastic or eager to help. Last time I went there (within the past month) they were out of 3 things I specifically stopped there for (one of the was just organic ground beef - the cooler shelves were bare). Another of the things was in the skin care aisle, and there was an empty box where the item had sold out. I asked the employee if they happened to have any in back. She told me they didn't, so I asked if she knew when they might get their next delivery (this is actually a common question at Harvest Health and they usually know when the Red Rooster bread will come in, or the Hilhof milk or whatever. The manager happened to be walking by, so she stopped her and told her what I was looking for and if it should come in soon. She just kept walking as she said she didn't know. Later she was by the registers and just seemed really unfriendly as if she were bored being there. Much better experiences when I go to the Hudsonville location or stop at the health food store on S. Washington in Holland.

But to my children this place is an amazing treasured purveyor of beautiful rocks - a place they will root through various little cravable beautiful stones, gems, and carvings. A place they would rather go to blow their walking-around money than even the toy store. We could easily go four times in a one week vacation, crossing our fingers and hoping each time the credit card machine works. This may not be the target clientele of Mother Moon but they are friendly and patient and treat our children well, and that is all we could ask.

My cousin recently participated in her first craft fair selling her handmade jewelry and she dropped a nice chunk of her earnings here on some really beautiful stones for her collection!
