I have been driving by this interesting market and gas station for the last month. i finally stopped and found a little slice of funkiness. What a fun rest stop. I tried the chicken salad sandwich and it was incredibly satisfying. The store deserves an exploration and has a little bit of everything. Strasburg, VA. Shell/New Star Market. Dec, 2025. We were traveling between Warrenton, VA and Thomas, WV, having just exited I-81 near Strasburg. We wanted to fill up on gas before "going over the mountain". GPS led us to the New Star Market/Shell Gas Station, which was only about a mile off I-81 and directly on our route. The self-service gas area was a bit congested, but we squeezed behind a parked pickup to get to a pump. Gas prices were excellent at $2,75/gallon. I went to check out the small convenience store. They seemed to have pretty much everything that a traveler might want or need, including snacks, a deli, and more. Many other reviewers have mentioned BBQ, and an outdoor sign, advertised this as well. Somehow, my husband and I both missed this -- probably because it wasn't lunch time for us yet! My middle kid raved about the bbq pork sandwich last time we stopped here to gas the vehicle prior to heading to WVa. Entire skiing trip he couldn't wait to eat another of their BBQ pork sandwich. So, of course I got a BBQ chicken this time for myself, 3 pork BBQ sandwiches for the kids and hubby and a Mac and cheese for my other kid. $37. Verdict? Not cheap, but I concur with my kiddo and can verify that the sandwiches are pretty tasty. They do have little cups of various BBQ sauces to go. Alright new star, you got another fan! read more

I was excited to visit New Star Market after seeing all the good reviews. I stopped in late morning for a breakfast sandwich. What I found is that they pre-make their breakfast sandwiches, wrap them in cellophane and then keep them in a warmer. The sandwiches looked like they had been in the warmer for a while. I asked if they would make me a fresh breakfast sandwich - I was told no. So I opted for the last sausage, egg, and cheese sammie on toast. I unwrapped the sammie and got out on the road. The sandwich clearly had been sitting in the warmer to long. The sandwich was dry - the egg and sausage had started to dry out. Disappointed. Great place for Korean barbecued pulled chicken and pulled pork sandwiches! And, the New Star Market, in addition to self-serve gas pumps, has pretty much every essential product you may need on a trip or at home, food, drink, snacks, candy and much more. Also, an ice cream stand outside with tables so you can sit for a rest. Definitely worth a stop for the sandwiches. What a find! New Star Market doesn't seem like much from the outside, but this little market offers your typical mini mart items (canned goods, beverages, drinks, ice cream, snacks, etc.). In addition, they also have a smoker outside and offers some great BBQ! The BBQ menu offers pulled pork sandwiches, brisket, ribs (half and full), and various sides (mac and cheese, fried rice, baked beans, mixed veggies, and broccoli and cheese), coming in small, medium, or large. We had to try all the Q - the pulled pork was tender and moist; the brisket had the right amount of fat and was very flavorful; and, the ribs were fall-of-the-bone and had a nice smokey taste to it. For sides, some of the items were sold out; we had the mac and cheese (super cheesy, slightly grainy, but really good), and the baked beans (made in the slow cooker and kept warm, this was thick and hearty). Housemade BBQ sauces include Cherry Dr Pepper, Honey Mustard, Sweet Honey, and Crump Signature (which is a mix of hot and spicy). We liked the hot and spicy one, as that complemented the meats very well. Service was super friendly! Definitely a locally-owned and -run shop by a couple and their son. The place is very cute and charming - there's even a church attached to it! Be sure to stop on by - you'll enjoy the BBQ and talking with the friendly owners! Plenty of pork in the sandwich with good sauces, delicious fried rice, which is a meal in itself. Small roadside market and coffee/tea add on. The drink and dessert cafe closes next weekend so we're glad we didn't miss it although we missed the ice cream! so glad we stopped on our way and highly recommend. In nice weather you can sit outside, but since it's cold, we ate in our car. Funky cute and delish! read more

What a fun place! You can get gas, food, and drinks here. Ribs, chicken, pulled pork sandwiches inside. There is a little cafe outside with coffee, tea, bubble tea, sundae, and doggy ice cream. The half rack of rib is the most delicious and bargain food item you will ever find on a road trip. We also ordered the pulled pork sandwich which is a solid snack. Mac and cheese was very light and not what I expected. Service was super friendly. Best gas station food and so glad I found this gem that made the long trip tolerable. The amount of ribs in the half rack was so generous that I had enough to reheat for dinner. Clean bathrooms as well!! They also have a small outdoor seating area on the side that we missed and ended up eating in the car. Get your gas here and all the food you need to keep you fueled! read more

Awesome spot- tried the bbq and breakfast sandwiches, they were fresh and simple- great quick AM bite. Friendly and efficient service. Enjoyed our food on the adjoining "Porch" where you can pick up a great boba/ coffee. Even in early August it was somehow comfortable and breezy! This is the real thing. You need not serve barbecue on antique china. Don't go to any trouble to serve it with sterling silver flatware on a starched linen tablecloth. On an iron table under a roof works. Yards off the road works. In sight of smokers, grills, and the woodpile . . . genuine. Delicious pulled pork. Mine with diablo sauce, hers with North Carolina vinegar sauce. Both made on premises. Sides made on premises, too. Particularly excellent baked beans. These folks take pride in what they serve. We were treated in a kind and friendly manner. If you are travelling on 55 to or from West Virginia, you just have to stop and try the barbecue. Given past reviews, we were really looking forward to trying the BBQ and making a great local discovery we could share with neighbors and friends. That was not to be. The owner/counter service couldn't have been more disinterested or rude. Be clear-- you have a limited outdoor eating area, and very poor selection. Plenty of signs promising all sorts of goodies. When we pulled up and didn't see smokers in use (or the smell you'd expect from recently used smokers)--that was a first clue. When we finally found an employee to talk to us in the general store, she seemed unsure of every question we asked and looked towards a woman we assume was the owner for answers. At no time were we greeted, asked what they could help us with, or any customer courtesy. We were made to feel invisible and intrusive. Asked when the meats were smoked (told that morning, doubtful); expressed dismay there wasn't more choice (just chopped pork sandwich, chicken, ribs listed on the board; no brisket or beef-- everything in a suspicious looking case wrapped in foil). We asked for the ribs, told they were sold out (it was noon!). At this point we weren't feeling the love, and decided to leave to eat elsewhere. In a last-ditch effort I asked the older woman/owner? what were best days/times to return for better selection... I was rudely ignored. Now I know one local place I won't be patronizing-- neither for BBQ, convenience items OR gas. 8/26/21: I appreciate the owner feedback about extenuating circumstances. It's often hard to remember that in these times everyone is struggling with hiring and keeping good staff, and to provide decent customer service.
