I do enjoy Guru Lukshmi, but honestly, it's such a production to just be able to sit down and eat…read more Even if you've made reservations, you still end up sitting at some vacant, former eatery next door in order to wait for a table. Service is kind there, but then the owner - or whomever - smiles, looks at you, then looks at the door as soon as you've taken your last bite. Needless to say, it's not an entirely pleasant experience. In comes Yarl Dosa/Yarl Dosa Corner/Dosa Corner to the rescue! I believe it's just called Yarl Dosa 'cause that's what their signage/menus say. The atmosphere at Yarl Dosa is probably the direct opposite of Guru. It's located along a strip of Kennedy S, in Brampton, where every other unit is some kinda South Indian or Caribbean eatery. Due to the dim lighting, the place appears to be closed, but it's not. No chandeliers to speak of. And there are no crowds waiting for a table. It was actually quite dead on a Wednesday evening. Lucky for me, I ended up going with friends who are from Sri Lanka, so they were able to order stuff off the menu and explain to me what certain things were. Menu are words only, some descriptions. I ordered the Ghee Paper Masala Dosa which my friend requesting extra ghee for me. Dunno why, but I think they thought that I'd like it. It was a bit too greasy for me, not to the fault of the cooks, so I think I'd skip this next time. Spicy potato was underneath the actual dosa. Chutneys were lovely, especially the spicy one! Other standouts include Daal Curry (usually I'm not a fan of daal), Mutton Chukka (off-menu), Paranthas (nice 'n flaky), dosas...sans the extra ghee, & freshly made Masala Tea (a bit too sugary as a regular order). ;) Next time you're in Brampton, do yourself a favour, and check this place out!

If you're looking for a bloody amazing Kathiyawadi food, this is the place to be. We went there a…read morecouple of times when we were in Toronto and now this is the first place that occurs when we are visiting Toronto. Their Thali is a must try. It has two curries, rice/khichdi, dal/kadhi, farsaan, a sweet and roti/rotla. I love their "Olo" (roasted eggplant). And if you have rotla (Millet flat bread) with it, nothing better can exist. The other snacks are also worth trying. The seating space limited as most of their orders seems to be takeaways. The service is decently quick. Even if it is slow, the food is definitely worth the wait. There's plenty of parking outside and it's not crowded ever from what I've witnessed. There's an Indian grocery store one shop away from it, so it's a great place to combine your Indian grocery trip and lunch.

There are very few authentic Gujarati restaurants in the GTA. Most of the restaurants where you eat…read moreIndian food comes from the Northern/Punjab region of India. Lately we have a trend of South Indian/Sri Lankan restaurants and foods. All the above are good, but unique is the Gujarati food which comes from the Gujarat state/province of India. At this location there used to be a Gujarati buffet which closed down and this Shriji has opened a few years ago. Finally made the trip to this place. The thali consists of 2 vegetable dishes out of the four available, a daal/lentil or a kadhi (spiced yogurt soupy dish) and either rice or Khichdi (a mushed rice and green mung connotation). We took one tendli/tindora/ivy gourd curry with potatoes and a Oondhiyoo (a variety mixed Vegetables with a chickpea flour stuffed with fenugreek/methi and spices dumpling) and the daal and rice. The thali also comes 3 chappatis which are unique in the sense they are flat bread made on tawa/griddle. The chappatis are supposed to be paper thin and when cooked properly fluff. The tendli and potatoes were spiced to perfection, the potatoes slightly over cooked, but great. The Oondhiyoo (if translated means upside down) was great and had tons of veggies but very few dumplings/moothiya very few. Spiced correctly. All Gujarati dishes have a slight sweet taste as well because the guud/jaggery/hard raw rock brown sugar. The only downside on the dishes were that they were too oily/greasy. Would prefer if they cooked with less oil. Asked for fried green chillies in the side, but they turned out to not spicy at all (not their fault, natures, BTW). The chappatis were 10/10. Perfectly cooked, paper thin and had the customary two layers (proof that they puffed). Could have those 365 days! For those who haven't tried these highly recommend to try. The Indian naans are traditionally not cooked in every households, but chappatis are, but the Gujarati chappatis are the best and here they reflected the true chappatis. We also ordered 4 Bajara Rotlas - Pearl Millet thick chappatis made again on a griddle. They sold by pairs (2/$2). They were amazing as well. For those who love ancient grains, these are a MUST TRY. A perfect place for take out, although sit is not bad. No table service. The self serve area was clean. Hindi songs in the background. Typical. Also want to try Jowar Rotlas next time. Sorghum thick chappatis. Another ancient grain if you haven't tried Gujarati style.
