I recently moved to Queens and switched my YMCA from Prospect Park to Flushing. This Y is a major downgrade from the Prospect Park location in so many ways. most importantly the staff. I went to the small pool to do water aerobics. I have a mini tripod that attach to my phone and I watch a YouTube video of water aerobics and follow along. I have done this at at lease 3 different gyms, and SEVERAL times at the Prospect Park YMCA with absolutely no issues whatsoever. As soon as I walk in, although there are many swimmers in the pool, the white lifeguard immediately notices me. She is across the room and starts YELLING at me. "There's no phones allowed in the pool That's the Y's policy!" I say "what policy? I didn't have any issues with the Prospect Park Y." She then yells back, "Well this ain't Prospect Park." Then I ask her what the issue is and she ANGRILY yells, "We're not going to be responsible if you mess up your phone." I reply that I wasn't expecting them to be responsible if I damage my phone and that I'll pit it further away from the water. She waves me off. Then she yells to one of the swimmers that inquired about what was going on "Phones aren't allowed! She's on her phone!' I yell, "Well get the manager if it's a problem." She taps the walkie talkie on her hip and cockily replies "Oh, he's coming!" The manager comes in and says "We can't have phones in the pool, it's against our policy." Then escorts me out of the pool. I was humiliated!!! After I got dressed, I asked him to show me where this policy is written. He could not. All he could say was "It's against our policy to have phones in the pool area and the locker rooms" and gave me his manager's card to contact. After contacting his manager, she explained that their policy is that phones aren't allowed in the locker room nor the pool to protect the member's privacy. In my opinion, this could've been handled MUCH better and it would've been if she didn't immediately see me as a Nefarious Negro up to no good. All the life guard needed to do was ask me what I was doing with the phone. Instead she immediately started yelling and got aggressively defensive. Should I have matched her energy, I would've been labeled the angry black woman, the aggressor and I would've probably been banned from the Y. This was an egregious micro aggression that left me extremely embarrassed and made me feel unsafe. I was escorted out like I was some shady black criminal that should've never had access to that space in the first place. To add to this, the gym is filthy. The pool area had crud on it, the locker rooms were also disgusting. It's also very old with the exception of the cardio room that was recently renovated. Parking is also horrible. If you are black, I would avoid this YMCA at all costs. Not only does the staff not know how to communicate policies properly, and it's clear that they themselves are unclear about the policy, but they come off as RACISTS. This location also has very few black members which could be why the lifeguard was so startled that a Negro was in the midst.

They have multiple courts for badminton as well as ping pong. It's set in a large warehouse and is only a few blocks away from the main square. They also have a shop for rackets and clothing apparel as well as a stringing service. They are also one of the few places I've gone to with heating however it can get too hot sometimes on the courts. I've never gone during peak times but there hasn't been a time where I had to wait to get onto a court.

I found Fitness Badminton online and liked the title so I contacted the person to get more information. The website had different information than other places with their listing, and I know the internet may not have the most current info when the business does not have their own facility. Ths price is still current at $10/person. This is also the only place that lists loaner rackets available, but unfortunately they now do rentals. However, I gave Kenneth a call to explain I am from out of town so I do not have anything with me and will be coming with a few friends to play, and he generously offered to loan my friends and me rackets for the night! (I contacted one other place and looked up 4 other places and no other facility seemed to have the same generosity or personal touch, which is why I decided to go here.) Fitness Badminton is located inside one of Midwood High School's gym. They used to be located at a different school's gym, which is where we ended up because we used Google Maps to get there. So, be sure to type in the address from the website or make sure Google Maps has the current address. Although the host is friendly and generous, the courts is what made this place lose a star. There are no badminton lines on the courts!! The lines are taped on using masking tape. It appears as though this is done each time the courts are used for badminton. There are only three nets, which are not for badminton either, so the birdies get stuck in them. Needless to say there are not poles for the nets so the court we played on had a wooden stick holding the net up the right height. The floor was quite slippery, so it wasn't easy to play competitive games without risking injury. The drinking fountain in the gym doesn't work, so be sure to bring your own bottled water. There are vending machines in the basement of the school if you forget though. Regulars bring their own water, new and used feather birdies, and rackets. I would come back here if I am not playing competitively or if I'm in in area though. :)

Even though we rented the court prior to the appointment. He called us disrespectful for asking him to get off of OUR reserved court. Keep in note he was a grown man trying to start beef with a 14 year old boy. I don't know how to react to this but I was very uncomfortable in this situation because of all the yelling and screaming he was doing to me. He was a grown man trying to prove his point of us being disrespectful even though he was the one yelling. Thank you for understanding and I hope none of this happens to any of you guys reading this. I just wanted to make my point clear that to that guy who yelled at me and my friend today that he was overreacting and that he should never do that to such a young kid ever again. We simply asked him to get off the court but said that it was his court even though we rented prior. He went on to say I'm going to talk to your mother and started cursing us out. The manager even had to get involved. Think about it how could you do such things to a teenager? They grown men talking so much about the court, even though it wasn't his cause we rented the court prior. It made a really cute little keepsake at the end. And-- he LOVED going to the park at lunch time with the group. I didn't give it 5 stars, because this was our first time with "Engineering for Kids", so we don't have too much experience with the programs, but I would definitely go back.
