I didn't even realize I was having migraines but I tried one of the medicine she recommended and I feel 1,000 times better on the days I take it. Also a side note she was one of the very few doctors to actually wear a mask which I really appreciated. read more

I had a great experience with the neurologist and was so happy to have found her. Now, out of nowhere, this center has stopped carrying my company-provided, private insurance. They sent me a blank email with just an attached pdf to tell me. I worked incredibly hard to not have a gap in my care when I moved cities because my symptoms are too severe to risk it. Now I will have a gap in my medical care that is entirely unplanned and out of my control. This will have intense impacts on many areas of my life. This is uncaring, cold, unprofessional, and driven entirely by greed. read more

Romee Patel has the most passive aggressive patronizing poor bedside manner. Astonished, given that this place seems to have such positive reviews and other people seem to have had positive experiences. She talks to you as if you are an imbecile and would not understand information, and she talks at a level that is borderline too loud when a patient is having the most debilitative 32+ hour migraine. She lacks genuine empathy, and the entire office seems to hate their jobs. Would have brought up the concern of bedside manner, but by everyone's demeanor, it did not seem like that is something they value. Being a successful physician is more than knowing your books; it also asks of you to be a feeling human being, and she is an entitled robot that treats patients as if it's all just a trial and error game. Don't talk down to people, and try to learn to become a nice person, although maybe it's too late for her. Also side note: She gave an IV injection and did it incorrectly so now the nerve is affected. She has no idea what she's doing. read more

I wrote this review a while back so it's time for an update. There have been some changes at the front office, so the people don't seem as rude as before. Regarding treatment: I gave up looking to be "cured" and only hope to "manage" my headaches. Linda is my go to person, I have not tried anyone else. She is one of the founding members in the group. Dr. Crystal is the only one I tried who is still at the practice, she is knowledgeable but my issue with her was that she didn't not appreciate how the pain was affecting my life at the time. Dr. Mauskop does not take insurance. Truth be told, I have not found another place that addresses headaches and offers Botox, which for me significantly lowered the frequency and the intensity of the pain. read more

If you are fat, be weary of going to the New York Headache Center. I was explicitly told that they were prescribing me a specific migraine medicine because it has secondary benefits causing loss of appetite. I did not express any desire to want to lose wait, and in fact clearly stated that I am in recovery for my eating disorder. To say that I was upset by my visit is an understatement as it could have easily set me into a relapse and honestly almost did. I will not be returning here and do not suggest anyone that is fat and/or Black do so. read more

My only complaint; and is a huge complaint is how long it took to get an appointment and how non-understanding the receptionists were in this process. Clearly, they have never experienced a migraine. I had a migraine for over 6 months, had been to several doctors of which did not help me, was on preventive medication that severely effected my short term memory, sleeping, etc. This did not matter at all to the girl scheduling my appt. I waited a long two months more of suffering from DAILY migraines that left me absolutely disabled often. After my visit today, I was given some injections in my head and shoulder and am feeling some pain relief!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am FURIOUS that I had to literally suffer that much longer for a treatment that took 10 minutes. I am hoping this truly cures this migraine and the new medication will work because getting an appt. here is a nightmare. If you can get an appointment and see the doctor, the medical attention is reasonable and effective. The staff and operations rely heavily on automated systems, even during working hours when you are often routed to a machine before actually getting a real person. The office also uses an automated system to confirm appointments. In the case that the automated confirmation system fails (yes, technology doesn't always work as it should!), be ready to face a $50 penalty fee. And don't expect any allowances on their part, just be prepared to deal with an obstinant staff who cares more about making money than accomodating patients! read more

This place saved my life. Lynda has the hands and skills of a magical creature, dispensing botox properly to the most afflicted areas. We work together to make me feel better. This is a good thing. She listens and remembers where every bit of pain has been. And have you seen her CV? The woman is constantly training and re-educating herself. I trust her. The only negative to the office is the reception desk. Most of the people working there do not seem to have it together. I have been told incorrect billing amounts, etc. Sometimes just saying my name brings on a stupor. It is a shame that they bring the place down. read more

If you have migraines like me, or perhaps if you're some kind of... migraine... enthusiast? This is the place to go. Dr. Mauskop is thorough, not in the creepy Big Lebowski "he's a good man, and THOROUGH," way, but in the "whoa, this guy is actually listening to me and then rattling off my 500 previously unknown headache treatment options" way. I have had migraines for 25 years now (whoa) and I can honestly say this was the first time in my history as headache girl that I felt like I might not actually NEED to have 4 migraines a week "just because." I've been going here since January 2009 and have switched over to Linda Krasenbaum, their nurse practitioner, since my insurance covers visits to her but not Dr. Mauskop's hefty $600-per-visit fee. Linda is great. I literally could not be happier with her. She's friendly and warm and completely puts you at ease (or, as "at ease" as you can be when she's got a needle full of Botox jammed into your scalp). She LISTENS to you and she's always ready with options and solutions. Under the care of the NY Headache Center, I have gone from having 4-5 migraines a week to maybe 1 a week in just a few months. My review used to say that the insurance desk was, at times, surly and overwhelmed - but after coming here for 4 years (and going to other doctors around the city for other reasons) I have completely changed my opinion to "these people can have a kidney of mine if they want one," because anyone who can negotiate the Draconian policies of Anthem Blue Cross and get my Botox there on time while sounding nice on the phone is basically some kind of martyr who deserves frequent parades and gift baskets. And seriously, it's nice to go to a doctor's office where they get to know you (ok maybe that sucks because it means you have some kind of crazy illness but still) and treat you like you're pals even though you know they're dealing with whiny headache people all day. read more

"A Super Doctor and a caring person" ! For 40 years of my life I lived misdiagnosed as a Migraine sufferer since Migraine was told to be a 'woman's disease' till I met my angel of the day. I arrived to Dr. Mauskop's office with a headache as I had them almost very day since I was 13 years old. After I filled out a questioner that I though no one would read carefully I was called in. Hi, I am Dr. Mauskop. I have good news and bad news story. Well I wanted to here the good one. Dr. said: ' your parents loved you a lot But the bad news is they left you with Migraine headache. So how do you want to get rid of the pain. I am thinking right! ? then he went on saying there are two ways one a pill that takes 20 minutes and then there is a self injection that takes 5 minutes. Are you afraid of needles ,he asked. I am ready for anything I said. and then we went on to give me samples of the medicine till I feel better faster. and the rest is history. I am 52 years old now and I feel I have lived only for 12 since the medication Imitrex has saved my life thanks to super doctor Mr. Mauskop. Yes! Men suffer from Migraines too. They need a better system for checking in "walk in, actively suffering" Migraine patients. I had a cab take me from Brooklyn & I was sick 3X in that car. So true, during my level 8/10 migraine, I started crying when the receptionist asked me to fill a 9 page history form! I just couldn't (:(. Ms. Romee Patel, Nurse Practitioner, I give a rating of 5! She was soft spoken, gentle in approach but determined to make you better. After an injection of magnesium & migraine med, half hour later my migraine was now a level 5. The place is well kept but I sense tension from the receptionist staff due to their crowded work space. I have been a patient of the NY Headache Center for over 10 years. While I never was thrilled at most of the doctor's bedside manner (quick, didn't seem to care too much, a good amount of turnover, etc) I couldn't have been happier with Lynda. Unfortunately, she left a while ago and it's never been the same. A LOT of turn over with both the drs and the front desk staff. The front desk staff, in my opinion, has worse communication skills and lack of friendliness than the drs. it's generally just an unwelcoming place- it's cold. I actually was told that they now want a virtual appointment BEFORE the botox appt to make the botox appt quicker so not to talk. HUH? But the breaking point for me, at this point, is waiting for Nancy to call me back for over 2 weeks no matter how many times I call to connect. She works on the insurance side of things for NY headache center & when my insurance changed & I needed assistance she was particularly rude, unhelpful and truly uncaring. As patients, we go here b/c we are in pain. We would do anything to make the pain go away, right? The lack of compassion is upsetting and appalling. I don't want to go thru the paces of finding a new dr...but now I feel I have no choice. read more

My life has changed significantly since I started coming here two years ago. I've gone from living with daily migraines to being able to manage them with the help of Romee and have a much improved quality of life. Dr Mauskop is by far the best Neurologist I've seen and being a cluster headache suffer I've seen a lot. I've been going to his office since 2001. When I call to get an appointment they always fit me in as soon as possible and even the same day. Dr Mauskop answers all my questions I never feel rushed, he responds promptly and personally to emails. By the time I found Dr Mauskop, I was desperately seeking relief from an unrelenting migraine. Dr Mauskop was able to see me right away and under his care my I felt better within a week. UPDATE: Shortly after my less-than-ideal experience, I wrote a letter to Dr. Mauskop himself, expressing my disappointment at what had happened. To his extreme credit, he wrote back within 15 minutes, and offered to get me in the very next day. I accepted his appointment, and came out with a list of things to try, which I'm happy to report are working. The only downside is that he himself does not accept insurance (others in the practice do), and it was a hefty blow to my wallet, but I'm cautiously optimistic that I will get at least a bit of it reimbursed. But overall, I was very pleased with the visit, and very impressed that Dr. Mauskop took the time and effort to respond and right the wrong which had occurred. read more

Go there! I have been to 3 other Neurologists for migraines before coming here. Finally, I had light shed on this debilitating neurological disease. Dr. Yellin of the NY Headache Center took the time to answer all of my questions, think things through with me and put me on a treatment plan with a goal to get off medicine. I left there with hope, a real treatment plan, goals- already headache free, a month without a migraine. Bravo to Dr.s to take the time to explain and work with their patients. BUT Please DO NOT go to the Headache Institute on West 59th Street Dr. Cohen, he made me feel hopeless. Rude, obnoxious inconsiderate robot. Never answered a question and didnt even let me explain what led up to the constant headaches. He just prescribed medicine and shoo'ed me out. They don't come better than Dr Mauskop. His professional experience and knowledge base from the cutting edge in research to holistic approaches is breathtaking. He's a superb physician. He's patient, listens and truly cares about his patients. If you have problem headaches he's your best chance of getting relief and being treated kindly too. He makes himself available to patients. Although he's highly specialized he hasn't forgotten basic neurology or medicine. This is ideal if you have other things going on he can integrate your treatment. His goal is to relieve pain and will try anything that won't harm you. It took a while to get it right from f me but he stuck In trying to relieve pain. He did. I don't think I could live with the pain of the migraines. I not only got back a life I get greeted with a smile. read more

The name of the center is a bit misleading. They really should call themselves the Migraine Center, as I perceived them to be particularly focused only on migraines. My particular situation was not that, and I didn't really get the help or insights I was hoping for. Because the doctor doesn't take insurance, I chose to see a nurse practitioner, figuring, well, it's a headache center -- surely this nurse practitioner will be well-versed in all things headache, but she seemed very inexperienced actually. She was very nice and really took the time to chat with me (and she also made a point of consulting with doctor), but ultimately, I received a generic printed handout that seemed obviously tailored for migraine sufferers and had absolutely nothing to do with me. Unfortunately, this center did not seem equipped to help me, and I had to seek advice elsewhere. read more

Mr. Mauskop doesn't take insurance, so I saw Lynda Krasenbaum at his practice instead. She's friendly and perky enough, but LAZY AS HELL. She never once in YEARS suggested a preventative protocol, and never ever explained rebound headaches or warned me about overuse of Triptans. I've been coming here for a few years. My migraines have not improved in any significant way. I did like the bedside manner of my doctor, but the front desk staff is horrible. Recently, they refused to give me any medication refills to tide me over until I can get into see my doctor (The dr booked until next month - she only comes in once a week). I was in the middle of a terrible migraine and the front desk secretary just flat out refused to even give me one or two pills or to speak to a doctor on my behalf. Clearly, she doesn't understand what a migraine is like. Not to mention -- on two different occasions, I booked an appointment, they sent me a confirmation voicemail, I confirmed the appointments -- only to show up and the front desk staff tell me that my dr. was not in that day and that she never came in on that day of the week. The only other doctors available did not take my insurance and would cost something like $700 to see. I had taken the afternoon off of work both times to see the doctor. It was a total waste of time. I'm so over this place. I'll never be going back. read more

Dr. Mauskop and his staff are excellent. I came to Dr. Mauskop after developing Chronic Migraine. Dr. Mauskop is well known in our family, as he also treated my brother's Migraines (Migraine tends to be genetic). At Dr. Mauskop's office, all doctors and NPs have always treated me with kindness, empathy, compassion. The staff really listen to the patients and validate to all of their concerns and symptoms. It is my experience that this trait can be a rarity in the medical profession, as sometimes, migraine patients are not believed due to the stigmatization of the disease. When the patient is feeling hopeless, Dr. Mauskop will always remind you that there are treatments to try and not give up hope, as Migraine can be tricky to treat. Dr. Mauskop thinks outside the box with treatments, a great quality because Migraine often requires the physician to do so. Developing Chronic Migraine was debilitating at first, but after some time and treatment, I am way more functional than I was. I cannot say enough good things about the front staff office; they are truly advocates for all patients and they have helped me to obtain necessary medicines in order to treat my condition. There is often red tape in accessing medication through insurance companies, and the staff will ALWAYS contact insurance or the pharmacy in a timely manner to make sure that the patient is able to access their medications. Unbelievable!! I have very strong headaches and pressure on the skull 24/7. After going from one neurologist to another, to pain management doctors to headache specialists, I've seen them all. MRI, lumbar spine puncture, occipital nerve block, cervical plexus block and none of them helped and all the tests were fine, no anomalies. My final hope was to see Dr. Mauskop. He asked me to do a few blood tests. He told me that I had a deficit in B12 and would need a shot every other week. I pass by his office to receive the shot, he started asking me questions about my headaches which I politely answered. Suddenly he told me that he would charge me for a regular visit because I was asking him to many questions. He stodd up, opened his office door to make me leave and said:"Time is money". I was amazed by his attitude. I sent my blood tests to my doctor and to my gynecologist who both of them told me that I had no deficit at all. Those New Yorkers and especially the upper east side one only care about the amount of money they are doing. Medicine is not a vocation to Dr. Mauskop and he is not dedicated to help the one in need. read more

Before I came to the NY Headache Center I saw a few doctors regarding the very painful headaches I was having. The doctors could not figure out how to cure my headaches and sent me to different specialists and tests. When I finally met with the NY Headache Center's Dr. Shkolnik he listened to my complaints, asked questions and said that I have the very definition of cluster headaches. He gave me medication which stopped my cluster headaches immediately. This was a very big relief to finally not have such painful headaches after having them for 3 months. I have been taking my daughter to the NY Headache Center for approximately one year. I was referred to the Headache Center by Family and Friends (who are physicians) and I am so glad that I listened. My daughter (age 17) who had spent a week in the hospital due to a 14 day cluster migraine was lucky to be placed under the care of Timothy Oakes, NP. His compassion and bedside manner were/are fantastic. My daughter was at the point where she felt she was going to be living with headaches for the rest of her life on a daily basis. This added stress did not help the headaches. Timothy Oakes recommended a regimen of natural vitamins along with various as needed (prn) medications. A complete family history and my daughter's medical history helped guide his plan of action. This summer my other daughter (age 15) started suffering from migraines as well. Timothy started a different plan of action that fit her needs better. The girls have a local neurologist and he is very pleased with the care they are receiving at the NY Headache Center. Their appointments locally have almost become non-existent. Believe me there are days when they still do not feel well but they are far and few between compared to when they started. Being a migraine sufferer myself for over 30 years I can tell you that you will most likely never be 100% migraine/headache free. I have personally never had an issue with the office staff as other reviewers complained about. It has always been a pleasant experience and I never have a problem getting an appointment or speaking with Timothy. BTW - Migralex has proven to be a great first line of defense and most headache/migraine days they do not need to take the prescription medication. My reasoning for not giving five stars is only due to the fact that I have to schlep into Manhattan and take the girls out of school a bit earlier the days of their appointments. read more

If you have headaches, either become a regular patient of this office, visit for a consultation to update your plan of treatment with your local doctor, or read Dr. Mauskop's website to help yourself get better treatment . Your headaches will always be taken seriously at the New York Headache Center and the administrative staff will use its comprehensive knowledge of the insurance system to get you coverage, if at all possible. I went from daily headaches to as few as two headaches per month. I went from "pain patient" to "real person." Dr. Mauskop often says there is always something else to try. Dr. Mauskop and the medical staff are always up-to-date with the latest developments in both the medical and wholistic arenas, including pharmaceuticals, exercise, acupuncture, vitamins and minerals, electronic devices, sleep, caffeine, physical therapy - they will never give up on you. You have the option of seeing Dr. Mauskop or, if you need a provider that takes your insurance, seeing one one of the other excellent providers in the office. If your insurance doesn't cover a visit here and you can't afford regular visits, consider paying for a single consultation where you can have your current approach reviewed and updated; I know several migraine sufferers who are using medicines and therapies that were abandoned thirty years ago, and this office can easily bring you into the twenty-first century. Don't hesitate to see a nurse practitioner or a doctor other than Dr. Mauskop; the entire medical staff is fully trained and they have easy access to Dr. Mauskop on the rare occasions when they don't know the answer to your question. Re: the front office. The key to working with the front office is to realize that they are seriously focused on efficiently handling the administrative aspects of your visit. If you don't get the answer you need, I recommend asking if they can think of any alternative routes for getting what you need. For example, if you are in too much pain to wait for an appointment--which I have found in recent years is rarely necessary--ask to leave a message for the provider, saying that you feel you are in too much pain to wait, and they will try to find a quicker option for you. If, like many migraine sufferers, you are in too much pain to handle certain administrative issues, tell the front desk that the pain is preventing you from handling these obstacles and ask them if they can think of any way to help. read more

Dr Mauskop changed my life. I was suffering from Cluster Headaches and it was running my life. I couldn't go out at night for months at a time. This was going on for 12 years until i met Dr Mauskop. I went to Dr. Mauskop complaining of headaches accompanied by shaking and blurred vision. He cut me off before I was finished explaining my symptoms, and continued to ask me about my drinking habits, despite the fact that I said I was a casual drinker. I told him I had been symptomatic for the last 1.5 years. He never ordered an MRI, but instead ordered blood work and started me on a regimen of vitamins. Two months later, a neuro-ophthalmologist discovered that I had a benign brain tumor, and that was the cause of all my symptoms. I had surgery 4 days later. Had I not had surgery immediately, my severe hydrocephalus caused by the tumor could have been life threatening. Had I not found a better doctor who listened to my symptoms, and didn't try to push his/her own migraine relief products on me, I could have died. By far, the worst and potentially life threatening doctor I have ever been to, and the worst $600 (yes, $600) I have ever spent. read more
