Bought 2 very expensive bottles ( and by expensive i mean it ) really trying to celebrate a major date in our relationship. Once we opened there was no bubbles. We tried anyways. Didn't taste right. Basically a dessert wine. Extremely sweet and almost pure sherry. Anyways , as we don't claim to be experts we message friends that work in the field. "It's not good". We contact the provider ( minibar and the store ) and their answer was even worse than the bottle: it's old, it's Normal to not have bubbles - also put a raisin in it and it will solve the issue. Are you kidding me? I wasn't even looking for a refund - an exchange even of smaller value would be fine, but then - I only looked at Yelp later , it became clear : they have zero idea of customer service specially if you are not in the store. So be warned: overpriced ( I was ok as I needed that specific bottle ) and the worst customer service. Can't wait to ask for a bottle at a good restaurant and the sommelier tell me he or she is bringing the raisin to make it sparklingly again. Avoid at all costs. read more

My husband and I live pretty close to this store and we are so glad we do. Their selections of wine is pretty good but most importantly the staff is very warm, welcoming and helpful. We know that if we don't know what wine direction we are looking to go in, someone will always be there to help us choose the right one. The great thing is that they also deliver--which for some odd reason we haven't utilized yet, but I see the delivery people in my building all the time and I think that's a pretty awesome perk to shopping here. Among the many reasons to stop in here are wine tastings before noon and the provision of my favorite Sicilian red, Valle D'Acate Il Frappato (the latter most likely due to my special-ordering a case of it in 2006). After you and your buddies go take pictures next to the charging bull's balls -- yes, I know you're doing it -- you'll want to grab a drink from the idiocy you just pulled in trying to lick them -- again, I know you're doing it. New York Wine Exchange is a place to get that drink and more. Hundreds of wine bottles, fine liquors, and even a couple of random trinkets a long the way. The staff is super knowledgeable, friendly and didn't kick out me and my other young looking, but actually 21 (I look 12...people say I will like that...someday) friends as we perused their vodkas. Mmm gotta love Belvedere at 11am in the morning. I'll reserve my consistent alcoholism for when I start my job and work 100 hours a week. After my interaction with the New York Wine Exchange today, I would caution anyone against doing business with them, at least online. I placed an order through their website over two weeks ago, and as I had yet to receive any kind of order confirmation or indeed any communication from them of any kind, I called today to check the status of my order. When I made my inquiry I was told, rather dismissively, that if I hadn't received the wine yet it was because it was out of stock. The conversant was about to hang up right then and there, but I stopped him to press for more (annoying?) information such as "What about my payment?" and "Do you have anything similar in stock?" The exasperation continued, and though he had yet to pull up my order on his system he assured me that I had not been charged and that he had nothing similar to offer. The entire interaction came off as unnecessarily rude, unhelpful and frankly a bit shady. I have alerted PayPal, and am busy confirming that the payment was never consummated. I can be an excellent wine customer, and I've never experienced this level of incompetence or rudeness before in 20+ years of buying wine. Buyer beware. read more

TL; DR: Unless NYWE is my only option, I don't foresee using them again, and do not recommend them for delivery service. Perhaps I would stop in if walking by. Though a bitter first taste does not leave me caring to dig in for more. I tried NYWE because: - I wanted to see what their inventory has to offer that my usual purveyor does not - I wanted to see how their customer service and turnaround time compares to my usual purveyor - Since they're 1/3 the distance from my office as said usual purveyor, I figured it would be kinder to give my usual delivery guy a break in this extreme heat Perhaps my experience would have been better had I order through them directly. Either way, once the two-hour delivery window has closed, I called Minibar. NYWE said they had an internet issue earlier in the morning and were backlogged, which was causing 30+ minute delays for delivery. No problem, and understandable. Howsomever, they never contacted Minibar to inform them, which does not speak well for their online customer service (would I have placed the order through Delivery or Seamless, I could shrug it off easily. When working through a specialized Concierge service? One expects a business to raise to that level). To their credit, the order did arrive 30 minutes past the window, and the delivery man was patient while I checked the receipt to ensure correct pricing and proper tip. However, it looked like the NYWE sent him out with a receipt that didn't show my request to call me directly, rather than the company main number listed on the account (since this was a personal order, rather than one of the orders I place for the company). So the guy called the main company number for my personal hootch delivery (semi-awkward), and I had to guess as to which building entrance to meet him. First world ish....but none of which has ever happened with my go to peeps. Methinks I'll stick to my usual. read more

This is a super convenient, well stock liquor store directly across the street from the bronze bull at the fork of lower Broadway and Beaver St. My grandfather worked in this building in the 50's! I believe you can go onto www.nywinexchange.com, and order items to be delivered Over staffed and trailing when your just wanting to explore... I can handle buying booze! BUYER BEWARE: This store advertises a reasonable price but will charge the unwary customer 25% more at the store. Their explanation is that (1) their website is not working; when that is proved as false (2) their website is out of date; and then (3) their website is for delivery prices only which then have a $15.00 charge added on. Placed an order for a bottle of whiskey on their website. 2 weeks went by, no delivery, no update. Still showing up as a pending charge on my credit card. Called up and asked about the status of the order. Told "oh we don't have that in stock anymore". Well, how do we go about getting this off my credit card? "Just cancel the order". How do I do that? "Just cancel it" I can't cancel the order - there's no account login on the website, I just placed the order - you have to cancel it in your system. "ok thank you [click]". Really? Literally pulled out my iPhone and found this place just down the street from my building. We were getting ready to go to a Halloween costume party and needed some liquor courage to ready ourselves. I met, Paul, the manager or owner. I am almost 100 percent that was his name, but a lot happened that night, so I might be wrong. He had a grey pony tail. He was super pleasant and went out of his way to ask if I needed help. Then proceeded to help me and suggest a new wine (that I ended up getting even though I came for rum). Great prices and a wide selection of wine. The guy "Paul" was super knowledgeable and he also told me that they deliver in the Financial District for free! Super plus plus! The cashier was kind of slow, but she was nice and I think she was new and learning how to do everything on the computer. They put me in the system, so now if I ever order anything, they will have my information! I will be a happy returning customer. Only minus - they boast being Zagat rated everywhere! Don't you know? A decent wine spot in the financial district. The one word of advice I can give is to not go by their website. They flat out admit the website is rarely updated so if there's something on there you want, call and double-check that they actually have it. Their staff could be a bit more knowledgeable but they do have managers on hand that seem to know their wine pretty well. Prices are fair and the delivery minimum is only $25 (which isn't difficult to hit if you order more than one bottle of wine). There is also no delivery fee for a good chunk of FiDi. read more

Have purchased wine in store the past with no problem. Yes, they are overpriced, but hey it's Manhattan. Really disappointed tonight when we called in for a delivery and they didn't have ANY of the Pinot Noirs that we wanted or were familiar with. Instead the manager/owner recommended something we weren't familiar with, but promised it tasted like a Paul Hobbs. When the wine arrived it tasted like an acidic $5 grocery crap wine, and not like the $50 Paul Hobbs he had promised. Worse was that he didn't tell us the maker was from Santa Barbara! Ugh. Will never go back here. Ordered local delivery. There is a very affordable wine they offer in-store but every time I call for delivery they say they don't have it, to up charge me on something else. I've been searching forever for this wine I had in Hell's Kitchen last January and sadly, I didn't find it here. What I did find was good advice stemming from a few simple questions about why I liked that wine so much... I forget his name, but he was an Indian man with a white beard and he helped me find exactly what I wanted: a nice full bodied Malbec to take to dinner. Such a nice selection! I was surprised by how well laid out this place is, and the staff was everywhere through the store checking if I needed help and answering my questions. We definitely won't return to this store anymore. Twice, we ordered a bottle over the phone and asked for a specific price range. The first time we had a more expensive bottle than asked for delivered and just merely accepted it. The second time, we went to pick it up at the store. Since my boyfriend had ordered and given a strict price range to the person (pony tailed guy) over the phone I didn't think twice to check the price of the bottle he had given to replace the one that was supposedly not available. When I arrived home, we realized that he had given us a bottle $4 more than requested. Out of principal, I went back to the store (even though that was the last thing I wanted to do after a long day at work) to exchange it. They did exchange it, but I felt they weren't particularly helpful in finding me a bottle within our price range. In addition, when calling in for delivery one day we were told that they had closed and could not deliver anymore even though my boyfriend overheard the other sales person taking another order for delivery. Also, when calling in regarding the issue of the overpriced bottle we were told that 1) the guy with the pony tail stepped out, but would be back in 5-10 minutes, while when we called 5-10 minutes later we were told he left for the day. Then, when I actually went to the store to exchange the bottle he was there and 2) We were told that the store was closing at 7:30 p.m. (I called at 7:33 p.m.) and if I could come by tomorrow. When I mentioned that I wanted to drink the bottle this evening, they said it was fine and when I arrived at NY Wine Exchange the opening hours for that evening showed as 8:30 p.m. on the door. Obviously, they have an issue with integrity and telling the truth to their customers. We will definitely not be returning to NY Wine Exchange anymore even though it is close by and more convenient, but will go back to Chambers Street Wines where service is excellent even though this means having to commute there. read more
