I can not say enough good things about this place! The staff will always steer you in the direction of what you will like...not what is expensive. Plus they have a wide variety of both wines and spirits, both top of the line fancy and also lower price range but still tastes great stuff. The price range is better than everywhere in the neighborhood, and still beats some of the discount stores in the city! In a hurry and wanting to do as little thinking as possible, I took advantage of the store displays: wines sit on tables helpfully separated by price and type, index cards listing details that'd make a camel take notice. If you have time, peruse the store. It's bright and clean and only takes a hot minute. Kudos to California Wine for being open in the evening and for the cheery service. This place is actually pretty awesome. I'm from cali, so its nice to see a broad selection of Napa and Sonoma wines. Their prices are reasonable, and the location is clean and very convenient if you work or live in FiDi. They have a nice space, and they host free wine tastings on Thursdays (I think at 5pm?). They also do private events and wine tastings - I looked into doing a client party there for work, but we needed a larger space. read more

I ran in here in a furious hurry, anxious for a bottle of good white wine to take to a friend's house for dinner. The staff figured out what I wanted quickly (mineral, stone, calcium, not oak, in case anyone wants to send me a case of white wine) and got me an excellent French white which turned out to have exactly the flavor profile I wanted. This place may look like the type of high end place you avoid because there are cobwebs in your wallet. Don't! I work down in the area and discovered it walking to the train one day. They had a wine tasting so I went in. Taylor and Jen were there and they welcomed as if I was coming into their home. We talked about the wine being tasted and about other wines and spirits, the neighborhood. Since that first day, I have come back on many occasions. I will travel into the city to buy wine or spirits from parties or friends than use the one down the block from my house. I was fortunate enough to attend a wine tasting hosted at Califiornia Wine Merchants. Right off the bat I was impressed that they offered to host the event free of charge - especially when other venues were charging a hefty fee - kudos to you, California Wine Merchants! Throughout the evening, we were treated to a tasting of 5 wines. The storeowner was extremely knowledgable in his craft and was eager to share his love of fine vino! The tasting was great; format was that of an informal mingle while the owner and his assistant walked around to refill empty glasses. My favorite of the evening was by far the Gewürztraminer! At the end of the evening, he offered a little discount for any of the wines we were particularly fond of. What an excellent way to pass a boring ol' hump day. I have been to dozens of wine stores and tastings. This store by far has the best quality of wines to taste with no pressure to buy. Will is very low key and very knowledgeable. Even though the majority of the wines are new world and from CA. hence the name he also carry's wines that have an old world style. It's a beautiful space, the staff is super helpful and the wine tastings were so much fun. My whole team left with bottles to take home. CWM is very cool as a wine shop and the people who run it are as well. The tastings are always fun and informative and there's a casual nature (not a wine snob scene) and accessible attitude about the place and the staff. The wines available are, as the name suggests, pretty much all California based and not necessarily the least expensive, but there are some cost-conscious price points as well. I usually end up getting something new and interesting there, even when I swear I'm just going to taste the wine and not buy. This store opened up just before the economy melted down and had they not been so nice there, I don't know how they would have made it through. But they did, which is a tribute to their hard work, good marketing skills, and customer-friendly nature. I recommend CWM as a good stop when you are down in the financial district and a good online reference as well. read more

While CWM mostly carries wines from California, don't be surprised to find other interesting wines from other great wine regions of the world. I am from So Cal and I find that the California wines available at most wine shops in NYC are what I consider "supermarket" wines which are usually the mass produced wines available at your local Vons. I found out about this fantastic neighborhood biz when they did a free tasting in my apartment building. They have been my go-to wine shop ever since. The staff is the biggest plus-- small, dedicated, knowledgeable, and unbelievably friendly. They treat everyone like old friends and NEVER make you feel like a moron for not knowing a muscat from a muscadet. The inventive wine labels use normal human vocabulary ("spicy" as opposed to "hints of leather"). The selection is boutique-y and California-focused, but they offer amazing bargains by focusing on small producers. Extra bonuses include PET FRIENDLY and FREE TASTINGS every Friday 5-7pm (also every Thursday in the summer). read more
