Had sides taken in on 6 dress shirts. Took them home and tried them on and realized they were off. The sides were not taken in equally and now the buttons do not line up. This causes bizarre creases in the shirts. The tailor acknowledged there was an issue and that he could fix it. Hen then asked where I had the shirts taken in. I told him he did them. He then sang a different tune and said that the dry cleaners had shrunk the shirts. I questioned why it was the case that one side shrunk and the other did not. He then told me he could not help me. What is all the hype about this place? I took a dress in for a simple alteration after 2 people recommended Newbury Tailors. Service was quick and efficient which I really appreciated, but my jaw nearly hit the ground when I learned that my alterations came to a total of $95. Now....I realize I should have asked for a ballpark on what the charges would be before leaving the dress, but I've had the same alterations done at other tailors and paid only $40-50. I get it, you're on Newbury and so you are entitled to rip me off, but over double what other tailors charge? Really?? After speaking with the owner, I was able to get the charges down to $70, so I give them credit for listening to the customer and making an adjustment, but even $70 was high for what I had done. I'll go elsewhere next time. read more

I brought in about 5 pairs of jeans to be hemmed, and I was very pleased with my experience and results. Total bill for 5 pairs of jeans was approximately $100 (might have been $120, it was a few months ago). I think this is reasonable for 5 pairs of quality denim, each were measured (as opposed to taking one measurement and applying the same to all the jeans...which have different fits). The atmosphere is lively, with fun Latin music playing, and all the staff were very friendly. Several of the local designer boutiques, such as Valentino, use NTC - a testament to their skill. I used to adore Newbury Tailoring. From about 2005-2008 they were amazing, always tailoring my designer jeans perfectly, reattaching original hems. They charged $20-25 (used to get a discount if you bought them at Jasmine Sola - RIP, Jasmine Sola). It was expensive, but worth it for the quality and convenience of the location. And the guy who runs the place (forget his name) was so nice and cordial and professional. Then sometime in the summer of 2008 things changed. I brought them 3 pairs of jeans and was told it would take 2 weeks. Which I think is frankly too long, so I talked them down to 7 days. But when I got them back, 2 of the 3 pairs were hemmed much too short, despite the fact I had brought my regular pair of boots and the jeans had been chalked up as usual. I was very unhappy. The service was also rude - I was told they would need another week to fix them. I found this a poor customer service model. When I got them back they were hemmed correctly. But by this point, I was out $60 and had to wait almost 3 weeks for 2 pairs of jeans and I feel I should have been offered some sort of discount for my wait time, given the fact that was their mess-up. I suspect they cannot keep up with the volume of clothes they receive and clearly whoever used to do the tailoring left and they are using less skilled people now. I am still in the process of seeking out a better local tailor in the Back Bay, suggestions welcome! read more

Newbury Tailoring is awesome! I've gotten more than five pairs of jeans all fixed here and picked them all up before the week was over. I also had a dress that needed to be shortened along with several sweaters. My dress came out perfect. My sweaters had custom print on the back and I was worried that they would interfere with it while tailoring, but luckily they fixed it and preserved everything! I was sooo happy when I came back to pick it up, they really do cater to your needs and the staff is very nice. Actually, the last time I was here, there was another woman that wasn't satisfied with her jeans that had gotten shortened and within the time I was there, Newbury Tailoring had fixed it with no charge! So I know if they ever did make a mistake, or even if you're just simply not happy with how it came out, they are more than willing to keep you happy - a quality very hard to find on Newbury St especially. Thank God for these guys, they are life-savers! I'm definitely spreading the good word about these folks! read more

I've brought numerous pairs of designer jeans to this place to have them hemmed because they keep the original hem. I recently brought in a pair of $340 jeans which are hemmed at two completely different lengths, awesome right? I've never had a problem with them in the past, or at least none that I've noticed. So, while I may be a complete noob to yelp, I felt the need to respond to Brendan D.'s negative review of Newbury Tailoring. As a loyal customer for over three years, I can attest to the wonderful customer service and work that they do. As far as pricing, I've never had a problem. Yes, it costs twenty dollars to hem pants. If you want to pay only twelve or fifteen dollars, then go somewhere else, get a shoddy job, and bring the pants back over to newbury to get them fixed. The best part is that if you really think that something is unfairly priced, Antonio is very reasonable and willing to adjust the price. The other reason I love Newbury Tailoring is that I know I can rely on them in a quick fix. Perfect example: I found the perfect pair of jeans from 344 through that $40 sale on a Wednesday, that I wanted to wear out on Friday. I just needed them hemmed, so I thought I'd see if it would be possible for same day service. Not only did they hem them by Thursday, but there was no extra charge for the rush. Bottom line: you pay for what you get. If you're spending the money to get tailoring in the first place, get it done right! read more

I took a size 8 dress in and had them size it down to about a 2 and it looks beautiful! They do impeccable work and never complain to you how hard it is to tailor or how much work it will be. I brought my bridesmaid dress to be altered and they ruined the stitching in the chest area and did not evenly sew the waist line back together. I had to bring this to a different tailor who needed to take the dress completely apart to fix what they had done. read more

I've been getting alterations done by Antonio, Carlos and the rest of the team for a number of years and have always been very happy with the results. The work is top-notch whether modifying a suit jacket or hemming a pair of jeans. They listen to what the customer wants but will also offer the opinion of trained tailor where appropriate. They are not cheap, but the price is proportional to the quality of their work. If you're concerned about the cost, ask for an estimate so there are no surprises. read more

Unfortunately I had a poor experience. I took a jacket in to get sleeve buttons put on. Things started well when they said they could do it within the 24hr period I had available. I asked for working button holes, but they laughed at me, adding that the person who did them was out for the day. So I said fake buttonholes was ok. When I returned the next day to pick the jacket up, they charged $35 and had just sewn the buttons on - no fake button holes at all - and had sewn them on crooked on one sleeve. They appologised and fixed the sleeve there and then - great - but then added that could do the button holes (they suggested working ones, which was good with me) but wanted to charge $140. That seemed a bit extreme to me seeing as I had that done to another jacket in London last month for 20 pounds, so I left rather dissatisfied - with only four buttons sewn on each sleeve and $35 out of pocket. read more

I cannot recommend newbury tailoring for work on men's suits to anyone. if you are discerning about your tailoring, their work wont meet your expectations, and if you're not, go somewhere that isn't so expensive I had several suits taken in, and the work was very poorly done. There were three major things wrong with work: - first, the suits were taken in asymetrically with one side somewhat more tapered than the other - second, the cut was done in a very "curvy" way, the way you would taken in a women's blazer. It was not an appropriate cut for men's suit. -Third, and most discouragingly, the seam where the alteration was done didn't lay flat afterwad- there was a distinct pucker on the seam above the pocket on two of the three suits I asked them to fix the two that were puckered - they marked up the jackets and when I came in, they had simply been taken in more, and the new work still didn't lay flat. I had to take them elsewhere to get the problem remedied. They did a fine job hemming the pants, but that's not exactly rocket science. If you have a nice jacket, take it else where. read more

What a horrible, horrible business. I took a dress and some jeans in a few months ago - life got in the way, and admittedly, I forgot about them. I never received a single reminder phone call, and upon recalling that I hadn't picked up my items, I called them. I was told, with no regret, sympathy, or even a hint of kindness that my items were given away. I asked why no one called me, and they said "we did." I told him, no, no he didn't. He insisted, and I asked to speak to someone else. He told me he is the owner, and hung up on me. I'm APPALLED by all of this. Did I forget? Sure. But this atrocious customer service is unforgivable. read more

WEDDING DRESS MESS UP - I was referred to Newbury Tailoring by a close friend of my to-be-mother-in-law to do several alterations to my sample-purchased wedding dress. I was assured that this shop does all of the tailoring for Valentino, and that while they were expensive, they could be trusted to do impeccable work on my Anne Barge gown. I dropped the dress off on JANUARY 18th and the scope of work was - Hem the dress, take up the top lace, insert cups, add bustle, add cloth covered buttons from the extra fabric removed to mask the zipper in the back. The first 3 fittings were fine, but at the last fitting, where everything was supposed to be complete, the buttons weren't put on. Antonio assured me that the buttons would be done the following week and that I could pick up the dress and take it to the cleaners (sample = dirty) and it would be perfect. I picked up the dress and took it to the dry cleaner Antonio instructed me to. When we opened the back - the buttons weren't on the dress! I called Antonio, and he told me that the buttons would be destroyed by the cleaning process and so they should clean the dress and then he would go over to the cleaners and sew the buttons on himself prior to the April 18th date they gave me. Sounded too good to be true! IT WAS! April 18th, called the cleaners about picking up the dress. They tell me the dress is clean but they can't get in touch with Antonio April 21st, I call Newbury. They tell me Antonio is on vacation, but will be back the following week and they will have him complete they dress by Thursday, April 30th. April 30th, Dress not done. Call tailor again. Antonio is in NEW YORK but will do it Monday May 4th. May 5th Dress not done. Now Newbury tells me Antonio is sick but he will FOR SURE have the dress done by May 11th. May 12th - get a call from Antonio - he's at the cleaners and the buttons don't match. He TELLS ME to get the dress cleaned but doesn't THINK to clean the silk he removed from the dress before making the buttons. Also, the buttons are ENORMOUS. They are the ladies' suit cuff buttons, not the pea-sized buttons for a wedding dress. It's too late. The dress needs to be ready for Memorial Day weekend. FOUR MONTHS OF FORESIGHT and I have to forego having the one embellishment I wanted on my wedding gown. May 16th, I go to Newbury Tailoring to get my fabric back so my mom can try to make the buttons herself. They LOST MY FABRIC. It's gone. They said they would deliver it to me on Monday, 5/18. It's the 20th and I haven't so much as gotten a call. Bottom line - over-priced, poor detail work, lack of accountability. Don't take anything that means ANYTHING to you there. I am out $300 for essentially a hem, a shortening of straps and a bustle. read more

They charge INSANE prices -- brought them a SIMPLE blackout curtain of 30 inches wide and they wanted $20 for the alteration. Then went to other place in Boston and they charged me $7 for the alteration. read more

I went here to get an estimate for the surgeon's cuffs i wanted done on a suit jacket. The tailor and I talked about the work needed and he showed me an example as requested, though I'm not sure if he was the one who did it or was just tailoring the jacket. We discussed the price and he named $18 a button. That's $144 dollars for button work. I told him that a nearby place could do $12 a button and if he could go down a bit. Flat out , literally tells me to go elsewhere, shooes me out the door. It would seem that he does not care about getting customers. read more

After hearing good things about this tailor from a few stores, I brought two dresses to be altered. The alterations were expensive ($80 for two simple hems) but they were special dresses so I went ahead. The first time, both dresses came back with very uneven hems. I went back and they did not apologize, but redid the dresses. I picked them up today and both hems were wrong AGAIN. Jagged, frayed, and horrible. One dress I fear is ruined. The man who did the hemming was very nice, but the gentleman at the counter was rude and unprofessional. I bring all my clothing to Newbury Tailoring for alterations. Before suits were commonly sold in athletic cut, I would need to take my suits in for major alterations. Typically a 46R suit comes with 38" waist pants. I would need to have the pants re-cut and taken down to a 34" waist. Not to mention, the jacket would need to be tailored to a more athletic fit as well. The work here is undetectable and flawless. read more

The best tailor around to take designer jeans! My husband and I drive all the way in from the suburbs whenever we buy a new pair. Newbury Tailoring will re-attach the original hem and they are always able to suggest the perfect length. Plus, they always leave a little extra material when shortening, so if there is a problem, you will never be stuck with pants that are too short (something that has happened to me elsewhere). read more

Awful! I had a dress shirt tailored, and they made it like a corset: too tight at the chest, too loose at the bottom, and the sleeves were awful. When I lift my arms, it looked like I had horns on my shoulders! I really don't know why I even paid them. Really ruined. read more

Brides- do not bring your dress here!! Just like one of the previous brides reviewed, I would give them an 8 or so on the customer service front, but the quality and timeliness is very poor. I brought my wedding dress here 2 months before my wedding to have the train shortened, as well as have padding added in the bust, bustle added, and sash tacked on. Every time I went in to have it fitted, there was one thing they forgot to do. I ended up having to go in 5 times!! The padding on the top is uneven, and the halter is still too big after them attempting to take it in two times. But the bustle is the worst. It's uneven with a huge silver hook in the back, so that it's so obvious, and it wasn't placed in the middle of the back so it hangs uneven. The worst part though was they quoted me $150 and then ended up charging me $250. I wouldn't have minded paying that if they had done a good job, but all of the work seemed so careless and rushed. I would never go back here and would not recommend anyone that needs tailoring on formal clothing to go elsewhere. read more

I brought my wedding dress to Newbury Tailoring Co. to get some relatively minor alterations 4 months before my wedding. I came back 5 times for fittings. Every time the dress just fit worse and worse. Finally, 2 weeks before my wedding, I left and brought my dress to a different tailor. It took one fitting and one week at the other tailor for my dress to fit perfectly. I would not recommend this place to anyone! read more

I've had several dresses altered here and the work is always impeccable. The people who work there are extremely friendly, the location is convenient, and I think the prices are very fair for the quality of the workmanship - nothing ever looks like it's been touched, and with a few quick pins you can be in & out of there.
