But sometimes they don't have the fitting or comfort that suits me, so I forfeit the design and look for the next thing. Well, not anymore! I have been buying things left & right-too small/too big for the past 2yrs, knowing the amazing craftsmanship the team here at Sonia's tailoring shop upholds. It's a sweet mom & pop's shop. So I feel extra special knowing I am bringing in clothing into this lovely family owned business. I have so many ideas on modifying my garments. And speaking with the team such as with Carlos and revisioning a different way to wear clothing, makes me feel connected. They always seem as excited to work on my projects as I am to fitting them in a 1-3 week window! Please! Buy that top you thought you couldn't fit, buy those pants that drops too long. Never regret walking pass a nice piece, they will guide you thru their services on making it suit your needs with an add of flare. This place is a scam and a crap bucket of bad news. I remiss not reading the reviews sooner. I came here to get my bridesmaid dress altered and completely ripped me off. At first they told me the alterations were $300, and once I got the invoice they said it was $400. Being ripped off here is worse than the economic crisis rn. I'm slowly being convinced they're running some sort of a poorly executed Ponzi scheme. When I went to pick up my dress, it barely fit, and had strings hanging off everywhere. There was nothing we could do because my sisters wedding was the next day. Like where do you get off? When I was speaking to one of the intolerabley looking emoloyees there, they couldn't even look me in the eyes to apologize for THEIR problem. If you want to be treated like a turd stained piece of underwear, then this place is def for you. Really sad to be leaving this review. Have been a loyal customer for over 8 years and have spend a lot of money here over the years. They lost me and my entire family over the response to a series of issues with my last set of alterations. Brought several items to be altered here, one of which was altered incorrectly and the other was not altered to my liking. When I dropped off the items, I was told the employee at the register did not know the price of the alterations and they would send me an invoice. They also told me I could pick pay when I picked up the items. As I have worked with the tailor in the past they stood by their work, I did not mind doing this. One of the items I asked to be rushed, and was charged a "rush fee". Imagine my surprise when I came to pick up the "rushed" item the day I was supposed to, and I as told that they would not start work without payment. I quickly paid, which was no problem, but was so disappointed that the job I had paid a rush fee for was not completed- and I still paid the fee so I could get it later the next week! I could tell when I got the items back the next week, they were done in a rush. Won't go into details but one item had buttons added when it wasn't supposed to and the other needed additional alterations. What got me was that I was asked to pay for additional work and an additional rush fee and, AGAIN, I was told that I could not be told the price of the items. I sent an email to explain the situation to the owner (I was told that is who received emails after requesting, and being denied a phone number/call) and ask them to make it right. Below is what I requested: 1. Return the rush fee as I did not receive the item on the agreed upon date (ie. I paid for a service I did not receive) 2. Ensure that the item that had buttons added and other details was altered correctly (this I already had confirmation from them-so hopefully they won't mess that up). 3. To finish alterations on the sleeve of an item- they charged me close to 50 dollars to remove an elastic from the sleeve but did not do other work) What I got was a response basically gaslighting me. They told me one dress did originally have buttons. I literally sent a photo from the website and the person who emailed me back had the audacity to tell me " you couldn't see it in the picture from the website I sent, but it was there". I know what my dress looked like! They told me too bad on the rush fee (which is a service I didn't receive), and they told me I would have to pay another fee plus a rush fee to get the sleeves on the dress corrected. Oh, and they could still not give me pricing on anything. It isn't even about the money, it's about the principle. This place has always been quirky and disorganized in terms of how it's been managed, but I liked the tailor and they stood by their work. Sadly, never again. One dress was taken in and the straps were shortened, and the straps got way over-shortened, so the dress now sits up in my armpits. This is a designer dress from overseas, so I'm fairly upset. The third dress needed hook and eye attachments between two sets of buttons. The eyes sewn on were laughably bad, leaving the dress gaping just as much as before. I've seen the reviews, so I didn't want to leave my dress again. I fixed it myself well enough. The second pair of pants was okay--shorter than expected--except that I paid extra for the original hem to be maintained, and it wasn't. The reviews are right. Go somewhere else. Here are bulleted things to know before bringing clothes here for tailoring: 1. They will be behind schedule for whatever date they give you for alterations mine was literally 30 days behind the original date I was given as well as almost twice as expensive 2. They will not do the request correctly which will result in multiple fittings 3. They will text you sporadically to tell you they are behind schedule or miscalculated the cost they quoted you because they are unable to deal with customers appropriately. They will only let you know they are running late or misquoted one day before you are supposed to get your garments back 4. They will not answer the phone or return phone calls and not apologize for inconveniencing you when you go there because you couldn't get ahold of anyone for an update 5. If your alterations are more than a hem, plan for them to run one month behind the date the quoted you. Do not expect an apology when late 6. Do not bother to tell them you are upset with their customer service because the woman running the shop will only give you excuses rather than any type of sincere explanation 7. They will offer to deliver your clothes within boston if you have to go 5 times for fittings of an incorrect alteration. I never write reviews, and I hate to complain about people's business, but I feel compelled to share because this was such a terrible experience I'd hate for you to have a similar one. When I picked up my clothing, not only had 3 of my items not been altered at all, but they messed up my bathing suit. Carlos agreed and apologized asking me to come back in a few days so they could fix the items for free. When I went back, I was shocked to see they didn't fix the things, but made them worse. They put a button in the wrong spot on the pants and used some random button with white font on it instead of something discreet. They took the zipper out of the other pair, but then didn't close the top properly - instead threds are loose and if you pull one, the stitches unravel. The bathing suit was even worse - not only did they make the cup fabric ripple, but they reattached the straps in two different ways so now the cup flares out and is not stable. Carlos and the front staff agreed the work was low quality and said a manager would call to refund me. I spoke with the manager Sonya today and asked for my money back for those 3 items. At first she seemed nice, but quickly she began to argue with me about a refund. She told me she's going through personal things and that she has "more important issues to deal with than this" and hung up on me. Then she called me back and agreed to refund some of the items, but upon sending me the receipt, I saw that they charged me to "fix" the items that they messed up!! For example, to remove the zipper and stitch up the pants was supposed to be $38 total, but then they secretly added an additional $18 to "close the pants at the top." In fact, Carlos confirmed there would be no additional charges because they messed them up. So instead of refunding me in full, Sonya only gave me the $18 back and said the $38 was because they removed the zipper "even though we did not close the pants at the top." What kind of alteration business would ever dream of charging you for pants that they never finished??? Moreover, this was the second mistake - the first was they didn't alter them the first time around. I told Sonya that this is bad business and that I wanted to talk with Carlos because I know he'd vouch for me about the pants, but she said "thanks for telling me about business; then go somewhere else" and hung up on me again and stopped answering the phone. When I looked through the receipt closer, the amount charged does not correspond with what I was told in person for some of the items - for example, $35.78 for darting the bust of a blouse - I was told that would be $15/20 max, but because I had so many items, I just agreed to the full price and they never gave me a breakdown in writing so I didn't see they were upcharging me. That's my own fault. Bottom line, the work is low quality, the manager was incredibly unprofessional and rude, they lie about how much they're charging you, and if they mess something up, they screw you over and don't do a good job fixing it. Even with personal things on her mind which I normally would have grace for, I've never had a manager be so unprofessional and unkind. I used to go to Newbury Tailoring when it was on Newbury St and they were great, but unfortunately their quality has dropped and they've become very unprofessional. Don't waste your time and money here. There are better Tailors in Boston. It seems like this place has gone downhill over the years. After my last experience, I would not bring any luxury clothes or wedding dresses to this place to have altered unless you want your clothes botched. In June, I came in to have my Bandage dress tailored for a wedding. It was pretty basic work. I requested to see the owner Carlos since he worked on my clothes in the past. Boy was that a mistake. The dress was a little big so I asked him to shorten the sleeves and hem the bottom. My biggest gripe at the time was that it took two weeks for me to get my dress back. When I tried to inquire about it, the receptionist Sonya refused to let me speak to the owner, and would put me on hold for long periods so I would hang up. Then would pretend that she forgot that I was on the line when I called back. When I finally got my dress the first thing I did was speak to the owner Carlos to complain about the rude woman and her lack of customer service. I explained to him that if it wasn't for my long history coming to his tailor, I would have given them a negative review. So I went to the event last summer, wore the dress and didn't notice anything amiss at the time. A few months later, I went to wear the dress again for another occasion (this would have been my second time wearing it) and noticed that one of the sleeves unraveled where the trailer stitched it. So, I called Newbury Tailoring to speak to Carlos and hear what he had to say since it was a dress worth a thousand dollars and the screw up was on their end. When I called, a man answered and said Carlos was there and that he would put him on the line. Then Sonya answered and she was already on defense mode. She stated that they would not fix the sleeve for free because it had been a few months. I asked her to let me speak to Carlos so he could make the decision on what he thought was best for the dress. She went on to tell me that she makes the decisions their. Then texted me and said that she did not want me to return. How convenient, botch someone's expensive dress thats been going there for years and then take zero accountability. Lucky for me thier are plenty of qualified white glove tailors in Boston. I truly hate taking time out of the day to leave a poor review but unfortunately, my experience with Newberry tailoring was so disappointing I felt that it was necessary to do so. I have no clue why this tailor was recommended to me, I have had the most unpleasant experience and am so disappointed. Firstly, get ready for extremely long wait times - I understand we're getting back to some sort of normalcy and waiting isn't an issue for me (IF the wait is worth it, not if the garment is incomplete or in worse condition than I left it) I did find it strange that for such simple fixes it would take nearly a month. Secondly, be prepared to make several trips back and forth since the garments will not be done correctly. If this isn't a wedding dress fitting, there shouldn't need to be multiple trips. It's a shame I have to give this place a low rating because they did a good job with the tailoring. I had dropped off a white jumpsuit for my rehearsal dinner and when I came back I noticed there was a yellowish stain on the front, that looks like a sweat stain. When I brought it to their attention they said no problem they could get it out. Fast forward to the next day when I went to go pick it up. They told me that they couldn't get it out and I had to get it dry cleaned. They did give me 10 dollars off for "all the back and forth" but told me they couldn't do anything about the stain. They said they only cover the cost when it happens in their store, which is did. This is a brand new item with the tags still on it. They told me that "someone probably just sweat when they wore it" which isn't possible because it's never been worn before. Very disappointing experience and I will never be back nor will I recommend their services. If you damage an item you should cover the cost to repair or replace. These negative reviews were unexpected and concerning to read. I think that if this is a family-run business, the owners/employees are probably overwhelmed and can come off as "rude" when stressed. My husband and I stumbled upon Newbury Tailoring a bit blindly. It was close to us and that was our primary reason for choosing them. In the end we were very happy with our choice! We were specifically happy with the quality of their work as well as the care they take with their work. We went in for my husband's leather jacket. It was torn through the entire sleeve. Upon retrieving the jacket, we couldn't figure out which sleeve was initially torn. The quality of work was impressive. Also, I brought in a button for my wool coat as we were picking up the jacket. They decided to sew the button on my coat on the spot so I wouldn't have to come back. Overall, I was very impressed. The woman helping us was very friendly, pleasant and personable. I got two dresses simple altered here and it was fine. But I brought a bridesmaid dress to be tailored here and it was pretty expensive. The first time I picked up the dress I did not try it on there. But when I got home it was very clear it was not done properly. So I called them back to make another appointment. The second time I tried it on at the place before I left. This time something else was wrong with it. This carried on 3 more times... Something different each time was just off. Eventually I just had to take it even though it was still a little off. I don't know if it was the dress or what, but for a bridesmaid dress that seems like way too much effort to go back and forth so much to the tailor. After the 3rd time they said I don't need to pay for the extra alterations, since I had already paid $180. But after I took the dress the final time, someone calls me a few days later and says they forgot to charge me for the extra alternations? Communications seems to be off here. read more

If you're on a strict timeline and/or want to be able to depend on your clothing fitting correctly the first time, I'd advise against Newbury Tailors. Unless you have a lot of extra free time to make multiple trips to bring back unaltered/incorrectly altered pieces pieces, or to go back for pieces they forgot to give you, I'd avoid this place. I brought 2 dresses, a men's suit, and 2 pants, all of which needed no major changes. The dress needed to be hemmed (low back pulled up) and the suit/pants needed to be taken in. When I picked up the items, 1 dress wasn't altered at all (it was seemingly forgotten about, though I was still originally charged for it) and all of the pants were too tight. It seems that the measurements weren't taken correctly or the tailor didn't follow directions. Upon pick up I also wasn't given 1 of the pair of pants at all. To remedy this situation, I checked in with Sonia over text at the front desk who didn't get back to me for 20 days until I followed up a second time. I brought in another dress to be hemmed, taken in at the neck, and the slit to be heightened, and the 3rd pair of pants that were given back to us late to be corrected. I was given a month alteration time with a pick-up day the day before we were leaving for a wedding out of state. This would have been fine if they were able to follow directions. However, I got a text the day before pickup stating they needed to charge me $50 (which they lessened to $25) to alter the pants because they weren't brought in within a weeks time and they never noted the slit adjustment. Both of issues were due to the fault of Newbury's employees, but they decided it was best to punish the customer for their (multiple) mistakes. I asked if the $25 fee could be waived, since both of these issues were due to their errors. Instead, they offered to credit me $150 (the cost of the alterations to the dress) and not do any alterations at all instead of biting the bullet and taking a hit on $25 to keep a long standing customer. Their exact wording was "we can't do free work and all other customers would be happy to pay the price." I myself work in customer retention and blaming the customer doesn't bode well for long standing relationships. To be clear, I voiced that it wasn't the money that was the issue -- it was principle. I advised that it was unfortunate that they felt $25 was worth losing a customer over (a customer that they have had for years -- I literally brought my wedding dress to them years ago) but they stuck to their guns. When I went in to pick up my unaltered pieces, they were left in a bag on the front desk which clearly sent the message that they did not think it was worth having a conversation with me. The overall point is that they seem to have trouble completing the basic tasks that a tailor is meant for (like, actually altering the clothing correctly, or at all)... so I'd go elsewhere. read more

Call Newbury Tailoring. I brought my dress in on Thursday at 2pm and they hemmed it's silk chiffon gorgeousness to perfection and had it ready for me to pick up by Saturday morning at 11am. Yes, I picked it up on the way to the wedding. Don't judge me. The total was $60...I have no idea if that included a charge for rush, but I didn't mind forking over the dough. I purchased a pair of 3Sixteen raw denim and I was hesitant to get them hemmed unless it was from a reputable place. I checked self edge and blue owl, and they both cost ~25 + shipping, so that gave me a ballpark on how much I expect to spend. I cuff my jeans, so it was critical that I get chain stitching and that my selvedge line wasn't destroyed with an original hem. I dropped off my jeans on a Saturday and I picked them up on the following Wednesday. Carlos was incredibly helpful in determining how much to hem in order to keep my jeans cuffed. The resulting stitching looks neat and parallel, and my selvedge line is intact (they use chain stitching). Cost, $30. Pretty good. read more

Newbury Tailoring was recommended by the shop where we bought my daughter-in-law's wedding dress. We were stressed about the timeframe, because we didn't realize that the dress shop didn't do (or arrange for) alterations. With two months to go, we went with the recommendation without investigating other alternatives. To be fair, the dress came out beautifully. That said, here are my concerns... 1. When we arrived, we were given an "estimate" for over $1100. Sticker shock and what I've understood since then is that this is pricey. Okay, it's Newbury Street. I'm over that. 2. At the second appointment, my daughter-in-law tried on the dress and there was a major glitch on the seam. The tailor had sewn a piece of the dress into the seam itself. So they had to fix that... 3. When we finally went to pick up the dress (4th time there), I was overcharged. There was a general "glossing over" the details on the invoice and I was charged for the more expensive bustle (as well as a $150 up charge for a wedding less than two months away...by two days.) 4. This is my biggest concern. The tailor took photos of my beautiful Japanese daughter without asking permission. I said something to both him and the person at check out and we were promised that they wouldn't be used on social media. So if they aren't being used for that, then why do they need them. Creepy. AND...asking permission should always be a part of the protocol. I don't live that close to Boston, but even still, I wouldn't return. read more

I dropped off four pairs of slacks that I'd already let the hem out on and just wanted them to stitch off the bottoms nicely so it looked even and machined. The person I spoke to on the day I dropped it off couldn't give me a quote, saying it was too early and the boss wasn't in yet (this was shortly after 8 when they "opened"). I should have known better than to just leave assuming the price would be reasonable. I came back when it was done and they wanted to charge me $140!!!! I was shocked, and they immediately dropped it to $100 without me even asking, which tells me their profit margin is through the roof even accounting for Boston prices. I've brought several off the rack suits here for alterations, and they even recently helped me figure out measurements for an online made-to-measure suit. Until yesterday, I would have written a very favorable review of Newbury Tailor. And in spite of my bad experience, I will say, their quality is very good and I have never had a complaint about the actual work they've done. Until now, they've always been very courteous and professional, and I've enjoyed our relationship. Until now. A few weeks ago, I asked them to hem a pair of trousers and shorten a sweater by about 2 inches - an ordinary knit-blend sweater from Banana Republic. Nothing complicated. When I went to pick up the items, I was first greeted by not the usual young man who works there and is always full of smiles, but a petulant man who was clearly eager to go and begin his Saturday night festivities. An auspicious beginning. Anyway, they had charged me $20 for the pants (what I'd expected and had paid before, no big deal), but $35 to hem the sweater!! I thought this was pretty outrageous so I asked to speak with the manager, Antonio, and told him I was confused as to why a simple two-inch hem across the bottom of a sweater would cost so much - and why no one would have advised me of this when I dropped it off. The sweater was brand new and the price tag was hanging off of it - the $30 clearance price tag for the sweater I'd bought on sale. You'd think that someone would want to mention that I was about to pay more to have the sweater altered than I'd paid in the first place... But no. Antonio insisted that's what it costs and it didn't matter what I thought, because cost is cost. He said no one would have said anything beforehand because that's what it costs, and I could check but he promised I couldn't find it cheaper anywhere else. THEN, he decided to insult me. Publicly. He said my sweater was cheap and he had given me a deal. He SHOULD have charged me $60, he said! And I wish I could show you all a picture of this sweater, but really, it's a solid color - no cableknit or anything crazy. Just your basic relatively thin knit sweater. By this point, I was really just speechless, paid the $55 for both items and left, never to return. I feel sad about all of this, because my introduction to Antonio was a particularly poignant one, about a year ago, the day before my mother's funeral. I needed the sleeves of a jacket altered in about 3 hours - and he did it for me, with a smile on his face (those sleeves, on a suit jacket, were only something like $35 by the way.) I had just moved back to Boston and have used Newbury Tailor ever since. I'm very petite and have to have practically everything altered - so I'm no stranger to tailoring, and I won't be a stranger to the service in the future, either. Just not theirs. I'm dumbfounded by the price of hemming a sweater, yes. But I'm more dumbfounded that Antonio would say goodbye to a good customer over a $35 alteration. I made it clear to him that without him bending, just a little, I couldn't really come back, because i felt unhappy about not being told in advance about the cost of the sweater. (if I'd known, I would have just worn it long!) Even if he'd reduced the price by $5, I would have looked at it as a gesture and I would have been ok. But without even that, and after being humiliated by him in his shop, I don't really feel like returning to him with my clothes - or my money - ever again. Yesterday's experience ended my relationship with Newbury Tailor, and I feel very sad about it. Sad but firm. There are other great tailors in Boston - many of them mentioned on this site - and I think I'll start a new relationship with one of them. read more

A family run business that really, honestly cares about its clientle. I lost a lot of weight this past year - a LOT of weight. And I was faced with two choices: spend $10's of $1000's re-outfitting myself, or spend a fraction of that taking my favorites into Newbury Tailoring and have them work a few miracles. It seems to me the negative or low reviews here come from people not getting their way. May I remind you the reason you and I come here is for excellent craftsmanship and not to score a deal. If fit is not a concern and cost is a major concern then do what I do, for say the hemming of jeans, and go to the nearest dry cleaner. But, when I want to transform a purchase, no matter how cheap it was, I go to Antonio and Carlos. I have been coming here for over 10 years! Since, I was a poor college student that always carried the belief my parents inculcated: quality over quantity and a tailor is the best asset. Have I gotten annoyed at the cost of certain jobs? Certainly. But, I have always been amazed by their work. Many an odd looking ASOS dress has been taken here and left looking in the Alice + Olivia, DvF, and Nanette Lepore vicinity. I mean I know they have done work for Valentino, Saks and Riccardi in Boston but I won't pretend they can change my ASOS fabrics into an Armani one! Be patient, reasonable and understand what you are coming here for and I guarantee you will not regret it! The proof is in the pudding! read more

Great tailor in the Boston area. I came to them with a bridesmaid dress that was too small, and they were able to (non-judgementally) take it out flawlessly so that fits perfectly and you can't even tell where they let out the seams! Fast turn-around time and great service. I am in the process of getting my wedding gown tailored with them as well and it has been such an easy process. They make me feel good in my gown and have done magnificent alterations. FYI: They have moved to a new location at 376 Boylston St, and will now be operating under the name "Boston Tailors." If I could give them a negative star rating I would. In fact, they are borderline thieves and the very worst tailors I have encountered anywhere ever. Originally, I brought suit pants to be tailored. When I returned they did not fit properly, we did a refitting and they asked me to return again. I did so and left before trying on the pants - my own fault. Next time I returned I brought with me the still-ill-fitting suit pants, a pair of jeans and two blazers. I expected that my previous experience had to have been a deviation from the normal care and skill with which they work and service customers - I was wrong. I was unable to return for the clothes for close to 4 weeks and, upon my return, was in a big hurry to catch a plane. I grabbed the clothes, paid close to $200 and fled home to pack. Upon reaching my destination I came to realize they had not done any of the work for which I was charged. The clothes still had chalk markings and pins in them - they literally, for four weeks, had not touched the garments. I called and asked they reverse the charges - they agreed - but for 3 weeks now still have not done so. I continue to call and speak to the owner who claims each time the reversal is impending. I really dont want to waste any more time going over there to sort this out - they have wasted enough of my time as is. So Im told, they were once very good, but have grown too fas and their work has suffered greatly. They should do less work and try to remaster their craft. Terrible service. Went here initially because I bought their groupon. I took a few pants to get more fitted. This was back in their old location in Newbury St. They did a great job on them, and they fit much better now! Fast forward to a few weeks back, when I needed to get my suit tailored for a wedding (and I guess just in general because it was a little loose). I went back to them (sans groupon unfortunately lol), to see what they could do with it. I needed the jacket taken in a little bit and the pants more tapered towards the bottom. When I came back, the jacket fit very nicely, but the pants were still a little baggy towards the bottom. I asked them if they could taper it some more, and they gladly said yes (and without extra charge, too, which I was kind of worried about haha). I was able to pick it up the day after, and now my suit is now amazing lol. Highly recommend them! Great service, and everyone there is super friendly and helpful! read more

I had 2 pairs to Applebottom jeans that need to be hemmed...oh I wish! ok, so I had 2 pairs of Se7ens jeans that needed to be hemmed to my short legs, damn it for being only 5'2"! went in there one weekend day and it was pretty busy. took a few minutes before I was serviced but it gave me a little time to look around and check out the action figures in the cases. pretty neat! finally, in the dressing room and Carlos measured me out. You have the option ( ladies) of hemming them for flats or heels. I opted for heels since I wanted the hem to be a little longer. They even have different heels size to fit your preference. 3 inches, ok. It was a quick mark out of the chalk and I was done. Come back mid week. then the day finally came, I was getting my jeans back. I tried them on and they were prefect! The jeans looked like they have never been cut, its amazing! Original hem and all! $25 for each pair..soo worth it for the quality and perfection of work. Will def come back here for my other pants. read more

Slacks, Jeans, and Khakis hemmed; Seats taken in; legs tapered; sleeves shortened. I have yet to have a problem with any of their work. Everything has fit perfect and I keep going back. I find them to be a little pricey but C'est la vie. read more
