They were very friendly, personable and extremely professional. I opted for the 4 weeks expedited option (an extra $100 to have it in 4 weeks instead of 6 weeks) as I had a tight deadline for upcoming interviews. Although the suit arrived in 4.5 weeks, they both were very responsive via email and had discussed with their tailor to arrange for immediate adjustments if it needed that. You will not believe my epic saga with Alton Lane - A MUST READ before visiting one of their shops. After $1,900, 6 months, dozens of emails, a handful of calls, 4 rounds of alterations, 1 complete remake, and more hassle than any customer should endure - I'm left with one pretty good suit, another suit that I wouldn't wear to a dinner party, and one final unanswered email request for a resolution. The long and colorful version: 1. I was thrilled when my first suit arrived on schedule at the six week mark. However there was only one suit - I was not aware that I would have to wait longer for the second. Also, why would you present a $900 suit to a customer straight out of the box and wrinkled up? An extra few bucks for a press would add a lot to the perceived value. 2. The first suit did not fit well despite Neil's quick measurements and "3D body scan." Nevertheless Neil assured me it looked great. Then when I said the pants were too long and the sleeves were too short, he agreed (so it looked great or it didn't?), then hastily estimated the alterations. I didn't feel like there was much concern for ensuring that I received nothing but the best fit. 3. As expected, the pants were still too long after the first round of alterations. I did, however, appreciate Haley's quick turnaround on the second round of alterations. 4. Finally, one suit and another due in a few weeks. All set now? No, I had to remind Neil to send the second round of alterations to the factory so that they could make the second suit identical to the first. Why wasn't that automatic? 5. A couple weeks later, the second suit is ready to ship. Can you ship to London like Neil promised? Yes of course, but it will be a $50 additional charge! Luckily customer service agreed to do this for free after a few emails back and forth. $1900 for a couple of Chinese machine-made suits and you want to milk an extra $50 out of me? I was surprised enough to see the initial shipping charge on the original invoice - for shipping to Alton Lane, not my house. 6. Suit two arrives in London (where I moved after the initial purchase) - finally! Uh oh, something looks weird. Maybe it's the bell-bottom jacket? At first I thought it just needed to be pressed, but then I compared it to the first suit. The measurements aren't even close as can be seen in the photos. 7. Alton Lane agrees that the suit looks strange and offers to cover the cost of a local tailor. *****THIS IS WHERE IT GETS INTERESTING!***** 8. I take BOTH suits (for good measure) to a couple tailors in London, and they tell me that BOTH suits are so poorly constructed that they won't touch them. They said I might find a dry cleaner who will do the alterations - they'll take ANY job! 9. After careful review, Alton Lane admits that they screwed up my measurements - somehow a few inches were added to my suits in random areas (they could see this in their computer system). They agreed to remake the second suit, but despite their admitted screw-up on the first suit, they refused to remake it because I implicitly approved the fit when I left the store with it. Last I checked, THEY are the fashion experts right? How could they have let me leave the store with a suit that fit so poorly that I can't find a tailor to fix it?? 10. The second suit remake finally arrives and looks pretty good - yippy! They eventually agree to alter (but not remake) the first suit, and as expected it comes back fitting slightly better but still a bit awkward. Mind you, they earlier admitted that the measurements were off and that it was "unalterable." 11. I sent photos of the botched repair job back to Alton Lane, but it appears they intend to cut their losses here - no response to date. I can't say I wouldn't do the same thing, but I also can't say I won't ask my bank to dispute the charge. I certainly didn't get the $900 suit I paid for. All in all, I am sincerely disappointed with my experience at Alton Lane, and I would never be a customer to them again. Haley did a wonderful job trying to clean up the mess, but the whole debacle was doomed from the start. Even had they delivered two perfectly fitted suits, the hassle and loss of time were already enough to ruin the experience. I was excited to spend the money for a couple "high-end" custom suits but feel worse off than when I paid $200 for quick-made suits in Asia. RECOMMENDATION: Only buy Chinese suits in China. Pay the premium for a handmade suit from a tailor who you can meet in person. read more

If you're looking for a tailored suit, blazer, slacks, or shirts with concierge service and for the price of JCPenny or Macys, gentlemen this is your place. You enter off Newbury street to a scene straight out of Brooklyn with hipster vibe and masculine Garden and Gun vibe all in one. They offer beer, scotch, bourbon, or water and fine leather couches. They take reservations in advance and have pretty flexible hours. I love the biometric body scanner that you try combined with the secondary tailor tape measuring -- measure twice, cut one! They electronically save your measurements before and after tailoring and there fore can just send you suits, shirts, etc without having to come back in or without having to remeasure you when you come in to look at fabrics. Nice! I've ordered two suits now and they've both been nearly perfect straight from the company. They use old yarn facilities with precise measurements and then use a local tailor for any adjustments necessary. My trousers needed to be let out a tad in the crotch but were otherwise perfect. My suits arrived in about 3-6 weeks and the tailoring adjustments only took one week. The great part is it's all included, transparent pricing. That said, this isn't the place to come get some discount suits. You'll likely pay 1.5-2x the price of a medium-range department store and 3x the price of Joseph A Banks but you're going to get more than 2-3x the suit that should last a long time and look great. Including in some of the tailoring you might have to do to a suit and you might be looking at the same price as some suits in medium-range department stores. It's certainly cheaper than the nicer department stores. Shirts might be the best deal as you can get some good shirts from 80-100 bucks perfectly tailored with nice fabric -- much cheaper than off the rack comparisons at medium and very nice departments stores. Both Neil and Hayden have taken good care of me and I'll be back for more. TIP: Sign up for their emails and you'll get some good discounts and percentage off specials. You're welcome to mention my name (or customer service rep, Cameron's name) and you and I might get some mulah back. They have all kinds of kickbacks and deals they can make. Just ask. Caveat: A lot of the suiting is pretty traditional in styling (lapels medium-sized, box shoulders) but there can be adjustments made. Avoid Alton Lane. The in store service is good but there seems to be no support behind it. Try calling customer service before you go. They never answer the phone. Try leaving a message and they won't ever call you back. Try the chat feature and wait, and wait, and then wait some more. They are 100% unresponsive. If that's not enough, they don't meet promised delivery dates. When I got my most recent order, two of the three shirts were stained. I called but of course no answer so off to the store we go where they are unempowered to even give a simple refund. Do yourself a favor and spend your money elsewhere. read more

What an experience. As someone who places a high premium on customer service (not to mention high quality), I couldn't have been more impressed with Alton Lane. Because of my line of work, I'm rarely, if ever required to wear a suit. I am getting married this fall, and a tuxedo wasn't something that was ever in the cards. I figured it was high time to step up my suit game, and when I learned of Alton Lane's approach to custom suiting, it seemed like a perfect fit. (Pun 100% intended) I scheduled an appointment at their terrific Newbury Street showroom (sleek, masculine decor, dark woods, loft-like) and met Chris who guided me through their process. There was nothing snooty about it, despite the Newbury address, and Chris was as welcoming as he was helpful in my quest to find the proper suit. While this suit was primarily for my wedding day, I also wanted it to double as my go-to suit for the rest of my life. I explained my needs to Chris, and he guided me through the process, offering advice where I needed it while allowing me to dictate my own personal style. He doesn't come off as a pushy salesman, or even as a showroom manager, but more like a friend lending a hand, giving honest advice. So my suit arrived yesterday, and it somehow exceeded my expectations. It fits like a damn glove, and honestly, better than anything I've ever owned. I know I've read in magazines like GQ that a suit should feel comfortable and you should feel comfortable in it, etc, but this is the first time I can truly say I feel that way. It's been one day, and I already want another one! I almost forgot to mention that it's extremely affordable if you need it to be. I'm working within a budget (this suit is just a drop in the bucket of mounting wedding costs) and this suit seriously looks like it cost two grand. I couldn't be happier. A month ago I visited the showroom with a female client who will be marrying her soon-to-be wife in the spring. She had asked me to refer her to a tailored suit house where she could have an outfit customized and I immediately recalled a chance meeting I had with Hayley Maybury, who at the time had been the showroom manager. I've shopped here and at similar competitors. I purchased a shirt, trousers, and have just placed another order for another pair of trousers. A few thoughts: 1) Shirt fits well but isn't fantastic quality and seems to get wrinkled very easily. This could be because of the fabric I chose, but after one wear the sleeves are completely wrinkled (near the elbows) and the shirt cannot be worn un-tucked because the bottom gets very wrinkled and almost flares out like a dress... I probably won't be getting another shirt here. 2) Trousers are fantastic and well worth the (somewhat) high price tag. Best pair of pants I've owned (compared to other custom clothing, expensive suits, etc.). They seem to be very durable and don't wrinkle very easily so are fine to wear multiple times without dry cleaning. So while the shirt was a miss, the trousers are more than good enough to make up for it and will have me coming back for more. One final note - $20 for shipping a pair of pants is a slap in the face after the high price tag. Also, if you are ordering something for the first time it needs to be shipped to the store to see if alterations are necessary. Paying $20 to have clothing shipped to its own store is absurd and almost makes me reduce this review from 4 to 3 stars. read more

Impressed with the whole experience here. I came in with my fiancee to get a wedding suit, and we were immediately greeted by a friendly Neil and offered some (nice quality) bourbon- a nice way to start any experience IMO. Neil took us through the whole process, listened to what we were looking for, made some good suggestions on fabric and cut (so many options!), and never gave a hard sell. The measuring system here is pretty high-tech and accurate, and the resulting suit ended up fitting almost perfectly when it came in, just needed a bit of shortening on the jacket which was completed within a week as promised. Start to finish, we felt taken care of and listened to, and my fiancee actually enjoyed shopping here (something I've never seen before). The resulting suit was well-made, sharp-looking, and just what we were looking for, and although not cheap, it's totally worth it to get something of quality that is actually made for your body and to your specifications. Will update on the wear and fit of the suit after the wedding, but we have high hopes.... read more

My husband loves coming here to get custom things made. He always has a hard time finding clothes that fit him correctly without get the item tailored. The environment of the place is awesome. You get a nice view of Newburry street while enjoying a cocktail at there in house bar while looking at fabrics. I suprised my husband taking him here for an early birthday present. I've bought several pants and 10+ shirts from Alton Lane, and had a few friends plus my brother use them. Bottom line is they are priced on the higher end of the mens custom market but provide quality / service at the lower end. I've ordered shirts before that don't quite fit right and when I go in the store to adjust them, the staff (e.g., Hayley) gives me attitude and questions what's wrong with the fit (even when there are clear problems). Not sure if he is still there, but Neil was really good. Their orders come in inconsistent, so even once you lock down the sizing it seems to change from order to order. And their fabrics are totally hit or miss. The last straw for me was my brother ordered a custom suit for his wedding and they botched the fit and then couldn't make updates in time for his wedding. They were unapologetic and acted like there was nothing wrong with the fit. They have done this exact thing with me before, standing there straight faced pretending it fits great when clearly it doesn't fit like custom clothing. I've tried many mens custom clothes companies (e.g., Indochino, Black Lapel, Knot Standard) and Proper Cloth is the best by far. Even though they were completely online for me (no locations in Boston), they got my fit down perfectly in two orders and their service / policy / quality / consistency is superb. All orders have been spot on and their website is awesome. Ditch Alton Lane and try Proper Cloth. read more

The good: Attentive staff, good communications. The tailors were good after I received my suit and needed some large revisions in both the jacket and the pants and I couldn't tell where seams had been resewn. This is a truly custom shop - nothing comes off a rack and there are lots of customization options for buttons/piping/surgeon's cuffs. To note: This is a basic product at a luxury price point. It is certainly expensive, but the quality of the fabric and suit pales in comparison to top brands like Trussini. The staff can be pushy (and this has increased recently under new management) - they want you to buy their packages / extra shirts etc. They'll tell you not to wear the suit without those other options and make it seem like they won't be offered later. Great idea and showroom, but so-so execution and product... Seems like a gimmick. Had two suits, a pair of pants, and five shirts made over the course of a year. In spite of all of their measuring and the body scanner thing they use, the suits needed significant alterations after they arrived over a month later. I have had custom clothing made previously, and this experience was really disappointing, even after several visits. The finished orders are sent to your home (by the way, you have to pay for shipping, which seems out of line with competitors), and arrive minimally packed and wrinkled. You will need to have it pressed before wearing... If it fits. For me, it took hours of calls, emails, and visits to the store for just a suit I could have had from Brooks Brothers in a fraction of the time. It should also be noted that the shirt cuff and collars are extremely stiff, more so than any other shirt I have had, making it a pain to button. I just see no advantage over well-sized slim-fit off-the-rack shirts for less time and money. I have to imagine that the tailoring is outsourced overseas given the timeframe for delivery... I'd rather have a better product, for less, altered at a local store. read more

The service at the shop is impressive and they give you the impression that they know what they are doing. Alton Lane brags about offering a premium product but they are a load of crap. They surely do charge premium prices which are not warranted judging by the quality of service. The suit takes 8 weeks to make. A couple days after I went to get measured for a $2300 suit, I asked for them to change my extra pants order but that I still wanted the suit. They said that they couldnt do it and that all orders are final. After some nonsensical discussion they said the best they could do was give me a 75% refund for the extra pants. I am now stuck with the fury of having about $300 thrown in the trash and am awaiting a suit that will remind me of the mistake I made 2 months ago. All I wanted was store credit for the extra pants as I intended to buy another suit. I should also mention that I sent 2 emails to customer service about this issue, only to be ignored. A few minutes before my first email I asked for an invoice from the same email address and got a response within the day. They seem to be intentionally ignoring customer requests. This place has great reviews which is why I bought from them in the first place, but they are clearly not interested in pleasing their customers. It should take more than a glass of scotch and sportscenter to convince you to buy a $2000+ suit. read more

It's nice to have an idea of what you are looking for in a suit, shirt, pants, etc. but it's also great to have an expert guide you through some of the very specific details when it comes to custom clothing. Hayley and Neil are amazing at this! They are extremely knowledgable about all things fabric related as well as what styles work for specific occasions or what is popular or trendy. The shopping experience here is second to none! Oh, whatever you order, (suit, pants, shirt) you will find that it fits perfect. Don't let the prices scare you. These clothes will last a very long time. You end up spending just about the same for crappy shirts and suits that you need to buy every year anyway. I had a great experience with Neil, Hayley and Alton Lane. I was sick of buying suits off the rack, having them tailored and at the end of the day they still didn't look good. So I gave them a try. I made an appointment for a fitting and it went great. It took about and hour , it was very relaxed, and I even got to have a beer! Besides a perfect fit though, its very helpful to have an expert guide you through the customization to help you choose fabric, style, what would be office appropriate vs more casual, etc. I wish the turnaround times for the suits were a bit quicker, but I was very happy with the final product so I recently went in again for a 2nd order. Their service is fantastic and extremely personalized. Overall I think their suits are a good value considering the quality and perfect fit ( and they weren't that much more that what I was paying for off the rack suits) I'll definitely be in again! read more

This is what it looks like after wearing it once. It's torn to shreds. They refuse to replace this product. The atmosphere isn't at all comfortable and Leo who I talked to is very rude, I'm not sure how he became the showroom manager. They offered to put me in touch with a tailor who could repair the tie. I had a phenomenal experience with Alton Lane. My grandfather bought me a gift card to the Boston store for the holidays after hearing they were one of the best in town, and they sure lived up to the expectation. It was a pleasure working with Neil throughout this experience, he was super down to Earth, very prompt with his email reminders, and helped identify some great fabrics. They have a 3D body scanner in the store, and offer all their customers beer/whiskey before the fitting. The shirts I received were fantastic and fit perfectly. Over the past few years, I have grown so sick of buying slim fit shirts off the rack, and I have full confidence that I will be returning to Alton Lane again for some more purchases (though they will be sporadic due to the price tag). read more

Alton Lane has changed that for me, they make the all around experience incredibly pleasurable. Also, I should mention I have never had a custom suit until now, not going back to rack...like, ever. It is a very thorough process the first time ordering suit, they put you in a 3D body scanner, then measure you the old fashioned way, just to be sure. Once you are in their system any future purchases are as easy as walking in and picking out what you want to buy and leaving all with in 10 minutes. I started with a shirt, now I have 8 shirts, and 2 suits. This place is the real deal and actually a fun place to hang out while you shop. I made my first appointment and purchase yesterday from Alton Lane in Atlanta, and it was a wonderful experience. With very little notice, I requested to change my appointment time and date, and Katie in customer service was able to help me very quickly and easily with no hassle. It's nice calling a 1-800 customer service line and getting an immediate response; in fact, she picked up so quickly, I thought I had dialed my local store. The Atlanta store is managed by Robert, and I could not have been more pleased with him and the overall experience. Robert was extremely accommodating, patient, and helped me throughout the entire process. He was very sociable, friendly, and I never felt pressured by him to make a purchase, which is much different than my previous suit buying experiences elsewhere, and he didn't try to up-sale me on something I didn't want which was also refreshing. In summary, my first visit to Alton Lane will not be my last, and I was very impressed with their overall business model, made to order suits made possible by their 3D camera mapping technology, comfortable showroom experience, affordable price points, and extremely friendly & knowledgeable employees like Robert. read more

Alton Lane is great because you show up, have a couple of beers, and Hayley (all star employee) or a colleague fits you with a full body scan and some measurements. She's also very helpful choosing styles and colors for the fashion impaired like me. Then they send you your shirts. If anything goes wrong, the customer service is great (shout out to Raul - super helpful). The only drawbacks to speak of are: a) the shirts take 6-8 weeks to deliver. b) the cost, while reasonable, is still significant (this is not Joe Banks). We spent hours on the phone with Alton Lane ordering a tuxedo, shirts and accessories, and paid $1313 in full more than two months before a family wedding. Here we are, a week before the wedding: no tuxedo, no answers to multiple emails and phone messages. For the same wedding, we had the groom and the groom's father place orders for their full morning coats, trousers, and all accessories from tailor on Saville Row in London- those suits arrived in California two days later, made perfectly of beautiful fabrics, for half the price of Alton Lane. These guys know how to make fine clothing. I order two suits and two black label shirts. I will be frank, after having a personal tailor who traveled to Italy every year to pick out material and who studied design in Europe, I was confident he would be hard to beat... I'm happy to report - I was WRONG! The suit I received was flawlessly made. I didn't get the lowest grade, but I also didn't drop $5k on a suit - middle of the road, higher end suit was perfect - fit and style. The white shirts I ordered were the high end shirts and fit flawlessly... Everything I wanted in a shirt and more. Literally, this thing fit like it was made for me... Oh wait, it was! I urge you... Why pay 90.00 at banana republic when you can pay 120.00 and have a shirt that literally is built for you. Oh... And by the way, they treat you to bourbon and beer while you pick your materials...
