My husband and I had found a place with no brokers fee in Cambridge. We were excited to cut some costs, but the place was by no means somewhere we saw ourselves for more than a year. Feeling stressed and defeated, I called Mark after seeing some incredible apartments through him a while ago. I told him our budget and listed all the features of our dream home...something bigger with a separate home office, back yard, and porch. He delivered on the most beautiful home and as most of his listings are through his long-time friends, he was able to really get it within our budget (somewhere between a $400 and $700 discount from market value). We were happy to pay a brokers fee for the incredible value he provided (we would not be able to find a house in Boston that we love for this low amount on our own). Last year, I used a broker who had a lot better "bedside manner" as someone put it. She came from a large firm, and she was polite, calm, and wore suits. Mark rented me 4 apartments over the years that I lived in Boston. All of them were spectacular, Back Bay steals, significantly below market price, and offered on flexible terms. Part of what makes him so good at what he does is his guerilla approach to the apartment market. He has visibility on places before they come up that a lot of neighborhood realtors just lack. People who take his abrasiveness personally are missing the point about how he operates -- trying to quickly ferret out serious renters from the mass of traffic that flows through every day. Mark could appear a little bit "harsh" and some could get confused after the first phone call. But believe me, one word can also describe his work : Efficiency. We visited two ALMOST similar places, and he gave us the time to chose, while he asked the owner about our concerns regarding the rent. After helping us bargaining the rent, we got de keys the next day, and half a month free. Finally, why is Mark efficient? I spent one afternoon with this guy when I was apartment hunting back in 2006. He was such an over-the-top jerk. He was like a bad caricature of a jerky used car salesman. Like, I seriously didn't believe that people this obnoxious existed in the world. When I arrived at his office, I had to wait while he finished up with the client ahead of me. I sat in his waiting area for a few minutes, then the girl stormed out, tossing obscenities behind her. Once I had my own opportunity to meet with Mark, I understood why. I can certainly echo the sentiments of the reviewer who complained about being treated like an idiot and a child, but what really bothered me wasn't the way he treated me, but the way he treated his assistant. He had a college kid (Berklee or NE Conservatory, can't remember which) working in his office, and this kid was AWESOME. But Mark treated him like complete dirt. To be fair, I never actually saw any of the apartments that Newman and Co. listed. So why am I posting a negative review of them? Between my wife and I, we called them five times: Call #1: My wife spoke with a very nice lady who took her information, told her that we should be able to see the apartments we had called about on the following evening, if we called back the next afternoon and asked to talk to Amanda. So we called the next day. And that's when things went to pot. Call #2: My wife was told abruptly by an unnamed gentleman "I'm busy, call back in an hour" Call #3: My wife was told abruptly by the same guy "I'm still busy, try again in half an hour." It made her feel like we were calling to ask him a favor or something, instead of calling so that we might pay him large sums of money to unlock a couple of doors for us. Call #4: The gentleman finally deigns to talk to her. He takes down most of the same information that was given the previous day, despite the fact that she had asked for Amanda. Then when it came time to make an appointment to see a place, he got annoyed at her when she tells him that we'd prefer to see apartments after business hours. They fail to make an appointment and the call ends with my wife confused and upset. Call #5: So I try one last time--we really do like the look of two of their listings. Some guy answers the phone with a simple "Hello?", with a tone that says I've just gotten him out of the shower instead of called a place of business. I asked for Amanda, was told that she was busy, and left my number. No one ever called back. By far the most frustrating experience I've had with a real estate agent. If they treat all their clients that way, I'm shocked that they manage to stay in business. read more

I just signed a lease on an apartment that was represented by Newman & Company and can honestly say that it was one of the most excruciatingly painful processes I've ever been through in my entire life. Mark Newman answers all of the phone calls that come in to the office, however, it nearly impossible to keep him on the phone for more than 60 seconds. He's extremely short and rude, usually telling you to call back at another time, and then often hangs up before you even have a change to reply! Basically he makes the customer feel like they are an unwelcome inconvenience in his day. The most incredible part is that the website says they have been in business for 30 years! This is truly unbelievable considering how they treat their customers. Writing Mark Newman a realtor fee check for one months' rent was one of hardest things I've ever had to do. There are so many realtors in the Boston area who will bend over backwards for their customer so I see absolutely no reason to do business with Newman & Company. read more

If he does, deal with his ridiculously harsh nature becuase in the end you'll end up in a great apartment for a great price with a stellar landlord. There is a soft spot in my heart for this scrappy Boston realtor. I've rented two apartments through him (he has a lot of listings in East Cambridge) and both times he's fought to get us into places. "These girls are top notch...top notch," he'll tell the landlord in a frantic voice. "I'll write up a lease right now." He's super intense. Like the other folks have mentioned, you definitely have to keep on top of this guy. He always tells you to call him back. Always. I can see how he may rub some people the wrong way but I honestly appreciated his straight-forwardness. You may not get a please or thank you, and he may hangup on you mid-sentence once or twice but the man is about business and getting it done. I much prefer a transparent approach than someone who is going to kiss your a$$ and blow smoke all day and then when they hangup the phone or close the door it's a dif story. Newman and Company is the best. I looked at apartments through a few other realtors but no one matches Newman and Company. The owner, Mark Newman, is pretty intimidating at first but he has the best apartments in and around Boston. He shows you only apartments in your price range and he really works hard to get you a great apartment. Newman and Company just did a great job helping me get a fabulous South End apartment for a friend moving to town. After telling Mark what I liked and didn't like about the apartments I had already seen with other brokers he was able to show me three apartments which met all of my requirements exactly and I am pretty picky. The lease signing was fast and I got my friend locked into an awesome place in one day. The move-in also was well handled. I called Mark and he told me to meet him on the corner. After watiing a couple minutes I called him and he said he will be there in 10 min. I was standing in the cold for half an hour then called him again to say that you can't leave people standing in the cold for 30 min. He then told me that I will have to pay 3 months rent for this place do you have the money. I told him you should have said that before I came up here. If I could give negative stars, I would. Mark Newman is extremely rude and unprofessional. He does not know how to run a business or understand social graces. In line with all the other reviews, he always tells you to "call him back" whenever you call, never gives a straight answer and ALWAYS and gives you the run around. If you are looking for an apartment I would NOT go through him. It's more pain and aggrevation than it's worth. Stay Away! Had to call three times before they would even see me (driving in over an hour) and should have known then to avoid them. As I showed up, he burst into a *temper tantrum* (this guy is way too old for that sort of thing) so he left for ten minutes to "cool off". This left me and other potential renters waiting, so we heard his employees chatting openly about how sick they are of his temper tantrums, etc. They clearly are much better at his job than he is (were forced to point out to him numerous times where to find information on paperwork, etc). Then, after waiting for half an hour, I was finally shown photos of the apartments -- told to wait again while he yelled at employees -- and when we finally went to look at two that I was interested in, he turned around before we left the building AND REFUSED TO SHOW ME THE APARTMENTS when I said I would not be able to make a decision before tomorrow. Then he started yelling at me about how he would have all these apartments rented by this weekend. Well, good luck getting them rented, but hopefully not to the reader of this review, because this guy is the worst. read more

Let's face it - the Boston rental market is brutal and demand for decent places far outstrips supply. Brokers are busy - they generally have the advantage of knowing someone else will take the place if you don't want it, and can often afford a 'take it or leave it' attitude. And considering it's a commission based livelihood, that's especially true for most of us looking for lower priced rental properties (= lower commission). Granted, that's no excuse for lackluster customer service in general, but it does mean you'll run across plenty of brokers with little time and lots of attitude - it's just reality. I dealt with Mark to get my rental property, and had no problems with him. If he isn't holding your hand and spending lots of time on the phone it's because he's just hustling and trying to get things done. His communication style is straightforward, but he was always responsive to me during the process, worked with my schedule, and helped to move things along quickly, which I equate with good customer service. So if your bottom line is about finding a place, and you're less concerned with becoming best friends with your broker during the process, give Mark a call and see what he can do for you - he helped to get me a great place. read more

Last Saturday, I found a listing for a 3 BR for a great price. It was listed by Newman & Company so I called him to inquire about it. So he told me it was being renovated so he couldn't show it yet. He did tell me it was on the first floor which made me determined to get it so he told me to call him back in an hour. He said he couldn't reach the landlord so call back in an hour. He talked to the wife so call back in an hour. He told me to call back tomorrow at noon. I called this afternoon and that's when his assistant told me it was a third floor apartment and he'll call me back in an hour. I asked to speak to him for a couple of minutes and that's when the assistant hung up on me. I called back and Mark answered the phone and he made it sound like he wasn't doing me any favors when I said I was willing to come up with the realtor's fee any possible way. But since it was on the third floor, I didn't want it anymore. He said he didn't want to deal with me because I was too aggressive. I wasn't aggressive, I was persistent. He was the one who kept telling me to call back in an hour. I just followed his instructions. read more
