I wrote my last review of Donna and her shop three years ago, and after seeing a couple recent negative reviews, i thought it was time for an update and rebuttal. Needless to say, I'm still a loyal customer and have never been disappointed with a haircut or beard trim in all my years of going to Donna, dating back to her previous location that was less convenient than her current one directly on the ocean side of PCH. I have always found Donna pleasant and accommodating, not that she can magically make appointments on short notice - she's popular and busy...duh. Why wouldn't she be? She has a clean and well-located shop, she knows what she's doing and her prices are quite reasonable considering what her rent must be on PCH in Corona Del Mar. She's also very easy on the eyes, if anyone is allowed to notice such things anymore. I'm a harmless semi-old man now, so perhaps it's OK....lol You can't please all the people all the time, but I also wonder about the motivations and attitudes of those that write negative reviews. Perhaps a look in the mirror would be informative for them? For me, I'm just glad Donna and her shop have managed to survive the "Pandemic". That's says something right there because many good businesses have not been able to do the same. read more

Donna provides a full-service haircut: Scissor cut, wash, neck trim with razor and additional extras if needed (sideburns, bushy eye brows, etc). I tried out several barbers in the area before I determined Donna was the best (confirmed by my wife). You might pay a little bit more, but you get what you pay for! read more

Took my son to Donna. Called first to make the appointment and she just curtly said, "book online." No pleasantries when we got there, either, and no attempt to make an 8-year-old feel comfortable before beginning. She literally has a sign on her mirror that says, "no personal questions". It might as well have read: "no talking." Figured the cut would be good based on the reviews but despite me giving her specific instruction and repeatedly telling her she was going too short she just kept cutting. Bye bye surfer 'do, hello military. Two stars for the decent short cut (fine if that was what we had asked for!). Won't be back and am really confused by the good reviews here as well as why someone who doesn't want to interact with people would want to cut hair for a living. read more

Nice place, horrible haircut. I asked for a trim up top that left 2in, he started off well and then just kept cutting and cutting until there was only 1in left. I had to ask for him to stop cutting because it was way shorter than I wanted and he said he was making it even. Overall to expensive and not what I asked for in a haircut. read more

I called in and booked an apt 2 hours beforehand. I arrived 15 minutes early, they sat me within 10 minutes. My barber was Jeff. He was very attentive to my confidence in the haircut the whole way, stopped several times to make sure I liked the length. That's something you rarely ever see in barbers these days. Feel of the barber shop was Very casual, everyone was smiling, laughing, or engaged in some unbeknownst man-cave conversation. The bathroom was roomy and clean. Every once in a while you need to treat yo' self to a little pampering in the form of some beard lovin' cleanup. Donna and Newport Barber fit that bill PERFECTLY. I was in town for a family function and needed to look my best. Since my trip was absolute last minute, I couldn't get in to see my stylist at home before my trip. A few yelp searches and a quick phone call later, I was in to see Donna on relatively short notice and was definitely taken care of. A nice haircut and beard trimming were in order, so going off of my (horrible) descriptions, Donna was able to give me a top notch cut and make some suggestions for trimming up my beard. Everyone knows when you move there are essential things that you have to find. Doctor, dentist, cleaners, and of course a barber. Lucky for me I found a gem in Newport barber. Finally... The haircut I've been trying to get! I keep bouncing from barber to barber and fancy stylists all around the area trying to get someone to help me get the look I've wanted for some time. There've been some good ones, but never as great as what I got from Tanya! At first, I thought she did a great job-but then thought maybe I just got lucky. But after the second time, I know now I'm gonna work with her as long as she's around! Also, I hadn't tried it before, but because I already trusted her, she talked me into a shave. It was incredible! She is gentle and even informative telling me a lot about shaves that I had no clue about. I'll get one every time I go in there now! Cliff notes are at the bottom if you're not into a good read. First I'll give you a bit of background. There is about half a dozen of us late 20s early 30s groomsmen & groom combo. We're a risky bunch when we're together and turns out we don't plan ahead well either. The motto of this group of guys is "I'm gonna wing it." and that's precisely what we did. We called about a dozen barbers to get our beards and necks/burns trimmed up the day before the wedding. The results? Well, we were called everything but a bunch of white guys and hung up on mostly. The word "crazy" was said to us time and time again. We were down and out; until we called Donna. After we became as charming as a bunch of southern democrats who can wheel and deal, she actually said she would open her store and hour early to get us all in. We were in, and we were in shock. Not only is Donna is easy on the eyes if you know what i mean ;-) but she trimmed us all up and we looked great for the big day. Extremely affordable too. She asked how I wanted my beard trimmed and I told her I wanted the "George Michael special" and she quickly dissuaded me. I'm glad I listened to her, otherwise I would have had a porn star-esque beard with a dangley cross earing at my buddy's wedding. Bride would have been pissed. Google image search George Michael and you'll know what's up. TLDR; Donna's professionalism, skill set, and business mindset not only earned our business but ensured that we will return when we're back in town. Highly recommended as we had great results and a great experience, minus the debilitating hangovers that we were battling from the previous night's debauchery, but that's a different review to write for ourselves. read more
