Went into Newtonville Books with an ice cream. A mouse ran across the floor and we gasped. Staff told us to stop "horsing around" and that ice cream isn't allowed. Good to know the store enforces stricter rules for customers than for rodents. read more

The vibe is super friendly. The staff is attentive and helpful . If they don't have what you're looking for they can order it for you , that's always useful . They have a large selection of lots of books in all categories. They have other cute things like candles , socks and reusable bags . The value is good for the environment and large selection. They have lots of parking metered or a lot filled with metered parking . So no worries on parking . Also don't be shy the vibe is very welcoming. Great value for your monies as well . read more

Cute, but small bookstore. There is plenty of street parking and the newton center lot right across the street. They have great books, but due to it being a smaller store they did not have all of books I wanted. They do summer reading things for children, which I think is great. The staff was helpful last time I went in as well. read more

Newtonville books is a cute little bookstore. Although it is small there is a large selection of books. They have a staff favorite wall which I really like. Each section felt very curated and thought out. You do have to wear a mask in here most of the time but they provide them if you don't have one on you. They have lots of nice stationary and cute little trinkets as well as books. It is very quiet and peaceful in here as well. Staff very friendly. read more

Excellent bookshop - they have good readings, invite engaging authors. The space is laid out cleanly and neatly, and the selection is first-rate. I'm also commending them for participating in the 1st Annual Indigenous People's Day, setting up a stall with expertly curated sets of books about indigenous peoples, ranging from children's books, to cookbooks, to more detailed histories. I wish I could have just brought a whole bunch of $ and bought the entire collection. read more

Mary Cotton just bought this place and every week she sends out a great email newsletter. She's doing incredible things with the small but expansive bookstore on Walnut St. The Books and Brews series (where you get free wine and beer!) has a great line up for such new, small indie store. I heard Lionel Shriver here in the back room, which makes you feel like you're in a old French country barn made out of stone...don't ask just go and see for yourself. Among other delights, the bathroom is decked out with quick, appropriately placed reading material and the Lizard's Tale is a great kid's section, which is really another bookstore of its very own. She has a community blog linked from the website which has many local event notices as well as literary criticsm and other arty things to do or see or read about. The collection of signed first editions and the first editions club are also great features. And finally, book groups can meet here, or you can join the official Newtonville Books book group OR take a one month writing class in fiction/memoir. It's a great store and great things are happening, I have no fear that they won't continue to do so. This is a great little bookshop. At first, I was incredibly confused. The name of the store is Newtonville Books, but it isn't in Newtonville. Weird huh? Well anyway, walking in was extremely pleasant. The store is beautiful. Modern, clean, small yet effective. Lots and lots of book throughout the front section, which is all windows looking out to Newton Centre and Langley, and the back is cozy, sweet, with lots of chairs and lots of books. Their was a children's section off to one side, and lots and lots of gifty items in the front of the store, all not too expensive and great ideas for birthdays or holidays. I will definitely be returning. This is one great, local bookstore, that is cozy & quaint, yet not as overwhelming as the New England Mobile Bookfair. Hidden at the beginning on Langley Road, in Newton Center next to Jumbo Seafood and Walgreens, directly off Centre Street. 5 stars. read more

I love this place. You walk in and you immediately have a home feel. I attended a book signing for Elizabeth Berg here and the room where it was held was simply neato! Brick exposed walls, an old fireplace, and upstairs I could here people singing, dancing, and playing musical instruments. To some this may have been a bother but I enjoyed it.....It was like having some background music while my favorite author was reading an excerpt from her new book. I love that this is an independent bookstore and not a commercial book store. The location is ideal, about 5-10 minutes off of the mass pike (depending on traffic). The weekly new letter that I receive from the store is fun and filled with information on new book releases and future book signings. They have shelves and shelves of books, a great movie selection (based on books made into movies only) very modernly priced. The children's room is wonderful, warm, and inviting. Staff very nice and helpful. Can't wait to visit again....maybe for the books and brews series. ~J read more

Independent bookstore with a mellow vibe and nice staff. Small enough to feel comfortable, but large enough to find the perfect book with which to curl up in a leather chair by the fire. New books are in the main section, and used books in a separate room. It's open until 9 p.m. many nights, which is great since the *other* local independent store closes at 7-- Offers quite a few author readings, which I hope to attend at some point. This is a super cute little bookstore that also has a small reading area. I came in here while waiting for a table at one of the nearby restaurants in Newton Center. It was a great place to browse and look around at all of the books that they have. I loved that they had little staff recommendations next to books on the shelves. They also sell little knickknacks, as well as clothing, gifts, and other themed items that I'm sure book lovers or stationary lovers would love to get. I think sometimes book clubs meet here, but otherwise, it's a nice, clean, cozy store. read more

This is the cutest lil bookstore in Newton. They have everything from non-fiction to fiction, travel guides to murder mysteries and all in between. The setting in this bookstore is cozy and welcoming and its the perfect place to just browse the shelves and read for a while, and of course buy any books that peak your interest. I also believe that they have community events as well, which makes this place even better! There's a craft section for the kids (which I have used myself if I'm being honest) and little trinkets and souvenirs that are perfect for gifts or collections. This place is the best and it's such a hidden gem in the Newton Center area, it's tucked away on a corner and I'm so glad I stumbled upon this place one day when I was walking around. read more

I usually love independent book stores, and it saddens me to negatively review a local business, but the customer service here is terrible. At chain stores, they may treat you anonymously, but at least they don't treat you badly. I've had an employee complain that my kids were playing with the children's books (the horror!) and have had sales clerks be difficult about returns when I had literally just bought the book and changed my mind shortly after. I would say this has all the negatives of an independent book store (high prices), and all the negatives of a chain store (bad service). This independent bookstore is part of the Newtonville shopping strip on Walnut Street. They have an appealing selection of books, including a reasonably sized children's section, and will order anything. They also foster a community with an active website, email newsletter, and regular events such as "Books and Brews". (I've never been, but I imagine it to be a bit like the bookstore reading in the movie "Crossing Delancey" - it's probably much less stuffy however.) I buy from Amazon because it's easy, but I also come here because it is local, and if I spot a book I want I buy it from Newtonville Books (since they suggested it!). read more

I really love this book store and it's almost impossible for me to walk in here without coming out with something impulsively. Kind of turned off by the fact that with their one stamp per $20 you spend incentive, I wasn't able to get a stamp for spending $19! think it's a little scroogey. Super independent bookstore. They host great readings by all types of authors and have a terrific childrens program the Lizard's Tale. Sign up for their weekly email and you can see they variety of events they offer. They had a 10th anniversary program this weekend with Richard Russo and Tom Perotta reading. My niece loves the summer reading list program and says she once she has read the books I have sent her thru this program she is able to trade them for candy at overnight camp.
