They had a great selection of book ,(some of which I am already familiar with and others that I need to go back to get) They are non profit in the true sense but do accept donations to help pay for rent and stuff. I always find it refreshing when I see establishments like this nestled between the starbuck's and the gap's. I just hope this one manages to stick around. They always seem to disappear so quickly.

The young people help run the store, learn job skills, and work toward personal and career goals--and it truly shows in the care and pride behind the space. The shop itself is small but mighty. I walked out with four excellent-condition used books (three of which had already been on my TBR list) and somehow also added two cookbooks because... no regrets. Everything was very affordable, and it felt good knowing my purchase was directly supporting youth in the local community. If you're near one of their locations (I believe there's another in the Boston area), I highly recommend stopping in or checking out their online storefront. What I love most about the Frugal Bookstore is their collection of BIPOC children's books. I love knowing that the books that I buy for my nieces and nephews will feature BIPOC characters and stories. Thanks to these books, they will grow up seeing representation and knowing that diversity and inclusion is normal. Most of the books at the Frugal Bookstore are written by BIPOC authors or feature BIPOC characters and issues. There are also a few small gift items and calendars. The store is pretty small but packs a big punch. It's well-organized, clean and usually overseen by Nia, the owners' daughter. She's really welcoming and friendly. She got me into Sister Souljah's books! I'd want people stopping by to know that the hours are kind of limited. I sometimes kill time at the nearby Dudley Cafe before heading over to the Frugal Bookstore. Also, the front door can stick and requires a good pull/push to open. Yep, the guy behind the counter, if he's white and older, is the one and only Skippy White. A…read morelegend of the local music scene (he actually was awarded a Boston music award), he's sold "black music" of myriad styles in the area for 40+ years. The man is generally pretty agreeable (not that easy with so much experience in retail!) and taking the time to talk to Skippy is well worth it--- he's a fount of information, and can remember label and release information far better than you could imagine. And he LOVES to talk food. If you spend enough time in the shop, you'll realize that it has a strong community aspect to it; regulars are popping in all the time and Skippy's ties to Boston's African-American community are substantial. He also does a weekly radio show called the Time Tunnel. Oh yeah, the music. A great spot for records, though they are very slowly getting into order. This is a great place for soul and blues oldies, as if Skippy doesn't have it on CD, he'll order it for you. He also sells a lot of gospel and modern Southern soul, and stocks some jazz. I recommend it more for CDs unless you like to dig a lot. But the counter is often the place to be, as Skippy can usually tell you if he's got what you're looking for.

He was willing to work with me on the price, which was very fair. I bought a stack of about 15-20 records for around $60. He's got lots of unique and some rare 45's of old soul music.
