I could have sworn I already wrote a review for this but alas, I guess not…read more I've been here a few times for fun and a few times for different book events. I will say that most of the staff is very nice and helpful! Usually all the time I come in and they're very chatty and friendly. The first book event I went to was a little disorganized. I think they need like signs or something to say, "check in at the register first". I think the staff was maybe confused and a little hesitant or shy to speak up which made navigating the event a bit frustrating. The second one I went to was better but was more or less because I knew the drill. Otherwise on a regular day it is always very clean and organized, they do have a small kids section which is nice. This location is small. There is minimal seating and I'll still go to the one in Montgomeryville to meet friends and have coffee. The rumor was they weren't having a cafe because Whole Foods was - but Whole Foods doesn't. It's small and tight and definitely more maze like to fit everything in. But they always have nice displays and it's usually pretty easy to find what you're looking for. The proximity to my house is the biggest convenience as before the only options were willow grove or Montgomeryville which also both are pretty traffic-y areas. I will also say , it's weird that the sign doesn't light at night. It looks like it's closed when it isn't.

I was initially delighted because it was so well organized and every section seemed to have a generous offering of books. The children's section was particularly large and had books for kiddos of all ages. My sister and I were also excited to snag Farley's Bookshop tote bags to rep this adorable store once we get home. As a bonus, the cashier was super friendly and eager to answer our various bookish questions.

We love a good independent bookstore versus buying from the big guys or ordering from Amazon, and we do what we can to help such shops continue to exist. This one, however, missed the mark in our opinion. This isn't somewhere you go if you have something specific in mind, in my opinion. This store is meant for browsing, as the collection is eclectic. I also wouldn't say you can find several new releases here. There are sections for most interests, which is nice. The store is small, which makes things feel cramped and squeezed in. It also hurts organization a bit. The man at the front desk was slightly cold and not particularly welcoming. Most folks seemed afraid to speak, the store being dead silent. Typically, the indie shops are welcoming and cozy, not stuffy and serious. Atmosphere was a bit off. Prices were fair. However, this is one of the rare times we couldn't find something to read in a book shop... It's not awful and not great, just average.

I simply love great rare books, collections of ephemera, and places that make you feel at home -- you get all this and more, here. Walk-ins aren't welcome just yet, so please call for an appointment, but once you visit it may become a routine like it has for so many others.. At the shop you'll find: over 60,000 items, specializing in 19th and 18th c. illustrated books, chromolithos, Philadelphiana, rare anthropology, early hermeneutics, Natural history, first editions, signed items, Beat lit, '60's material, unusual occult, erotica and esoterica. We have a vast collection of ephemera, art work (steel engravings, pouchoir, collotype), movie posters (of the 1940's - 50's) and a mass of important 19th c. bound periodicals (Oology to Archeology, Mathematics, Botany, Knitting), and 20th c. Art journals, Italian Fascist publications, etc., culled from Walter J. Johnson's liquidation, as well as a collection rare jazz records. And much more, just ask. Dave has been in business for twenty-five years in the incarnations of David L. Miller Rare Books, The Book Merchants, the Philadelphia's Riverside Book Fair and 30th Street Station Book Fair. In 1991 we purchased the business, name and stock of Samuel Kleinman's legendary Schuylkill Book and Curio Shop of 4207 Lancaster Ave., Phila. PA. Thanks for reading, and give us a call to check out the shop!
