We LOVE Next Generation Montessori. Our daughter was born in the height of Covid and stayed home with us and a nanny until she turned 2. So, we weren't sure how she'd adjust to preschool. Luckily, we found Next Gen - an absolute gem! They have an incredibly thoughtful approach to transitions and made her first school experience wonderful. We've been so grateful for the way they have cared for our daughter and all of the children like they are family. It is an authentic, loving, and nurturing environment. In her 2 years at Next Gen, she has grown socially, emotionally, and academically. Every day, she comes home excited to tell us about something new she's learned. We also love how flexible they are, working with families to make the school experience as great for the parents as it is for the kids. We are so grateful for the time we've had with Next Gen and will miss it dearly when it's time to move on.

Last day at Next Gen in August 2023.

Next Gen was the perfect school for my son. He attended there for 3 years. We started very early Pandemic when he was 3 and this school really helped form him into the amazing young boy he is today. Zara was so welcoming and loving and he loved every part of it. I wanted him to be in a more play-based environment since the pandemic really threw me off on how to raise a social and kind child. And he opened up so much once he started school. It was beautiful to see. Ms. Rose really changed my son academically too. He stayed there for TK and took part in the tutoring program. He went from not being able to write a single word to forming sentences! And he LOVED the extra time he got upstairs to learn more. He has a real joy for learning now. We started Kinder this year and his teacher has told us he's the top reader in his class and a super quick learner. I don't doubt that Next Gen was part of that. We miss it!

The sandbox play area. My kids loved it.

First of all, there are surprisingly few programs that offer care for kids under 18 months, so I really appreciate that they have an infant class. Our daughter started at 12 months and is now 19 months, and she has learned so much and flourished at GCS in that short amount of time. The school has consistently been incredibly accommodating and flexible to our family's needs. The teachers are genuinely sweet, warm, and caring, and it's clear how much they love the kids. Zara, the director, is wonderful -- so kind, personable, and lovely to interact with, and it really makes a difference to feel that level of care and openness from leadership. Our daughter loves her teachers and is clearly absorbing so much from her environment. Mrs Rose, the lead of the Koala class, has been so great! Our daughter will come home acting out or trying to sing songs she learned at school, and it's obvious that what she experiences during the day really stays with her. She also looks up to the older kids in her class, and we've been told she's gentle with the younger ones -- which is so sweet to hear. She's getting stimulation, structure, and social development that we definitely couldn't have matched or replicated at home. GCS has given her such a strong foundation during a really important stage of her life. Another thing I really appreciate is how thoughtful they are around food. GCS was one of the only schools we found that would refrigerate and heat up lunches, which made it much easier and more pleasant to prepare good, healthy lunches every day. We've since switched to their lunch program though, which offers a rotating menu of daily home-cooked, nutritious food -- and our daughter LOVES it. She regularly finishes her portions and asks for seconds. Sometimes you can smell the food cooking during drop-off, and it smells amazing! We are unfortunately transitioning out for reasons unrelated to our experience here, and it's so so hard to leave. I'm really sad about it. We are going to miss GCS and the community so much, and we're incredibly grateful for the care, growth, and love they've given our daughter. This place is a gem!

From day one, we felt the love, care, and intention behind everything they do. This school provides a nurturing, safe, and genuinely loving environment. Safety is our top priority: the children are closely supervised, the environment is secure, and it's clear how deeply the staff cares about each child's well-being. The teachers are incredibly(!)--I can't stress it enough--patient and intentional, never taking a one-size-fits-all approach. Our daughter is seen and supported as an individual, with teachers taking the time to understand her needs and personality. A special thank you to Zara, whose calm and caring energy has made a huge difference in our daughter's growth. Another thing we really appreciate is the school's teaching philosophy. They blend Montessori methods with Piaget's critical thinking principles to create a child-led curriculum centered around what they call the 5 C's--critical thinking, communication, compassion, creativity, and collaboration. While academics are part of the program, what matters most to us is how our child is learning. She's already developing strong problem-solving skills, learning to communicate her emotions, work through challenges, and care for her friends--skills that will serve her far beyond the classroom. At just three years old, our daughter knows her numbers and letters, speaks two languages, and is learning her third (Spanish). GCC is very supportive of multilingual families and offers language options like Armenian and Spanish. We're so lucky to have found this school. We know that our daughter is in a safe and loving environment where she's building a strong foundation. Highly, highly recommend!

Our daughter was a founding student at Modern Schoolhouse in Eagle Rock. She attended TMS from when…read moreshe was 18 months until she graduated as a 4-year-old (when our family moved from LA to Denver). It's difficult to capture the gratitude and appreciation we have for Sue and her team in words. Modern Schoolhouse was an integral, joyful part of our family's life for several years. The teachers expertly crafted a safe, nurturing, and rigorous environment that provided a strong foundation for our daughter to blossom and grow. I feel like we will always look back on our enrollment at Modern Schoolhouse as one of the best parenting decisions we've ever made. A few things stand out about TMS: CURRICULUM - Our daughter was enrolled in full-time childcare for a year prior to Modern Schoolhouse. However, it was unclear whether her previous caregivers were working toward any kind of goal (e.g., Kindergarten readiness) or if she was learning anything. That changed the instant we enrolled at TMS. I remember feeling skeptical when Sue asked us to purchase a special pack of flashcards. However, a few months later our 1.5 year-old daughter was recognizing the alphabet and making letter sounds at home. We were legitimately shocked! Preschool years are so important for kids to develop foundational skills and get broad exposure to different topics. Modern Schoolhouse delivers a learning experience that feels ambitious, but not forced. Our daughter was always engaged with the current unit (e.g., marine life, camping, etc.) and excited to go to school. That is the best feeling as a parent! The regular assessments and parent/teacher conferences helped us understand her progress and make a smooth transition to our new school in Colorado. CARE - At the same time that preschool aged children are exploring new academic concepts, they're also learning how to interact and play with other children. Modern Schoolhouse does such an excellent job helping their students communicate, manage their emotions, and engage with their classmates. At TMS our daughter learned things like how to ask for space and differentiate between good vs. bad choices. Teacher/staff transitions are inevitable and unavoidable in early childhood learning. What stood out to us about TMS was the quality and consistency of the team over the years and across classrooms. The teachers at Modern Schoolhouse helped us through the various ups and downs of life with a toddler and major transitions like potty training. Now that we're no longer enrolled at TMS, we're realizing that we took for granted how proactive and responsive the teachers were with their communication. The "ouch reports" from the playground, the quick responses to questions, it's all so important for parents - especially if this is your first childcare experience. COMMUNITY - Lastly, I want to highlight the broader Modern Schoolhouse community. Our daughter became very close with several other girls in her classroom and over time we became friends with their parents as well. TMS families are diverse, kind, and welcoming. I appreciated the music day potluck, annual art show, graduation, and the various other ways that Modern Schoolhouse brought everyone together to celebrate the students. Thank you Modern Schoolhouse! We will forever be grateful to you for the positive impact you had on our family.

Until the age of two, we were able to nurture his love of creativity through art, get him engaged in reading and music, and keep him active and independent while learning at home, but his social-emotional growth needed a community like Modern Schoolhouse to truly develop. We met another family at his favorite playground that had an AMAZING experience at Modern Schoolhouse and their daughter, who was academically gifted and raised with similar philosophies, was thriving under their care. We enrolled and discovered for ourselves that Modern Schoolhouse was indeed an absolute gem for child development. Our son entered after turning two, and he was very shy/reserved at the time. The talking, dancing, singing, bilingual artist that blew us away with his funny ideas and love of learning at home, needed help expressing himself in the larger group. Over the next several years, Leonardo was able to grow and thrive his ability to emotionally self-regulate, from having a 'safe space' at home to being able to identify what he was feeling and how to 'calm his body,' to listening to others and respecting common space. What we didn't anticipate was not just the top quality of the school, the clean aesthetic spaces, and the exceptional teachers (Teacher Alicia from class 3 was truly amazing!!), but also the like minded and kind community that became a key part of our son's social life. During our son's first years at home, we studied Montessori, Waldorf, and Reggio Emilia- instituting some principles of each in our approach at home. It wasn't until we met Sue and her philosophies at Modern Schoolhouse did we see some of these same philosophies embodied in an American child care setting; and we must have interviewed or toured at 5 or more local schools before finding Modern Schoolhouse. The core beliefs consist of the idea that children are competent, capable, curious individuals with hundreds of ways of self expression. The role of the school and family should be creating a structured, clean, and aesthetic environment that is conducive stimulating exploration and discovery. Teachers in this sense guide and foster collaboration rather than just 'delivering information.' Giving our son a new challenge was hard at first, but Sue and her staff were quick to offer suggestions and outside resources so we could reinforce some lessons at home, especially around his development of social/emotional skills like managing anger, dealing with disappointment, and learning to communicate when he needed space. He also was given the chance to learn how to build relationships and have positive interactions with new friends. Each 'season' and month had different themes that would be clearly delivered in monthly/quarterly emails along with chances to meet with teachers on child progress in key development areas of language, tracing, use of scissors, how to put on shoes/jackets, counting, class participation/listening, and emotional self expression. By class 3 (3 years old and above), our son was giving 'show and tell' presentations, using the 'sharing bee' to discuss their weekend, and playing inventive games to stimulate imagination and curiosity. Through the use of brightwheel, we were always shown photos and videos of our son having fun with friends and doing some fun activity. The school also offered many events at the school such as the "annual art show," "parent and me" day, and music sessions from Teacher Gaia culminating in a student led music performance (the cutest!). This year all the 4 classes made their own animal costumes and acted out various Disney themes. It was extraordinary to see him flourish and thrive under Teacher Alicia in class 3, who is truly remarkable for her ability to connect to kids and meet them where they are on the journey. By the end he was more confident in his presentations and even singing his favorite Disney songs Karaoke style to the class! Everything ended on a wonderful note with his graduation and small speech to parents and the graduating class. We were given an opportunity for a graduation photoshoot and his 'family book' with messages from all of the teachers as a keepsake that he created during his time there. As he graduated before many of the others in class 3, everyone created a special hand painted art for him with with the handprints of all his friends. It is bittersweet to go onto the next chapter, but he graduated school scoring high in every single metric of development, and he easily was interviewed and accepted into an international private school. Thanks you for being such a key part of his childhood journey and we hope to stay in touch with Leonardo and our growing family!

We toured a few preschools but we didn't want a home daycare and some of the more institutionalized schools were incredibly expensive. The Learning Place was a nice in-between where it was more structured than a home daycare but less expensive than a more institutional school. At around $1,000 a month for 7am-6pm program we thought it was a great deal. The school has a nice outside playground with shade and cushioning a nice little playground. In our time there they did upgrade the playground to have shade and padding which was nice. Inside it is very clean and they separate the kids by age. There are two doors between the outside and the school so it is secure. They have an iPad check in and check out system. We chose the Learning Place because the director, Ms. Enereyda (Ms. E) is incredibly warm and friendly. I can't say enough positive things about Ms. E. We also liked that she speaks both Spanish and English and we could chat with her in Spanish. The other teachers like Ms. Veronica and Ms. Melina are incredibly warm and friendly as well. We always had very positive interactions with the teachers. We always felt that our daughter was in good hands at The Learning Place. I initially signed her up here because I was working in Glendale. After a year I began work somewhere else but kept her at Learning Place even though we lived in Sherman Oaks. We liked this place very much. Overall - - I highly recommend the Learning Place. We loved our 2 years there.

We had lots of weekend bday parties with classmates One thing I especially appreciated was that each class had only about a one-year age range, so she was always with peers at a similar stage--never much older or much younger. So there were similar developmental and social skills among her classmates. She learned so much both from her teachers and from the other kids. Anytime challenges came up (whether with our daughter or with classmates), the teachers handled it with such care, patience, and attention.
