We wanted a surface that would be both stable under the specific conditions (directly up against the foundation of our house and next to the sloping retaining wall, but also more porous than the asphalt. Eligio and his crew did a meticulous job to make sure the ground was properly regraded to improve water flow away from the house while making the surface more porous (hence the wider spacing between the cobblestones. He also adapted the design so I could have some planting space between the wall and the cobble stone. We were impressed with the crew's diligence and efficiency. Given the particular challenges and materials we were looking for, I consider the price to have been very fair.

I found M&M Construction on Angi. We had a leak in the basement from our foundation. I called two…read morecompanies to get an estimate and M&M came in about a third of the price for roughly the same work, though their guarantee was about half (10 years) of the other company. Modesto and his sons were excellent--professional, prompt, detailed, and efficient. They sealed the foundation, installed a French drain, and buried the leaders so the gutters wouldn't deposit water along the foundation. They even replanted all of our shrubbery and laid down loom and grass seed to regrow the grass alongside of the house. They regularly communicated via text so I always knew what to expect. I later hired them to do interior work after a plumbing problem which they did once again with excellence. Modesto found the problem and suggested ways to mitigate future problems without trying to upsell me. This project involved pulling out sheetrock and finished carpentry, water mitigation, rebuilding walls, carpentry, and painting. Though it took them longer than expected because of the extent of the damage, he charged the same price that he had quoted. The work was excellent. This company will be on speed dial.

They showed up and showed out everyday until completion and minded their business :) Modesto is the head! He's very thoughtful about the way he does business. He's realistic with quotes and he's a dude with A TEAM that delivers!. He stayed connected to the job and us from start to finish. We gave them the freedom to play with the final design and they did an OUTSTANDING JOB on something that's so not exciting, typically! This South End based business first helped me with winter planting for my condo association's street side containers, and then next my own garden. Not offended by small jobs, they can also handle building a pergola, and complete redesign and planting of a yard. They've built flagstone walks and granite topped brick planters. Owner-designer Dan LaBarre knows his plants, and delivers gardens that look great the day he finishes up, and even better months later.

When the contractors rebuilt the back of our house, they put the precast stairs up on a concrete…read morepad that was about two inches higher than the rest of the surrounding yard. This meant that the final step was a much steeper drop off than the rest of the stairs. After futzing around with concrete pavers, we figured out what we wanted, and called Nauak to come and do the work of turning our kitbashed solution into something that would withstand New England winter. At the same time, we also needed to modify and improve the existing railing to make some mobility-impaired folks feel a lot more comfortable on the stairs while still allowing us to get snow off the steps. We wanted a pipe railing with no sharp corners and easy purchase to grab. At the same time, we asked them to put in a shelf next to the stairs for boxes, purses, etc, when going in and out of the door. They did a beautiful job. And once the concrete was set on the railing, they tested it, pronounced it excessively mobile, and came back to redo the anchors. My kids now swing through the space of the railing and it *does* *not* *move*. The shelf has been pronounced, "Brilliant!" by the person most in need of it. The splinters are gone from the original railing. And we will still be able to shovel snow off the steps without banging into the railing in the winter. Nauak does fantastic work, and they have pride in it to make sure they do it *right*. We will be hiring them again.

They were good about staying in touch with us over email during the week we were on vacation, so we knew what was up, which we appreciated a LOT - far too many contractors treat email like it's poisonous and communication like it's an afterthought. They were also nicely flexible when bluestone treads proved scarce (other contractors we'd contacted also had trouble getting firm quotes for them) and we asked about switching to granite in order to minimize delays. They did really good work - the new stairs are solidly built, to the plan we asked for, and look fantastic. The new railings haven't gone in yet (waiting on the company making them), but based on their work so far I have high confidence that they'll do a great job with the installation.
