But, a friend recommended Derksen Dentistry, and after some extensive (read: borderline obsessive) research, I decided to take the plunge. I needed an advanced root canal and figured, why not throw in a cleaning while I'm at it? The first thing that set the tone was my call to Susan. She was so calming and reassuring that I felt like I was calling a life coach, not a dentist's office. She promised me they'd make my visit as relaxing as possible, which is a tall order when you're about to face down a drill and some sharp objects in your mouth. When I arrived, I was promptly greeted (on time, too, which felt like an anomaly in itself). The assistant was super helpful, constantly checking in with me during the x-rays, which was nice since I was pretty sure my mouth was about to go on strike from all the poking. Then came Dr. Derksen. Now, I'm not the type to buy into "auras" or anything, but this guy had an aura of, "Hey, I've got this. You can relax." I felt it. He triple-checked to make sure I was completely numb before starting the root canal--because apparently, "feeling your teeth getting drilled" is not on anyone's bucket list. The whole process went smoothly, and to my surprise, I didn't leave feeling like I'd just fought a battle with a power tool. What really sealed the deal was that they followed up the next day to check on me. I mean, where else do you get a dentist who cares enough to make sure you're not secretly plotting your revenge on him for the trauma? Long story short, I walked out of Derksen Dentistry with all my teeth intact and a new, surprisingly positive outlook on dental visits. Squirted oral antibiotic on the tooth and sent him home. We had to get a prescription from our regular dentist, which took time. He wound up contracting septic shock and was hospitalized. This man never checked on him, never followed up. The oral surgeon who finally came to the hospital and took out the tooth said that, until the tooth was removed, the abcess couldn't be cured.

Take it…read morefrom me, a dental phobia-prone grown-up who drove around the block where Dr. Behnke's office was earlier located for three weeks before I could get up enough nerve to even go inside and inquire, when I first moved to town ten years ago. From that atypical perspective, I can honestly say, without hesitation, that I trust Dr. Behnke above any other dentist of whom I have ever been a patient. So that's saying something! She has always been forthright with what needs to be done, explains procedures along the way, and has gone out of her way to put me at ease. I think her authentic manner is key. Those working with her have reflected the same tone. I have recommended her consistently to those I know who are searching for a dentist. And I must also offer applause for Barb, the dental hygienist who has provided six-month cleanings for me for a decade, now -- for her careful, patient and gentle touch, and her ability to put me at ease time after time, all these years! I underwent a procedure to install a crown at the office of Midwestern Dental in East Lansing, MI…read more Midwestern Dental completed the procedure, billed Metlife, and was paid by Metlife. I paid the deductible. During this time, East Lansing Modern Dental took over the business. On 4/1/2022, I was contacted by East Lansing Modern Dental claiming that I had an unpaid bill for the above procedure, despite MetLife and myself having already paid the claim to Midwestern Dental. I sent them the Explanation of Benefits forms that I received from MetLife Insurance and told them that this procedure had already been paid for. On 7/12/2022 I was contacted by a debt collection company on their behalf. Currently reviewing legal options and awaiting further information after submitting complaints to the MI Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs and the MI Consumer Protection office.

I've had a similar experience to many others here…read more I underwent a procedure they told me would be covered by my insurance. I would not have gotten the procedure otherwise. After I received my procedure, they told me I had to pay out of pocket because my insurance did not cover it. I explained the situation to them multiple times that I would not have gotten the procedure if my insurance did not cover it. We spoke on the phone several times, saying they were going to resolve it and they would contact me. They seem to always forget that conversation and send me a bill every 3-4 months. This is wrong. Now they're telling me I have no other recourse but to pay up, or it will go to collections. Incredibly unethical.
