Tax time! Ick! As…read moremany of you who know me can attest, I am pretty DIY. I don't like to spend money on things that I don't have to. With this philosophy in mind, I did my own taxes for many years. It was a bit tedious, but things like TurboTax eventually helped remove some of the sting. However, a few years ago, my partner and I embarked upon the adventure of creating a shared LLC. In addition, we had been doing freelance gigs here and there -- things that don't fit as easily into tax-figuring as a standard jobby job. When we went to set up our LLC, friends who ran a small indie record label referred us to Jeff Stefforia. He was exactly the right person to work with. He is extremely knowledgeable, but also gets to the heart of the matter and is efficient in terms of time/meetings. He's worked with other indie and small businesses, and so seems to understand the quirks of that sort of client well. I also honestly appreciated that he didn't judge us on the fact that we had a business together but were not married. That sounds odd, but believe me, other people (who I feel have no right to judge my personal decisions) have questioned why I would have a business with my partner who is not my legal spouse. It was so refreshing to not have to deal with that! My own taxes this year were pretty straightforward, though I had to submit some extra info. for a housing credit. The very first workday after turning in all of my paperwork, I received a friendly email from Kim, one of Jeff's associates, asking for follow-up and a few pieces of information I missed. It was simple enough to find and send her the information, and I can breathe a sign of relief knowing that taxes are now out of my hands, into expert hands, and almost complete. With how insanely busy my partner and my own respective schedules are, Jeff and the rest of the crew at Stefforia & Associates have been a god-send. Saving us time, and ultimately, some money. I'm very thankful that our friends steered us in the right direction!

He knew the specifics of how to handle my educational forms and deductions (along with a retirement account problem that I bungled in a previous return). Sean capably prepared my personal return, which was a relief, because as a PhD student, the tuition/fellowship/scholarship/stipend/grant classifications are confusing. Doing it wrong could cost you. If you're a student in the area - or anybody, I imagine, who needs a responsive and knowledgeable CPA - don't hesitate to go with Arbor Accounting. By far the worst accounting firm I've ever dealt with…read more My taxes were not even difficult - a few W2s from different states and some simple investments. My previous accountants from NYC had no problem with them and always finishes it on time and accurately, and they have a lot more clients than Ann Arbor CPA. However, with this firm, I gave them sufficient time and they still had to file an extension because they can't finish what usually should take only a couple hours to do, which is OK I guess, I'll live with it. However - they miscalculated my MI return (by a good few hundred $) and in the end the good state of MI gave me back the money they miscalculated. On top of that - they didn't know how to handle any out of state taxes (particularly NY state tax rules), which I thought as professionals they should know or be able to research, and told me that my W2 was WRONG (which it isn't - I've confirmed with other professionals and my own HR department). I had to google answers FOR them when they could have just.... do a little freakin' research and figured it out themselves. Come on guys, I did not pay you to give YOU the answers. Needless to say, after the massive delays, miscalculations, and just straight up not knowing how to do simple taxes, I'm going to take my docs elsewhere in 2018.
