This is the most unprofessional organization I have worked with regarding tax preparation. We needed support and were dragged on for nearly a month with one excuse after another as to why it wasn't done. We deserved an honest admission of their incompetence in handling our taxes. I had an incredibly poor experience because they simply do not care about their customers. Getting answers was like pulling teeth and they give poor advice when they do provide answers. Their "advice" cost me thousands of extra dollars to the IRS. It literally would have been better to set my money on fire than to spend it on NHC's "services". For almost 10 years I have done my own taxes. However, being newly married I wasn't feeling up to navigating these new filing-jointly waters and decided to shell out the money for professional tax prep. I was really wary of going to a massive chain like HR Block and wanted to keep it local. NHC was one of the first places that popped up, they had the best website and good internet reviews. Man, they did not disappoint! I called to make an appointment on a Tuesday and they got us in the following Monday. We were greeted immediately upon arrival and led into the office of the gentleman who handled our return. We handed over our paper work, he asked us a few questions and we all made pleasant small talk as he worked. After 15 minutes he was done and he went off to make copies. He was gone for probably another 15 minutes, but it turns out it was because he had found us another $60 somehow. Um, THANK YOU. We were in and out in 30 minutes and left with a nice, healthy refund. We have a pretty basic situation - we're married, filing jointly; we both work and have student loans and we rent. They charged us $190 for the service, which may seem steep, but not when you consider that it saved me probably an entire afternoon of frustration and not really knowing what the hell I'm doing. Also, I know that he found money I wouldn't have that more than made up for the cost. All in all, if you're expecting to get a good amount of money back and you just don't feel like dealing with it yourself, I HIGHLY recommend NHC Financial. For a long time, I did my own taxes. I think that's usually the best way to go, with the help of TurboTax or whatever. But in the last couple years, things have gotten more complicated. I'm becoming middle-aged, basically, and therefore I have financial facets to my life that exceed my limited capacity to think about numbers. So, I decided to get help with my taxes, and I didn't really want to go to H&R Block and their ilk. So, I gave NHC a try. It was a couple hundred bucks, but that's only twice what I always ended up paying for the software (with state and federal). I consider this a good deal. I've been very pleased with Jim at NHC over the past two years. We've definitely gotten larger refunds than we used to when I was doing taxes with the software. I assume the software errs on the side of caution. But again, I don't really know anything about tax law, and I prefer to keep it that way. If you are looking for an honest, easy-to-deal-with local accountant, Jim at NHC is a safe bet. Don't let the appearance of the shop put you off. It's basically no frills, but how many frills do you want your account to have, given that you are the one paying for the frills? read more

As others have commented, I, too, used TurboTax in the past, only to discover a few years ago that when things get complicated, the commercial products fall short. Jim works carefully and thoroughly. He sends out a pre-interview questionaire packet which speeds up the meeting. As he works and chats, you can get your eye full of Michigan sports memorabilia and great pencil drawings. The office is in an expanded house; you walk directly into the old living room which is the reception. Jim's low key non-rushed style relaxes you during a very unrelaxing time. New Computer System this year (2015), total SUCKS. 10 days wait turns into 40 days. They don't communicate well including returning calls and follow up. Found a $1500 mistake they made to our return and no one caught it at their office. As of today still waiting to see if return has been sent yet, Very Unhappy. read more
