This year we had some significant life changes that surely would've impacted our taxes. I'd have done then myself otherwise, but we figured a competent CPA would make our lives a little less stressful. We were wrong. We made a 1 o'clock Thursday appointment with Pat Hanniford. When we spoke on the phone to schedule this appointment he was friendly but offered very little information beyond when to come to his office. I also had to ask HIM what informational tax materials to bring to our filing appointment. Shouldn't this have been something he began with? I didn't feel that he was very thorough in this regard and gave me a very loose idea of what he'd need. I took a half day off work and arranged for a babysitter for our afternoon appointment thinking it might be an hour or so. Running a few minutes late we showed up 3 minutes after 1 o'clock. Pat was nowhere to be found. His secretary, Kathy didn't know where he was and didn't bother to call him until we had already been waiting 10 minutes. Then she told us that he was on his way in thinking our appointment (the one that he personally scheduled) was for 2 o'clock. When we asked how far out he was they told us "maybe 4 minutes". That was a gross underestimation. We waited an additional 25 minutes, our first impression of this group growing less enchanting with each passing minute. We had a 2 month old at home that we had scheduled around so this was very inconveniencing, somewhat stressful, not to mention highly unprofessional. When he arrived he was over 40 minutes late for our appointment. Then the actual meeting took less than 5 minutes. We laid out our forms and paperwork, he looked them over, and told us he'd be in touch. Never being told how long the appointment would last nor that he could only devote 5-10 minutes to us, we felt rushed the entire 10 minutes. I later found out that I could've just dropped off the paperwork after work. The whole meet and greet with this office was abrupt and impersonal. So impersonal in fact that they didn't even bother to close the doors to the conference room we were in, allowing whomever to listen in on our personal business. Thus far, not impressed, but we decided to ride it out. At our meeting Pat had told us he'd have our taxes done by the beginning of that coming week. We never heard a thing until WE called at the end of that next week. We were then told they'd be ready sometime the following week. We never heard anything the following week again and began calling every few days leaving messages with Kathy for Pat but never getting a call back. Eventually I just emailed Pat who wrote back apologizing and scheduled us to come in to review our filing. When we arrived he was out of the office again, and came in late, giving us about 10 minutes of his time to review what he prepared. He left us with 1 of 2 options to file and we told him we needed to think about it and call with our directive early the following week. Come the next week and after 3-4 unreturned phone calls to Pat with questions we needed answered, I eventually just went to his office. He of course was not there again but "he's on his way in and he'll be here in 5 minutes" was repeated a few times by Kathy while we waited. (Be aware that this is a habit with this guy, and that his office always always says "he'll be here soon" - Plan on waiting for him every step of the way) . He actually wasn't in the office ANY of the 4 times that I or my wife went there to speak to him and didn't return a single message we left with Kathy. As it's all said and done now, I'll steer clear of this group in the future. Customer service was nonexistent and common courtesy is a reach here. It would seem that either their clientele is the weathered Brighton establishment, not considering a younger generation of client worth extending courtesy to, OR, they're just fundamentally inconsiderate. read more

So I was recommended by my boyfriend who has Pat do his and his parents taxes every year. I'm not sure if Pat is more available for them because they are one of his bigger accounts, but Pat has been very unresponsive to me. There have been multiple emails sent that he doesn't reply to, so I have to call him in order to get a response. He also charged my boyfriend $50 for my services and charged me $200. But to not respond to my emails for days and even weeks is so unprofessional. When I sent Pat my tax information he did get my taxes done very quickly. However, after he sent me a copy to review I sent him an email back asking if he could refile with my tuition expenses. He ignored this email for weeks to the point where I was worried about not getting the stimulus check if I didn't sign the form and send it back to him. I got my refund back and it was much lower than Turbo Tax estimated them to be (plus it would've been FREE to file with turbo tax). I then called him to ask if he could refile them with my tuition expenses. He agreed to do this two weeks ago and upon me calling me he said he had filed the return. I emailed him after asking if he could send a copy of the return so that I can enter my information into the IRS website to see when I can expect my return and it's been almost a week with no response when I know he's been in contact with my boyfriends parents within the past few days. Even though Pat completed my taxes very quickly, I will not be filing with him again because of the slow response time and inability to get a timely refund of the amount I expected based on my salary and expenses in 2019. read more

Ok so I'm writing a review of my accountant. How boring is that? Well, that's exactly what you want when your taxes are being done. You want it to be boring. No nasty letters in your mailbox from the IRS 5 months after you file. They have a team of people that goes over everything. When I get my taxes back, I can tell it's been checked over several times. All of the instructions on where to sign, what to mail are clearly noted. The first year I went here, I brought them a mess that took 10 months to unravel. They stuck with it until it was cleaned up, and even though it cost more than H&R Block, I know it was done right. Here's to another year of boring paperwork. read more

We had a really poor experience with this firm. We had our taxes done by one of their employees for 3 years. The 3rd year, the bill was over twice as much, so we contacted the accounted to get an understanding of the charges. He was offended when we asked for clarification of what he charges per hour (he had never shared that with us and since the bill had always been ok, we never asked). He refused to answer our calls and emails. When we reached out and asked for a planner for the following year, he replied that he wasn't going to send it because he didn't think we were still clients!! I eventually called the office, explained our situation, & paid the bill, but asked for a partner to call me back to discuss the misunderstanding and poor service from this single employee. My husband and I are both successful professionals and before I posted a negative review, I wanted to give the firm every opportunity to clear up any confusion. We never received even a phone call back. We hadn't planned to move our business, but felt we really didn't have a choice. This was possibly the most unprofessional thing I have encountered. The truly frustrating thing was that I originally thought it could be worked out with a simple conversation with one of the partners (I was hopeful that this was an isolated incident with the one employee), but when they didn't feel it was worth their time, that spoke volumes.
