While I've known of this store and the Piorkowskis for some time, it's only within the last year that I've become a customer. Both of my daughters have begun lessons here, on piano and guitar. The staff is extremely accommodating, matching the student with the most suitable instructor. They will ask if you're serious about formal training, or would rather take a more casual approach. They will also work with you to accommodate your scheduling needs. The current rate is $16 per half hour, which is very reasonable. Payment is due at each lesson. If you have to cancel and can give at least 24 hours, you won't be charged, and you'll be offered a makeup date if you'd like one. The joint is always jumping - there will likely be at least a dozen students across two floors. It can get cacophonous in the waiting room, but the energy level is inspiring. I might just take up some lessons for myself.

But they don't only offer lessons to children they offer lessons to adults too! It's not the same today, technology and the economy taking society away from live bands, but I see Thorold Music as finding a nice balance to keep the love alive, enough to make me leave my home town of Welland to make it there. I also respect Leo, one of Als' sons who manages the store, as a keyboard player, and every employee there has shown a mature and talented ability on guitar. I wouldn't necessarily say "Woohoo! We still have all the QRS piano rolls as well as some ancient rolls from a centryry ago and pump the player piano pedals and sing along with the rolls which have the words.. We had the old player piano electrified and just turn a switch also now. I am going to buy 80 QRS piano rolls this saturday to add to our library of QRS piano rolls. Good piano rolls.

Now, don't send me hate mail about the fact that there are other companies still producing rolls, from my knowledge, the other companies are art-house style operations with limited distribution and in the piano roll world, that's really limited. Alas, piano rolls have mostly gone the way of the vinyl record. The demand for player piano or pianola rolls has been kept alive by a dedicated group of collectors like me. There is nothing like actually hearing and feeling the performance. So, there's the good news. The less good news is that QRS is no longer owned and operated locally, factory tours are no longer available, and important historical pieces have been moved out of the area and are now on display at a museum in Arizona. This includes the QRS Marking Piano which was named by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers as a National Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark in 1992. Gotta' roll!

Evan is my instructor and he is very patient with my limited piano skills (which was a one -fingered rendition of Do-Re-Mi). I do wish the room that we practiced in was a bit more spacious (it is about the size of a walk in closet ) . After my last two lessons, I was given chords to practice at home on my keyboard (which is a good way of staying fresh and keep the progress going ) . I feel like the previous 2 star reviews here on Yelp are a bit harsh , since the staff has been nothing but friendly, knowledgeable and accommodating (even when I am running late.) Looking forward to learning more on the Piano with Evan.

They do offer recitals and rock band practice, but my son is pretty introverted so we haven't participated in them yet.
