I am very excited that Ben has opened this store. He is a retired music teacher from two reputable music schools in the Buffalo Public School district. He understands each instrument he sells and can teach it. Also he understands the music and materials your child needs to succeed in NYSMA. Another plus, he sells guitars and basses. Truly he is a specialist in woodwind and brass. Which is what this area needed. I need flute music, I need a stand, or even a open hole flute. All right there. Perfect for students of any age. On the suggestion of my son's band instructor, we visited Northtown Music to pick up a saxophone. Ben is a retired band instructor and is such a delight. He worked with us to find the right instrument that also fit our budget. While he was showing the options, he gave my kiddo a little mini lesson. I was so impressed by his teaching style and the quick rapport he developed, that we went back for regular lessons over the summer. We stopped back in last week to find the right flute for my daughter and had the same experience. Great service from someone who is super knowledgeable, good prices and great selection. read more

Last Saturday I took my twins to Northtown Music to purchase instruments. It was my first time stepping foot in the store. They had a refurbished flute and clarinet in stock. I intended to purchase both. The store owner, Ben Boyar, took out the instruments so that the twins could try them. Once they were done he looked at me and said "I'm sorry, I cannot sell you this clarinet." He explained to me that he was a former band teacher and that there was no way my son should be playing clarinet. (He has had lots of dental work including oral surgery. His mouth is still a mess.) Ben told me that the clarinet could ruin his mouth permanently. My son was on the verge of tears. Ben stood up and told my son not to be sad. That he was not going to leave the store empty handed. He looked at me and said "This is my suggestion" He handed my son a pair of drum sticks. He even offered to call the school and explain his concerns and recommend the switch. So we left the music shop with a flute I purchased... and drum sticks that the owner gave my son. Two days later I got a call from Northtown Music. It was Ben. He wanted to check on my son. He thought about him all weekend and felt so bad his twin got a flute and he didn't get his clarinet. He invited me to bring my son back to the store. He said he would get him behind a drum set, teach him to keep a beat and show him how great percussion is. Ben at Northtown didn't know me. He would have made far more money selling me a clarinet than giving me a pair of drum sticks. I highly recommend Northtown Music. I am thankful I chose to go there for the first time last Saturday. In the future, Northtown Music will be where I go for all music purchases. We took Mr. Boyar up on his offer and my son got behind a drum set today at the store. Thank you, Mr. Boyar. Fantastic experience. I haven't picked up a trumpet in 20 years, and decided on a whim that I wanted to get back into playing. After looking online for a used student trumpet, I stopped in and talked to Ben, the owner. He asked me what I was looking for and brought out about a half dozen different instruments for me to try out. Gave me access to the practice room and let me try each of them to my satisfaction. Even after I was pretty sure I had found the right one, he brought out a couple of options I wouldn't have considered otherwise, and I eventually settled on a used Bach (that he even gave me a great discount on). This was at the beginning of the back-to-school season, so the whole time he worked with me, he was juggling a stream of kids and their parents coming in to rent/buy instruments for the school year and he never kept anyone waiting, even as he helped me. Plus, you could tell he loves what he does and his positive attitude with the kids was infectious. He even throws in a free lesson with every instrument! Definitely a business (and owner) worth supporting. read more

The rates are more than reasonable and we enjoy our time while in the store. The owner is exceptionally knowledgeable and fun to be around. This music store is nicer and has more inventory every time I stop in. The proprietor of this delicatessen, Ben, is a friendly and eccentric dude. He has a great sense of humor but he also is extremely knowledgeable about his instruments. I bought a ukelele from there today and ben gave me a discount on a strap, intro book and tuner.
