A new puppy brings with it the responsibility for neutering and spaying as soon as possible. Our pet rescue organization, Furever Friends Dog Rescue of WNY arranged for a neutering for our 15 week old puppy, Hunter. So we arrived at 8:30 am with our boy to sign in along with a dozen other pups for SPCA neutering procedures. Intake only took a few minutes, and our boy was first one in line. We got the call when he was ready for pickup, just about two hours later. With some rest and relaxation, Hunter will be back to his usual playful activities in no time at all! The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Scheduled meet and greets with the dogs have been required for several years now. This is a great system as it could be so stressful for the dogs to have strangers walking back and forth through the kennels all day like how it used to be. Now you get to interact with a dog in a private room where they are more calm and u can actually hear yourself think! I remember viewing dogs walking through the kennels as a child and it scared me. They would all bark at the same time and jump at the door. I think meet and greets are much less stressful for the dogs-im not sure why people put their own selfishness of wanting to browse through dogs like they browse through grocery store aisles. This process is so much better for the dogs mental!! I saw another comment about lying to staff saying u dont have another animal. That's absurd as it can cause serious harm to your dog and the dog u got from the shelter after lying. People must not understand that a bite or attack equals an euthanasia. How unfair to both animals..... so sad to see people complain about this shelter doing RIGHT by its animals! read more

I recently got my second dog from here, and I couldn't be happier. Yes the employees and volunteers were a bit brisk and abrasive, but they have to deal with all sorts of morons who aren't actually prepared to own a pet. You need appointments to see any of the animals, but I stoped in to talk to them, told them exactly what I wanted (large, energetic, playful) and they IMMEDIATELY had a dog come to mind. They had an open appointment for a couple hours later that same day and had me bring my current dog in with me when I came back so the two could meet. I fell in love with Cody (then still named Mr. Beans) instantly and he and Logan got along amazingly. It was very obvious that the staff loved Cody and were so happy he had found a home. I had to wait a week to take him home with me until he could get neutered, but it was worth the wait. There was clear communication about when I could take Cody home, what meds he'll need to recover, and the fact that he was mine and wouldn't be adopted by anyone else while he was waiting for surgery. On a different note, I have just recently stopped in to ask them about feral cat care and possible spay/neuter/release clinics. They not only answered every question I had, but also had a pamphlet on the subject and gave me a few different numbers to call. I have no idea what any of the other reviews are talking about when they complain. Either they were at first rude themselves or they weren't prepared to adopt a pet and got mad when it was pointed out to them. Incredibly unprofessional and disorganized. I went there with my children to look around. Both my daughter and son love cats and were excited to be there. It seemed "Shady" to me that you could not see the dogs and have to do so by appointment only. We were blessed with a wonderful dog in the past from Erie County SPCA where they let you see the dogs without needing an appointments which was perfect. I'm sure they have a reason however it seems like they are hiding something. You don't want the public to see how you maintain the dogs? Make an apt so we can get the dogs "ready" for people to see them. This was the impression my husband and I got. When we decided to check out the cats with my kids, my children were loving them. As we were looking we could hear a staff member complaining to some visitors about how she does not like it when toddlers come in to see cats. That cats don't like toddlers and kids just don't know how to treat cats. My husband and I could hear her and we both took it as her trying to tell us that my children should not be there. My kids are extremely well behaved and we went there to see if there was a cat that would fit our family. That staff member making such comments and not actually talking to us about her concerns makes me question how she is allowed to work/volunteer there in the 1st place. Why would you discourage a family from finding a cat and giving it a wonderful loving home. I grew up with cats and to make a comment that cats don't like toddlers is just not true to say about all cats. This person was clearly unknowledgeable about felines. When I went to the staff and told them I did not apricate the comments they just laughed at me. Thank you for the disturbing experience. Erie County SPCA will be our go to from here on out. PS. Please someone clean the turtle tank that is next to the main door....not exactly the impression you want to give people if you are claiming you care about the animals you take in. read more

My husband and I had to surrender a precious, beautiful and unique looking "barn cat" (feral) we unknowingly acquired during the purchase of our house. I spoke with an employee on the phone and explained our situation in order to find out what could be done by the SPCA. The employee never mentioned bringing proof of Niagara County residency to surrender the cat and of course our Drivers Licenses still has our Erie County address because we haven't moved out of our apartment (in Erie County) yet. After boxing up the cat and driving it to the SPCA we were almost turned away because we had no proof of Niagara County residency and we were told we'd have to take the cat to the Erie County SPCA. After reasoning with an employee and informing them we believed the cat was sick, they agreed to have the Vet check out the cat because they didn't want to turn away a sick cat, which we appreciated. Long story short (was it?), they accepted the cat as long as we brought them proof of residency and gave them a $20 surrender fee. It wreaked inside this facility, but they normally do. read more

My second time there to get a dog. Do not tell them you have another animal, for some reason old ladies become animal psychologist, And you don't get the animal. Next time lie Tell them that you do not have another dog.They are useless people who just get off on keeping animals and cages I guess. The dog I went there for is still there 6 months later he could have had a better life at my house then still sitting in a cage 6 months later. The only time you see them doing anything good is when they're on action 716 getting covered or selling their merchandise and tee shirts like there's some kind of heroes. It's pretty sad. I have always had positive experiences with this organization. I have honestly brought in so many animals that I can't count. They have some conditions that you may not expect, which come down to funding - you have to be a Niagara County resident, there are limited staffed hours, and because they are always full to capacity, they can only take in sick/injured animals. I have brought in multiple sick kitties and they never hesitate to take them. I also have brought I healthy animals to scan and put on their lost and found board. I always bring donations as well, and they have always received them with gratitude. With the resources they have, these folks go above and beyond. Bringing a kitty to get scanned today! read more

This organization has been so questionable for years, but then they took over the Town of Lewiston's Animal Control Officer (because the Town failed to maintain one as required by State Law). However, the Dog Control Officer is so pro-dog that he is utterly useless. He makes excuses, fails to investigate dog attacks or violations because he is too lazy to show up, and basically downplays everything so he 1) won't have to do anything, and 2) can protect people with dangerous dogs, cuz he believes those who complain about dogs are just bitching. As a result, we have had multiple attacks by the same dogs, with the same dogs repeatedly loose. When he gets the call, he plays dumb. Frankly, it's criminal. read more

When our neighbors dog became unmanageable, we agreed to take her and assume any and all vet and care expenses that were necessary to get the dog healthy and give her a great, loving home. The spouse has severe mental issues and took the beautiful pet to this dump. It's nearly impossible to get a hold of a human via phone. They just won't answer emails. When you attempt to set up an appointment where they try to push their Pit Bulls on you, they will lie and speak in a condescending tone. This is the worst run business I have ever encountered in WNY. I would have more than compensated them with regard to any care for this beautiful dog. They would have been a perpetual recipient of philanthropic kindness. I would not take a field mouse to this greedy, short-sighted dishonest facility. It is clear, perfectly clear, why most people say " I would give them zero stars if it let me." Niagara County SPCA could not earn an honest one star rating if their lives depended on it. We visited about 4 times and the next thing we know, we have ringworm! The visiting room that we would visit her in was very dirty. They have a matt in front of the sliding glass door that our cat was rubbing all over and it was full of dirt and hair. They claim the ringworm didn't come from them even though their very own staff member told us that the vet tech had it and said everyone got it! When we questioned that to the vet, she said that the girl lied haha. read more

They lied and put me on the abusive animal list totally untrue. I have owned dogs all my life and I love them very deeply. This person needs to examine ourselves and see if they are doing the right thing for the animals. Obviously they are not, I tried to communicate with the supervisors and they did not want to hear anything or hear my side of the story so I ended up going to the Erie County SPCA were they know I am a loving animal person if I could give this SPCA of Niagara county zero stars I would, because they have no stars working there read more

I would not recommend this location based on customer service. My husband and I went in here twice in the past week looking to adopt a kitten. We were standing at the front desk for literally five minutes before we interrupted the two up front talking. One of them made contact with me and continued her conversation with the other employee or volunteer. Then when we went back again to actually do the adoption the lady at the front was beyond rude. I've never been talked to like that. It was absolutely horrid and so rude. If you do not like customer service then do not volunteer or work at such an environment like that. Stopped in on Friday afternoon to begin the adoption process for a kitten; we adopted two. The shelter is overflowing and the workers are trying to do their best at keeping up with the intake of abandoned, injured and unwanted animals. Upon signing in we spent a few hours getting to know the cats and kittens. Like I said, we went to find one and found two. We were not supposed to take them home until they were fixed; meaning it would be an additional eleven days. We requested to take them that day with a promise to return for surgery; our request was immediately approved. Sydney Crosby and Phil Kessel are the most adorable little guys and we are thrilled to give them a forever home. Please try to understand that the staff isn't trying to be rude on purpose. They see the worst of the worst and at time it takes its toll on them as it would anyone. If they are busy at the front desk the volunteers are happy to answer any questions. read more

I have people living in my home in the basement with 4 dogs and three cats. the smell is terrible. the limit is 3 dogs and three cats. I called spca and the guy came very quickly but did nothing. asked the person how many animals. she said 4 dogs but one comes and goes. so he accepted that and left, refusing to speak to us. read more

This location was everything but helpful. We called the SPCA and we were told to bring in our 13-year-old dog that can no longer climb upstairs and had two tumors one of which is losing blood. We explain there is no one who can take care of him all day long. We were told that we could bring the dog in for an evaluation and they would decide whether he could be helped and adopted out or foster care or he would be euthanized neither of which we would be notified about and that we could surrender the dog to them. After arriving for our appointment we were confronted by three people at the desk who did not even leave their chairs to ask us why we were there and tell us we did not have an appointment. After showing proof on our phone that we spoke with someone there they then proceeded to whisper at the desk among some selves about us and told us to take a seat. After waiting about 20 minutes someone came out and told us that they would not be seeing the dog and he did not look like he needed to be euthanized without any evaluation either way. This place is a waste of time, they do not care about animals or want to help them. They are VERY NASTY and RUDE. read more

I have ALWAYS been a supporter of the NCSPCA... food, donations, blankets, fostering, etc. Recently a neighbor moved & abandoned her cat - an indoor cat suddenly became an outdoor cat, living off the kindness of neighbors. But we all know that is not the life for any cat, especially one who is not spayed! When NCSPCA was contacted to see if they could take the cat, I was told they were full, so I asked for suggestions... and the suggestion I got was "DRIVE IT OUT TO COUNTRY, OPEN YOUR DOOR & LET IT GO". We adopted a beautiful 11yr female Shar Pei who is deaf, named Gigi (previously Ginger.) Although the process was a little chaotic, the staff was great! This is a shelter, so you need to be patient! They want to be sure that the animal is placed with the right family, which mean filling out forms and having a meet n greet, if there is a resident dog at home. This is our second adopted Pei and we would definitely adopt again! read more

The volunteers in the purple shirts are absolutely wonderful, but the two secretaries at the front desk are so miserable and ARE INCAPABLE of doing their jobs correctly. First, they told us we could not put a hold on the two kittens we were set on until the next business day. Then they told us they wont be due for their surgery for another three weeks for their neuter/ spay surgery. However, when we got back on the following business day(2days later), they told us the kittens were already adopted and one of them was already at their new home. Those two lied to us because they did not want to process the paperworks an hour before closing. Although the volunteers were incredibly helpful, the shelter itself is badly kept. On the multiple times we've been here, the dog adoption section smelled terrible to the point where we had to cover our noses with our sleeves. Its doubtful they keep their dogs and their sections clean. Before adopting at this shelter, confirm that your dog/cat is in good health and that the two secretaries don't mess up your paperwork! read more

Several months ago, our most senior cat, Abby, who was 23 years old and in failing health.....well, she told us it was time to go. It was a Saturday and since we live near the Erie County SPCA, we took a chance that they could help us, even though it was the weekend. Turns out, they could not because we actually lived in Niagara County not Erie County. The lady at the counter called Niagara County and was told to advise us, go right there. We arrive at their facility and you can tell they're closed. My hubby and I looked at each other with the same thought in mind, now what do we do? We rang the bell and this very nice lady came to the door, took Abby back, asked if we wanted to be with her, and I just couldn't. By the way, I feel bad about that now. But back to my review. Niagara County bent over backwards to make Abby's last journey as easy on her and her momma and daddy as possible. And only charged us $10.00. Wrapped Abby's little body up in our bath towel, placed her back in the cat carrier and handled her like she was made of glass. Thank you Niagara County for everything! read more
