She labours for hours and hours to make the most perfect cakes in the whole of Scandinavia. My favourites include potato bread, carrot bread, cheese cake, carrot cake, fruit crumble and chocolate banana cake. If you are very lucky, you might be there on a day when Maya prepares her scrumptious vegeburgers; they are made from chickpeas, with a terryiaki sauce and encased in a freshly baked bun. I would never usually eat vegeburgers, but Maya provides the exception that proves the rule. She always has a new cake up her sleeve and loves to give a modern twist to Swedish and Danish classics. Maya singlehandedly bakes all her products on-site, unlike other local bakeries. I find myself wishing that there were more truly independent and unique businesses such as Cafe Rosa at Torvehallerne.

At a first glance, it seems there is some sort of Swedish connection. First, they have lussekatter - the saffran twisted buns that the Swedes eat during the advent weeks. Second, they have the famous Astrid Lindgren's character Pippi Longstocking everywhere, including on their serving mugs. I didn't really find out about the Swedish connection later, but we did try the lussekatter that my Swedish boyfriend approved. As for me, I wouldn't know the difference between a bad lussekatter or a good lussekatter since I have only consumed this baked goods once or twice before. So, I guess the lussekatter is Swedish-approved, sort of. The warm chocolate that I ordered was also delightful. It was probably a little small for 40kr, but I could tell that they made it from scratch, as how it should be instead of just pushing buttons on some machines. I guess this place is a nice alternative to the more popular Granny House on the corner. As we were ready to leave, we saw the Japanese baker made some more of the lussekatter to put in the oven. At least I know that these things are truly homemade, and that's the way it should be.

We'd be stupid to pass this up. Going in, you notice the vibe is very much the same as gelaterias in Italia and Europe, except you're in Copenhagen and the fact that they have licorice ice cream reminds you you are in Scandinavia. But first, I had to try the almond and pistachio. If you were to witness perfection in an ice cream flavor, these two would send you to heaven and back. It did me. It doesn't get any better, the simplicity of flavor is present yet addicting. I've had pistachio and almond in the North and South of Italy and know these flavors very well. The almond and pistachio were on point and authentic. Came back to try these separately. So, on a whim I had a taste of the licorice and immediately knew I had to have it right then and right away. I always thought there's no way I'd enjoy licorice, only Scandinavians have a taste for them. As a visitor, I am in love of this flavor and this flavor made here. Since I had a choice of two flavors, I opted for 1/2 licorice and 1/2 Zuppa Inglese because I thought these 2 would dance well together in my cup.... And that, they did. A taste of the licorice ice cream gave me a taste of brown sugar, malt, bitter anise, honey, cream, salt, sweet, beer, and a touch more bitter but in such a developed combination that I froze for a minute to appreciate. To add to that, the tiny specks of licorice, of the finest variety, added that chew to the gelato that made me gasp it was sooooo good. After this experience, I opine that Siciliansk's profound licorice gelato is better than Paradis' (the other ice cream place I love that serves licorice). Contrasted this flavor with their finely made Zuppa Inglese, I found a taste discovery never experienced, perhaps a new favorite combo. Finally, I like to wait until gelato melts as the final gauge to the quality, cream and purity. When both gelati melted the licorice with the Zuppa Inglese was perhaps the most memorably delicious combo I've had. Can't have this anywhere. I guess I'd have to wait until I get back to experience this again. To be repeated. Will be back to try other flavors. Still a family owned business since opening in 1988, though now with a couple of locations around the city, Det Rene Brød roughly translates to "Pure Bread" and although quite similar to Lagkagehuset and Meyers Bageri there is something that immediately seems more 'homey' about the space, a rustic sort of charm in the way things are displayed and cute signs about the virtues of Coffee as well as patience. Offering both savory Breads and Pastries, an elderly Baker visible behind the counter manning an oven that renders the interior of the space quite warm, it was after scanning the goods a couple of times that the decision was made to invest in a total of six items, the price after tax just under $20USD and first bites of the seed-covered Grov Birkes impressive in just how much the Danish palate differs from America, the thin layer of Jam only slightly sweet and the overall flavor not dissimilar to the Sesame Steam Buns occasionally seen at Chinese Restaurants. Getting more sugary from here forward, though even something as simple as Icing seems to be made less sweet in Copenhagen, a second encounter with Jordbaerkage proved far more successful than the first thanks to darker Chocolate and fresher Berries while the Carrot Cake here was also better than Laura's or Lagkagehuset thanks to an ample amount of grated Vegetables and Nuts, the lack of Frosting made up for by buttery Streusel teaming with Ginger, Cloves and other Spices. Told that it might be a good idea to let the Danish settle for a few more moments, the desire to eat it hot balanced by one of not wanting to lose any of the semi-solid Custard, it was after perhaps ten minutes that the laminated square was torn in half to find the center still jiggly, the Eggy custard again reminiscing a classic Dim Sum selection while the Hazelnuts offered a nice textural contrast despite not really affecting the flavor too much. Rounding out the visit with a Cinnamon Roll plus a chilled square best described as a Klondike Bar replacing Ice Cream with Marzipan, those looking for the best Kanelsnegl" in the city need look no further than Det Rene Brød, the flattened coil allowing more surface area to come into contact with the heat and thus become more crispy while the laminated dough holds up well to a whole lot of Butter and Cinnamon plus a thin swirl of Icing.
