Nick's has been a part of my life for close to 30 years now. Back when I went to college in Kearney, it was an at least twice a month splurge. They've been in a few different locations, and still turn out a great product. This isn't a fancy kind of gyro place...and to be honest, nostalgia probably influences my rating and review, but I've always loved Nick's and have never found another gyro place that can even come close. It's closer to a Greek taco than a "traditional" gyro (no tzatziki sauce here - just sour cream, onion, lettuce and cheese) There's just something about those danged pitas! After the original Greek brothers sold their stake, the place did suffer some, but came roaring back to life, delivering that signature gyro as good as ever. I really miss the location in downtown "on the bricks," but I'm happy to still be able to get my fix when we drive across Nebraska! Plus, I hear that they are working out a way to ship to us out-of-towners! if that happens, my diet is definitely going to suffer. Get the gyro, and a side of corn nuggets. I like Nick's Gyros, been coming here for a while now. I'll try not to be bias, but fair. I love gyros in general and regularly get a Gyro salad (to cut down on carbs...darn you delicious fries). Most of the time I come during lunch, where they get pretty busy and the wait can be long. I recommend to call ahead to alleviate this problem as if you are going during your lunch break (too). The only other critique I would have is sometimes the food can be hit or miss. Though it is delicious and most of the time it's fresh, there has been times where it seems the meat was over done and it's off putting to how great the gyro (or salad) can be. Overall, I'll keep frequenting Nick's because it is great food and I look forward to their Friday special (gyro salad) and end my work week with it most weeks. read more

Used to be a fan of this place but not anymore. 2 chicken pita combos where $21 and then we got charged extra to pay with a card. Staff barely acknowledged us, food was burnt to a crisp, and charged $1 for condiments. I ordered the chicken pita and the chicken was so burnt it was not even able to be chewed. This is one of those reviews I hate to write because I'm aware of the impact that public negative feedback can have on a business, but... wow, this restaurant has really gone down hill. Literally and figuratively - back when they were located on top of the hill at the intersection of 39th and 2nd Ave, the food was consistently good, the wait was short (even when they were getting slammed over lunch), and I always got exactly what I ordered. My wife and I would grab lunch there two or three times a month and the food and experience kept us coming back. Now we poke our head into the place maybe once or twice a year to see if they've gotten their act together and so far the answer is still... nope. Today's order is kinda typical for what we expect when we go there now -- a long wait; decent but inconsistent food, ok atmosphere. Two gyros-to-go took 20 minutes to make. It wasn't very busy (maybe 1/3rd full), and all the people ahead of us waiting for their food were pretty grumpy so I assume they too had been tapping their feet for a while. When I finally got the food and got home with the food and opened the bag, they'd given me someone else's order. When I got back I had to wait behind another guy who was venting at them for forgetting to give him one of his gyros. The whole thing was a comical disaster. Now look, I get that it's possible that I just keep popping in on bad days and maybe most of the time this place is fast and consistent. But I kinda doubt it. And so I'm registering my experiences here, for what it's worth; if you do go here, expect a long wait, regardless of how busy they are, and make sure you double check what they hand you before you leave the restaurant. Oh, and bring cash unless you want to pay extra for using a credit card - a sign above the register merrily points out that they pass that cost on to you too. If everything goes right and you show up on a day when the meat isn't too crispy, the food is actually pretty damn tasty with good textures and great flavors. Which is probably why customers still come to this place. Hopefully when I pop my head in again in a year or so (if they're still in business), I can come back here and say things are so much better. But for now, two stars seems about right. read more

I used to love going to Nick's in Hastings when I lived there. I moved closer to Kearney and have tried going to the Nick's there at all three of the locations they have had. It is NOT the same. Which is crazy to me because I believe they are owned by the same person. I have not had a positive encounter with any of the staff, even if you are the only ones in the restaurant the food takes over 15 minuets to come out and there is no real taste. I have worked a LOT in fast food so I understand some nights are just off nights and I know how tired and frustrated people can get...but this is more than that. Two reviews in one, which is why I'm giving 3 stars. If it was from the second review it would be 1. I tried Nick's Gyros a few months back and got the Meat and Cheese pita and it was not bad. Different, but good. However, I went back again and got the daily special combo, Chicken pita and it was not good, and by not good, I mean it's literally the worst Chicken pita I've ever eaten. No exaggeration here. The Pita had lettuce, onion (I asked for no onions, but still got the), sour cream, and chicken. The chicken was fried, but even that did not render the meat edible. I do not like leaving bad reviews, especially during these uncertain times. I wholeheartedly support small, locally owned business any time I can, but I feel compelled to warn others of this taste bud displeasure. My first bite was literally tasteless. This pita had the appearance of something quite tasty, but every bite was worse than the first. I tried just eating the meat and I couldn't. I have eaten some mediocre meals before but this is in the top 5 worst. On a positive note I also had the fried cheese balls. These were better, but a dipping sauce to compliment them would have been nice if it was offered. I'm not saying I won't go back or suggesting you pass on them altogether, but definitely pass on the Chicken pita! Maybe hot sauce or something might have helped, but I doubt it. read more

Good food! Lacks atmosphere... so cold in there. Windows are covered with black curtains that look disheveled. About ready to fall off or something. The women's bathroom needs updated and a good cleaning . The toilet needs scrubbed with a pumice stone. Just does not give you a cozy feeling in there... to bad because the food was great. Being from Kearney means Nick's is a tradition, its in our blood. After moving to Omaha, Nick's became a primary reason to drive the 2.5 hrs. Yesterday, I eagerly decided to drive down. I woke up this morning counting the minutes to 11am when they opened. My love of Nick's has never been shook for over a decade, despite many questioning the direction Nick's has gone since Carlos became the owner. Many family and friends had written the place off after repeated bad experiences, so I usually had to go alone but I happily did because the food is so special. How special? Restaurants in Omaha have created the "Kearney gyro" to attempt to recreate it. Finally, 11am rolls around. I walk in the door stand and the counter. There's a man maybe 10 ft away with his back turned filling ketchup. I stand there waiting, a LONG minute passes, but nothing. I think maybe he didn't hear me come in, I worked 15 yrs in restaurants, I get it. I say "hello?... hello?" I wait, but still nothing, not a glance, not a "hey, be right there". So I clear my throat, fumble my keys around to "casually" make noise. Another LONG minute passes and I start to wonder "did I die on my way here? Is this hell?" To make it so far, 188 miles to be exact, to be so close, yet so far from the object of my desire, my love, a gyro with extra meat. By the time another man comes out of the back, minutes of me awkwardly standing like a confused dip, it was too late. I was already out the door, devastated, defeated, hurt, angry. I thought we were better than that. So I went to Quiznos, also not available in Omaha. A wonderful young man happily greeted me and made my sandwich. A teenage boy with more respect for his job than grown men and, frankly, I tipped this young man accordingly. From now on, I'll be getting my Nick's in Hastings, I recommend you do the same. This sucks, I haven't felt like this since my marriage ended. Its like losing someone I love but its time to realize Nick's is basically a toxic boyfriend. Good place to stop in Kearney on your way from Denver to Omaha. You need to know this is some sort of Midwestern gyro place though. An original gyro here is served with iceberg lettuce, grated cheddar cheese and sour cream. Sounds weird but it actually was pretty good. Friends recommended this place and had I not known prior that it isn't what you traditional gyro I may have been not so happy. Its definetly a 'know before you go' kind of place. This place has gone completely downhill. It used to be something that I looked forward to when I went back to Kearney. The pita bread is just not the same anymore. They didn't have gyro meat ready to serve. The service was bad. Even the seating is lame. Hair in the food. It's like they're trying to go out of business. We always stop here to scratch that gyro itch every time we pass through Kearny. So good. They make their own pitas, which really makes a difference. Don't like gyro meat? Try one of their chicken pitas. Fried is great. They updated their decor & looks really nice. No time to sit & eat? Get a meal to go or have them pack the basics (meat & pitas) separately for longer travel & put it together later. We do that, storing it in the freezer until the urge strikes again. Sort of a traditional gyro with a twist. Located across from the UNK fine arts building, the staff are always friendly, with amazing-speedy service. The gyros will fill you up the meat consists of a mix of lamb, beef, and seasoning. They top it off with fresh lettuce, shredded cheddar cheese, and jullian sliced white onion. This has been my favorite place to eat since i was knee high of a fence post. This is defiantly a must stop if you're traveling through, or have never tried it. A++++++. read more

Awful. We ate there and felt sick almost immediately afterwards. We didn't go back for nearly a year, and when we did we were rewarded with terrible food poisoning. A week of sickness from a very low quality "gyro." I'm not sure how they even get away with calling them gyros since the ingredients aren't authentic. We will not be going back ever. The only good thing that happened on the visit was my one year old refusing to eat anything. That saved him from an illness that could very well have landed him in the hospital or worse. read more

The restaurant was filthy. It had me rethinking of eating there. We went the one by UNK. We were not acknowledged for awhile. There was live music and it was awkward. She was singing Christian music. The restaurant tables was pushed around. We ordered a chicken philly and chicken strips basket. Fried pickles looked WEIRD. Tasted just ok. My philly was good, but super greasy. Chicken strips were dark and looked burnt. All in all I could have spent my money at Qdoba, saved money, and had better food, service, and atmosphere. The Gyros are good but the service is consistently poor at the Campus location and the downtown Nicks on the Bricks location.

Always have to stop here at least once when I visit Kearney. One of the best places I've ever eaten at. The Cordon Bleu and Philly are to die for. Best cheese balls in the state, too. read more

Ate there last weekend, Gyro's were pricey and not what I was used to getting when I lived in New York City, but they were very tasty. The staff was pleasant, the place was busy and we still had fast service. Highly recommend stopping there for a welcome change of the usual burger joints. read more
