Over…read morethe years we have benefited from the skills of talented clinicians, each of whom I've been forever grateful for. Dr. Hernz is a gentle man who embodies peace and kindness. He is funny, but more than anything he conveys to his patients his fervent desire for them to feel better, and that he is on the same team as them. It's amazing what a transformative effect that has on a teenager. For example, on a recent visit, the NMT was being, well, a teen. Sullen, silent, maddeningly obstinate. He went into session staring at the ceiling and ignoring everything Dr. Hernz said, every attempt to start a conversation was met with a glare then a look away. Fun stuff. After about 10 minutes (really, I timed it) Dr. Hernz calmly turns to me and says "So, what have you noticed?" I began to share my observations, the NMT got up, walked out. OK. Then, five minutes later, he walks back in and...starts talking. Engages. Wow. Then Dr. Hernz tells him again, he's there to help him, he really wants him to feel better. My son, he looks at his doctor and says "I'm really sorry for walking out. I needed a moment but that was rude." Shut the front door. Dr. Hernz took it in stride, and they continued working. Other good things: Appointments are always on time, or within 5 minutes of scheduled time. Receipts are sent promptly within a day of the session. 95% of the time prescriptions are sent electronically, and this is done promptly. The imperfect: I don't always get a same-day response to email, it's usually a day or two. Occasionally prescriptions are not sent over promptly, as in sent within a day or two. Messages left for him are returned, sometimes same day, sometimes within a day or two. It's a graceful pace of administration. Also, no surprises, he does not participate with any insurance carrier. This is not surprising, it's rare to find a psychiatrist who does, they are a nationally underserved medical specialty, and especially in child psychiatry, there are far too few of them available, period. The good part of that is that his fees are reasonable, so the amount over what our insurance plan covers is fairly small. If you can't guess by the time you got here, YES I would recommend him. He's wonderful.

I explained that I was looking for a provider for a friend and I had already spoken to another neuro-psychologist who explained that there are a lot of differences in neuro psych assessments and highly recommended that I ask other providers about this before deciding which one to make an appointment with (the provider who gave me this information was too far away for my friend to see). I also called another office and learned they were not taking new patients but the owner/psychiatrist there spent quite a bit of time on the phone advising me how to best help my friend. I actually offered to pay him for his time with me since he spent a significant amount of time educating me but he refused to take any payment. These experiences really highlighted how differently Rittenhouse Psychiatric operates and also highlights how focused they are on money rather than patient care. They even tell you on their general voicemail, before you even have an opportunity to speak to anyone, about their requirements for credit card up front since they don't accept insurance. At that time, I saw nurse practitioner Tim KilKelley, who has since left. He was professional, kind, and truly understanding--everything you'd want in a provider. Unfortunately, the rest of the experience didn't measure up. I was later assigned to therapist Betsy Stratton, whose approach felt inappropriate and off-putting. During our first session, she joked that "Delco Catholic" should be listed in the DSM IV. While I chuckled at the absurdity, that kind of humor belongs at a private dinner table--not in a clinical setting. The billing department was even more troubling. Melanie Caroselli, the billing representative, was shockingly rude. When I tried to resolve a billing discrepancy, she ignored multiple requests and bluntly told me, "This is the cost--$50," despite my insurance indicating a $25 copay. Her dismissiveness and refusal to address the issue felt unethical, bordering on insurance fraud. To be fair, the front desk staff were pleasant, and their therapy dog Benny was a sweet touch. But unfortunately, that's where the positives end. The practitioners and billing team created more stress than support, which is the last thing anyone needs when seeking help for mental health. Please do your research and consider other options. People deserve care that heals--not care that harms.

Remove half of your medical record before he faxes it to your next provider to make sure you're taken off of the meds you were previously well managed on. Make sure you obtain a copy of your medical records from this practice personally before you allow him to send your records anywhere. He makes baseless claims that are easy to disprove. A patient in crisis is a patient incapable of defending themselves. He'll ignore you but his outgoing message tells you "go to the crozer crisis center". After he takes you off of all of your meds and causes your crisis. He dismissed my female prescribers opinion from my medical record before giving it to me. It took over 60 days to get my record. Another violation of HIPPA. He is way too comfortable breaking the law. Psychiatric patients are easy to hurt especially when you're their physician. Jackie Smith his receptionist was a nightmare toward me. She acts on behalf of the practice and she feels confident making comments that are in blatant violation of HIPPA. Front desk should not have a better understanding than your doctor, regarding treatment. He's extremely entitled, he behaves like he's above the law. He's impulsive, he behaves like a narcissist. I know more about mental health than he does and he's supposed to be a doctor. Or maybe he just genuinely doesn't care. He's only in it for a check, that's why he's always accepting new patients, and he's got no consideration for other patients time. He only meets with his patients for a couple of minutes at a time. He only ever spoke to me once for five minutes over the phone before he made a false report in my medical record, after I threatened to pursue legal action for his misconduct he began very intentionally retaliating. To try and prevent me from getting care elsewhere, to try and spark a mental Health emergency. I'm a widow with a toddler, he didn't blink and eye when he gave me only two weeks of meds, and discharged me as a patient. He never notified me, he just refused to refill my medication after it was stolen. He refused to take my police report. When I got upset because I really need my meds he abandoned me as a patient. Then he wrote in my medical records that I wouldn't give him a police report, and that I refused drug testing. He never asked me to take a drug test. He's a monster

I was not told that if I stopped that they wouldn't refill my script. On the phone INSTEAD of asking if I wanted to schedule an appointment they told me to call my primary and then hung up. Screw that. If they really weren't out for the money they wouldn't make me go to therapy and pay a $40 co pay on top of a $40 script. If they knew anything they'd know that there is a difference between a chemical imbalance - which has only been cured for me through medication (after 10 years of therapy) and not make me go and sit in silence for a script. I liked the therapist and the doctors. Their policies are ridiculous and inconvenient and the staff sucks. If they really cared about their patients they would have called me after they received the request for a script refill and not just tell me to go somewhere else.
