Peanut butter hot chocolate with cream and marshmallows.
Stephanie B.

I had visited the location at St. Enoch once before but hadn't been impressed enough to go again. Despite this, so many people I know were so excited when the new one opened on my side of the city that I had to give this location a go. My first impression that it was much busier than I expected but I saw that as a good thing. As my friend and I stared at the menu, the person behind the counter asked us if we were sitting in. When we said yes we were given menus and told we could sit and come up to the counter to order. The menu has so many just delicious looking sandwiches. There are too many to list but they all looked delicious. I ended up getting a triple bypass, which is pulled BBQ pork, potato scone, black pudding, cole slaw, and chipotle sauce (or sweet chilli). My friend, being really into simple foods, was glad to be able to get a basic turkey sandwich with cheese. We grabbed our drinks (they have many nice nonstandard soda options) and sat down. It didn't take long for our sandwiches to arrive and it was well worth it. The sandwiches came toasted on the bread we requested. The combination on my sandwich worked better than I had even hoped and it was large enough to feel like a meal. And at around £14 for the two of us, it was a really good bargain. We skipped out on the donuts this time, and we also skipped out on the warm drinks. The donuts looked good though and they had a peanut butter hot chocolate on the menu. I'm certainly looking forward to trying it though, as they are open until 11pm every night. The wide open hours are what takes this from what could have only been a 4 star review to 5 star. I look forward to trying more of the menu.

I really want to love this shop, I'm American for crying out loud, but based on donuts alone, I'm not entirely impressed. I don't really have much to base my love of donuts on here in the UK- I've only managed to score Krispie Kreme in London and there are no Dunkn' Donuts around, so eating at Nic's is a fairly new re-discovery of my love for donuts. I've been to the St. Enoch's location before and bought a sandwich and a strawberry creme donut which was tasty enough. This trip to the newly opened Byres road, my friends and I bought 6 donuts (2 a piece) and sat in to stuff our faces with them. I am a sucker for anything with Nerds on them, so when I saw that one of the donuts had Nerds, I was all over it. What I failed to realise was that there were also millions (?) on them, which I've never had or heard of, so instead of there being loads of crunchy little nerds to offset the doughy donut, there were what tasted like stale millions ruining the Nerds flavour. The donut itself was ok. A bit dense for my liking, but it went down easy enough. For my second donut, I got the oreo cookie and peanut butter donut, which was a donut with chocolate icing (ganache I believe they called it) and a piece of oreo and peanut butter drizzled over it. Again, it was pretty dense, and the topping was just alright. Nothing to write home about and nothing to run back for, given they're a bit steep when it comes to prices. Maybe it's a good thing I don't love these donuts as much as KK or DD, helps with not ruining my workouts and helps with not spending so much on something that doesn't last long. Their food, from what I've tasted at St. Enoch is pretty tasty, my next trip though, I'm drying to try a hot dog. Me and hot dogs....I have no idea. I just always want one, but never give in.

Please don't tap the glass, it makes the donuts nervous!

OK, I'll get this out of the way. Hotdogs are overrated. There I've said it. I don't mind them, but they have to be about the worst designed food in the world when it comes to toppings, and even the best dogs still fall short on taste. In my opinion. Don't hate me. Having visited the St.Enoch Square branch of NYC Deli, and having tried one of their hotdogs I will admit it was good but still, it was just a hotdog. Thankfully there is more, a LOT more, to this deli than just hotdogs, so when I heard they were opening up in Byres Road I knew one thing for certain; I'll really need to get back to the gym! That said, there is another problem that Nic's has, the menu all sounds so damn delicious it's really hard to choose! Clare S and I popped in for a bite of dinner and I was so torn I ended up ordering two sandwiches and taking one home with me for the next day (and some doughnuts, more on them later). My dinner sandwich was the Heart Stopper, ordered on ciabatta, a wonderful pressed sandwich of BBQ pulled pork, coleslaw, sweet chilli and a potato scone wedged in there too. The pork was perfectly sticky and moreish and it soon vanished! My lunch sandwich I'm blaming on Debbie B, spotted as she walked past with a friend, she popped in and sung the virtues of the doughnuts (honestly, more on them soon!) and the Vietnamese Chicken Twerker. Reheated for my lunch the next day it was so tasty! The peanut butter and mashed avocado providing a lovely gooey paste for the tender roast chicken and a nice heat from the coriander and lime salsa. So, of the 17 pressed sandwich options I've had 2, only 15 to go! And yes, I will be trying the XXL which may well be my last ever review on Yelp as it looks deliciously deadly! I mentioned doughnuts before and it's only fair I finish this review by confirming that they are amazing. Better than those stodgy "crispy cream" ones I think, they manage to be both wonderfully decadent and light and fluffy at the same time. I've no idea how they do it but you have to try one (or three). Not sure on the bacon doughnut that was on special but hey, I'll try anything with bacon on it!! It's a small place, but we managed to get a seat and the staff were friendly and not in any way enablers of the doughnut eating variety (we got one of the doughnuts on the house!). I think I will be back, especially as it's on my route into Byres Road... I mean it'd be rude not to plan a few lunch sandwiches there, right?

Donuts.

Every Friday my office gets donuts to go with the morning coffee. Most Friday's those donuts come from Greggs. That kind of makes sense, I guess; Greggs serves a purpose, it's fairly ubiquitous, guaranteeing almost everyone will pass a branch on the way to work and it's cheap. Thing is, we deserve better than Greggs. In my heart I know this to be true. Greggs is just the lowest common denominator. For the past few months I've been walking past a place that looked like it could be better than Greggs. Today it was my turn to get the donuts. My turn, my rules. It was time to try Nic's. I showed up early in the morning, they were open but still setting up. However, I was reassured that the donuts were ready, they just weren't in the display cabinet yet. A staff member offered to make me up a couple of mixed cases when I displayed clear bewilderment and the huge range of flavours on offer. I was offered a coffee while I waited. It was smooth, hot and delicious. When I presented the donuts to my hungry co-workers I was hailed as a hero. They were sweet and soft and just perfect with the morning coffee. People went back for seconds. The other team looked over and were jealous of our superior snacks. These donuts made finishing off the week just that little bit easier. Sure, they're a teeny bit pricier than Greggs, but at £12.99 for a box of 12 they hardly break the bank, and they're just soooo much better. Judging from my visit to the store the hot dogs Nic's sell also look pretty exciting. The staff are friendly, the store is nicely laid out and I don't think you'd struggle for a table at lunch time. I'm a firm fan.

If you are putting in a hard day shopping around Byers Lane, you owe yourself a break.

We stumbled upon this amazing little place. A display of wonderful donuts caught our eye. We looked through the selection, and were told that there were more downstairs ready to go. Everything was fresh, tasty, and creatively prepared. A delightful little spot.

Sometimes you just need a "dog"(not to be confused with a dug) and only a Nic's one will do. That was the story for me last Friday when I picked Trudie M up from her work and let her know we were going directly to the Nic's on Byre's Road. Being a big fan of the St Enoch location already I was confident that the high standard of tasty treats would be on offer again. This venue is much bigger with plenty of tables and chairs if you want to sit in. Decor is the same and fits with the branding that is now synonymous with the name. Service was friendly and quick although annoyingly the card machine was out of action. On offer is a variety of highly indulgent doughnuts, sandwiches and hot dogs all at very competitive prices. For example two huge dogs for around 8 quid. I went with the cheesy pig dog and it was layered with cheese and bacon. This is a massive heavy and tasty option. Well worth trying, but not for the faint hearted in terms of meat and cheese factor. The food here is great. I would pitch it as Glasgow "meats" America, perfect for filling lunches (or dinners) and will take away any hangover you might have in minutes.

Went for a donut-y breakfast one morning with my partner. I've tried these donuts before given by a friend and I just had to get more! Their choice of donuts are amazing. I actually like them better than Krispy Kreme. The staff were super friendly and helpful. We decided to sit in. We ordered 6 donuts to share and a latte each (had to take one home, so filling). Everything was super yummy as expected. They also do more than just donuts which I am yet to try. The menu looked great so I need to go back :)

I like Nic's, I really do. The variety of donuts, sandwiches and hotdogs they offer is trully amazing and I can't help myself but want it all. But for me, the food I've actually gotten to try there so far didn't live up to my expectations. On my first visit, I got the cheesy pig dog and a strawberry cheesecake donut. The hot dog looked pretty great with generous amount of bacon and cheese on top of it - but the taste left me kinda disappointed. I like when hot dogs taste at least a bit like actual meat, this one tasted like it's only heard of it. It had kind of a foamy consistency too, which I wasn't too fond of either. The cheese and bacon were good, but the whole dog lacked some interesting flavor, I think it could do with a bit seasoning at least. The donut was really good. The only downside I can think of was that the strawberry on top didn't look very fresh, but otherwise I enjoyed the donut a lot and so I couldn't wait to come back for more. I popped back in yesterday and got the two donuts that were specials of the week - the club tropicana and a chocolate/mint one. While I can't say they were bad, they weren't amazing either. They were both kinda dense and very sugary, which was the main flavor you could taste. I also got the LA club lite sandwich to takeaway, since I've heard some good things about their sandwiches and thought I should give it a try. It was pretty good, with lots of bacon and chicken and really yummy avocado. Unfortunatelly, they forgot to put mayo on it, so it was a bit dry, although the big amount of avocado sort of made up for that. But although my experience wasn't so great so far, I feel kinda drawn to this place. And after reading Briony's review, I kinda really want to try the vietnamese chicken twerker now. So I think I'll be back fairly soon, hopefully I'll be more lucky then!

This is the place to go for mega American deli style sandwiches that Joey Tribiani would be proud of and donuts to rival Krispy Kreme. They've had a branch on St Enoch Square for ages but I only found out about it recently when this branch opened. I decided to check it out and see why the original was so popular. I had a Snickers donut which was tasty, super sweet and had a good flavour of roasted peanuts. I'm not a huge fan of these crazy flavoured type of donuts (my favourite is a hot freshly fried sugar ring!) but I'll be back to try their classic cinnamon which I think it would be perfect with coffee. I also had a Smokin' Cuban sandwich minus the cranberrry and plus lettuce. It was the best sandwich I've had in a while! It comes with a huge amount of smoked ham, turkey, Swiss cheese, pickles and dijon mustard. This sandwich will definitely keep you full until dinner. The place itself has been done up with some Nic's NYC Deli branding but is much the same as it was when it was Crepe A Croissant. There are three tables for two, two tables for four and a bar that seats six. If you're in a group it could be hard to get a seat and a wee bit cramped. It would be good to have some booths in here. I got my food to go and the girls behind the counter were super fast and friendly too even though they were pretty busy. I was almost put off going here by the titles of the sandwiches (Triple Bypass, Heart Stopper) but there are healthy options available if you can resist such temptations as donuts with Kinder hippos in the middle! The menu is really adaptable so you can order things the way you like and it's great to be able to get a freshly made sandwich on Byres Road.

Fantastic grilled sandwich with fajita chicken. Was absolutely scrumptious!

If you have never been in to Nics Deli (why not? what is wrong with you?) it is a cool, but incredibly busy little lunch spot with a wall of cool black and white pictures, a large service counter and a few painted wooden tables dotted around so you can choose to sit in. Okay! Okay! enough about the decor, lets talk about the food because this little slice of American heaven is a lunch time mecca for me - Hotdogs, Sandwiches, Wraps, Baked Potatoes, Salad Bowls and Taco Bowls crammed full of delicious and imaginative fillings....you can find their full menu here, I would tell you all my favourites but honestly I love them all. As well as a great choice of savoury options their sweet offerings are off the charts amazing - the donuts are INCREDIBLE, best donuts I have ever tasted, and again with amazing flavours and topping to choose from. Also on offer is a selection of light fluffy american pancakes and waffles with tons of lush flavours to choose from. Are you getting the impression that i love this place? Because I really really do. On this particular visit I ordered a foot long cheesy pig dog, which is a hotdog covered in bacon and melted cheese and was exactly as delicious as it sounds....although this is definitely something I need to eat with a fork and knife because it is so big and messy. For dessert I choose what can only be described as the king of all donuts - a cookies donut sandwich! I'll give you a moment just to process the thought of a cookie donut sandwich!....... This is one of their regular freshly baked donuts slathered in fondant and sandwiched between two crunchy but chewy peanut butter cookies, then topped with honeycomb and more fondant - are you speechless? I certainly was when I saw it and I can't even begin to tell you how epic it tasted, even if it did take me 3 sittings to finish it. Nics Deli is one of my favourite lunch time spots in G-Town, due to the calorie count I clock up on my visits I tend to keep it as a treat and maybe only visit once a month....but boy the calories are worth it.

I'm not in this part of the city often so have to admit I was very pleased to see this place! I've eaten in all three now, and each have the same menu of deliciousness (they should call it that actually - BOW DOWN BEFORE THE MENU OF DELICIOUSNESS!) chock full of taste combos that make me salivate, all available on a variety of breads or whacked on a baked potato. And that's before I get to the donuts (better than Krispy Kreme?). I had the Manwich - horrible name, great sandwich. A wonderfully meaty affair, but all of it tasted great, soft and moist turkey breast, nicely peppered pastrami and... some ham I think too? Chuck some BBQ sauce in there, throw it all on a ciabatta, toast it and deliver to my face hole, stat!! Is what I didn't say to the lady who served me, but it was something like that... And I'm salivating now thinking back to it. Sure it's all a bit cheap and cheerful, but the staff are always friendly, and you can even mix up your own amazing concoction of deliciousness if you are feeling creative! It's kinda hard to fault any of these establishments, so if I was being very picky I'd suggest that this one was a little cold inside so I ended up keeping my jacket on. No biggie though!

It had bland, dry pork (with no bbq flavor whatsoever), lettuce, tomato, an onion ring and some coleslaw. I'm giving 3 stars for the friendly and attentive service. One star for the food.

Well, if you really want to know I had French toast, bananas and maple syrup. Yum! Anyway, way off topic here. Aye, so The Crafty Pig. Hmmm??? Well it has a new menu and an interesting sounding one at that. We were initially only popping in for drinks but the smell of food grabbed us by the ghoolies, well if I had any that's were it would be grabbed. I had a cheeky wee Frulli Strawberry Beer to whet my whistle and opted to have the Macdog for my main. We also inquired to the bacon popcorn which they didn't have in. I thought it was going to be something awesome but it's just bacon flavouring on popcorn. The girl explained that the top list of sides were actually all bar snacks. I was a little disappointed. My Macdog arrived and I have to say that 'd' word again. Yup, I was disappointed. It was bun heavy, very dry with a funny tasting dog and the driest macaroni pasta (no sauce) topped with three triangles of plastic cheese. Now, I loooooove cheese but I cannot stand plastic cheese. Don't get me wrong, presentation looked good and I'm thankful for the chip portion but I really didn't enjoy it as much as I had hoped. I was super tempted to get the doughnut burger, which I may have to share by looking at Gordon M's photos. I'm not giving up on the place. I like it, to be honest not much has changed since the now past gone LUAC days. They did a cracking redecoration job so there isn't really anything that needs updated yet. So thankful for the ladies toilets being refurbished. I hated them in the Hubbards/The Wise Monkey days. It's definitely worth swinging by for, they have plenty of activities going on including their games room featuring a pool table. Keep an eye to their facebook page as their website seems to be currently down. So, whose up for the doughnut burger?

They have come along way from their start of having some space at Variety bar to being part of the bigger Tribeca group and now opening a location in the centre of the city at Royal Exchange Square. First impressions were not great, it was much smaller than we thought and the table our group was sat at was very cramped in and really close to another groups table. The staff were friendly enough though and we went on with picking our mains and sides. I had a burger and shared poutine & Mac n cheese. The food was slightly disappointing to be honest. The portions on everything were very small in size and I don't feel like we got value for money at all. The poutine was under cooked and the sauce was to runny for my taste. The Mac was ok, but it was very very plain. The burger was average, but gone in two bites. (OK Maybe three) All in the food was pretty meehhhh and a bit disappointing. And so to Smoak, once of Pivo Pivo, now with it's own location on Royal Exchange Square. It's a small space, and we were sitting in the back where room is a little on the tight side. We had pre-ordered to avoid the lunchtime rush and so I already knew that I would be having the Dirty Harry. After being shown to our table, drinks were ordered and delivered and the food arrived promptly after that. I hadn't ordered any chips or sides with mine (in a vague effort to be healthy) so when it was placed in front of me it did look a little on the small side as it was on a plate clearly made to hold some fries (which most of my colleagues had). An odd thing to note, perhaps, but presentation is everything right? Well of course it's not. Taste is everything! The Dirty Harry - a venison hot dog, topped with BBQ pulled pork, cheese and fried onions, all served in a brioche style hot dog bun - looked pretty average when it arrived and did little to prove me wrong. The fried onions scattered on the top were more charred and crispy than fried and so small all the flavour was gone, so that was a bit of a disappointment. The first bite of the hot dog proved promising, the flavour of the venison hot dog was there, the cheese wasn't overpowering, and the little kick of sweetness from the pulled pork helped, although I'm not sure the brioche bun was the best idea, making the entire thing a little on the sweet side. However by the last few bites I was pretty underwhelmed and left with just a bun that was pretty dry, and a some of the venison hot dog, I ended up adding some ketchup just to make it easier to eat. Price wise paying just short of £10 for a pretty average hotdog and a ginger beer didn't feel like value for money. My whelmed remains undered and I don't see me hurrying back to Smoak any time soon. My eyes however were very much glued to the Hot Dog menu where you can try such delights as the amazing Cheesy Pig Dog ( bacon and cheese) or the BBQ Dog (sweet fried onions, BBQ Sauce and dill pickle) or the very tempting Glasga Dog ( black Pudding and fried egg). What makes these dogs in my opinion the best take away dogs in Glasgow is that they fry off their dogs for a few minutes which makes them extra tasty. I've not tried the freshly made pancakes or waffles yet but they do come with some lovely looking toppings - the Banana Beast ( banana, maple, pecan nuts and ice cream) Peanut Butter Jelly Time (peanut butter and blackcurrant or strawberry jam) or the Sweet Porker Stack ( bacon and maple syrup) these are definitely next on my list to try from the menu. On my last visit I finally gave in to the cool looking doughnuts. These lovely little clouds of light dough are made in-house ensuring they are as fresh as they come. It started with a seven course set menu and ended with a man standing on a table playing a saxophone along to house beats in the middle of a bar. Sounds fun, doesn't it? This pop-up street food event was created by 'Mad Chef' - the resident chef at Bar Bloc on Bath Street. For the first time, he decided to create a New York inspired evening of street food, music and fun! The event was hosted by Mini Bar, a tiny, club-like venue that squeezed around thirty people in for this incredible event. The first two courses came as one, consisting of Smoked Corn Chowder and Mad Falafel - fried falafel balls fused with coconut and peanut butter. The chowder, which I didn't expect to like, was salty, smokey and filled with chunks of soft potato and pancetta. The falafel balls were a huge hit with everyone, containing whole peanuts - no processed peanut butter here! Served in street-food style cardboard trays, the food tasted and felt authentic, even the salad garnish was delicious! The next course we ended up waiting quite a while for, but the atmosphere of the place was fantastic and a big screen in the bar was linked to a camera in the kitchen which showed a massive set of decks in the middle of the kitchen, with Mad Chef bouncing around trying to get everything done. When the next course did come out, it was worth the wait, thought not for the faint-hearted! It was the 'Park Slope Patty' - a beef patty with salted caramel, habanero puree, caramelised onions, American cheese and the usual relish. I think it was pretty brave he decided to serve such a spicy burger as so many people just don't do chilli, and this was pretty hot! The great thing was, though the habanero puree was hot, the other elements of the burger helped tone it down and the sweetness of the salted caramel & onions complimented the spice perfectly. Next up, the Vendor Dog, which was one of my favourite courses but also by far the messiest! A little hot dog in a mini brioche bun with fried chilli onions and classic ketchup & mustard. So much flavour in such a little bun! The final savoury course was the Cuban Pork Taco - pulled pork on a tortilla with wedges of fresh orange, lime and a dollop of sour cream. The pork was succulent and delicious and the zesty freshness of the citrus fruit was inspired! The desserts were soon whizzing their way round the room, starting with mini strawberry meringues and home made honeycomb. The honeycomb was fantastic and the meringues were certainly not mini! They were quickly followed by the final course - 'Hubba Bubba' bubblegum ice cream with popping candy. It really did taste like hubba bubba and the little flecks of popping candy added crunch and a bit of fun! By this point it was 11.45pm and I was fit to burst, but the night was far from over! The Mad Chef himself came out to say hello and thank us - using as many profanities as humanely possible - and to let us know that soon, a live saxophone player would be standing on a table in the middle of the room, playing along to the dance beats still coming from the decks in the kitchen. Well, that's one way to end an evening! Just after midnight, with the sound of saxophones and swearing lingering in our ears, we piled out of Mini Bar and headed home. Mad Chef did a fantastic job creating an inspired and delicious menu, all the while mixing tunes and keeping his guests entertained. I can't wait for the next one!

You wouldn't expect a night with the self proclaimed 'Mad Chef' to be normal now would you? And far…read morefrom normal this night was. Initially I was confused as to the reason why he decided to call this little pop up venture "Audio Beef" but it all became very apparent when I stepped foot into Mini Bar. If you were after a quiet candle lit meal and a relaxing chilled out soundtrack to enjoy your 7 course feast well, you may have been a tad disappointed. Instead, Mad Chef and his posse managed to create a club vibe within the tiny Mini Bar. Not content with serving up some 30/40 people with 7 courses of punked up New York style street food, Mr Chef decides to blare out LIVE 90s style Chicago house & disco tunes all night with actual decks set out in the KITCHEN. Accompanied also by a LIVE sax player who got jiggy on the table tops at the end of the night, which made for one the most exhilarating dinners I've ever had. Its fair to say the man's multitasking skillz are other worldly. The dj-ing was spot as the chefs cooked away. All this was relayed out to the punters over a live feed on a big tv screen in the main bar. Its fair to say Mad Chef and his posse were having a right good time dancing about, playing cool retro tunes and, somehow, incredibly, dishing out some top notch grub. So I think I've set the rather interesting scene by now. In order to get into the groove it was probably best to grab a few drinks and go with the flow. At first, I must admit, I was a little unsure, but, as everyone started to relax and get into the spirit of things, it turned out to be one hell of a fun night. Right, onto the food! The menu consisted of 7 small plates, almost tapas style so you could get a flavour for everything without, I guess, getting totally stuffed. The menu was kinda New York / Americana inspired but with some pretty major and inventive twists. Take for example the wonderful corn chowder, but infused with some smokey pancetta, or the falafel with peanut butter and coconut, or Hubba Bubba ice cream with popping candy. My favourite dish of the night however had to be the Park Slope Patty burger with salted caramel and habanero puree. The burger packed an almighty chilli kick but was somehow balanced with an amazing sweetness. Its fair to say everything tasted wonderful and, with the last desert not getting dished up until 23:30 I'm glad I wasn't completely stuffed and bloated by the end of the night. It really was the perfect amount of food all served up by the wonderfully charming and friendly staff of the Mini Bar. If you want to try something totally unique, in terms of food and surroundings then this is the night for you. Mad Chef tells us that street food is all about soul, partying, getting to meet and mingle with new people and the man has a darn good point! This was a fun packed night that will definitely live in my memory for a long long time. A resounding 5 stars to you Mad Chef and your most excellent 'Beef Audio' night!

I was bullied into going here, to be fair, not one to actively pay several pounds for a sandwich (it's still just bread!) but I really enjoyed this wee place, with good service and more importantly, good food. We sat outside which was a delight, being on a nice day, and overall it was a nice experience. I'm rarely up here, but would go back if I was. Recommended.

My tum was still a-rumblin' however, and wouldn't let up, so I gave in. I got me a roast veg wrap, my friend a chargrilled chicken sandwich with coleslaw. When the slightly nervous server took out a whole chicken breast and started to carve it up, that's when I started to look at my surroundings in a new way. The coleslaw was devine and clearly homemade, and as I looked at the sandwich fillings spread out behind the sparkling sneeze guard, I suspected that they were all homemade and of the same standard. No fat encrusted subway bacon here! It has a little breakfast bar at the back to sit in, and aside from the nervousness of the server, both the people working there were very friendly considering I was only there for two tics. My wrap must have been one of the best - and affordable hurried lunch rolls I've had in town - definitely will go back.
