I must have hit them at a bad time. I had to switch from my favorite dentist, Advanced Dental Arts, due to a change from Essence that eliminated that dental office from their coverage ( from what I know the feeling was mutual). So I selected Nikodem dental, having heard good things about them from others. My first appointment was supposed to be for X-rays and cleaning, or so I thought. Turns out it was only for X-rays, and based on some "shadows" I was referred to an endodontist for further examination ( I never had any "shadows" from my favorite dentist, but I called the Endo anyway. Because there were 3 areas they were concerned with I was given an estimate by Nikodem of $270 for treatment at the Endo. When I finally was able to talk to them they told me they would have to take their OWN X-rays to confirm. That was priced at $700! Not the $270 quoted by Nikodem. Figuring Nikodem just was ill advised about the pricing, I told the Endo I did not accept that pricing for clarification of shadows ( they asked me which tooth had pain, and I told them truthfully there was no pain, just a shadow that might be suspicious). They said they would not accept the X-rays from Nikodem but had to do their own to clarify what to treat. And the cost of any deep cleaning would be extra and not covered by Essence Insurance. I thanked them and declined. A day later I got a note from Nikodem that they are renovating their offices and will be closed for the period from June 1 through the end of the year. My cleaning had been scheduled for early August so I stopped by the office to see what was up. They apologized and said they would eventually get to me and reschedule me, but the options were to go to the Crystal City or Ballwin offices for a cleaning, and advised me to call them once I figured out where I wanted to go. At this point I decided to restock and find another dental office. My favorite dentist offered an out of network price of $400 for X-rays and 2 cleanings earlier this year, so I'm going to review that before I do anything else. Then I'll look at Liberty Dental participants to see if I can find anything better/closer and not have to have a second set of X-rays that Essence will not cover. Needless to say, I'm really disappointed that Nikodem Dental never told me about this before my initial appointment, or I would have done something different. My friends were aware from late last year! So far, the changes to Dental coverage imposed by Essence have been totally unacceptable! I'll deal with them separately. I have been going to this practice since 2003 (before it was sold to Nikodem dental/gentle dentistry) and this is how they have treated me: I had an appt for 5 pm in February 2026. I left work early to go to the appointment; since I never received any call or text message confirming I called on the way there and was told the appointment had been cancelled with no notice nor any attempt at a notice. Made another appt for May 11 2026. Called that morning to confirm the appt and it was confirmed. Drove there for the 5 pm appt. The office was closed no one there. We trusted this office with our dental care, assuming they operated with integrity and professionalism. However, my recent experience with Dr. Ehrhardt and his staff has shattered that trust completely. Dr. Ehrhardt spent over a year and a half (across three visits) convincing me that I needed Invisalign--not for cosmetic reasons, but for a medical necessity to improve teeth grinding. I had already purchased mouth guards from him in the past, so I was clear from the beginning that I wasn't interested in unnecessary procedures. But he repeatedly assured me that Invisalign would provide significant health benefits. The entire time, he pushed the idea that this was a medical solution, not an elective procedure. He also emphasized that the treatment came at 0% interest, making it seem like a reasonable investment in my health. Based on his recommendations and my longstanding relationship with the office, I trusted him and moved forward with the treatment. What they didn't tell me--and what no one at the front desk disclosed--was that the financing they signed me up for had retroactive interest dating back to day one if not paid in full within 12 months. And not just any interest--a staggering 29% predatory rate. After making on-time payments for nearly two years, I was shocked to find that my balance had barely decreased. The original cost was $3,500, yet despite consistent payments, my remaining balance is still $3,100. That's when I realized that I had been misled into a financial trap--one that was never fully explained when I agreed to treatment. I had been under the false impression that I was making a health-based decision. Instead, I was steered into a deceptive loan with an interest structure designed to exploit patients financially. When I brought this to their attention, I expected at least some accountability from a practice my family has supported for over 10 years. Instead, their response was dismissive and completely unapologetic. They acted as if I should have somehow anticipated their deceptive financial terms, despite the fact that no one at their office had disclosed them. This level of dishonesty and lack of transparency is appalling, especially from a business that thrives on long-term, trusting patient relationships. Nikodem Dental has made it clear that they value profits over patients. They will: - Mislead you into unnecessary treatments under the guise of medical necessity - Fail to disclose critical financial terms before locking you into a predatory loan - Dismiss your concerns when you bring their deception to light This is not how an ethical medical practice operates. Dr. Ehrhardt and the entire Nikodem staff operate as sales people rather than medical care providers. When the Rock Hill location was independently owned by Dr. Wintermantel, the office took care of their patients but under Nikodem corporate ownership, patients are treated as cash cows. Dr. Ehrhardt convinced me over a year and a half (3 visits) that I needed Invisalign for medical reasons to improve teeth grinding. I had already purchased mouth guards from him previously. I told him I didn't want a cosmetic procedure. He emphasized the medical benefit and highlighted that it was at zero percent. When I went to the front desk to approve the procedure no one discussed the terms of retroactive interest to day one after 12 months at the usurious rate of 29%. After nearly 2 years of paying timely online my current balance is nearly $3100 ($3500 original balance) after speaking with Dr. Ehrhardt and the front desk I was under the mistaken impression that I was agreeing to a medically necessary procedure. The Hygeinists, though they are very nice people and very good in what they do, are the ones, most of the time, who will decide what type of care especially cleaning they will do. They don't check and consider your financial capability nor what your insurance will cover. At the end of your visit you will be surprised how much you will pay them then you get mail/bill from the insurance for another pay. They are poor and inconsistent of giving you copy of your Visit summary or breakdown of the work done - insist to get those just like what i said - you will get another bill from your insurance. They will try to schedule you 3-4x a year for cleaning/deep cleaning and xray every visit - which i turned down some X-rays. This office is in desperate need of some customer service lessons! They canceled the appointment that my son and I had one day prior to our appt because they said the dentist was going to a conference. I find it hard to believe they just found out the day prior to our appt. They could fit me in for another 3 months!! Next, called to cancel our "makeup" appt, the one that was 3 months later. Our appt was at 11:30 and I called at 8 am to cancel. I was given a snarky response to my cancellation saying that they required a 24 hour prior notice. I proceeded to say "well what do you want me to do? My son and I are sick." She said well you should have told me that. I said why do I need to give you a reason for me calling to cancel. I don't need to give you a damn reason? My calling was my courtesy and I was hung up on. I sent a complaint into their website and said that if I was going to be treated that way that I would want to have our family's records sent elsewhere and to have the dentist call me. I was responded to by the woman who hung up on me telling me that I should send the necessary paperwork to have my records sent to another dentist. No apology. I responded in disbelief. I have been going to this office since 1998 and cannot remember a time that I canceled or did not show up. I am still waiting for them to send my claims to my dental insurance from a visit 8 months ago! They randomly send me bills with no line items on it. I was not told a hygienist had not been hired so a dental assistant did my cleaning and it was so poorly done and I asked her if she did a Perio cleaning and she said yes which was a lie. So they were great 2 or 3 years ago and they were great. Since then, absolutely horrible. They moved to another location and ever since, the service has been horrendous. I had a front tooth busted out and needed an implant. They decided to have me stay with them instead of being referred to a periodontist. I needed bone and gum grafts, which I had done by a new doctor they had just hired. But once that was completed, I was told the only qualified dentist to do what I need keeps getting transferred to Springfield for months at a time and kept delaying treatment. Keep in mind, this is a front tooth so this is causing quality of life issues. Eventually, I had to go to another periodontist to get this corrected, but I had to redo the original bone and gum graft and now this is causing me to take over a year to recover. 1 year lost and no f*$%s given by them. However, in my recent experience with a cleaning and crown they were great--5 stars. Staff were helpful and friendly. The hygienist did a great job and was sensitive to my reactions. And the dentist was fast, gentle, and sensitive. Like many people, I don't like going to the dentist. I even get significantly nervous for cleanings. They made my experience as good as I can imagine. No problem got the email clicked on the link and it wanted a passcode I had no passcode so I called back and explain this to Alyssa and she became very rude and condescending she said she had sent what I asked for and if I couldn't open it then it could be my phone told her about the passcode and she says that nobody else has ever had a problem with opening any of those emails. well what she sent me needed a passcode .Asked her if we could just get a total of what we spent she said she didn't have time to do that . if she's in customer service why is she there and what does she have time for? She said she would send another one. This one had the PDF attached so we were able to add them up for ourselves. It was obvious that the focus was on money, not patients. She talked more about money/prices than the actual reasons I was there. Definitely NOT a warm, friendly vibe. For any of my lgbtq friends out there, find a different dentist. Rose was rude with me upon arrival about the fact that my legal name doesn't match my appearance. It was uncomfortable and unprofessional. They can do better. There's nothing wrong with treating people with respect, especially when they're giving you money in exchange for a service. I went to a different dentist after this and had an excellent experience about 15 min down the road with a much more professional dentist practice. TRICKING YOU TO SPEND MONEY. Only reason they get two stars is because they have few very nice workers that don't have bad intentions. One head doctor is a very cool guy and usually his assistants are great. But the rest of the staffs goal is trick you and make up you spend money and make you feel bad about your hygiene. I went with my granddaughter, age 25, to Nickodem Dental to get XRays and cleaning. I purchased Gateway Dental so that she could have access to dental care. It had been 3 years since she had had her teeth cleaned at Nickodem. The hygienist said that her teeth looked good, no cavities, but she refused to clean her teeth saying that she had too much plaque on back molars and she needed deep cleaning for $1300. My granddaughter does not have too much plaque, stains, or bad teeth by any sort of imagination. She has better oral hygiene than 95% if the population. She doesn't smoke, drink, or even drink coffee. Of course that course of action was totally out of the question!!!! The receptionists are very friendly and courteous but this hygienist was a joke. She even informed her that she had gingivitis after stabbing her with the tartar hook (yes it hurt) and caused her to bleed. She also tried to sell her an Oral B toothbrush. We were both so disappointed. Dental care CANNOT be all about upsale. Absolutely ridiculous care. Young adults can't afford dental care when they don't have dental insurance. Now we get to go somewhere else and pay for a full cleaning that they couldn't do today. Unfortunately, she won't be going back nor will any of my family ever again. read more

This is the first Yelp review I have ever written, but I wanted to warn others not to go to Nickodem. I have only had 1 cavity in my whole life. I made an appointment to have my teeth cleaned, but they refused telling my I needed a $1,000 procedure to have a deep cleaning, stating I have the beginning stages of periodontal disease. I agreed with many of the other reviews saying they obviously focus on money and not the patients. I went to another dentist after that visit that said it was not a needed procedure. Been going to this Nikodem office for more then 8 years. Went yesterday all new people. No consideration to call me and let me know that the lady that has cleaned my teeth there for years had left. Then I could have decided if I wanted the appointment or not. New hygienist does gum test tells me I need this special cleaning that my insurance does not cover. Tells me she can't do a regular cleaning it would be illegal. Then dentist (new also) comes in and tells me the same story and also I have bad filling. I ask him if he realized that he was looking at the same X-ray they took 6 months ago not the one they did when I came into the office yesterday. Then try's to switch over. Last time there that filling was fine. Seems like just trying to line there pockets with services not needed. Lady that I guess runs place now tells me that they were doing a disservice to me before. I never really liked going to the dentist. So much so that I went years without going. I read reviews of this place and it's so close to my house I figured I would suck it up and give it a shot. I have been here 3 times now (finally staying faithful to my every 6 month appointments) and I no longer dread going to the dentist. From the front desk staff, to the dental hygienist, and the dentist that does the final look-over, I have zero complaints. Everyone is really nice. My dental hygienist is Shawna (not sure if that's the correct spelling, sorry!) and she's great. She was very understanding of my anxiety about the whole situation the first time I was there and made me feel very comfortable. Even if I move, I'll continue going here. By far the BEST experience I've ever had, at ANY dental appointment--- I'm about as terrified as they come of dentists / and dental procedures. I've been holding off on this one for about two years, one of my teeth rotted completely into my gums, and was nothing but a gross rotted stump of a tooth. My other tooth was cracked open, and I could literally feel extreme shooting pain on the roots/nerves every time I took a breath, for nearly two years I lived in pain because of being afraid of the dentist. In the past, I've probably had the worst dental care as it comes, from free clinics in north city, to a dentist up in Clayton whom cost an arm and a leg just for a consultation/exam. All were painful, at times very rude, and the more expensive ones were condescending, pretentious, not to mention unskilled/abrasive, causing uncomfortable/painful experiences. All of my bad experiences with previous doctors/practices caused obvious hesitation and fear. Furthermore, one of my first experiences in my youth, I was physically abused by a dentist so an extreme paranoia/anxiety/distrust of the entire experience is inevitable during every appointment. Up until now, the best dentist I had been to was in Eastern Europe. (Bosnia) where I lived a few years ago. (which isn't saying much because the tools/resources they have available are pretty primitive) And hilariously enough, he spoke super poor english! :) I'm sorry, but our healthcare system in the US is a total joke, and up until now, I had lost all faith/hope in dentistry. I've been holding off on this procedure for years, and every day I've been in pain ranging from moderate to extreme (debilitating/bed-ridden pain) So here I am, I find Nikodem dental online because they're the most affordable extraction I can find in St.Louis for removing the two molars that have been causing me pain for a very long, long time. ---- I arrive: The staff / receptionists/ nurses. EVERYONE at Nikodems were totally awesome. Super friendly, personable, answered all of my questions without making me feel stupid for asking, didn't talk down to me/look down at me for not having insurance or being concerned about being able to pay for my procedure. They were amazing. There were a lot of people there, but as a new patient I showed up as they asked early, and they literally got me in RIGHT ON TIME. I'm so used to waiting around for hours and being treated like crap. Then on top of it, when the time came for me to sit in the chair, Dr. Hill, was UNBELIEVABLE. Dr. Hill is a MASTER of his craft/trade. He's a dental artist. Unbelievably talented, awesome guy. A total rock star. I want to send Dr. Hill a trophy, seriously. I'm in total awe at how easy/painless this went. I didn't even feel ANY of my shots, and after being numb I put on my headphones, and the procedure began (FOR TWO TEETH) two beastie boys tracks! I didn't feel a thing, he extracted the teeth, and I was out! I think it took maybe 5-8 minutes tops. Dr. Hill, if you read this, you changed my life! I'm a loyal patient for life. I have never written a bad review before, but this place was so horrible I had to make sure that others are given a fair chance in making a decision to go to this place. BUYER BEWARE!! At first sight, it seems great. The staff was great on the "Phone". We discussed the various packages that they offer for dentures, as that is what I needed. I decided on a package that was in the "middle" price range. When I arrived, I was pleased to see how clean and pleasant the waiting room was. I was thrilled and excited to be there since the price was affordable and I would be leaving that day with a pretty smile. The first woman I came into contact with was at the reception desk, she seemed short with me, but what did I care, this place was about to make me feel confident again by giving me back my smile, so I let it go and just kept on keeping on. The wait was short before they called me, now I was even more impressed and excited. I was led to a room by the woman who would soon rob me of all of my happiness for that day. (Spent the rest of the day crying and keeping myself off the edge of depression) She assumed I was getting the Bigger and More Expensive package and I told her no, I was getting the other one. She stopped writing on her paper and looked at me and said - "I can tell you right now you wont be satisfied. I have been doing this a long time and I can tell when people wont be satisfied" - She suggested I get the other package and I told her that I couldn't that I only came prepared financially for the package I chose. Then she suggested I go somewhere else. At this point, I had not even been sitting in the chair 2 minutes!! She stepped out of the room and spoke with the dentist and then they both came in. He did not speak hardly at all, she did all of the talking. He never once stepped in and tried to take control of the situation going on. I was totally blown away by all of this. I could not believe that they were not going to service me. She was rude, hard, harsh and with No compassion. The dentist was assuming No Control and seemed as if he did not care what was going on. I was so overwhelmed with disappointment and confusion as to what was going on that all I could do was cry. With the way all of this went down, it seems as though it was a bait and switch and if you did not go for it then they don't care to have you as a client. The questions I left with were - How does she know what I or anyone for that matter would be satisfied with? Why didn't the dentist take control? Why did he allow her to push out one of his clients? My experience with the people at this office has been nothing short of awful. I would never recommend this dentist office to anyone. OFFICE MANAGER IS EXTREMELY RUDE. Does not care about your personal life and ability to pay for work. They give each patient a "treatment plan." They tried numerous times to talk us into procedures and even went so far as to do them anyway on my brother and then demand payment, after we specifically said NOT TO. After we told them we couldn't afford certain aspects of their "treatment program" they very rudely told my mother to either do what they say or find another dentist. If you go here and they try to talk you in to a Perio Scaling, IT IS A SCAM. I researched this procedure and talked to another dentist about it. If they do not measure your teeth for the procedure and take specific X-rays for it, it's a rip of and not necessary. I know several people who have gone to this dentist and they recommend the perio scaling to everyone. One person couldn't even get them to explain properly what exactly it was when he saw it on his bill! Money hungry. And don't even think about talking to one of the dentists. They will not let you talk to anyone but the snobby office manager. Awful place. read more

This place has changed for the worst. The office manager is the rudest woman I have ever had the displeasure of encountering. The service I received on the day of my appointment was horrible. They had that wrong chart up and did not realize this until after talking about xrays and problems that didn't exist. THEN, when my own chart was finally pulled up, the dentist didn't even do my filling...the nurse did. I never saw the dentist again; he didn't even check her work. When I called to share how dissatisfied I was, the office manager talked down to me like I was a dog and offered me nothing. Every one that i tried would just rape my insurance for what it would pay for, then suggest expensive procedures that was out of my pocket for treatment. After tens of thousands of dollars and many painful procedures, I found Mikodem dental! I was amazed at how helpful and polite they were. The staff is very polite and knowledgeable of client service! I am retired military and expect respect and politeness. The front desk staff was so polite and friendly I felt I had known them for years, the very first visit. Dr Hill was very direct and knowledgeable about what services he recommended to resolve my situation. He gave me his idea of what treatments were required and the expense of it. I requested the estimate for more service than he had suggested. They were very helpful in helping me to decided how intense of a service I wanted performed. The expense of the services I received were a 1/3 of the estimates I had received for any of the other dental practices I had investigated! The procedures were performed very quick and surprisingly pretty painless for their intensity. Yes I was required to pay my portion of out of pocket expense up front. I don't blame them for requiring that! A garage won't finance your automobile repairs. A high end hairstylist won't finance your hair services. Why do people think they shouldn't have to pay for dental services at the time of the procedure also? I have recommended more than 3 of my friends and family to Mikodem, they all have been happy and very pleased with their services. I don't have much of a choice due to my dental plan and they are my assigned dentist. They are nice enough but what I absolutely hate is that they will demand payment while you are in the dentist chair. Make you get up to go pay before they do the work or be right in your face as you get up. This is just very low class behavior to me. Do they have people trying to run out or something? My insurance covers most things anyway. The dental assistant will spend the majority of your appt running around to make sure they charge you every penny they can instead of actually attending to you. And don't get me started on the likelihood that they will talk about removing teeth. Teeth that don't need to go but they are very proud of their denture service. My last appointment they stuck me in a chair that had a big hole in the material, You would think with all their denture money they could fix or replace that! read more
