Richard and Dallas Home Renovations is a solid contractor that can do a variety of projects to a perfectly acceptable level of quality. We hired them for a shower redo - this was a tile custom shower down to the studs. From early on, Richard came in with detailed email quotes that he regularly updated as we made decisions, and even as we progressed through the actual work and materials got locked in. From start to finish, the cost for labor never budged. I found his communication on pricing refreshing and comforting, especially as we opted for the strategy of purchasing our own plumbing and tile materials. Richard is a very busy man. His company appears to have a great deal of business, which is good for him. That does mean that he tends to rush around - he would appear and disappear in the blink of an eye. One time I was literally talking to him about something and he turned to follow one of his contractors out the door to ask him a question, and after a minute I looked and his truck was gone. He's not being rude, he's just busy - I learned to be comfortable with this. His workers did a very nice job on the project itself. As I work from home I was able to supervise much of the work and I could tell that they were doing a good job with an attention to detail. They handled problems efficiently and effectively and I've definitely seen worse tile work. In the course of the project they also installed a new recessed light fixture overhead and retrofitted an existing one to match, and did a great job at an excellent price. Most of the time, I was able to communicate just fine with the workers in English. We rarely had challenges. Richard did a little belatedly offer to send a licensed plumber and a licensed electrician, but assured me that the work was very basic and that his men were experienced. They did indeed do the work just fine. A couple of times the work was delayed or done out of order because we had a hard time coordinating with Richard to get the right supplies on hand at the right time. His workers occasionally had to re-do things. I chalk this up to Richard's busyness - he procrastinated picking up a contractor-grade accent tile that we had picked out, and then found it out of stock. It also took a while to meet him at a friend's place to get a remnant stone piece for a shelf, and so the guys had to cut a hole in their work when it finally showed up. In the end, I think these only delayed the finish of the project by a day, if even. Things only went meaningfully downhill at the very end of the job. I have no personal experience with tile work, unlike some other areas, so I did not catch them making a mistake in the grouting. We picked out a single grout color for the entire shower, and they got it in unsanded for the walls and sanded for the floor. The floor grout appears to have ended up the wrong color (much too light) - a bit mixed in a couple of plastic cups indicated this after the fact. Plus, the guys failed to properly seal it. I have since learned that you have to let grout dry for 3 days before sealing it or using the shower - this appears to be standard industry practice. They put down the sealer after a little less than 24 hours and told us we could use the shower immediately. The floor grout then dried to a patchwork of different colors. They came back and scraped some of the spots and regrouted, but the patchwork of colors remained. The grout absorbs water and darkens substantially in patches, then slowly dries throughout the day, but never fully gets to the same color. We'd be okay with the wrong color if it just were all the same color, but we tried showering in the other bathroom two mornings in a row to see if we could get it to dry to a solid and it never did. It may be beyond salvaging now. After a couple of attempts, Richard has not made a move. We originally finished the job on 1/14, then brought up the grout on 1/20. He finally came on 2/3 to look at it. On 2/24 he finally came back to look at it again and scheduled his guys to come look at it, but cancelled the next day and today it's 3/16 and I haven't heard anything. I think this is a wrap for us - I'll probably pick up a dremel tool and re-do the entire floor grout myself. In the end, I think that you could feel confident calling Richard to come in and look at a job and bid on it. Go in with your eyes open and knowing what to expect and I think you'll get solid quality at an excellent price.

We even know the owners personally and they still screwed us over, so imagine what they would do to you if you don't know them.... This was our first experience with a home insurance claim for water damage and John, whom we attend church with, coached us not to contact our insurance until their job was done, pay them as soon as they removed the last piece of equipment, and submit the receipt to insurance and insurance would pay us back. He said we would maybe have to push a little and send a few emails, but 100% of their customers have had insurance pay in full. He lulled us into a false sense of security, and add on top of this our trust in him because of knowing him personally, we believed him. BIG MISTAKE. We paid him upfront over $12,000 cash and insurance said the job was only valued at a little over $8000 so that's all they reimbursed us for, putting us out $4500! My insurance tried contacting them multiple times to have them explain the excessive charges, they ignored their calls. After speaking to John myself, Jeff finally answered my adjusters call who explained some charges, and John contacted me after saying my insurance agreed to pay the rest of the bill. ANOTHER LIE! I later found out from my insurance that my adjuster never said that and he would still not be paying on the full amount because it was outrageous compared to what it should be. John admitted to me on the phone how they hide extra charges into the cost of a fan or else insurance wouldn't pay them, which is what makes it look expensive to insurance, yet they won't be honest with the insurance companies about what costs they are hiding hoping insurance will just pay it. But then when insurance doesn't pay it because to them it looks like they are charging 4x industry standards for the cost of a fan it just bites the homeowner instead! In the end, I requested a refund from Rainy Day the difference and John brushed me off telling me to hire a public adjuster to continue to fight my insurance. He offered to pay up to $500 for their fee, but we would still likely pay much more than that because of the size of our claim as a whole and we don't want to risk losing even more money when insurance will most likely still say no. This whole thing could have been avoided if we chose a company that went through insurance, learn from our mistake! I have many many more grievances with the way this company took advantage of us and hurt us not just financially, but emotionally and mentally as well, but my point is DO NOT TRUST THIS COMPANY. Also, these good reviews are padded with people they know or who have worked for them. The review with the dishwasher leak and pictures is the owners own kitchen, and he didn't even pay a dime for it because he told me his business ate the cost of his repairs. We started a project with Brendan Kurtz who is the owner of the local company Celina Concrete (now known as Chicago Decorative Flatwork) in Sept 2021. We agreed upon concrete patio extension with overlay as well as side yard work. It is now February 2022 and we are still left with a mess and out thousands of dollars. Brendan and his crew failed to get the overlay and new concrete to match multiple times over the course of 3 months. We were patient and understanding as he continued to move on to other projects and would stop by when he had a lull in schedule - all while asking for final payment multiple times. (Mind you, by this point we had already made 3 payments to him). By December, he even sang a sad song about how he would have to close his business after he completed our project and another. Brendan hired an outside company to come sandblast our patio in order to start fresh again with the staining and sealing. This is the last we have heard or seen of him. We are now left with an unfinished patio with ruined overlay, ruined sod that he claimed he would replace, and stuck trying to find another company that can fix his mess. Instead of "closing his business", Brendan has now changed his company's name to Chicago Decorative Flatwork and continues to post new projects. He has also failed to respond to our report with the Better Business Bureau. We have given him plenty of time to do right by us, but alas - he is choosing to look the other way. We completed the requested service work and submitted a quote for additional permanent repairs. Despite repeated follow-ups since September 2024, our invoice for the initial service remains unpaid. We used their official work order numbers, documents, and IVR system, and our communication with them was consistent throughout the process. After the quote was declined, we were informed that internal issues within their company may have affected payment processing for certain vendors. We have documentation of these interactions, including recorded calls, but as of today, our invoice remains unresolved. Based on our experience, I would advise other vendors to request payment up front.
