Beautiful shop! The owner seemed very nice and helpful. A little pricey, but the yarns were upscale ~ lots of handpainted. She has a good selection of books and patterns. I visited Chicago to check out several yarn stores as I am planning on moving to the area later this year. Nina was one of the stores I visited and I am glad that I did. The young lady helping me, Sam, was very helpful and friendly. She pointed out some new stock and we carried out a conversation as I perused the store. The yarn is arranged in a very orderly fashion in a store with room to move around. There were display tables showcasing new yarns and a few knitted samples. The store also had some very pretty buttons as well as a selection of books. While I was in the store, another employee was helping someone with a project in the couches near the front. Overall, the store was well lighted and spacious, organized, with good customer service. read more

This is one of the nicest shops I have been to anywhere. This is a great store that has a wide variety of yarn that is well displayed. There are great high boy tables in the back to sit at and review patterns as well as good selection of knitting needles and crocher hooks. She has a small selection books in front of the store and a modest selection of single patterns - but they are all fun! This is such a friendly shop! Even before I was a knitter, I stopped in to buy yarn as a gift for my sister. They were very helpful and my sister was thrilled with the yarn. When I started knitting I went back - same great service and advice. Yes, the yarns are a bit more high-end and therefore pricey, but they're happy to help find something in your price range. Nina's was recommended to me by a friend. I contacted Nina asking if she could help me learn how to knit a baby blanket, she said she would love to help but recommended I take the beginner class first. I drug my best friend with me along to the beginner class and we both loved it. I really loved Jen who was super patient with me while I was learning. After completing the beginner project (scarf) I scheduled a private lesson with Jen to learn how to knit the blanket (the private lesson was only $25!!!). The private lesson was amazing, I told them via email what I was wanting to do - a chevron baby blanket, they found a pattern for me that they thought would be manageable for a beginner and taught me lots of new stitches. I've been back in Nina's shop probably 5+ time needing help along the way (they have never charged me for their extensive help!!) with my blanket or help when I mess something up and can't figure out how to fix it. Nina has been so helpful and patient with me. She is a great teacher. I have really enjoyed getting to sit in the knit shop and work on my blanket while getting occasional help from experienced knitters who come and hang out and bring their dogs. It is so exciting watching my blanket come together and I couldn't be more thankful that I found Nina's shop to help me along the way! read more

I've shopped here several times, as it is close to my office. The yarn selection is on the smaller side compared to other stores in the city and nearby 'burbs, but in a pinch, you can find something. However: please be advised that the store owner and her staff can be brusque at best, and downright rude at worst. I've found that unless I state that I'm buying a sweater quantity of something expensive, not only do I not get any help from the staff, but they seem to ignore me entirely. God forbid you just go in to pick up a pair of needles. There are other yarn stores in Chicago, owned and staffed by nice people who enjoy helping people. Shop at one of those stores instead. read more

I stopped by Nina last night five minutes before they closed to buy a pair of specialty needles. I knew exactly what I needed and wanted to support a local, female owned store. HOWEVER, I will never go to this place again. Even though the owner was letting people out of the store as I tried to cross the street, by the time I got there she "was closed." i know this sounds nit-picky, but as a daughter of small business owning parents, I found this sort of 5-minutes-prior-to-closing refusal a slap in the face in terms of customer service. I guess in this recession, Ms. Nina is doing just fine. The last time I went in there, last year, I was seeking some advice on a pattern I bought that was giving me some trouble. I bought some yarn (very pricey) and then asked for help with the pattern- the owner was a complete jerk. She looked over the work I had done once, asked me questions (that came across as accusations) and then said she couldn't help me. Wow. I'm done with this place. read more

From reading the reviews, I see too many people have had the same experience I had. The first time I shopped there I thought maybe Nina was having a bad day, because her coldness could have frozen you in the summer. So I went back a few months later and it was the same all over. I dont understand how or why she is so cold and unwelcoming to some and not to others, but she could have easily made me a customer, but she chose not to by her behavior. To be clear, it has nothing to do with her selection. It has only to do with her sour personality. Also, I've never seen the place busy. It's a shame. Oh great, it's another establishment you wish to enjoy in Wicker Park but you never fully do. Pros: -Great selection of high end and normal yarn -Complimentary rolling of yarn -Free patterns if you see something at store you would like to try to create -very clean and stylish Cons: -The two older women (owner and manager??) were very standoffish and not pleasant. I was standing there for at least 3 minutes (waiting to ask a question) and I was disregarded as they chatted away. Like the other reviews I saw here, I must agree that it felt as though one had walked into a country club dining room and suddenly people dropped their forks as you made your way (in average clothes). When I got to my question, the lady stared at me as if I were stupid. It was rather condescending considering the fact I am familiar with knitting and was ready to spend good money. I got the notion it was like, "yeahhh I have this business with my fancy stuff/equipment and I could care less blah blah you are not posh/rich looking enough, ughhh is it closing time??" As a Chicago native, this makes me want to face palm myself and jump into the time machine to go back to the 90's when we had much much less "hipster-ish" places. Wait, virtually none. -Not a wide selection on needles -Rather overpriced -The superficial switch turns on when the bill rings up high and it's all smiles -Need a better selection of knitting/crocheting guide books Overall, stick to another craft store like Jo-Anne's if you want needles or good everyday yarn. Nina Knit shop in UV is one of my favorite getaways on a rainy day or lazy weekend. The staff is so friendly and calm and always willing to help. I was working on a pretty challenging scarf and noticed a big error that I wasn't able to fix myself. I went into Nina's store and Nina was able to fix it up in no time! She saved me from having to rip out a lot of my work and showed me what I did wrong. Her shop is cozy and clean and she carries amazing yarns and patterns. I'm a pretty regular customer and will continue to frequent nina for all my knitting needs! read more

Nina is expensive and carries primarily the high end yarn. The shop is beautiful, but you're almost afraid to touch anything because it is so perfectly arranged. I have never had a negative experience at Nina, but I cannot afford to visit as often as I would like. I went to Nina today after passing by it for months. I was planning to pick up yarn and maybe needles to make a scarf. I was impressed by the selection but shocked by how rudely I was treated. I was spoken to as though I know nothing about what I was doing; the woman behind the counter was short with me and acted like I was being difficult and bothersome. I was on the verge of purchasing needles when I decided I could not support a business that treated me so badly. While the product at Nina is excellent, it is not worth the snotty attitude you will encounter. read more

It's worth the trip. Very nice yarn. Lots of knitted projects to view and get ideas. Staff was friendly and helpful, but not overbearing. Very easy walk from the blue line. The staff was very very helpful. Went out of their way to find the perfect yarn for my two projects. They let us wander around offering just enough attention to make sure we weren't feeling ignored. The store is beautiful and has a very nice selection. I came from Michigan on a visit, and would definently stop by again. I created an account so that I could review this yarn shop. I'm an extremely experienced knitter that came in looking for yarn for an afghan, and I really didn't feel welcome. I wandered the store a little before I was welcomed. I told them I was looking for a reasonably priced worsted weight yarn, and they just didn't have any selection. Everything was super expensive (even compared to other yarn stores in the city) and you can tell the women there think they're "elite" knitters or something. Perhaps they just think that plain yarns are not worth their time. Everything in there seems so sterile too, like you're not supposed to touch anything for fear of messing up the appearance. It's like you're being watched because you're a misbehaving child. So, after not finding anything in my budget and feeling judged I just left. I won't be coming back, that's for sure. read more

I'll start off saying that I've been knitting for 8 years, and though I still have a lot to learn, I've become very particular about the kinds of yarns I use. Nina fits the bill for me. Everything is high quality and if you just like looking at yarns, Nina finds the best and coolest yarns out there. It's a great place for me to find out what the newest and best thing to work with is and then decide what I want to do. Yes, it's expensive, but once you work with some of the yarns Nina has in her shop, you won't want to work with anything else. As far as the customer service, I've been there a couple of times when Nina is busy, but she always makes time for everyone and is always able and willing to answer any questions. If you want a yarn store where you can quick run in and out, this isn't the place for you, but if you want to talk knitting/crocheting and just relax and look at yarns, Nina's your store. read more
