Komoda was right next door to Kai Zan, a great omakase restaurant that frankly everyone needs to try, and when you do, everyone also needs to stop by Komoda before and after to shop (& digest while you're at it) to your heart's content! There are so many great items for you, your house, your self care, and a ton of great gift ideas for the loved ones in your life! I personally picked up a gorgeous airplant here, that's doing very well in my house now, and a set of beautiful cork coasters that I'm very excited to use as well! I have been coming here since the shop opened. Sherri (the owner) is really one of the finest people I have ever met. She makes great recommendations and is consistently kind and very skilled at how attentive (if at all) to be. The stock rotates fairly regularly and there is always some new, undiscovered gem that will be the perfect gift for someone on your gift-buying list, be it birthday, Christmas, Hanukkah, going away, etc. There is truly something for every taste. "Can we go to Komoda?!" my date asks after leaving Tommy's for lunch. I had no idea what it was and she compared it to Urban Outfitters but not as gay-her words not mine. She also said she would buy everything in the store if she could. She also yelled out, "Yelp!" after seeing the 'People love us on Yelp' sticker on the window-which attests to her growing affection for Yelp. Anyway, the store reminds me of hodgepodge of apothecary, stationary store, toy store and assorted bric-a-brac store. It's a small space but it is filled with so many different items but arranged so well that it doesn't seem cluttered. The cards can be a little weird but I still really enjoyed it, the books also had the same slightly skewed range of topics, a little weird but interesting. 'Armchair quarterback playbook,' 'Stuff every man should know' definitely an interesting selection along with other books that didn't really hold my attention. The jewelry section was what caught my date's attention which was really vast, but the display also had a collection of Buck knives as well as a lot of different lotions and perfumes, as well as some shave oil and other grooming items. The cosmopolitan mix of clothes, books, toys, stationary, jewelry and lotions is enough to earn three stars right off the bat. What else stood out was the service. My date asked where the owner's dogs were and she said they were home that day. Funny thing is that someone else came in a few minutes later and asked the same question. She still gave the same chipper reply that the dogs were home today. She was super cheerful and also ran her store the way she wanted it wanted it to be run which also impresses me. The thing that puts Komoda over the top I can sum up with the following anecdote: My date really liked this little robot toy that she wanted to buy but her practicality wouldn't allow. I surreptitiously took the little thing off the table and when my girl was busy looking around I managed to get the owner's attention while she was unpacking merchandise gestured for her not to say a word and gave her my credit card. She rang it up and even wrapped it by the time my date was ready with her purchase. It was funny that she got nervous for me but she managed to put the beautifully wrapped soon to be gift out of sight, rang my date's purchase up, hid my receipt out of the sight of my girl's eyes and then packed my stuff into a bag before my date could even notice what was in my shopping bag. I can't express just how above and beyond she went it's an effort like this that would keep me coming back. read more

I think I found a gift store that I know I can always come to in Chicago! The store is small but packed to the gills. There really is something for everybody here and the store's owner is very willing to help you find anything you need without being pushy. They have gifts ranging from puzzles to grooming products, soaps and candles to pocket knives and jewelry. There are children's gifts as well. I found a super cute postcard in the collection as well as an adorable small juicer to use for lemons, limes, etc. You should take the time to look through everything because there is so much available! There are so many unique gems at this place - whether you're looking for a gift, just treating yourself, or want something new for your home. Note: you should be prepared to pay a little more than you might typically be used to but also keep in mind it's a local shop with things you probably won't find elsewhere for the most part! I went here when I was waiting for my bro-in-law to show up at the framing place across the street. Initial impression I had was that this would be one of those overpriced boutiques that would have lots of useless things and a few neat things that were way expensive. Fortunately that's not what it was actually like. There are lots of neat things, and a few were pricey, but most things were at a real good price. Ended up getting a scarf for a present and the recipient liked it a lot, and it was a great deal. It was also wrapped up (and very nicely) at no extra charge. I also got an bromeliad. The shopkeep has a big table of air plants, all in good condition, and many kinds I haven't seen before. You can tell that they are well loved. So I'd say this is definitely worth going out of your way, if you need a gift or just want to get something fun for yourself. read more

I feel like Sherri and I hit it off right from the start when I pulled up on my motorcycle by her store. I was on the hunt for a few birthday trinkets while she was catching some fresh air with her son and doggies. She approached me with her son, who is a blossoming motorcycle enthusiast as well! The jewelry selection caught my eye right away and I felt like I might have to be torn away from the cases. Now I know where to go for all future gift giving occasions when I want to include a lovely and unique trinket. Cool rings and necklaces, all in a reasonable price range. Sherri was great in helping me pick out some pieces, mellow, helpful, not pushy, and knowledgeable of the merchandise. There seems like there is a little something for everyone within the walls of her store. Not just for girls either, plenty of nice gifts to give to a man. And if you know me I am quite the sucker for pets at the workplace. The doggies were chill and happy to be around their family. Her son is also totally adorable and a great little shopkeeper! Any port in a storm, as they say, right? This port was my port of call, not just an oasis for a desperate lady, though it was that too. After the most hellish commute ever (it's rough when you're so white that your car becomes an involuntary tanning bed, set to char), and in need of a wedding shower gift for a very obscure bride, Komoda became my savior. I'm sure Sherri could smell my insanity a mile away, and I'm sure I confirmed it when I began rambling about the insanity of the task at hand. I will spare the rest of you the details, but a wedding shower a week before the wedding can be stressful. I think the doggies could smell my desperation as well, because one of them gave me a very knowing lick to comfort me. Sherri was able to talk me down from the ledge a bit and talk me through the gift purchasing process. I, of course wanted a billion things in there for myself, but managed to sneak out without too much damage. My favorite find was the sweet little deer printed wrapping paper. A definite keeper! I come back every time were in Chicago. After moving to Texas I realized that I'd never find a cozy nook like Komoda. I could spend hours in there looking at every item, which tells you everything is carefully picked. The owner is awesome and has a great aura, there is something for everybody and everything- this is the only place I can find beautiful and unique earrings(being an earring fanatic). After getting broken in, I had to begin my earring collection again, first stop, Komoda. I bought my pair and the owner gave me a pair :) I cherish ever piece I have. My 10 yr old is just as hooked, so we make it a point to stop by every visit. There are plenty of shops but Komoda feels like home. read more

As a guy, this has got to be one of the best places in Chicago to go when I'm looking for that special gift for my fiancee. The prices are right in line with my budget, there's a vast selection of items in the store, from perfumes; soap; jewelry; incense; books...basically items that you don't really see anywhere else. I recently purchased from Komoda a huge bar of olive oil soap (pre de Province--Marseille) and a dish for it to sit on. My fiancee, Jen, thought it was the perfect addition to our bathroom. She really likes the soap because of the moisturizing compounds mostly consisting of olive oil. I use it because it leaves my skin feeling clean but not dry, especially after shaving. Awesome! My overall experience with Komoda always leaves me feeling as though I've been on a journey to another part of the world: Remember Harry Potter in his earlier movies when he goes to 'Diagon Alley? He exclaims, "...It's like magic!" Well, that's one of the ways that I feel about going into Komoda. On my last visit there and speaking with Sherri (the shop owner, who has this uncanny ability to remember her customers by first names), I told her that coming into her shop was akin to going to visit my aunt as a child. My aunt had so many different and wonderful things to examine and explore; it was the equivalent of an adventure...exciting; mysterious; loads of fun; nice smells--like I could just stay there forever. Anyway, this is a great place to shop where you not only get great customer service (direct from the owner herself), but you walk out feeling as though you know that you'll be back, even if you didn't make a purchase. When I first visited the shop I didn't make a purchase. Just merely made observations. When I walked out I knew I would be back. And I have every since (three years). My bet is that once you walk in, you're hooked. Sherri and Dominick are as down-to-earth, warm and friendly as you could expect. Dominick is behind the scenes and works the technical end of the business (Hope you have the chance to meet him at some point--cool beans). BTW--Keep your eyes peeled for their online store coming very soon! This place is a gem filled with a myriad of mini-gems! Komoda hosts an array of gift items for men, women and children. I visited recently for the first time, searching for a birthday gift. The shop's owner, Sheri, was helpful yet unassuming. She introduced me to her fantastic collection of candles, soaps (some of which are made locally!), personal fragrances and unique cards. Komoda carries the Tokyo Milk brand, which is sure to please anyone on your gift list with an array of personal care products. The prices are superbly fair, which makes arranging the perfect gift package all the more enjoyable. If you live in West Town/Humboldt Park, this should certainly be your most-frequented shop. Dear Komoda, Based on my previous successes with Komoda, I am now permanently stuck in birthday gift buying procrastination mode. Who says you have to think long and hard for the perfect birthday gift? Not me! I trust to the furthest extent of my gift giving potential, that you will always have the birthday gift I can't wait to give. And given your proximity to me (exactly a block away) and ease of gift selection, I now wait until the absolute last minute to buy gifts for my near and dear friends and family (as in picking up the gift on the way to the party). And as such, I will need you to extend your store hours to 7 on Saturdays, possibly 8; or even 9. At least. I shudder to think what would have happened if I had decided to stop by for my brother's 40th birthday gift on the way to his surprise party at 6:00 like I originally intended to and found the store closed. I surely would have cursed loudly and kicked something. But, the fear of showing up with some lame card from CVS and possibly a battery charger urged me off of the couch and around the corner to Komoda (while Law and Order was on, mind you) with a whole hour to spare before you dimmed your lights and locked the doors. You have yet to fail me. A wonderful box o' buddist-related trinkets for my mom last year; a handy and original do-it-yourself duct tape wallet for my college buddy in Baltimore. There was an item that I wanted to ship to a friend in MI in time for Christmas and I called up Komoda and got a prompt call back from Sherri who assisted me with the over-the-phone sale. She sent out the item immediately and it reached my friend in time. About a week later I received a brief follow-up communication asking if she had received the package which I thought was totally wonderful and kind. Super cute store that also happens to be right around the corner from where I work! The owner is fabulously nice and worked really hard to find something my impossible-to-shop-for boss might like for her birthday. I also love that they gift wrap for you and make it look so nice! I'm a dog lover, so her pooches hanging around the store was a bonus treat for me, though I can imagine some people might not love it. The items in here are definitely for those who like fun, unique items. I would shop for my friends here in a heartbeat, but it's tough to find something for the older crowd or anyone who maybe isn't artsy enough for handmade jewelry. This store, though small has kept me captive for an hour before. They have my favorite favorite perfume of all time... this deep french vanilla imported from paris that come in a small floral bottle. I picked up a fruity scent for my sister. I love the handmade and printed cards -- they have a unique and nice selection. The jewelry is nice and the books are fun to look through.
