She repeated that we could only go to the bar with our party of 8. I again said that we would come in separately as separate entities. She said no again because we already told her we were together. after much debate she finally agreed with an attitude. We sat down and we were served immediately with drinks and our food. Server was friendly but hostess did not smile or say thank you etc when at our table. the other table was not served food until an hour and a half later when we were leaving. I believe this was intentional. A colleague gave me a gift certificate for this establishment. I live in the north towns so it took a while to get to this neighborhood. It has the familiar Buffalo neighborhood bar feel. We went on a week night around 7 pm. The place was not full but they told us it would be a wait for wings to be served. We decided to wait because we don't get out this way very often. We ordered fries as well as the wings. They brought us our beers right away. Then the fries and finally the wings. The wings were meaty and crisp. We ordered hot for the sauce. If you're looking for good chicken wings, this place is great. They don't have many options; you can get some appetizers and mild, medium, or hot wings. We got medium wings and french fries. Both were delicious. The wings were crispy on the outside, tender and juicy on the inside, and had great flavor. I didn't even need to dip them in bleu cheese or ranch! The only downfall to this place is the wait. We went on a Thursday and got seated right away, but it did take a while for our food to come out. Everyone always wants to celebrate the wings and trash the service here. Since the record on both of those topics is replete, I'll merely touch on them and move onto the praise for and gripe with 9-11 I have to offer in addition. It's a fact that the wings here and something special. They're made really crispy, and the house sauce is tangy, spicy, delicious and has the sex appeal of Lucy Liu beating you senselessly dominatrix style with a carbon fiber rod with leather tassels. And as for the service, this place seems to have a "go f*ck yourself" kind of attitude that some may find off-putting. I on the other hand, want to talk about how terrific the fries are here. They must be hand cut, they're golden brown and they have this wonderful season blend on them that's to die for. They're so perfect, it's almost like the outer "shell" is crispy/chewy and the inside melts in your mouth like goo, if that makes any sense to you. Instead of beating up the service, I'm going to complain about the cleanliness. This place is a real DUMP. I'm no stranger to dive bars, but the inference in most dive bars is you'd be crazy to eat any food that isn't safely enclosed in a peanut shell in a community bowl on the bar top. Since not eating these wings and fries would be the stupidest decision you make all night, you're forced to turn a blind eye to mountains of cobwebs, dust and filth. The toilets here would make Shrek disgusted, if he could fit past the steel urinal filled with pennies to use the toilet lit with a table lamp on top of the tank, which he couldn't. They have a shuffleboard that dominates the bar area. There are leagues that play with players with ages from 20 somethings to 80 somethings. Be careful to not stand anywhere near the game (which is a tall order). This place is where you go if you want to discuss 911 theories, or drink a drink for all of those who died on that horrible day. Down the road is the seven eleven tavern, when you go if you want to drink a Big Gulp. Then there's the 10 to Eleven tavern, which rings its "last call" bell at, you guessed it, 10 til Eleven. And of course the Eleven Eleven opticians, which can't promise to give you perfect vision, but can promise that if you only have 10 10 vision, that it will make your vision 10% better, or one tenth of the way to the much-coveted 20 20 vision. OK, none of the aforementioned is true. But, I heard the wings here were amazing and famous and all of those classic superlatives, so I stopped in to check them out, and they were pretty good. I'm surprised that so many people rave that they are the best in town though, because they were not in that category for me. Delicious, delicious wings in South Buffalo. Their menu is super simple: wings, burgers, chicken tenders...and I'm pretty sure that's about it. They don't try to do a million things, but the one thing that I can definitely vouch for is that they do wings extremely well. This isn't your Duff's or Anchorbar...it's better! Delicious, yet simple wet rub and very meaty pieces of chicken. I can only speak of their medium/hot rub. I think their blue cheese is house made as well. The best part? An order of 10 won't cost you over $1+ per wing like at the formerly mentioned. Nope, totally reasonably priced at around $8 per ten or around $14.99 (I think) for 20. They have some seating inside or you can sit at the bar. The place resembles a dive (which you can confirm for yourself by visiting the bathroom), but aside from a more or less rundown toilet, the place is kept pretty clean and the staff is superbly friendly. LETS GET RRRRREADY TO RRRRRUUUUUMMMMMBBBLLLLLLLLLLLEEEEE!!! What is the one question every tourist in Buffalo will eventually ask: "Who makes the best wings in Buffalo?" There are literally thousands of choices in town and they are all pretty damn good, because wings are tough to screw up. While many people will quickly spew forth their favorite, one must delve a bit deeper and ask why that particular wing is their favorite. Perhaps that person grew up on those wings, and has more of a nostalgic attachment to them. Or maybe that person has limited exposure to all of the options out there, only trying a few of the myriad choices. Normally, locals stick with the pizza place which is nearest to them and delivers to their home. However, there are a few joints in town whose raison d'etre is to create high quality wings, becoming a destination location because of those wings. One of the first names that always comes to mind is the Anchor Bar, the original and creator of the fried chicken wing served with hot sauce and bleu cheese, with a side of carrots and celery. While this has become more of a tourist destination than anything else, their wings are certainly of a superior quality. Another perennial crowd favorite is Gabriel's Gate in Allentown, whose wings are both crispy and delicious. While everyone has their favorites, mine has always been Duff's, as is made abundantly clear by my Ode to Duff's in a previous review. However, as I heard rumblings about the 911 Tavern being a contender, I knew I had to take the trek to the Irish Section of South Buffalo to sample their goods. God help me! So on what criteria does one gauge the quality of wings? First off the quality of the chicken wing qua chicken wing. A wing that is too big tends to not get crispy, and sometimes is a bit raw in the middle. However, too small means you're not getting enough meat. Furthermore, sometimes a cook does something silly with the wing like breading it (Hooters now deceased) or trying an avant garde technique like preparing them confit (Rocco's Pizzeria). In reality, the sauce is the thing, wherein you'll catch the conscience of the wing. The basic recipe is Frank's Red Hot Sauce and butter. I will also remove BBQ pit wings (from LaNova's, and now a million other copycats), and any flavored wings due to their being non-traditional. However, that is not to say a contender can't modify the "sauce" by adding additional ingredients. Duff's is the whole package, quality wings, cooked just right, the perfect proportion of hot sauce and butter, a vat of high quality bleu cheese and the crispiest bowl of perfectly salted shoe-string fries you will ever eat. 911 Tavern is primarily a bar, which I guessed stumbled upon an incredible wing recipe. There is nothing fancy about this place, and it is about a quarter of the size of your average Duffs. I tried their garlic fries and I loathed them. The fried garlic powder makes the fries bitter and even with a healthy dose of vinegar it would not cut through the bitterness. Furthermore, they were cut in the style of steak fry, being way too starchy. Of course, while shoe-strings are my personal preference, you may feel different. My 8 year old dining companion ordered the mild wings, which I thought also were sub par. They were far too buttery, lacking sauce. They even had a mild "fishy" flavor to them, which I assume is because they fried a fish in the same oil, Yet that is merely speculation. On the other hand, my hot wings were SPECTACULAR!!! While there is a healthy dose of butter that seeps through (and works quite well), there are additional flavors which I can only guess are brown sugar, cinnamon, Worcestershire, and Romano cheese (once again merely speculation). These wings are sweet, spicy and buttery all at once! They were just the right size, and cooked perfectly. The final verdict: Duffs: Better all around fighter, creating the ideal location to destination dine on wings. 911 Tavern: Hate the location, hate the fries, but the hot wings are definitely better than Duff's hot wings due to the phenomenal hot sauce. Overall, you can't go wrong at either location, and no matter what your wing preference is: "You're gonna eat lightning, and you're gonna crap thunder!" We ate at a table in the dining area in which the room has very green decor like a lot of South Buffalo bars. It was essentially golf themed. Cleanliness was not an issue in this dive. Beer was ice cold and very reasonably priced for non domestic. Very limited menu. I think it was fries, pizza logs, burger, and wings. They don't even have BBQ flavor for the wings. I'm not complaining about any of this since they're sticking to what they're good at. Ordered fries that were amazing. Big ol helping on a large plate. I could've eaten them forever. Got hot and medium wings. Loved them. Big plumpy meaty wings. Hot gave me a minor sweat but they're by no means suicidal. Perfect spice. I loved how they were mainly dry with a perfect amount of sauce (unlike Duffs where you basically get chicken wing soup with wings in it). I still think the best wings in WNY go to Bar Bill in EA but these would be second to me. Finally got to play shuffleboard in a Buffalo bar. Place is loaded with old school sports memorabilia and i'm not talking fancy jerseys but more like random plaques of Roberto Clemente and Sabres 98' t-shirts. Staff was extremely attentive and friendly. If that isn't divey enough for you take a gander into the single person bathroom with one toilet, two doors complete with an AIDS awareness poster and updated schedules for the Bills, Sabres and NASCAR. The food here is the bomb.com. I'd have to say this is my favorite place for wings in all of Buffalo for a few reasons: 1.) I've always been a crispy wings guy, and these are done to perfection. 2.) The sauce is uniquely done here. 3.) The presentation. Nine Eleven Tavern is cash only establishment as others have mentioned. No cards accepted. Sadly, they do not offer them in BBQ which is usually my go-to. They keep it simple with hot, medium, or mild. But the wings are large and consistently done right. The place is a little divey, which may or may not be your thing. The service is OK. Food has been served without silverware and a triple order of wings came out with one blue cheese. The vinegar, while offered with fries, is white not malt. Details, details. They offer a small menu with fries, some sandwiches, and I think I saw some salad in addition to the wings. But the wings are the real reason to come here. Note, and most people may not care about this but, the presentation on the wings is really fun. While most place bring you a pile of wings, Nine-Eleven plates them artistically with celery surrounding a center of blue cheese. Stopped by here before annual City of Nights for some wings after hearing from so many fellow Yelpers and South Buffalo friends that this is the place where the best Buffalo wings are made. The heat level for their sauce is very low so I am fairly certain I could have handled medium. The wings were so delicious! So crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside.
