I was delighted to eat here for the first time! I joined a big group and we were served a set menu, so I don't know all the exact names, but this was the best sushi I've ever had. I genuinely enjoyed everything that came out. I've never enjoyed raw seafood on sushi. I'm a basic shrimp or crab girl but somehow this place made me completely love every sushi dish they served. One roll in particular was wrapped in rice paper with a slice of lemon on top, and that was my favorite by far. They also served a variety of appetizers: pork skewers, fried rice, edamame, Brussels sprouts and those were phenomenal too. Went on a Saturday night and made reservations. It was very crowded so I recommend reservations. We were seated on time and our server promptly greeted us and explained the menu and suggestions. Elegant and Minimalist Sushi spot in San Antonio. Right behind the restaurant there is a parking garage, very convenient when you are in downtown. This review is going to be bitter-sweet, because I got horrible service at the bar but excellent service at the restaurant. The bar tender that helped us was very anal about certain things, never smiled and did not know how to speak to customers. But at the restaurant, the girls were amazing, they really make this place better. They are a little strict about the happy hour menu and where you can be seated. So if you are ordering from the Happy Hour Menu you cannot sit at the restaurant, you must to sit at the bar or by the sushi chef. Little weird rule. Second time eating at this sushi restaurant and really enjoyed it! It was a Friday evening, around 7:30 PM so walked it and it was about a 20 minute wait for 3 people. Not too bad! Service is always great here. Hosts and servers are very welcoming and kind. Tried the lemon special roll, which was so so good and yummy! Downtown residence for 15 years and in hospitality for over 30 years. The food was incredible and the service at a different level! Cin went to the website and saw a vegetarian option when we were driving to the restaurant. We put in our order with Kayla (if I was not retired, I would of STOLEN HER AWAY FROM NINETEEN!) WOW. When Cin placed her order, we could tell something was wrong, but ROCK STAR Kayla said she never heard of that on the menu, but she would check with the chef. She came back to tell us that dish had been discontinued a while back, but she would talk with the GM and chef for a resolution. She came back with the GM to tell us they would honor Cins request, as they had everything to make the dish. The ship sails as the captain sails it. Nineteen Hyaku has become our go-to sushi restaurant in SA. Big beautiful room with excellent service by a friendly and knowledgeable staff, from the captain right down to the waitresses. I recommend taking a table - there is a sushi bar, but we didn't notice the chefs interacting with the customers as might happen at a chef-owned traditional place. We had the "Chef's Choice" small handrolls (not the traditional cones; hard to split but you can do it if you try) and robata skewers - everything was super. Not quite full, so we added on a Hyaku Spider. Dessert was a Kakigori ice and fruit treat (domestic and not Japanese ice, but hey, it's the Hill Country and we do have the best water anywhere). You're going to pay a little more here than in neighborhood spots, but we deem it worth the difference. read more

First time going here and once you go in it's very open and welcoming. Staff is super friendly and attentive. It is very clean and nice lighting. Seated pretty quickly and given water immediately. Waiter came within 5 minutes he did very well checking in us and recommending things in the menu. They will make common sushi rolls if you aren't able to find anything you like or prefer. This is a very cool restaurant. There is an upstairs that opens to the extremely high ceilings. The dining room downstairs is quite large with a variety of seating options (tables, booths). The bar on your right when you first enter is gorgeous and they make delicious cocktails. One star off for noise as the very high ceilings make for a loud atmosphere. We went for restaurant week. Where as other spots in town offer full plates for the same cost. This place failed to deliver. And for $55 a person the plates were incredibly small and the flavors subpar. Similar to Sushi from HEB. Started off poor with water that tasted fresh from the tap. Had to ask for bottled water. Service was fine. And the ambience is of a nice restaurant here in San Antonio. But the food doesn't deliver. If you want overpriced "posh" food waste your money here. They have valet parking , but there's a parking garage behind the restaurant that you can park at as well. I started off with the lychee Mojito. I felt like it was too sweet for me. For Appetizers, we had shishito peppers and brussels sprouts. The brussels sprouts were definitely the favorite. They had great flavor and the serving size was pretty big. For our main dishes, we shared the upscale roll, Lemon kani roll and the chef choice nigiri and a chutoro hand roll. By far, the upscale roll was our favorite. The menu consists of small plates, delicious and great for allowing tasting a wide variety of dishes. We ordered from almost every section! I will say the food was good but our waitress did not know the menu and could not explain the menu. When asked her questions she would say descriptions of the color of the fish and we would then ask is that tuna? Almost felt like we were playing charades or being punked. I would expect more of a server at a restaurant of this caliber. The ambiance was nice. We did not feel rushed. I liked most everything we got. "I Trust You Chef" -- that's what the menu says next to the omakase option, a set of ten courses of sushi, plus a generous bowl of edamame and a dessert. This is a great way to surprise yourself and branch out. What you see in my photos is omakase for two people. The later courses, especially the pork belly and salmon, were quite filling. Our server mentioned that the omakase menu changes every few days. From our set of dishes, the tuna and the scallops were standouts, with melt-in-your-mouth seafood layered over tender rice and graced with soy, vinegar, ginger, green onion, etc. Entering Nineteen Hyaku is a heightened experience. It feels special to be there. Like the sister restaurants (Little Em, Upscale) there is careful attention to colors and finishes. The servers did a good job explaining the omakase dishes as they came our. It was a team approach to keeping things moving from the kitchen and making sure our needs were taken care of. It would be fun to come back and pick specific items from the menu. Downsides. The music felt bit too loud for easy conversation. Also, on our visit, the bathrooms were not as clean or fresh as they should have been. Parking: You can enter the garage at the Jefferson Bank building from N. Alamo street; it's a right turn if you're heading southbound; they validate inside the restaurant. At peak times there is a valet stand on E. Grayson, heading westbound, between N. We felt like having Japanese for dinner tonight. Houston helped us with our reservations, and we were set. Valet parking is available, but we found street parking with no problem. Chelsea was our wonderful and knowledgeable server. Found out later that she's the first employee. Dad had a Lemonade, I had the Lychee Mojito, and hubby had tea. Dad and hubby each had the Miso Soup. We had the Shrimp Tempura, Chasu skewer, Tako/octopus skewer, Wagyu Hot Stone, Oysters, Budo Hiramasa, Uni, and Hiramasa (a type of yellowtail). Chasu and wagyu were melt in your mouth good! Oysters done well. We had a couple of treats like the Squash Tempura and Brussel Sprouts. Calamansi pie was the best sweet ending! Beautiful interior and ambiance for date night. We had reservations for omakase on a Friday night to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The omakase reservation has to be pre-paid and only options for a 19 course. We had a wait a little bit to get seated although the omakase area was pretty empty. The waitress took our drink orders immediately, but took forever to bring them! You can find an assortment of Japanese whiskeys and mainly sake. Going into the omakase, I do say every palate cleanser is counted a course. There were about 9 nigiri, 2 palate cleanser, 1 salad, 4 cooked course, and 2 dessert course. Not sure what the last one is, although I've gone through my pictures over and over.... Still coming with 18 courses unless the warm towel is included. Yes, I was still hungry afterwards, but because the omakase took about 2.5 hours I just wanted to go home. Food overall was okay with the nigiri being the highlights. Giving them 4 stars since everyone was welcoming and nice (but very slow). Also, this is the only omakase spot in town so I want to promote this more in San Antonio hoping other places will start opening up! Next time, I may come for just the nigiri and rolls! read more

A cute Japanese restaurant within walking distance to The Pearl shopping and dining area. Nineteen Hyaku has a very minimalistic design with a great menu. In fact, the menu was so great that I could not decide what to order. It also looks like there is additional dining space upstairs or it could be a private event space (it would be very cool to have an event here). We got the Chutoro Handroll, Budo Hiramasa, Gyoza, Agave Akamai, one King Salmon nigiri, and the Lemon Kani roll. Everything we got was extremely fresh and was melt-in-your-mouth buttery soft. The handroll was more like a taco where the toppings were placed atop vs a cone shape that I was expecting. This made it a little difficult to eat without all the fish falling out. The gyoza had a little hint of squid ink in each bite without being too overpowering. Everything on the menu looked great - I am looking forward to coming back and trying the chirashi bowl and more rolls! read more

We came here on a Friday afternoon for lunch. It wasn't too busy, but it was the day before Veterans Day. I think Friday is the only day they are open for lunch and I think even that is new. We were fortunate to find street parking. There is a garage nearby, but not sure what it costs. It's not too far from the surface lots near The Pearl under 281. We were sat right away. The restaurant was bigger than I expected, but still pretty small. I think there were stairs near the front door, but not sure if that led to more seating. We started with miso soup, gyoza, and a couple of oysters. My wife got the snow crab temaki and I got the chef's choice premium nigiri which came with seven pieces, I think. The miso soup had more seaweed than I have ever had in a miso soup, but was good. The gyoza and oysters were amazing! The sushi was great. The nigiri was shrimp, a few different dishes, and avocado. The restaurant itself is beautiful and was excited for the possibilities! At first the service was slow, but we didn't think much of it. We finally ordered after about 20 minutes. To set the scene, the restaurant was mostly empty. There were a few large groups but less than half of it was full. After 30 minutes one guy from our table received one dish. He ended up eating it so it didn't get cold even though it was awkward all of us watching him eat, but then the rest of us sat there for over an hour without any food and when we asked about it, they just said the "the dishes will come out as they're ready". An hour and a half after we got there all of us received the first of their food, except one person... we understand the delays happen, but the strange part was the restaurant never acknowledged how weird the delay was or tried to make up for it in anyway. And the most bizarre part of the whole thing was, they charged an automatic gratuity which at first we assumed was standard for a group of seven but then later we come to find out, they didn't charge automatic gratuity for another table that was the same size, which seems completely unethical, especially after everything that happened.
