I was here for lunch in Nov 2022. The door was either jammed or locked and without the open sign I might have assumed they were closed. The sign caught my eye driving down the street as amusing. Everyone always claims to be the best but few put it in their restaurant name. It amused me enough to give it a shot. Despite the restaurant sign, I don't see any Japanese food on their menu. The name here (and menu name) do not say Japanese so I assume their they had it and it went away or they are not motivated to change their sign. That's probably a big deal to anyone driving by who sees the sign and stops in but wasn't for me. Their menu is pretty diverse but standard "American" Chinese fare. Ended up getting Sesame Chicken, Hot and Sour Soup, Beef Chow Fun, Walnut Shrimp and 2 orders of spring rolls. Without specifying, the Sesame Chicken came as a lunch portion (which makes sense, I went at lunch and didn't say, tho I wanted dinner so it was a surprise). It was (also) a surprise to me that came with fried rice which I generally don't care for but my SO said was good. I actually think they may have done this because I said Hot and Soup Soup which they assumed was a combo. My SO also said this was good. Walnut Shrimp (at home advertised as Honey Walnut Shrimp) is probably my favorite American Chinese food dish but not all places carry it. This place did not disappoint. They only had a few pieces of brocolli but no-one orders Walnut Shrimp for the health value if they know what it is :P The chow fun was good (for those uninformed it's like lo mein but with wider noodles - also not carried everywhere). The sesame chicken was average (but the last sesame chicken I had was terrible so it was a welcome up trending change :P). The spring rolls were not well cooked but on reheat they were perfect. As far as the place itself, it was pretty empty. I'm honestly not sure if they have dine in or not. There was a side room with tables but there was a big curtain which made it look inaccessible. There are 4 wooden padded chairs for waiting. The staff is friendly though I was struggling to understand the person who took my order and I'd say I'm decent with accents. But all ended up well. Ultimately, I would recommend this place if hungry for Chinese and in the area but it definitely was not #1. But perhaps in that area it is ;) read more

Ordered a Szechuan chicken lunch special to have at my office for a quick lunch. When I went to eat it there was not a single piece of chicken in it. I ate my rice and couple pieces of broccoli and realized there wasn't ANY chicken in it. I called over and explained what happened and the lady said that it did have chicken in it and she didn't believe me and said I may have eaten it and just said that. I order there often and was surprised at how rude and argumentative she was. She said I had to return the meal in order to replace it but I only have 30 min lunch. I will never order here again or anyone at the office after her accusing me of lying about the chicken read more

This used to be a favorite of ours. Biggest disappointment is the last two times we've ordered- no fortune cookies! Today I wrote on the order "don't forget the fortune cookies" but still didn't get any. So I called and was told no more fortune cookies unless you ask-which i had done. Come on--a 75 dollar order and you can't throw in a few lousy cookies???? read more

The wonton soups were good. My sons chicken lomein was also good. But my pork fried rice was not very good. The rice tasted dry and over cooked. Not sure if the rice was even fresh. Not impressed. read more

Auuuughhh... I liked this place until my second visit. First, it's in a weird location. It's in a strip mall, but you can't access it from the rest of the mall, only the main road. Like Michael L., I love that they have General Tso's Tofu! It is the only tofu item on the menu, though, which is a shame--kung pao would be really good. Still, it's more variety than some places in the area. Why two stars? Last order, my date and I ordered a tofu dish and a chicken dish, but somehow we ended up with two chicken dishes. As a vegetarian who lives 30 minutes away, this was about as disappointing as it can get. We were the only people in the restaurant--the cook actually took our order--so I can't see where the confusion could have come from. Check your order if you go here! :( read more

Have to agree with other reviews - not pretty, and it's dated inside, but dang, is the food good. I love their crab rangoons. Crispy and light, they're the best in Altoona. Our office orders here often, and there hasn't been one bad dish. We're big fans of the General Tso's, chicken on a stick, and the Lo Mein, among the many dishes. Also, if you ask for spicy, they make it SPICY. read more

Not the prettiest girl at the dance, but mmm will your tongue will be happy. Looks like your everyday crappy Chinese takeout. Pictures of food on the wall and numbered combos. I ordered the chicken and broccoli plus dumplings. Came quick and had a large portion. Dumplings were pretty good for a takeout place. I was expecting a lot worse but they were good. Chicken and broccoli doesn't have too many variations. Tasted fresh and was def a good choice. No 1? Maybe in Altoona, but this is the only place I've seen Chinese people in Altoona. In town on a business trip and stuck at the motel. I hop on Yelp and find this spot that also delivers! I ordered vegetable lo mein and general tso for delivery to my motel. The food arrived in less than 20 minutes, was hot and flavorful. Nothing special but not bad either. The driver was friendly and my order was correct, even with the extra pair of chopsticks. If you're in the mood for some affordable take out Chinese food, this place seems to hit that spot. read more

For what it is, it's my favorite Chinese place in town that has delivery - of course it's the Americanized typical Chinese take out menu , but for Altona can't ask for much more - their veggies r fresh and crispy and they give good portions They are super duper fast for delivery - I would order more if I could order online though, I hate calling - anyplace where I can order online I order more often - they used to use beyond menu online ordering but stopped and I'd say I order about 3 times a year now whereas before I ordered at least monthly read more

The kind of "Americanized" Chinese place that I like. A small family operation that makes the food to order. I liked that my food was not overly oily, a problem at many Chinese places. As noted by others, the place does not look "fancy", but it is clean and presentable. I saw no sanitation issues. The szechuan bean curd is tasty (get the bean curd fried). This place is a small free standing building right on the road, NOT in the strip mall behind. Don't get confused if your GPS tries to have you turn into the strip mall parking lot. read more

Not a pretty place, but genuine Chinese food as this family cooked it in China before coming here. Best Chinese food I have had on the East Coast, including in the DC area or VA Beach/Norfolk area. Good food. Good price. And a lot of competition in the immediate area to keep them on their toes. At least 2 other takeout places and 4 buffets and 2 normal sit-down restaurants. They pride themselves on having the best food and the best price. And try the Rangoon and the Honey Teriyaki Chicken. read more

This used to be the best Chinese food in town. Something is amiss. I've ordered delivery at least ten times after it seemed to go downhill, just hoping it was a fluke. Nope. Tonight was the last time I'll order food from here. I ordered three items, which not only took an hour and five minutes to arrive, but was almost cold. It was edible, except for what I ordered for myself, which was sweet and sour shrimp. Three of the five shrimp rings were as hard as hockey pucks. No joke. The other two, I managed to eat a half of each one before getting back to the rock hard portion. I called to complain, and things have to be really bad before I call anyone about anything. The hostess, or whomever answers the phones, wasn't very interested or apologetic about my call. I was friendly about it, and didn't ask for anything in return. I may stop in tomorrow to see if she reported the call to her boss, which I had asked her to do. read more

Ordered General Tso's chicken and Orange Chicken, the dish was mostly breading with hardly ANY chicken. Gross.

I WAS a customer for 4 years. However, one day I made a $60 order for my entire family. After the delivery was made we discovered that there was a mix-up. We were supposed to receive a shrimp fried rice but instead received a shrimp lo mein. No problem. I called and they said the shrimp fried rice would be delivered. When the delivery guy arrived he asked for the Shrimp lo mein. I showed him the receipt and the shrimp lo mein. He said that since we'd eaten some of it that we had to pay for the shrimp fried rice. I told him that was insane because they made the mistake. He called the restaurant and the manager told him that they needed the money. So I told the delivery guy, whom I tipped 10 bucks the first time, to take his shrimp fried rice and leave. I immediately call the restaurant and told the lady that she lost a loyal customer over 4 bucks. She acted like she couldnt understand English and asked, "You want me to come back." No definitely not. I DO NOT recommend this restaurant to anyone. There are many better run chinese restaurants in the city. read more

No. 1 Chinese, really turned out to be a steaming No. 2. This review would not have been made had their customer service not been awful. And we ordered from here the previous day without issue. But they managed to miss 2 things on a $100+ order. Gave us 2 steamed orders of dumplings instead of fried. Which they had everything written down correct for our order, so not sure how they screwed that up. Upon calling them to see what might of happened or if we were able to get the rest of our order, the worker started screaming into the phone and then DEMANDED that we give them back the steamed dumplings that they gave us. The worker that showed up to deliver the fried ones, which were under cooked, was very adamant about not giving us the fried ones until he had the steamed ones in hand. He FLATOUT said that they were going to resell the steamed ones. That is disgusting considering what some people could've done in this scenario. So for that, they lost our business because of it. I will not be eating here again considering I don't know how fresh the food may be that they probably brought back from someone else they gave the wrong order to. Truly disappointing. read more

Ordered shrimp and Chinese vegetables which was good but also ordered a quart of egg drop soup. This was all take out. I checked my order before leaving the parking lot and noticed one measly little and I mean little bag of fried noodles for a quart of soup. Are you really that cheap!!! I went back in a bought three more bags so we had enough for our soup. Got home and opened the bags of fried noodles only to find out that every bag contained stale noodles. REALLY!! How expensive are fried noodles that you have to serve them stale. Well that cost them a customer... I won't ever go back!! read more
