Aside from rather high prices, which is true of all of the Nob Hill/Raley's chain, I'd give this Nob Hill five stars. The store is always clean and the staff is always friendly -- although perhaps a little too friendly. It's a small town, everyone knows each other, so occasionally, checker chatter slows your exit. That's certainly not a deal breaker for me, but I have noticed people in line looking a little frustrated as talk turns to babies, family and etc... The produce and meat departments are outstanding and the rest of the store is always stocked and well organized. The store is on par with the Nob hill in Livermore and the Raley's in Turlock. And considering Nob Hill is effectively the only legit grocery store within a 10 or 15 mile radius, the City of Newman is lucky to have them. read more

In the last few months, Nob Hill has been going a little down hill. They still have the best cashiers, baggers, and other staff in the business. The problems I have noticed is that selection of products has fallen. They only have Kikkoman Soy Sauce. There are a lot of other brands, but not at Nob Hill. They were out of Smoked Ham Hocks for weeks. I buy produce there and you have to be very careful selecting produce. I bought onions on more than I ne occasion that looked and felt fine, but when cut open there were rotten areas inside the onion. I buy half and half at Nob Hill. Check the expiration carefully! A lot of nearly expired product. I told the gentleman stocking the milk fridge. He said there is nothing they could do about it! Not true! Tell Sunnyside to take their old milk back to the plant. My other new problem there is the displays in the aisles. My brother is in a wheel chair, and they have the aisles absolutely cluttered with free standing promotional display boxes. When you walk in the south entrance door, it is like walking in a corn maze. Too many display cases! Even their own handicap carts barely fit. Also, Nob Hill is the only Supermarket in the area. But, prices are premium prices, so it is better to save up and go to a different, cheaper store in Turlock or Modesto. read more

Living in Newman, you're kind of stuck if you just need a couple things and don't want to drive to Patterson or further. Twice in the last two weeks I have gone in and picked up sushi among other things. The young lady stuck the two packages of sushi on their side in the bag instead of flat like someone using their actual brain would do. The packages have the taped on price tag on one side and not the other so one of the packages came open in the car and made a mess in the bag all over the other stuff that was overly stuffed into the paper bag and the other that didn't the sushi shifted all to the bottom. Since I have lived in Newman, I have had one of there (no longer there) cashiers place a 2lb bag of sugar and a #10 can of (something I can't remember) on TOP of my bread. This was also the same short lady with glasses and long brown hair that would go out and smoke leaning against the propane tanks. So that one is going back a few years. I have had one of their baggers put in a small cake from the bakery on it's side in a bag. That one I caught when it happen and yes they did end up having to go grab a replacement. I blame the management. Obviously common sense isn't being used, perhaps some actual training is in order. When I go there I expect to leave in a bad mood, I'm at the point now that even for simple stuff I'll just go to Walmart or SaveMart. And if anyone wants to say that I've never walked in their shoes - yeah I have I was an assistant manager at a grocery store in Pleasanton California for several years. I am on a fixed income and they alway charge me a bag fee when I use my food stamps there the only big store in town but I would rather go to dollar general then to rob hill because they rob you blind most of the people there are very rude and won't take the time to help you find something do not go here it a waste of time read more

I was just there and bought over 350.00. A kid by the name of Jacob was asked to bag my things with paper. He took soooo long to bag a paper bag that I asked him to step aside because all he was doing was talking to an employee next to him and wasn't even doing anything. His last bag he filled he tossed on top of my potatoe chips. With a smart remark as have a nice evening,I told him to get out of my way that he wasn't a very nice person. Actually I called him a little asshole. After I loaded my car with the groceries, I took my basket over to the bays you put them in. This store is so over priced , looks clean and tidy but make sure you check the expiration dates on everything you buy , I have had several items that I purchased with expired dates on them and not realizing it until I went to use the item, soda , ice cream , syrup for pancakes just many things!! I used to get sandwiches from the deli but every time I would get turkey with mayo and cheese only I always got the taste of fish ,so disgusting . From. The only reason I come here is if I have no time to go to Los Banos. I try to go to a different checker every time just hoping I get a polite one once! Never happens today I got a girl who not only completely ignored me while she continued a conversation with the bagger, then when she handed me my recipt she literally yawned in my face. DELI DRAMA! I used the Nob Hill phone ahead service for a deli sandwich. Knowing how busy it can get in the evening. I was told it would be ready in 10 minutes. Well I showed up 20 minutes later and: First, I was ignored for 5 minutes while the deli employees talked about her grandmother. Then, when I did speak up was told that they would be right with me. Finally, found out that my sandwich was never made and would have to wait for it to be prepared. WOW! read more

Rude checker (Charity) could not bag my groceries, as requested. I wanted my frozen foods bag together in insulated bags. Checker put 4 items that did not require refrigeration in the bags. Making bags very heavy, 5 lbs of oranges. I ended up having to bag my own groceries. When customer service bagger came over to assist me, cashier told her to leave. I ask for the manager, when he showed up he assisted me with the groceries and said he would counsel cashier privately. He agreed that cashier was rude and made bags very heavy (I had another bag available). Disabled senior treated very badly. I should have left the groceries at the stand and shop at save mart in Patterson. Taking my money, $124.00, with me. I will only shop, buying only necessary items at Nob Hill from now on. Another cashier is very friendly and her service is outstanding. My money will not be used to employ a very RUDE and INCOMPETENT cashier. read more

I'll admit that my wife is the big time shopper and coupon queen. But we both really like this store. Ok, so it's a chain and it's not just the local grocery story but it's nice, it's always clean, the shelves are always stocked and straight. The deli is not bad and they have fresh sushi! And not just that dang CA roll. The produce is usally top notch. The meats are pretty good but the fresh seafood is all but nonexistent. Frozen sure but then again... Newman, so... Anyway every one there is incredibly nice. They know my kids by name, they know my wife by name and they know me by my wife's name :-) (Oh your's ____ husband right?) Yeah, that's me. Are the prices a little higher then other stores? Yep but it's a nice store that has pretty good choices in Newman which is right next to... well... nothing. I mainly work in nearby Patterson, but I am frequently called to the Newman area, and sometimes work here as well. I usually buy items from the deli area, so I don't know their groceries as well as a resident in the local region might. So! That deli... It's very good deli by any standards and an excellent deli by rural Central Valley standards. I particularly enjoy their sushi counter. A nice veggie futomaki is rarely in the standard fare set out for the day, but the gentleman who prepares the sushi has accomodated my request for it to very good effect! On the unusual day that I don't care for sushi, I have had very good sucess finding dairy free and meat free snacks, as well as Hippy-chow of other varieties. It's pretty reliable to find a good Barbara's TV dinner, or other more natural brand of prepared food. I recommend shopping the more responsible food things there and supporting better food in more of the Central Valley. Nob Hill also has very friendly staff! Nick, from deli, recently helped me with a special need around Thanksgiving. He had no trouble recalling a request that I made and accomodating it. As it turns out, my follow-up phone call to confirm was completely redundant. read more

I was passing through and stopped in for coffee and lunch. The store seemed well stocked, their produce department had a good selection including a many organic offerings. The staff was friendly and helpful. I was offered assistance by several employees as I walked through the store. Peet's coffee was excellent (I had an Americano) and the barista knew her stuff! I must commend Nob Hill. I have not gone in there a whole lot since my last review, however, the last few times that I have been there, I have had very pleasant exchanges with my checkers. They are giving eye contact and greetings, they are not carrying on personal conversations with fellow co workers and otherwise being rude. I have even heard a "good morning" as I browsed the meat aisle. It's clear to me that an effort has been made to improve customer service and it really makes a difference as this is in stark contrast with what I consistently experienced when I first began frequenting this store. I would give 5 stars if the prices were not so high.... But I guess for a small town I should be Happy we have a NICE grocery store that carries a bunch of options. The employees are always so nice. They know my family by name. The managers always keep my 2 favorite items well stocked. It is customer service at its BEST!!! The store is open until 11pm. I do wish they stayed open a bit longer on the weekends. When it comes to cleanliness, the store is ALWAYS very clean. The shelves are always well stocked too. For it being a rural town store they do offer a big selection of Organic & natural foods. The meats are always fresh. The selection of seafood is mostly frozen, But even then it tastes pretty good. NICE ALCOHOL, WINE, BEER & SPIRITS SECTION. The parking lot is well lit. Lots of spaces. The stores that surround Nob Hill make a nice shopping experience. I know when I come shop that if nob Hill does not carry what I need, that Rite Aid will have it. It would be nice to see a few more smaller shops come up around the grocery store. read more

This nob hill is simply terrible. The selection is what you would expect. You pay the typically high Raley's price but without any of the service Raley's offers. The truly horrible experience starts once you get to the check out line. Most times the checker and bagger are talking crap about people that are in break, their babies daddy, etc. They've never said hi, or did you find everything, or do you need ice. They seriously just ignore the customer. They never offer to help a mother with kids or an elderly lady out to their car. It would be a giant step if they just acknowledged that the customer existed. With the corona virus going around killing people, and people advised to wear a face covering of some sort while out shopping, many of the employees of this store were not wearing any type of face covering. I would hope that they would have more concern for their customers as well as for their own health. We are not immune, this virus is in our community now. Tired of Nob Hill's high prices. It's worth driving to Patterson Walmart if you are buying more than a few things.

Be very careful when you shop at Nob Hill. The store may look clean at first glance but the Deli and meat departments are not so clean as you may think. My husband and I kept getting sick and it seemed like maybe it was the food from there. I talked to a meat inspector and they recommended changing stores. I now shop at a different store and have not been sick once. (I would love to have a nice Nob Hill in town.) read more
