I shop at the Watsonville store often but usually after noon when other checking staff come in. There is a mornings only checker that is horrendous and a total jerk. Rude as they get. Unfortunately he was the only checker available today. I was tempted to leave my full basket and walk out. Too busy gossiping and talking smack about another customer to pay attention to the customer in front of him trying to pay and leave. Why don't Nob Hill retire this fool? We bought an onion here, which turned out to be rotten and moldy when we cut it open ($2.50 for this yellow onion, by the way). Produce is already marked up ~200% here due to "market adjustments," so I would have thought that they could afford to keep it a bit fresher. The price tags are insane---the large price listed below "Sale" is *not* the actual price; rather it is the price net of all potential discounts that you may or may not actually receive (see pic). The true price is actually the tiny gray lettering located in the upper right hand corner of the label, which is sometimes obscured by the metal rim on the shelving. I've been shopping here for 30+ years and several things about it. Make it five star to me. Many of the employees have been there 20-30 years or even more so there's something that keeps in there and I hope it's the combination of good union, benefits, and pay. Employees are always friendly and attentive and have answered questions when I had them. Buy a large I find the produce to be excellent, and I'm glad that there's at least some local produce available. While prices for some things are understandably higher than at a discount store, that's overridden by the quality and variety of many items not found elsewhere in Watsonville. I have started using the app and while I don't find it user-friendly at all, after a few months, I've gotten the hang of it, and there are some substantial savings with it. I hesitated in the beginning because I really don't like all my shopping habits, tracked, but acknowledge that tracking is how they can personalize specific discount offers to you. So, I would like less types of discounting, but I'll take it for now. I just click on the account and select to clip all savings instead of Willie Nelly going through item by item. One click of the account barcode and you'll get your savings at checkout. I don't recall, but I think they might even have a Wallet feature so you could enter your preferred credit card and shop with nothing but your smart phone. I love shopping at Nob Hill on Main Street in Watsonville. They have a great selection of items I need and the service is OUTSTANDING. There were 2 checkers today with people ahead of me with HUGE basket of groceries. A store employee was walking by, saw me and escorted me to the "self checkout" where no one was waiting. He actually punched in the codes and got me checked in minutes!! he also bagged it. I am impressed to say the least. A true gentleman and someone who cares about the customers! I did not get his name....tall man in his 50's? My point is.....they care about their customers and I know this customer (me) will do all my shopping there. Coat too high. Since adding self check, the other lines are slow, almost like it's on purpose to get people to use the self check. We go to costco due to the price. And the rules change, so you have to pay attention; especially if they are arguing with you about them: So you can order a listed specialty sandwich off the menu, but the new rule is, you can't have it any other way. Super expensive. When asked for a Nob Hill discount card for advertised discounts the checker said I had to step aside, cancel my purchase, go online to apply and start over. EVERY time I've ever asked anywhere in CA or elsewhere they say "oh sure no problem " and swipe their own card from their keychain. Even if I have no card that's how you get return customers = service. Would have saved about $25. She could see I was surprised and disappointed. At the end no "thank you." So when I clicked on write a review it reminded me to consider Covid. So I will by giving 3 stars rather than the 2 that I had planned. I had an encounter with two associates during my visit today and they were extremely nice and helpful and the fact that the store had everything I needed and some can also reflect this rating. However, my check out person had a meltdown on me and in the end said repeatedly that he didn't care about me or giving me good customer service. Then he threw the receipt at my pile of groceries on the counter while I was trying to get them in the cart. To me this should never happen. I didn't call him names and I didn't yell at him. I did however point out the customer service could be improved by getting me a second cart or using more sanitizer. I could go in to every little detail but I don't think it is necessary. I doubt I will ever return to this store. He said things that were not true and unnecessary. My belief is everyone should give the other the benefit of the doubt. Even this guy. So I didn't call his supervisor over and demand an apology. Did he ever think that maybe his customers are just as stressed because they think they might get this virus and bring it home too? He said I didn't care but he is so wrong. I just wanted to be treated nicely since I am a paying customer. He was anxious from the moment I said I had a couple of bags for my cold and frozen items. I really think stores could come up with some additional customer service help to keep the stress down. This isn't going away anytime soon. The fact that he freaked out about me having bags and where I was touching the edge of the counter was ridiculous and I'm sure the store could come up with a better system. He made no suggestions just telling me what I couldn't do. My suggestion if you want to use this store is don't bring bags and transfer at the car. It's like night and day. 5 stars for the good quality of the few items I sometimes buy from there, minus 3 stars for weird and unattentive service, especially at their Deli. I've read so many positive reviews here and on Google and they don't match our experience at all. We are reviewing Nob Hill in Watsonville, right? Safeway is much friendlier. The deli sandwiches are the best in town, provided the right person makes the sandwich properly.... yes I'm a sandwich critic for sure.....retired sandwich maker, and I appreciate my sandwich meat being folded and placed in an even manner. I also appreciate an even layer of all other ingredients. Sometimes I will get someone who just puts everything in the middle of the sandwich, but most of the time my sandwich is perfect. I love the pastrami, but also get roast beef and turkey for my family. We eat all the different breads and veggies. We have tried the gourmet sandwiches off the menu, and those are very good also. Like the lyrics from the song from the TV show Cheers says "Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name, and they're always glad you came," this is what my local Nob Hill is to me. From the checkers to the baggers, the sushi chefs, bakery & deli ladies and the best butchers in Santa Cruz County, I have always gotten the best service from everyone in this store. The produce is the freshest I've seen in town with lots of organic options, and they always have great looking wheat grass for one of my very spoiled kitty cats (who sends me shopping for her twice a week ;) The meat dept is wonderful too. I love to pick out 2-3 turkey breasts and actually ask the butchers to de-bone them for me and have them ready in about 10 minutes. They'll also sharpen your kitchen knives for you, for FREE!!! My favorite checkers, Raul and Ernie are friendly, funny, and just about the best you can get. When my husband shops, Raul takes a look at everything in his basket and tries to figure out what he's going to cook. Raul's a big BBQ guy and loves to swap recipes too. When the store decided to remodel a few years back, I got a little cranky a few times when I couldn't find everything I wanted. Ernie was always cheerful and helpful and gave me a lot of tips about learning the new "system." I still have trouble finding some things at times but I'm getting better at it (less cranky too ;) For many people, grocery shopping is a chore. For me, grocery shopping at Nob Hill is like visiting friends, and I always leave the store happy and in a good mood. Thanks guys!!! read more

My sister had ordered my nephew's 1st birthday cake from here. She had asked her friend if she could pick up the cake and bring it over to the party site as my sister was trying to do 5 zillion things to set up the party. My sister gets a call from her friend saying they don't have her cake. Wha?? Turns out someone read the calendar wrong and thought it was for the following day. Grrrr!! Granted this cake was an order for a whole sheet. They said that they could go to the Capitola store and pick up the cake there which was retarded. Plus that store was slammed. So her friend ended up waiting there for them to ice a new cake which sucks. Either way, they managed to ice and design (airbrushed photo and all) the cake like they had taken their sweet time to do it. They bakery owner even gave her friend a bouquet of flowers as an apology and refunded the money for the cake as they were the ones who messed up on the order. We got a free cake!! Yay! Her friend arrived and the cake looked awesome. They're super stars that bakery department. And of course, my nephew's picture looked cool on it. The best part? It had a buttery, sugary based frosting that tasted fantastic. 5 stars for the rock stars at the bakery department for making my nephew's party a hit in the sugar department!! read more

Nob Hill is part of the same chain that also goes under Raley's brand. I live in Tahoe, so that's the brand I'm most familiar with, but Nob Hill is virtually identical in store layout, branding, signage, etc. Not sure why they bother marketing literally the same store under several different names. Staff here are particularly friendly. My friends have shopped here for nearly a decade, and it was nice to see everyone from the veggie guys and the cash register say hi to them by name. Interesting to see that they carried different flavors than what my store carries. The manager was super friendly, didn't ask me for a receipt, and the employees there are very nice, time and time again I've been there, and they are always with a smile on their faces. My 9 year old son was grabbing a cart when the employee Francisco stood in front of him not saying anything at all. Of course my son froze because he was confused. I wanted to share something that just happened to me. My Mom was an avid Oakland A's fan. She would often say, I'm not a baseball fan, I'm an A's fan. Anyway, she had many 'A's' items, and one was a Oakland A's bag she made (she was a quilter). I lost her 2 years ago and I carry that bag with me all the time when I go to the store. Great location, convenient and plenty of parking. Friendly atmosphere. Clean. No crazy long lines like Safeway or Costco. Increasing number of organic and gluten free options in the isles. Limited on high quality, fresh and humane meats but they do carry fresh pasture raised eggs and grass fed cow yogurt. There is a decent selection of organic produce but check the dates and inspect it before you buy because it isn't always super fresh, for example sometimes the organic avocados may have gone bad or the organic potatoes may be already green or rotten when you take them out of the bag. (Being that there is so much high quality local organic farming, I'd expect better in that department) But overall, a pleasant store that serves most of our weekly shopping needs. This is all about Raul, the checker. Before the pandemic, he used to talk to me. Now, he gives me the silent treatment. Today, I was in line. Another SF Giants fan was in front and he had a nice conversation with Raul. When I came up, I started the same conversation with the same topic- SF Giants but I got the silent treatment. You can see the hatred in his eyes. He cannot make eye contact with me. He kept his head down. Is it because I am Asian-American? Can someone tell Raul that I am not Chinese. And I am not the cause of the Covid-19. I used to be a pharmacist where I dealt with physicians, nurses and patients. There were times where I did not like a person but here is the difference between Raul and me: I treated everybody equally. I was professional about it. I had to be or I would have been fired. This is about the E-CART service only. Their ECART is a disaster (ZERO STARS) - it cost me HOURS today. The crux of the issue was that about $20 of wrong product at 300% higher cost than the ordered (on sale, reason I was shopping there today) product. I ended up making a 30-minute round-trip return to the store. I ended up having to source the correct product myself (although they knew when I was coming back to the store) - so I might as well have just done the shopping myself. There were additional items that were ordered that weren't bagged, but that had more to do with problems on their online ordering system. Because the goods are already bagged, what are you going to do - unbag them at the store to verify that everything is correct? (If you use ECART, this is precisely what you *should* do) If I can't trust them to pull the right product, I can't use this service - plain and simple. I can't tell you whether it's the staff being careless, or whether the system gives them a bad pick list. Worse, the service around the issue was really poor. It really felt like I was wasting my breath. Both on the phone and in the store, it was "hey, we'll give you your money back for the wrong product, but we're not really all that interested". When I called the 800 customer service number, "Trevor" neither asked for my name nor the order number, so they can't even have a record of that call. This was supposed to save me time - instead it consumed my late afternoon, and it left me with an impression that Nob Hill really doesn't have this product, or a service mentality dialed in. As much as I hate Safeway - it's 5 minutes closer to me, and right now I'm so irritated, I'd rather give them my business. Nob Hill is my go-to store in Watsonville. I stand by any great review of the store and it's employees. I walked into the store today and found a Salvation Army employee inside the store collecting customer dollars, and had a pretty strong reaction, not unlike that of being surprised by the pairing of this store with the Salvation Army. Not too long ago, a top officer was quoted as saying gays deserved death. I have beloved family members who are gay and are incredibly spiritual and sensitive. The Salvation Army has done an incredible amount of damage control because of that interview, and has made great strides making amends for the remarks. Still, their bylaws stick to their Methodist beginnings, and still demand their employees only observe the modern view in "states which have made gay marriage legal" according to their website. President Obama helped make gay marriage legal in ALL states, which is not yet apparent on their website. This organization is not the only one to help others, and I would like to at least have the bell-ringers stand outside with anyone else collecting donations. read more

I am a good customer who shops early in the morning. A clerk was rude this morning. Not something you need to start your day. I thought something was on sale. Apparently it was for a certain flavor of the item. Instead of saying so. the Clerk responded. "It was for Blueberry only- The sign was right in front of it". With an attitude that he was delighted he found me wrong. In front of about 3 customers. No, I am sorry it is not on sale it should be soon. Nothing but attitude. It was not so much that the items were not on sale. It was his "Holier than thou attitude that has me thinking my Nob Hill Foods store shopping is over.
