We had some trouble getting the 30% discount applied to my order related to the world market credit card I opened. Chris went above and beyond in helping me and I greatly appreciated this. World market is my go to for home decor. Not only are the items, beautiful, but everything is so much cheaper than other furniture stores. I went online to buy it, but it was going to cost more with shipping (and take more time). I called WM customer service to try and work out a deal. Love the wide range of products at reasonable prices in my view. Been buying gifts from them for a very long time. And gifts for myself.

While this is a World Market I don't mind as a whole, three separate times now I have attempted to purchase items that were marked on sale (I always make sure that more than one item is tagged with the red price sticker) and the store scanned it at full price and then they then said they will check the website and they told me it was full price there so they refused to honor the sale price that is on the item and acted like it was my fault they marked it incorrectly. It isn't a huge deal and I just don't buy the item but I think that they should be aware that in the state of California it required by law that stores honor marked price. Because this has happened on more than one occasion it kind of makes the whole shopping experience negative because I either have to suck it up and pay more than it was marked by their employee or return the item. So when I got home I checked the website and the item was indeed on sale so I am not sure what was going on. This location needs to do better. read more

Such a great store! This is our go to place for hostess gifts and birthday gifts. They have this huge selection and sell everything from wines to outdoor furniture. I am always able to find what I am looking for at this location. (The food section from around the world is my favorite) I was shopping for goodie bags for a birthday party. It was one stop shopping! I was able to fill a total of fourteen party favor bags at this store. The event was for an adult birthday party. I found wine, candies, treats and even fun nonsensical items to fill the gift bags. They were an absolute hit at the party! The associates were friendly and welcoming. They have hired a pleasant staff that is always willing to help from the minute you walk in the door with a warm welcome to the cash wrap station where they check you out and make sure you are satisfied with your purchase. If you're looking for affordable bottles under $20, this is a good spot. They have Bogle, 19 Crimes, Josh, Chateau Ste. Michelle and even House of the Dragon bottles. Not just bad service - UNSAFE for COVID19 precautions! Drive from San Jose to Santa Cruz for a pickup order. Was told to pull up to the curb where homeless people smoked pot/meth and we restricted traffic flow. Sat there for 15 minutes no update. Parked car went inside, no sense of urgency and no desire to tell us they were looking, had to talk to a cashier. Final response- item was defective (even though they said it was ready for pickup)and that no they were not getting it in so did I want what was left from order? No apology! Mistakes happen, but a series of mistakes is not appreciated and followed by having to drive 45 minutes and burn gas just to be surrounded by unsafe people, having to enter the store and find answers myself is not acceptable. Had an issue with a return amount not going through even though I had come into the store and returned it and the cashier gave me a receipt for the return. So I called the next day to ask a manager what to do in this case.. he was very helpful and expressed concern, even took down my name and contact # to call me back with an update.. $ was eventually returned back onto my card. I have to credit his professionalism and thoughtful language that made me feel like he cared. FYI; I have also been there shopping on one occasion when I witnessed a woman asking for help from the manager to re some item and watched her run out the door with that item and not pay for it. The cashier seemed oblivious to it when the manager noticed that she left with that very item she inquired about. Manager asked the cashier if she had paid for a purchase and cashier said no.. So, I've read on these reviews where people are treated like criminals when they go there.. I actually saw the opposite side of this. That woman was blatant about her theft and it was a somewhat pricey item and not food or anything that she could maybe claim any desperate need for this theft.. Cost Plus has always been an interesting store to browse, although it's rare that I actually end up purchasing anything there because of prices and practicality. Nevertheless, we found some fantastic Portuguese dishes here on a severe discount that we use for our "nice" dishes, so you never know what you might find! They've always done a good job of sourcing products with a very global feel. just walking in, you feel like you could easily be strolling some foreign marketplace or an international grocery. They have everything from furniture to foods to blankets to mirrors to small gifts and collectibles. making it a place with something for everyone. They are usually quite busy during the holidays. I like that they've pivoted to curbside pickup and been a responsible chain in terms of the current COVID-19 regulations. Today was the second time this store profiled me wrongly of shop lifting. I live a block away and spend a lot of money on food, alcohol and decoration. Today they claimed my jacket I came in with was their inventory. They said I couldn't leave until I gave them my coat which is distinctively different than what they even sell. After two false accusations I am terrified to ever go back. If they want to prevent theft I suggest they use security tags (they don't or hire private security (they don't) When managers and cashiers act as vigilantes against theft they open us (the public) as victim. I'm not hust upset because I feel singled out but this is a societal issue on the rise. I won't be spending my money anywhere that the employees break the law and justify it this way. read more

On February 28th 2020, around 6:30 p.m. me and my girlfriend decided to visit the World Market with the intent of purchasing furniture, and other knick-knacks, for our new apartment. We found a nice wooden desk and a chair to go along with it. However, some backstory, I have some digestive issues, and when I need to use the restroom I need to use the restroom. With this being said I take, on average, a bit longer than the usual person. I find an older employee, a lady with dried-reddish hair and I ask her if she can open the bathroom for me. The bathroom locks are code accessible only, because of the large homeless population around the area, understandable. On that note, I do not look even near homeless. Anyway she mutters, "I'll open it for you," she had a not very inclined to do so attitude. She opened it, I said thanks. I hear a knock at the door about 7 minutes in and I say occupied, of course. And then I hear the restroom next to me be opened. Ok. Like I said, I have digestion issues that prevent me from having a shorter restroom use, out of my control obviously. But they have two restrooms for a reason, which I'm not using as an excuse to be stingy. I try to be courteous and take as quickly as I can. However what happened next was uncalled for, unprofessional, and down right disrespectful. About 12 minutes in the same redhead-frizzled-horse-hayed-haired lady comes knocking at the door again. Halfway through saying occup-... she aggressively continues to know cutting me off by saying, "It's time to get out. You've been in there way too long. You need to come out now!" All while continuing to knock aggressively. I was too shocked to say anything back. She was practically yelling as if she was my mother and I was her 10 year old child. I finish up literally about a 15 seconds later ready to confront her but she was gone. All while I notice customers within earshot of the door sitting and looking at the furniture by the bathrooms. How embarrassing. I find my girlfriend and tell her what just happened and we decide to not purchase the furniture we were looking at, nor the bag full of items we had picked out before this ordeal. Who do your employees think they are, yelling at their customers to come out of the bathroom immediately with that tone of voice? Definitely some power trip. Will never be shopping back at World Market again. I'm sure that old ginger hag doesn't even have a 401(k) since she's working at World Market and timing people's bathroom usage. Weirdo. read more

Curbside pickup is a mess at this store. I placed an order online, after business hours, on the night before it was to be picked up (so, technically same-day pickup). The next day, at noon, I noticed I had not received a text saying the order was ready. So, I checked the status online. No record of my order found! I phoned the store, and pressed the selection for curbside pickup. I got a rude young man, who interrupted me before I'd finished speaking. He barked, in reply to my description of the problem, "When that happens it usually means the order didn't go through correctly." I told him I had a confirmation number and had been charged for the order. Only then did he offer to "go in back" to check on this. He looked up my order and said it was "in the system," but they were backlogged on orders waiting to be picked. Now, if you are the guy who answers the phone about curbside pickup orders, wouldn't you already know that the store was backlogged with orders? Of course you would. I think what happened is no one noticed there was an order sitting there, until I phoned. Lesson learned here: check to confirm local inventory online, but phone the store directly to put something on hold or purchase directly over the opine. Or, even better, just go into the store in person to make your purchase. read more

They are currently hiring Christmas help and not taking the time to train them well. The checker was reckless and kept making mistakes and unsuccessfully trying to fix them, while swearing repeatedly and complaining about what a long day it had been for her. After I had checked my receipt, I discover I was over charged for three items I didn't buy. This could have been avoided had she slowed down, paid attention to what she was doing and cared about the quality of her own work! This frustratingly creates work for the customer who has to drive back to the store to have them fix their mistake! When I checked out the women checker scan the oil is $7.99, I told her that's not correct, she still argues with me and call another women to check the price, a second women comes back the check out area told us the price is $7.99, I said to her follow me than I can show her the price, me and 2 women went back the area for Olive oil and I show her the sign price, but she still not amid the price is wrong, I told her I did not make the sign, the worker of Cost Plus made it. On the way back to checker finish my purchase, I said " tell me who is a lier " , than a third women jump in and tell me she a store manager her name is Cathy or Kathy. I told her and her workers don't gave customer attitude because their ge caught and not accept their mistake. My mom and I had heard so much about World Market when it was originally Cost Plus World Market and beginning with a visit to one in Fresno during my father's business trips we shopped at one and we were so enchanted with what World Market had to offer that based on that visit to the Fresno location we decided to check out the Santa Cruz location of World Market and we felt the same enchantment going in. I mean if you love marvelous items from around the world and a wonderful section of unique groceries from all over the world this is such an amazing place. When my mom and I went shopping at World Market for the first time in Fresno we spent two whole hours looking through all the wonderful items and we even stocked on some unique food and we did the same at this location in Santa Cruz too. Normally I don't go for the I-Pretend-To-Travel look when it comes to home decor, so I can't be found here very often. But I've recently gotten into cheap wine and decided to peruse their selection. Found a few good (read: cheap) bottles and some other treats as well, ie British food. WHEN DID COST PLUS START SELLING BRITISH FOOD !? It's so cheap here ! They had Heinz Baked Beanz, a ton of McVitie's buscuits (including Penguin, my favourite), REAL Dairy Milk bars the size of my head, some Turkish Delight, and a fabulous assortment of other goodies. Cost Plus is normally not my cup of vodka. It's for quasi-hippies with money, but not quite yuppies. It's mostly overpriced third world shit. They like to show you pictures of brown people making colorful textiles and what not like, "See! They love making your home decor for $0.40 and hour. Peruse our colorful wares and buy with glee!" But the cat has cancer and I've become obsessed with removing chemicals and toxins from the house and our bodies. That's where Cost Plus comes in. I've been rocking the Nalgene since they were cool but apparently they leak deadly chemicals into the very water they are meant to contain. Whose grand idea was this?! Last time I was there, I noticed they had VOSS water, which comes in a glass container. And glass, my friends, is stable, IE it doesn't fuck your shit up. Granted, I could purchase a stainless steel beverage container but I didn't know where I could get one and I assumed they are out of my price range after being financially devastated by vet bills. Cost Plus was a pleasant surprise tonight. The boyfriend spent no less than 45 minutes salivating over 50% off candy and I found glass storage containers that were also 50% off. Nice find. Everything was on sale so I'm not sure why my total was $45; that rum filled chocolate was probably more that I realized, and we bought wine, and other things somehow found their way into the abnormally small hand basket.. Oh yeah the hand baskets, c'mon Cost Plus do you want me to purchase multiple hand held items? Cuz, if so you need to make it so I don't need a team of people to hold several baskets of my shit. But here's the type of thing that annoys be about the Santa Cruz Cost Plus: the staff who they think they are too good to work retail because they are "really" a grad student studying something obscure up on campus. Now, I spent some time behind a counter in college and I'm sympathetic to working retail hell, but why the attitude? You're earning an honest living, just like the rest of us. I had this type of experience at Cost Plus this past Sunday evening when I went in and bought a canvas print and a bag of chips (new Kettle Chips flavor Buffalo Blue = 4 stars). I could tell I was in trouble when I found the cashier slouched over the counter talking to someone about a local Chinese restaurant. He looked at me, saw I was on the phone and went back to his conversation until I hung up the phone. Do we really need to play this little game with each other, ethnomusicology grad student? I just want to buy my poster and chips and go home. But no, he wanted to dance: Me: "I'd like to use this 40% off coupon." Cashier: "On the ($1.99) chips?" Me: "No, on the ($39.99) poster." Cashier: "Oh, ok." (rings up total, I pay with a credit card. he prints out the receipt for me to sign and slides it across it to me. there is no pen.) "Would you like a bag?" "No thanks." (pause, cashier stares at me. some people get in line behind me.) "Um, did you want a bag?" "No, thanks." I smile. (another awkward pause. Cashier looks down at the unsigned receipt). "Uh, I need you to sign that." "No pen." "Oh! Huh... there's usually a pen up here." Looks around, does not find a pen, repeats, "I don't see a pen." "Uh huh." "Someone must have walked away with it." "Looks that way." Things continued in this vein for a while before he found a pen and I was able to sign the receipt and leave. Dear Madam or Sir I am experiencing some of the worst customer service through your Santa Cruz and Temecula stores that I have ever had. On the 28th of September I drove three and a half hours to Santa Cruz to pick up a Rainer futon I had placed on hold with the store manager, John. Once I arrived on Sunday afternoon the store staff informed me it had been sold. Not only had John assured me the futon would be available, but upon arrival Jeremy and Allison- the on duty managers, were rude and unfriendly and had absolutely no consideration for my drive time. After calling the store the following Tuesday, John assured me he would have the futon shipped to my store in San Luis Obispo from the Temecula store where one was located. The last time I received an update from John was the 12th of October so I called the Temecula store myself. I spoke with the most helpful person so far, he name was Summer. She had her store manager Kristen follow up with me. Kristen left me a message on Wednesday the 15th of October saying FedEx would ship my futon the following day. After no follow up call- I called Kristen back this morning to find that the shipping was not approved. John confirmed this when I finally reached him this morning as well. At this point it is the 20th of October, nearly a month after I drove to Santa Cruz and Wold Market is still failing to follow through. Please make this right. read more

Example: Today I stopped in and was browsing the single beers, because I'm the kind of person who just can't commit to a 6-pack without sampling first--and I was bummed because none of the pumpkin beers were available as singles. Enter, Mr. Cost Plus Alcohol Guy (sorry, don't know his name, but I definitely recognize him--he's always back in that section) who asks if he can help me with anything. They have the chai I like-- that is creamy like a fluffy cloud of dessert goodness...but it is sugar free! Tons of international foods, which is swell but I love the baskets they have. They are cheaper than Crate and Barrel so I go here to get sorting baskets and stuff. This place has never let me down in my basket searches, chocolate cravings, or need for tea. Their tea cup and tea pot sets are what I want!! Again, cheaper than Crate and Barrel and just want I want My tiny apartment does not allow me to have things like cute sets but just you wait!!! The other stuff like lotions, candles and designer table sets are cool but too expensive for my taste... So here's the deal. I was standing behind a woman checking out with zero people in line. Then after 3 people got in line the cashier made me go to the back of the line because I wasn't standing 2 feet to my right. When it was finally my turn, the cashier held up his pointer finger at me and helped someone not in line at all. Besides wanting to punch this kid in the face for being such a jacka**, I would have walked out but I needed a rug for my bathroom because I just moved into a place and water is getting everywhere when I get out of the shower. I worked retail for 15 years before going back to school for my career and service like this is not okay. I love coming here for Christmas gifts, because I can always find something for a person. I've found beautiful jewelry, yummy candy, cool kitchen items and furniture all at Cost Plus. The prices here aren't too bad, especially for the furniture which they seem to also have on sale. I kind of love and hate Cost Plus. I remember going as a child and always being reeeaaallllyyy bored. On the other hand, they have a lot of delicious treats, which always makes them a win. The Santa Cruz store is pretty good sized, especially for something in Santa Cruz. It's got a good selection of furniture and world snacks. They carry Happy Hippo now, which is awesome (but I only saw the chocolate ones when I last checked) and they carry the regular-flavoured Tim Tams (the Arnott's ones like they're supposed to be, so they taste just like in Australia). At any rate: friendly staff, never too busy, lots of cool things to lose your money too. Ample parking. Good times. read more

I have the same problem I have with most chain stores. The service is only as good as its employees and let's face it, when you work for a big store making around minimum wage, do you really care about the customers? I tried to buy the floor model of a table that they had on sale but they didn't want to do it because it would be "too hard" when there are customers in the store. If I were the owner of that store, I'm sure I would have found a way to sell the table. Being an employee, you really don't care about the sale as much as much as the inconvenience of having to deal with a customer. If the owner(s) do look at this, they should know that they lost an impulse sale. I only wanted the table because it was Thanksgiving and I thought if I was going to buy the table, it should be now. Maybe in a couple of years when it is my turn to host Thanksgiving again, I will plan more smartly and buy my table ahead of time or I will just do like I did now and use a folding table instead. read more

The customer service at this store is what keeps me going back. Such a fun shopping experience because the employees are clearly happy to be working there. As soon as you walk in they have some kind of coffee/snack samples for you, which I love. And this is where I get all my wine glasses/plates/cups from so whenever something breaks, I can get the exact same style to replace it every time. This is one of the few stores where I actually signed up for a card b/c the deals on wine and food are so good. They have so many random kinds of international goodies and a greay selection of well priced wine. I get all of my seasonal decorations from here too and I like how they display everything. The furniture isn't my taste, but I like everything else here. Again, it's really the customer service that keeps me coming back. For example, there is a girl named Jessica that works there that remembers my name everytime I am there. I haven't experienced that anywhere else besides this store. I'm sure you have been to a cost plus. I generally am not compelled to write about big places like this but it has some things about this location to note. Pros: Super friendly staff Santa cruzians don't seem to shop therefore you don't have to arrive early for sales and the clearance areas are always full of treasures. Cool decor but I only shop sales. They have pickle flavored popcorn (pregnancy heaven), Japanese soda, awesome scone mix, and heavenly chocolates. I enjoy cost plus when I have time to burn and a coupon to eliminate the guilt. Cons: They never have their new stuff out as quickly as Bay Area or sacramento area They don't make their aisles as wide as other stores. My double stroller fits in other locations well but not here.
