Noir leather has been an establishment in Royal Oak for as long as I can remember! When my friend was looking for a Nose ring I thought if any place in Royal Oak was going to have it, Noir Leather would and they didn't disappoint! Of course, we had to look for 5 minutes or so before we could find them, and the staff seemed to be hidden away in a back room giving us run of the store and not really bothering to want to help us. The store itself seems a bit cramped, and walking anywhere means walking into something. But overall the staff was helpful and friendly as soon as they did appear. The selection was something you have to see to believe, at least for someone such as myself. I don't know how many times I've been in to Noir throughout my life, but I was quite impressed. My first memory of Royal Oak was coming down with my parents for a Noir Leather summer fashion show, back when it was on Main. Yes, my parents were very liberal and yes, I feel very old. I spent high school shopping there for my spiked leather collars, platform army boots and blue hair dye. It was the only place to find your punk accessories before they became mainstream. The staff is always great and they are willing to special order items. The have the unique talent to make the most unusual purchases seem mundane and professional. Noir Leather has a lot of really awesome, super cute clothes in a style I absolutely love, so what's up with the two star rating? Let me tell you - I would have totally spent cash here and given them a higher rating except that they carry nothing in women's sizes larger than about a medium. I thought Noir Leather was the cutting edge store to shop at for goth, punk and club wear and it was... 20 years ago. Now the same old stuff is stale, dusty, overpriced (when you can find a price tag or sales clerk to help). Vinyl, PVC, fetish gear for beginners and a sex room in back that's embarrassing. The amount they charge for being so behind in fashion is ridiculous. The selection is small, sizes run small, they are elitists about being cool and edgy but don't seem to realize that scene is old and they are outdated. You can buy better stuff on line at better prices that probably hasn't been sitting on a shelf for years. The staff is allowed to wear anything in the store, whether for a shift or a fashion/fetish show but remember vinyl makes you sweat so wash anything you buy from here because they don't. read more

I love this place!! Not many of its kind here in Michigan and recently moving back to Michigan from Chicago I miss the specialty stores. These are the stores in which I thrive. I can find anything from a nice leather jacket for the Winter to a costume for year round events. I honestly wish I could give this place more stars, but some of the employees make it awkward for me to be in there, in the sense that maybe it looks like I shouldn't be shopping in a store that sells adult pieces.... Unprofessional employees. We arrived at 6 pm on a Sunday. They close at 7pm. I guess the lady there had a stick up her ass, and felt like leaving early. We knocked, and she came to the door. Employee: "We are closed" US:"It is six" Employee: "We close at six" US: *point to the sign on the door* "You close at 7" Employee: "Look, unless you really need a ball stretcher or something, I can't help you" US: "Oookaaaay..." *we leave* No point. What can I say, Noir Leather & Keith have been a fixture in Royal Oak since the 80's, and have been shopping there when in R.O. Since then, leave the kiddies home though, Everyone that works / plays here is knowledgeable in all aspects of Punk, Leather, Lace & BDSM..... With all the great events coming up in Detroit, Noir IS the go to place for that hot outfit & "accessories" !! I always see the staff out and about at events and they're very cool & great people !!!! In no way am I a stranger to shops like Noir, being a native to the West Coast and a transplant to Chicago. I walked among progressive independent shops like the groundbreaking Womyn's Wear in Vancouver down to some of the skeezier San Francisco "treats" and Chicago's iconic Alley Stores. Tabu Tabu there was no more titillating than wearing a mini-skirt and heels. So maybe I'm jaded. What brought me to Noir, of all things, were Leg Avenue stockings and tights. There's a fabulous shop on Queens Street West in Toronto that sells practically every iteration of thigh-high, stocking, nylon, and sock Leg Avenue (and other similar fun brands) sells. I have a heck of a time locating them locally and Noir Leather carries quite a few in their display cases. So in I went, unfazed by the thrill that a bachelorette party was *clearly* getting from being so bold. Really, ladies? I bet you get all hot and bothered by Desperate Housewives and Cosmo, too. Crowds here seem to be the curious lookey-loos and a bit more serious folk, though the really savvy ones are probably already well-stocked from online stores or trips to Chicago, Toronto, and/or New York. I showed up about an hour before closing time, and the staff were friendly and attentive. They may have had an attitude issue, but I had little trouble conversing lightly with a young woman while thumbing through the racks of clothes, perusing the boots, and glancing at the toy section. What immediately struck me: it's pretty middle of the road as far as stock goes. Brands range from the lower end of the scale to halfway, though the best known, fanciest, and highest quality products weren't particularly visible. Buyers in the know can judge a place fairly quick based on what they carry; the absence of some of the reputable, better known brands in clothes, shoes, jewelry and playful accessories was a bit of a disappointment. Sometimes it's fun to see the objet d'amor in person and hold it in your hands or wear it to be sure that flirty little skirt is halfway decent to leave the house in. Hey, it's a serious consideration when you're 6'0 and like to wear heels! Prices are about what I'd expect for a boutique -- on the higher side. If you're not willing to wait for the 2-3 day shipping from online sources, then by all means, stop in. Not everything here is of a quality I prefer, though I'm an absolute stickler for brands. Nonetheless, they have multiple price points and they get points for carrying Lilo (a great company). Selection is fairly limited; there are other shops, particularly one in Ann Arbor, with a wider range. Clothes are one of the raison d'etres for Noir, and they range from provocative to clubwear, raunchy to playful goth/alternative. Tripp NYC and Lip Service both showed up in my quick foray. Again, not really to my tastes but they have a pretty broad range without too much markup. Look out for the sales, which brings prices down into the stratosphere again. It can be a hoot to try on a few of the pieces. Lingerie leaves something to be desired for me, but I'm past the point in my life where I go for an overpriced latex g-string or a flimsy corselet; I want the real thing, steel boned, capable of lasting. Now, that said, for costuming and burlesque stuff, you can find a fair amount here that would tease and tantalize. I'm not sure that they'd hold up very well, however, to frequent use. Carol H. hits it on the head -- it is definitely not cheap, and the lower end products may lack for quality. So what's worth stopping in here for? Leather goods, I presume, which give the place its name. I didn't really take detailed stock of them, but Noir is named for the stuff and they seemed to know their craft when asked by other patrons. Noir also keeps heavy tabs on the alternative scene, from local burlesque shows to concerts and lectures/seminars on safe sex, alternate sexuality, and more. I give them credit for that. Royal Oak has gentrified from its feel in the 90s but they have held on, adapted with the times, and given near west suburbanites a place to giggle, peek, and feel sexy. read more

I used to come to Noir for the most random accessories. This place is definitely one of a kind... and kind of seems out of place in the lovely downtown Royal Oak area. In here you will find not only leather, but 6 inch heels, boots, fishnet bottoms and tops, lingerie, etc. The staff is super cool and tattooed up. There was one nice lady tht was clean shaven that helped me, she was pretty nice and I've since ran into her and a couple of the other ladies again in my travels. I seen two of them at a vintage shop in the Mad-Heights. We talked about design school and what a waste she thought IADT was.. I've come to this location a couple of times and have been really looking forward to a treasure trove if kinky goodies. Yes, they certainly are there- high-end marvels for my dream dungeon! Very much luxury items. I bought a toy for twenty bucks, though, just to scratch my itch, and, like a neophyte, didn't demand that they check the batteries before I bought it. To start things off, I was 15 when I first visited Noir and that's the last time i've been there. I had no previous knowledge about this store, so I walked in with my grandfather and 10 year old sister obliviously because there was no indication on the store front to restrict minors from entering. The front room was extremely cramped, kind of ho-hum with lots of poser jewelry and small, cheap, overpriced clothes. I was attracted to the store because of the large Baphomet in the window so honestly i didn't know what I was expecting. An employee, maybe about 19 with funny hair, walked past me and my little sister with nothing to say. We squeezed our way through and realized what kind of store this was, with lots of sex toys and bondage goods in cases and hung on the walls of the back room. I'm glad she didn't ask me what those glass things were. Keep in mind on the way through the little hall we passed by some employees and they too said nothing. I'm a fan of goth and Satanist sub-culture and the range of items was pretty vast, to my delight which is the only part I enjoyed. If you're under 18 and expecting this to be a bigger, better Hot Topic, stick to the front room. read more

The manager has a nasty attitude and gave me terrible customer service; she was very sarcastic, spoke to me with a smart mouth, and is unprofessional.
