Nomura preschool is truly a gem and our family feels very fortunate to have been a part of this great school and community. Our 3 kids have started at Nomura since they were 2 years old, in the youngest Chicky classroom (although now enrollment is open to 18month olds!). Ms. Rosi, Ms. Cassandra, Ms. Djamila, and Ms. Kim were instrumental in helping our toddlers learn important skills such as feeding themselves and potty training! We were updated daily both verbally and with photos, and the amazing communication made all the difference during these huge milestones. In the middle classrooms, we have over the years, had the true pleasure of having Ms. Keila, Ms. Diana, Ms. Linh, Ms. Nickie, and Mrs. Young as our teachers, who have helped our kids learn their letters and numbers and learn how to share and play with others. The balance of academic, play and social skills was perfect and our kids have thrived during these years! Even Ms. Chieko, who we have not had the pleasure of having as a classroom teacher yet, has also played a crucial role in our daily routine. She has jumped right in to help with the transition at drop off, showing the great teamwork and community of all the teachers. The pre-K year has been an extra special year in our experience, with real friendships forming between the kids and lasting bonds forming with the pre-K teachers, Ms. Keiko and Ms. Nao. They truly care about the success and well-being as kids go off to Kindergarten or TK and often keep in touch with graduates. They do a lot to make the last preschool years very special, with field trips and special activities, again nicely balanced with academics and social skills that have lasting effects in years to come. There are also many extracurricular activities available, including Gardening with Ms. Rosita-who has the most calm and caring nature, Music with Mrs. Green, who delights the kids with her whimsical classes filled with music, instruments and magic (literally magic tricks!). This is such a great community that even teachers like Mrs. Kathy, who previously retired has come back to substitute teach! We are so grateful for the amazing teachers who support our son every day. Ms. Diana is incredibly attentive and always keeps us informed about any changes we notice in our son, which we truly appreciate. Ms. Keila does a wonderful job encouraging his creativity and helping him express himself. Ms. Linh takes the time to connect with him through his love of drawing and the characters he's interested in, which makes learning so enjoyable for him. All three teachers are extremely personable, kind, and genuinely care about our child and all the children in the class. They are great communicators and create such a warm, nurturing environment. Updating my review as my daughter is now in T-K at Nomura. While she could have gone to public school this school year, we decided to keep her at Nomura because she continues to absolutely love it there. We have seen her grow so much in her confidence, social skills, and ability to write now. And we as her parents also feel so comfortable with the teachers and administration that we didn't want to uproot her quite yet. We feel like she will be well prepared for kindergarten next year and are still so blessed that she is a student there. Nomura preschool creates such a nurturing and fun learning environment for kids while instilling school readiness skills and age appropriate social emotional learning. The administration is incredibly organized and thoughtful. The teachers are all amazing-- at her time at Nomura, my daughter has had 8 teachers in 3 classrooms and they are all INCREDIBLE. We absolutely LOVE Nomura!! Our youngest started there 3 years old and had a wonderful experince with Ms. Nickie and Ms. Young - they provided enough structure to help the kids develop socially/emotionally while also allowing for plenty of time to play and be silly! We're in our second year at the school and couldn't be happier with Ms. Keiko and Ms. Nao. While they do a wonderful job teaching kids the basics (letters, numbers, etc) there are two things that I really love: they put a big emphasis on teaching the kids how to be responsible, and they care about having FUN. My son loves going to Nomura as he has been there since he turned 2 years old and is now 4 years old. He has grown so much, built his confidence, social skills, and now is learning how to write. He has had some amazing teachers in every class and absolutely loves them. He is now a Pelican (oldest class) with Ms Keiko and Ms Nao and he has excelled to writing his name, speaking more and building his confidence and social skills. His teachers are amazing they really care for the kid's growth both personally and academically and making it fun every day for him. The entire staff all excel at the school and really care for the kid's growth. As a parent I feel so secure leaving my son there as I know he is well cared for and learning new and exciting things. Nomura has been such a blessing for our family. Our daughter started when she turned two. It is truly a special place. The administrators and teachers are all invested in the kids. You can tell everyone working there is in it for the right reasons. Everyone is warm and welcoming. The facilities are clean and well-outfitted. The playgrounds are large and fun. They have so many engaging activities throughout each week like yoga, crafts, music, and sports. Our daughter is constantly singing songs she's learned at school. Annual events like the picnic, Halloween parade, Christmas concert, and others help to bring parents together and are well organized. Our daughter absolutely loves going to school. We were at Nomura during and after Covid restrictions. We had an overall positive experience with a few bumps. The positive is definitely the administration, the teachers, the curriculum and activities for kids, and the community. The teachers were creative, caring, inventive and attentive. We always has questions answered promptly by teachers and administration. My kid loved their teachers and their classmates, and was always having fun and creating. They was also exposed to the foundations of learning like letters, phonics, numbers and counting, and science in a way that has set them up for a great Kindergarden year. I'm not sure if these are things the school is still struggling with, but we experienced some teacher turnover and classroom change. In our first few months there our kid had over 6 different teachers. It seemed to calm down after that. We also had a less than positive experience with one teacher, but the school resolved that. Overall I am very glad my kid went to Nomura and I would recommend it. read more

We absolutely adore Nomura preschool and have referred all of our friends with kiddos to consider this very special, nurturing school. We just graduated this fall after being a Nomura family for 6 years and have had experiences with just about every teacher. We sent both our daughters all the way from chicky through kindergarten (a pop up classroom generously offered during Covid!) We were with the school before, during, and after covid and through it all watched as the teachers and staff seamlessly navigated challenging situations. Our daughters were always excited to skip off to school and see their beloved teachers and classmates and on mornings they were feeling more fragile and shy the staff was always ready with a hug and an activity to help ease them into the day. Matt and his staff were always communicative and transparent, we never felt out of the loop or confused. We also appreciated the daily photos and messages from the teachers. The hours are unmatched and they even offer extracurriculars like soccer, piano, and gymnastics that my girls absolutely loved. Some of our best family friends are from Nomura and we still keep in touch with many of the teachers even though we are no longer at the school. I could go on and on, I was so sad to leave this past September when my youngest moved onto kindergarten! read more

Wonderful preschool located in the Richmond Annex! My son loved it for all 3 years he was there. It's a small setting so you can really get to know the teachers, admin, kids and parents. Communication from the staff is great! Emails are sent out about important events well in advance and they use an app to communicate with parents directly (and share pics of the kids!). The campus is well maintained, clean and there are lots of outside play areas. The teachers are amazing and so kind. There is some weekly homework (a simple worksheet) that helps reinforce teachings which I really appreciated. My son started kindergarten and has already aced some of the assessments given because of what he learned at Nomura. It is an excellent place to start your little one's education! read more

The teachers sound lovely and very educated, funny with positive energy. The administration is 1 star, they take off weekends, holidays, summer, Christmas and on top of it, they want you to take a week of quarantine if you take your child somewhere outside state, by train or plane. Imagine you are just about to have baby #2, your toddler has been at the school for months. Now there are some beahvior issues they want to look into. They suggest an OT review. You do that. The toddler is simply having a bit of an emotional time. The school has ZERO interest in learning about the OT report and seeing what type of temporary accomodation can be done. Instead they simply tell the parents "Your child is no longer welcomed, the week your new baby arrives". Run, do not walk away from this place.... read more

We started our daughter at Nomura shortly after her 3rd birthday. She had been at an in home daycare since she was 3 months old. Nomura staff were all so welcoming and made her transition into a more structured environment smooth. I wasn't planning on writing a review, but after seeing another review from Cathy F. I had the moral obligation to write one, so other parents are aware of what may happen to them. What happened to her is exactly what happened to us. We enrolled our kid in October 15th and on Feb 6th we were told he was misbehaving. On Feb 23rd we were told his last day was the following Friday. Overall, 17 calendar days from first notice to expel. Communication from the administrator and/or director was non-existent. So parents considering enrolling at Nomura, beware they can and will get rid of you with almost no notice and then you'll have little to no time to find another place. For us (both parents working full time on-site) this situation was quite stressful, to put it nicely. They recommended that we sought evaluations for our kid's "special needs". They are "not experts in that" but they can say those two words to your face without a problem. We did that and today we got the report from Cameron school where he is not eligible for service. Quoting a specialist there "I'm not a fan of Nomura, they are very rigid and not accommodating". Our kid will start TK next year at a public school. Parents, please check the new qualifying enrollment ages for TK ! You may save yourselves one full year of pre$chool ! Their staff is (administrators words) "not qualified" to deal with "difficult kids", meaning kids that run and climb and do kids' things that to them are dangerous. They indeed are not qualified and I'd say calling this business a preschool is not accurate. If you have a quiet kid you may have more luck. If you are Asian then they may have more patience with your kid (see other reviews about this kind of discrimination, positive and negative). By the way, our kid got bitten by another kid in December but in that scenario the director rapidly came and talked to us to try to play down the situation. Maybe the biter was one of the kids they like? We truly regret enrolling our kid at Nomura. It's 100% our fault we didn't check the place at different hours of the day (if you do you'll see quite a few bored kids looking through the window with a lost mind), see other reviews about this fact. We ignored those reviews before enrolling and now we regret it. After the fact I realized there were kids that after more than a year still go in there crying every day. I didn't pay attention to that while our kid was there but I've had my time to reflect and think. In the end Nomura is a business and of course they can do as they please, but I repeat, if that can disrupt your whole family's schedule please do a thorough research at finding a better place. I love Nomura. They really have a great program that balances learning from all perspectives. Kids play, do experiments, garden, academics learning letters and numbers, and of course social skills. The teachers are so caring and loving that it made me feel reassured when I dropped off my child. The classes and campus is clean. Communication from the staff and administrators are so great. My two kids attended Nomura Preschool over the past three years. Both of them were happy to go to school everyday, and both learned and grew a lot not only academics but also social skills and more. Thanks to all the wonderful and professional Nomura teachers! Our family had to move to East Coast because of job change a few months ago. My little one often says that she wants to go back to her old school and requests to wear Nomura spirit T-shirt to her new preschool. Both kids are still talking a lot about Nomura. We had a wonderful experience at Nomura. My daughter loved her teachers from when she started in Chicky to when she graduated from Penguin. We found all of the staff to be caring, thoughtful and nurturing (you could tell they considered teaching as a career and not just a job). They truly wanted to make sure that my daughter was prepared when she left for kindergarten, which she was thanks to them! The curriculum is a nice balance of structure and play. The hours are great and the facilities offer a lot of open space for the kiddos to run around and be active. Childcare is expensive in the Bay Area, but we felt like Nomura offered a lot of extras (ex: yoga, Japanese, gymnastics, soccer, piano, field trips), while charging around the same as other preschools in the area. More than anything, we trusted the staff and administration, and we knew that our daughter was happy as she grew, learned and matured each and every year she was there. read more

Both of my kids started at Nomura when they were two years old (in Sept 2016, and August 2018) as Chickies and graduated (when it was time to go to preschool). (Our youngest is graduating this year.) All of the teachers, directors, and other staff are lovely, friendly and so patient. Our kids loved them. The school was transparent about their policies and vacations from the day we registered. Their calendar follows the WCCUSD calendar which is great when planning school holidays. With regards to learning: Free play in encouraged, since that is how kids learn. Starting at 3 years old, they start with letters and numbers, both writing and recognizing them. They also encourage practicing holding writing and drawing implements. (Something your Kindergarten teacher will be happy with.) In the pre-K classrooms, there is weekly homework for the kids. Our kids would constantly come home with art and other projects they've been working on. When my oldest was assessed for Kindergarten, he was able to identify all the letters, numbers, sounds and shapes. Nomura definitely prepares them for Kindergarten. In terms of social preparation for Kindergarten, their supervised free play helped my kids learn how to make friends and resolve conflicts without fighting and yelling. My oldest was also prepared to sit in front of a teacher and listen, which his Kindergarten expected. read more

If could give it more stars, I'd definitely do it. My two kids attend this preschool; the oldest just graduated from Penguin class. It has been a great experience and I highly recommend it. Both of my kids are happy to go there every day and one also asks me to pick him up late to spend more time there! On the educational side, I can attest they prepare kids really well to attend Kindergarten without neglecting other important values such as creativity, empathy, and other activities such as sports and music. Both of my kids love it, and you can tell they also love their teachers who take care of them as if they were family. Other friends also have their kids here and have similar experiences. Finally, I'd say all the other parents I've talked with have a similar opinion and never heard of a bad experience. My oldest son started at Nomura in 2018 and my youngest in 2020. We have been really happy with the care and education the teachers and staff have provided over the years. At one point in 2018, my older son was hospitalized for several days. We reached out to Nomura to give them a heads up that he would not be at school for a while. Their response was above and beyond what I expected: 1) The Director came and visited my son at the hospital 2) The Director sent me a really touching email & shared lots of pictures of my son from school, which put a big smile on our face to see him happy there and 3) They waived a month of tuition while he was not attending since he had to be hospitalized and then at home for a couple of weeks for a full recovery. We were completely surprised and grateful for their generosity. I also want to highlight how the school is operating now, especially in light of the COVID pandemic: - COVID Safety Precautions: Nomura is unique in that each class has a separate building or room, so it's easy for the classes to stay separated into their "pods" when they're inside the classroom. Likewise, they have separate sections for their outdoor playground. There is a protocol in place for check-in (temperature checks, etc.) and check-out and everyone wears a mask. - Communication: Prior to COVID, parents were able to come into the class to pick up their kids and chat with the teachers. Due to COVID, parents can no longer go into the classroom and while we can have a brief chat with the teachers during the pick up process, I do appreciate that the teachers have made themselves available for non-urgent questions on the ClassDojo platform. They have also used ClassDojo to share pictures so we get a better idea of how our kids' days went. I appreciate the extra attention to communication, especially during these times! - Curriculum/Skills Learned: My oldest son is 4 and currently in the Puffin class. I want to highlight how much he has grown since he started - from being able to write his ABCs, numbers 1-30, and some basic reading, I've been really impressed with how far along he's come. Also, each month the Puffin class focuses on a particular topic - for example this past month has been "Space" so it's been great to hear from him how he's learning about the planets and has so many inquisitive questions (i.e. Why is Mercury not the hottest planet if it's the closest to the Sun?) that I know he is picking up from school. - Extracurriculars: During COVID, they are still offering music classes that are taught virtually by Ms. Liz, which is a great bonus when my kids come home singing new songs. Prior to the pandemic, they offered a wide range of extracurriculars for those interested including soccer, gymnastics, ballet, etc. I'm looking forward to when they can offer those again. :) read more

Nomura Preschool stands for what they believe in, they care and nurture your child. We sent our son, at the time 2 years old, to Nomura Preschool. It was one of the hardest and best decisions we made as first time parents. We were very nervous, as any first-time parents would be, but the staff was amazing. They took our son in with open loving arms and helped us cope with having to leave him. Watching him grow over the next two years confirmed that we made the right choice enrolling him. The teachers, administration and director had been nothing but an amazing and supportive community to the families. The teachers give daily updates for the child's day (before Covid) and the administration talks to parents before transitioning any child anywhere (because there levels of classes the students transitions through). They always have the best interest of the child. We found that the school is very transparent; they told us everything we needed to know in the beginning. These are one of the many reasons why we chose Nomura Preschool for our son. Our daughter started here at 2 and she is a proud graduate of Nomura this month. The school has nothing but the best to offer and I believe it is one of the best in east bay. We even made few referrals to our friends and they love it as well. The administrator is always on his toes working for school, especially during COVID. Despite the COVID surge, we had a relatively safe Nomura community. COVID safety protocols were always updated in a timely manner. And this is one of the first thing I mention to my friends when I refer them to Nomura. All the teachers are trained and are very caring with the kids. I highly recommend Nomura. read more

I rarely write review, but in this case I have to. 1- Be aware of racism and favoritism in this day care. Director, Keiko is Asian and if your child is Asian it gets treated better and gets room to move in and move up fast. I also agree with another reviewer in this page that Keiko, director should be ashamed of her discriminating behaviors based on her personal preferences. 2- director of this school is extremely rude and bossy to teachers and parents. She is so crazy and micromanager that she doesn't let teachers to provide feedback to parents during teacher-parent conference time and she yaps herself (elsewhere it is teachers who meet with parents not director). 3-Kids only free play like animals and no structured learning is arranged and planned for kids 4-When kids are in the yard, they play without supervision and constantly get hurt, very dangerous 5-turn around rate is high and new teachers doesn't stick around from poor management 6-parents are frustrated with day care constant demand and random and frequent shut downs for any reason. Any random holiday that corporates are not off, they shutdown, so be ready to pay full monthly fee and have your kid at home frequently read more

I had my kid in this day care for about a year in 2020, 2021. Here is why I absolutely don't recommend this place. Please be aware: - I have removed my dear kid from this school because my kid was learning nothing from school for a year and was dangerously being isolated and treated differently. All they did was art, play with plastic toy and free play in yard 90% of the time. This is for 3+ years old. - There was no instructed led training like you see in Montessori schools. - All of my kid's classroom pictures spoke for themselves where kids only playing with plastic toys, train tracks at all time - If you stop by 9.30 or 10 am or 4 pm kids are so bored they are behind the windows like prisoners looking outside the window. That is how "interactive" their classrooms are. I felt so bad every time I saw that my heart breaks to see kids in that way only waiting eagerly for their parents to pick them up. - During Covid time when dropping off my kid, when I cross the blue line in front of the school door the director, came out very rudely shouting out at me to not cross the blue line. Talking like something so horrible happened and I harassed someone. Extremely unprofessional. - They have very loose precautionary practice during COVID. One day I arrive earlier and looked through the opening of the gate inside yard and saw kids from two classroom playing in mixed yard. Next Monday after this instance they notified everyone that there was a positive case. I wonder why!?. While they lied to us that kids are not mixed. Anyway I did not bring up to schools my observation of course from the fear of retaliation - their " music class" is a virtual play trough laptop and basically putting your kid in front of screen - turn around is high and within 1 year there were 4 teachers in and out of my kid's class - they scold kids and diminish their confidence. My kid was becoming very reserved in this school and that's absolutely not okay to promote. My kid's teacher told me herself that she physically separate kids and she would scold my kid and place aside because my kid was playful in multiple instances in circle time. Once I waited and watched my kid from window and saw that he was actually the most well behaved one who sat quietly the longest at circle time. -So do not expect tolerance and educated trainers in childhood behavior from this school. As a matter of the fact very bad place for growing kid - My kid is now at another school and his teacher who left Nomura also moved to the same school. She stated to me that the reason she also left Nomura was that they treated kids very discriminatory and different and separated as one example newer kids to do simpler things rather mix them up to be role model for each other. Also she couldn't tolerate seeing how little effort school made to teach kids anything meaningful other than art art and Of course LOTS of FREE PLAY with cheap toys. This teacher also told me kids were learning very minimum of what they were actually capable of learning due to lack of effort put by teachers and school - So I was happy to hear that the teacher's perspective who left this place was same as mine as this is a reassurance on what I was feeling wasn't an assumption by no means - Fast forward my kid's learning took lightening speed in new school in just few days. His confidence has boosted and I can't describe the difference it made just in few days. My kid is much much happier, confident, talkative, capable and disciplined - For reference a 2 years old can count to 20 already at home - Please be aware that I have seen this preschool reach out to Yelp to remove negative feedbacks. Our family is moving for a new job and to be closer to family- one of our biggest concerns is that we won't be able to find a school like Nomura. Our son started as a Chicky and is now a Rooster and I can't say enough about the love and kindness he (and we as parents) have felt. There is the perfect blend of activity, learning, music, language, art and creative free play which means my son has been exposed and is excited about it all! He comes home singing and talking about all the friends he has. I also appreciate that Mr Clark and teachers promote community through school events, picnics and parent nights. I am so surprised there hasn't been an updated review about Nomura! My oldest has been attending since he was a little under 2 years old and he is now 3.5. I can wholeheartedly state that this is such a loving and nurturing environment for the kids here. I am such a type A mom and therefore, ask lots of questions. The teachers and staff are always so helpful. My son comes back happy and eager to go back to school the next day. He brings home beautiful projects and art work also. It doesn't feel like a preschool or a daycare at all, but more of a family and just so welcoming. Nomura is such a gem to our family and I can't wait to send my youngest there next year. read more
