There were times when I felt ready to give up, times I didn't know what I was even learning only to finally understand it a week later. I really enjoyed having multiple teachers present information coming from different backgrounds and experiences. The multiple rotating teaching styles helped as well, especially since different students learn in different ways. As a USAF Veteran who had a bad experience with attending a school that claimed to be "Veteran friendly", I was thankful for the care Skill Distillery gave to its prior service students. It was also fun having Vets from all four branches in my class, providing comradery and an easy way to get to know one another through shared military experiences. Sprinkled throughout the program were several pair, group, and individual projects ranging in difficulty and time allotted to accomplish. These projects instilled the skills learned and helped me get a sense of how to work together on a team, a skill essential to today's tech industry workplaces. Although the school lacks the flashiness of some of the other local boot camps, in the end, it helped me (as an extrovert) remain focused on my studies without distraction. I also enjoyed the small class size allowing the teachers to spend more one on one time with each student. Again, Skill Distillery was super challenging but I am thankful for the skills learned, the relationships made, and the opportunities I now have going forward.

Driving through here on a…read morelast minute whim heading to Wyoming, we drove by Columbine to pay respects, ended up in the tiny parking lot out front and was stalked/ followed by their many armed security personnel (waste of taxpayer money). One security, being hostile, hopped in front of the moving vehicle, asking questions and wanting the DL, trying very hard to scare you instead of just simply directing you to the memorial site, which makes more sense. They did have a no trespass sign, but it was miss if you blink. The school was shabbier and smaller than what was seen in pictures, but I wouldn't want to attend anyway due to the tense and dark atmosphere residing there. The people are very dark, brooding and mean. Be careful going over there. You will be looked at as a felon. The security, that's planted at the school, automatically assumes that you are coming to start trouble because they want to make sure they're doing their job this time. Now, I'll take the blame for being a gawker, but I really was trying to pay respects passing thru on my way to something else. Since it was a major news story, I'm not sure what they expect.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum is an excellent basis for in-depth education and exploration, but the true strength of Mackintosh is the amazing teaching faculty and staff. All of the teachers seem to love their jobs and their students and with the low student/teacher ratios, the teachers truly know the kids and how to elicit their best thinking and work. Like all learners, gifted students have strengths and weaknesses, and the teachers are able to offer broad enrichment to support a student's strengths as well as support and scaffolding for a student's challenge areas. They are able to support a learner who may be three years ahead in math, but who finds writing a struggle. The teachers are willing to differentiate instruction and assignments and meet students where they are and gently push them to grow and believe in their abilities. Some more things that I love about the school: amazing grade-level theatrical performances, multi-day nature-based field trips for the older grades, outside lunch as weather allows, and a well-rounded curriculum that includes PE every day, plus either performing or visual arts every day and a period every day that is split between Spanish some days and design others. I wish more kids could experience a Mackintosh education. I saw some comments about bullying. I am not personally aware of any bullying at the school, and I haven't had any parents share any bullying experiences with me. Also, I haven't experienced any "cliques" among the parents. Everyone seems very nice and genuine. If you have a gifted learner who would benefit from a warm, enriching, education, we strongly recommend that you consider Mackintosh Academy.

Our oldest initially started kinder at our assigned public elementary (CHVE) and after seeing the amazing job that All Souls was doing with our kids in ELC, we ended up making the decision to move her to All Souls mid way through the year in Kindergarten. It was the best decision we have made for our family. The education they are receiving as well as the dedication to the arts makes this school a truly special place. At the end of the day, I think the thing we are most happy with is the fact that our kids are going to spend the next few years surrounded by teachers, students and families that are loving and supportive.
