I went to North Star today 5/19 at around 2:40 pm because I wanted some fresh Chicharron and I heard that they sell that. This place is next to PT Hawaii and there was plenty of parking. I went in and stood in line. There were a few people ahead of me so it wasn't too busy. There were 2 women working- one was doing the food and the other was the cashier. As I was standing in line I noticed there were flies in the hot food- however, the chicharron was in its own case that was enclosed and I made sure no flies were in there. When it was my turn the woman who was doing the food didn't even want to acknowledge me. I had to tell the cashier that I wanted one lb of chicharron, then she literally told the food lady right next to her what I wanted. I paid almost $20.00 for one lb of chicharron but the worst part is that food woman didn't even cut it up for me! I literally came home with a slab that I have to cut up myself, all good though. I had to inspect the pork throughly anyways to make sure there were no fly eggs. I absolutely don't recommend this place. Bad service and flies in the hot food area. read more

Best chicharrons! My absolute fave! Ladies are so friendly too! Lots of various vegetables and authentic Filipino foods.

I wish I took a picture but the food went fast lol! Mini 2 choice for $12.75 feeds 2 adults! Adobe is very soft and pinacbet just came out and it was perfect for me (I love betterment too). Other things worth trying is the biko (another favorite) and the empananda with vinegar sauce! Just remember to turn right when you enter, you cannot cut in line!!! read more

If you're looking for authentic home cooked Filipino food, North Star is the place to go. We used to frequent their Kalihi location on School Street, however, after 40+ years in business, the "uncles and aunties" finally decided to retire this past October so only the Waipahu location is still in business. One of their popular items is the chiicharon, a crunchy skin on the outside and that tender juicy pork on the inside. Yummy! For those that don't know, it is basically a Filipino version of Chinese roast pork. They also have other favorites including pancit, pork adobo, pork quisantes and pinakbet to name a few. Options include a mini or regular plate lunch or by the container (small, medium or large poke-sized plastic containers). This Waipahu location appeared to be bigger than their old Kalihi location. It is also a Filipino grocery store. Tip, if you are planning on ordering sausage by the case, it's best to pre-order. Northstar is located in the Waipahu Professional Center in the rear building, just diamond head (east) of Servco Toyota on Farrington Highway. I would give them 0 stars if I could. They are super rude if you are not Filipino!!! I'm Filipino (Ilocano to be exact), and I sent my husband there since he was going to an okazuya down the road. He was waiting in line, and the workers there started to help a guy speaking Filipino behind him in line rather than my husband who is Japanese and quite frankly doesn't look like he belongs in that store TBH. I gave them a call to complain because just because the customer isn't Filipino, doesn't mean they can't be served in the store. read more

I've known about this place for years. Partly because I had a mom who would always drive here to buy some Filipino goods. And the one main thing I've always known this place to have was longanisas & chicharon. I grew up eating these and continue to til this day. This however was the first time I actually came here on my own to make a purchase. $11 for a bag of longanisa, not bad. It will definitely last me a couple of weeks for just my husband and I. Cooked some up this morning and mmm mm was it good. I once bought from Times and the quality was bad. Wayyy to fatty. But I like North Stars longanisa. Definitely will buy and stock them in my house. Just FYI, the longanisas are sold frozen. Besides all the other dried canned goods they sell here. They also have a variety of cooked foods. You order by how many choices you choose from. No customer service, just get in, ask questions, pay, and get on your way. 2 stalls in front of the store, 1 of them is for handicap. Lots of snacks imported from the Philippines. read more

My grandma and I went there. I haven't been there in YEARS. She got her usual 5 bags of longanisa that's $11 per bag, apparently the lady gave her a discount if she bought more (Well I think she did). She also got there balintawak bread, but my Grandma was looking for some purple bread probably Ube but did not have it available, which she was upset about. We also got there orange empanadas, it was good but SUPER OILY. The vinegar longanisa was delicious, the size is perfect but I wish there was more in the bag. Went to get deep fried pig ears since my husband was craving it. They were in the ziplock bags but not filled. It was about 3/4 of the bag was filled. We frequently go to the hair salon around the corner so I come in here for the AWESOME chicharon! I usually have to buy each of my kids a $5 bag because they fight over the bag. It's really good stuff, perfectly seasoned and perfectly crunchy and fresh. You'll find a lot of filipino food products here and there's a little deli where they have ready-made dishes that you can order as a plate lunch. Their ginataan is good and always nice and warm. It's a quaint little shop. Pretty clean, but I gotta say, the people who run the place don't have much personality. I have yet to see them smile at all. They take your money, cash you out, give a weak "Thank You" and that's it. Oh well, guess we can't have it all. I'll keep coming here for the chicharon and ginataan anyway. I can leave my polite formalities at the door and not feel bad about it. LOL read more

Empanadas are very satisfying. Food wise is great. But customer service SUCKS. People that sales things are rude even when calling for business hours. Also, just because someone is FAT. It surely doesn't describe their dame ethnicity. So don't go judging people's appearance. Because I sure know what type of people you all look like here. Finally a North Star close to home. We usually frequent the one that was in Chinatown(by maunakea Market) but that closed down or the one on school st. All locations dont dissapoint. Like one yelper mention though make sure you pay attention to how they ring you up cuz other customer's pile on all their goods on the register area & ask for receipt or else they'll over charge you lol or give you the wrong food item make sure you check that also. The only place I go to to get my fix of traditional Filipino empanadas. There empanadas are made ilocos style. Unlike other spots that typically has the cabbage, sweet sausage mix. They use traditional mongo beans, shredded papaya, extra vinegar longanesa and a quale egg. Here all that.... Making you hungry huh. Here the price tho. It's 2.99 each and comes with a small portion of home made spicy vinegar sauce that goes well with it. read more
