I've been boating on this lake for 13 years, and yes--I can pronounce its full name, one of the…read morelongest place names in the world: Chargoggagoggmanchauggagaugchaubunagungamaugg. It's quite a mouthful! Purportedly the largest natural lake in Massachusetts, it's only about three miles long and one mile wide, which perhaps says more about Massachusetts lakes than it does this one. Still, it's a terrific local destination. The lake has a couple of marinas, three waterfront restaurants accessible by boat, a town beach with restrooms and a snack bar, and the popular Indian Ranch entertainment venue, which also includes an RV campground and the newer and quite good Samuel Slater's Restaurant. The lake offers something for almost everyone: fishing, swimming, boating, tubing, water skiing (there's even a water ski club), kayaking, and enough open water for all of those activities to coexist somewhat comfortably. Weekdays are wonderfully peaceful, making it easy to find a quiet cove or enjoy a leisurely cruise. Summer weekends, however, are another story. When the weather is hot, the lake becomes a very busy place. There are at least three eagle nests on the lake and one gas station. Unfortunately the gas station is currently closed. Dock space is in high demand, with waiting lists at the marinas. Development around the shoreline has steadily increased over the years. While a few natural stretches remain, nearly every buildable lot has been developed, and many of the original seasonal cottages have been replaced by sprawling year-round waterfront homes. I'm very fortunate to have this lake just a few minutes from home--and even more fortunate that I can usually enjoy it during the week, when the crowds are at work.

This State Park is a great place to swim during the summer as well as spend time barbecuing with friends. Whenever we go we make it a point to show up early in the morning, set up shop, and do nothing for the rest of the day. They have a ton of different picnic areas and a centralized beach area with bathrooms and a food trailer. They also have space to play soccer and a few different horseshoe pits. The park also has some walking trails that provide a great space to connect with nature. A few things do need to be said about the park. The first is that you should plan to show up early on busy days such as holidays because at times there can be limited parking. The other interesting fact is that you should plan to have little to no cell service while at the park. This is great because it ensures that you won't be bothered, but good luck checking in.

A guy let us park in his yard for $10. It was pretty filled up, but, it was still comfortable. Great sandcastle sand, clean bathrooms, and GORGEOUS scenery. We stayed until the lifeguards left at 6. With that comes loud and fast aquatic toys. The Lake Association (or MASS DEP) regulate the flow pattern of water craft to a counter-clockwise direction, only. Arm powered water craft (i.e. canoes, kayaks, SUPs) have some leeway to go clockwise, BUT you have to stay close to the shore, especially if going against the grain. All in all, this is a nice lake to paddle, power boat, and fish. I'd recommend off season such as spring and fall if you want a more tranquil experience.

I used to go to camp at Holy Cross, which is on this Upper reservoir. I have camped and hiked all over this place, and its a great place to "forest surf", lose your self, meditate, get back to nature. The public resources are hit/miss, anyone who camps knows to pitch in to help out, instead of complain about your fellow man's inconsideration. Little hint, you can get to the Lower Highland Reservoir, there is even a boat drop in spot...just ask the ranger how to find it!!!!!

Have been coming here forty years plus. It is pristine. Love being here almost every year. It's fun for swimming in. The water is clear. Fishing is okay but not great. My friend and I went yesterday and it cost $25 for the two of us, including parking. They actually do come around and check to make sure everyone paid. Small parking lot but if it is full, you can park on the next street. If you're looking at the lake, park on the street to the right of it. There is a floating dock to swim/walk out to. The water blocked off for swimming is not that deep. I think the deepest is probably 5 feet. They do have lifeguards on duty and a little snack shack. Water is clean for a lake and typically warm. There is a playground and a couple picnic tables. Not much shade. Kids are allowed to wear lifejackets, but that is all I recall seeing for flotation devices. They do have kayaks and I think paddle boots you can rent. Opens at 10 AM.

You will not be able to find it unless you get a local as the tour guide. The best way to go down to diesel lake, is to go down to the lake streets all the way to the end of the lake street. Then turn right go into the fourth Street. In the corner of Lake Street and fourth Street you will see the entrance of the lake. It's a good trail to just walk around the lake or do some jogging in the morning if you are in the neighborhood.
