My kids and I are so grateful for this place, the people we find there and the inspiration and activism that the church spurs.

Later, after becoming a parent, I was even more set against going to church because I didn't want to tell my children what to believe - I want them to think for themselves and decide on their own what they believe. After a while, however, I realized that by not exposing them to any religion at all, I was doing just what I was trying to avoid - I was telling them to not believe anything. After a few years of searching, I stumbled across Live Oak Unitarian Universalist Church. I stalked them on Facebook, and scoured every page of their website before ever considering attending. Clearly, a more liberal religion, welcoming to literally everyone, with social justice as a major part of what they believe - it seemed too good to be true. But finally, after months of prodding from my husband, I conceded to visit. Once. Within minutes of the service starting, I was in tears. All it took was hearing the affirmation, recited at every service, to know we'd found something really special. "Love is the spirit of this church and service its law. This is our great covenant: To dwell together in peace, to seek the truth in love, and to help one another." After the service, we found ourselves in the fellowship hall enjoying coffee with members - we were approached by several members, and made to feel so incredibly welcome. As we left, my husband couldn't believe his ears when I said, "I can't wait for next Sunday. " The service, and every service that has followed, has had me crying happy tears at at least one point or another. We've made so many friends, and love the community we've become a part of. But mostly, I am so indescribably grateful for the gift that Live Oak is for our kids. RE (religious education) is just that - religious education, not indoctrination. Kids are encouraged to think for themselves and to ask questions. In middle school, they learn about major religions, so that by high school, they are able to make their own faith statement about what they as individuals believe. Exactly what we want for our kids. If you're looking for an open minded, completely welcoming, "I *get* to go to church" instead of "I *have* to go to church" church home - come visit Live Oak UU. :) ******* Edited to reply to Brandon's critique: We are not fighting with anyone. I was surprised Christians would go so far out of their way to complain about things they can simply choose not to participate in. Yes, seating is assigned because the main area is small and often full. While it isn't my preference, it's never been an issue. The church does a great job coordinating parking, greeting people, opening doors, and helping everyone find their seats. The kids' area requires security stickers for entry, which I really appreciate. They'll stop anyone without one, and I love that focus on safety. Most importantly, the messages always hits home. We come to hear the Word, and VCC consistently delivers. Keep up the great work!

However I didn't really surrender my heart to God until I reached the age of 19 which was about 3 years ago now. I shutter to think about where my life would be if God hadn't sent Pastor Terry WAKEFIELD and his wife Jody to start a church here in Austin, Texas that I can be a part of today. I'm very grateful for this ministry and to be saved and in my right mind with a Pastor who has a passion to serve God, lead and direct this church to carry out Jesus Christ's commission to go out into all the world and preach the Gospel to all creation. A wonderful Stephen Minister, Barbara, found me early-on and introduced me to numerous members and and the two pastors of the church. She took me to her Sunday School class, and sat next to me in Church. She informed me of some of the basics of the church, explained some of the history behind the decor in the church, and much more. The church is very large - in size and congregation. There are two ministers - Val and Rosie - who are both very vibrant people. Why this church may not be for me: The congregation is primarily made up of 50+ and young families. There really is not a young professionals population. And, since connecting with others in my same life-stage is important to me, I probably won't end up here permanently. If, however, you are a parent to grade-school aged kids, or 50+ married/divorced and looking to meet similar people, this might be the place for you. It might also be for you if you're interested in local ministries, global ministries, children's ministries, a great choir (or so I hear, they were off for the summer), or a church with plenty of opportunities to get involved and meet others. I do plan to go back for blessing of the pets, this Wednesday at 6:30 P.M.

I don't drive, but thankfully I live close and have a list of folks who I can call for rides. Yes we do have a wonderful choir. Singing everyday is good for you. Immediately after I joined the choir, I felt like part of the group. I enjoy that Covenant is a hands on church. We do work in the community. Our Pastor Val is wonderful. Her sermons are very relevant to our lives. I look forward to going to church every week. Th website has pod casts if you're interested.
